Evaluating Healthcare Workers’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices Regarding Language Access Services In The Clinical Setting, Rachel Archibald
Evaluating Healthcare Workers’ Knowledge, Attitudes, And Practices Regarding Language Access Services In The Clinical Setting, Rachel Archibald
DNP Projects
Background: Barriers to accessing and understanding healthcare can place patients with low English proficiency at an increased risk of poor health outcomes. Language-based inequities in healthcare exist due to lack of interpretation and translation services available, lack of healthcare workers’ knowledge of resources, and/or perceptions that these services require too much time or effort. Failing to address barriers affecting this population leaves them vulnerable in the healthcare setting.
Purpose: The purpose of this DNP project was to educate nurses, providers, and staff on an inpatient unit at a rural hospital of the language interpretation resources available, best practices for implementation, …

Practicing Critical Global Citizenship In An Academic Library: Experiences Of Immigrant-Origin Librarians, Balladolid Lopez, Boutsaba Janetvilay
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
The number of immigrant-origin students in U.S. higher education, those born abroad and those born in the U.S. with immigrant parents, has and will continue to increase. How can academic librarians engage with these students and their communities? In this article, We will provide a brief background on the increase of immigrant-origin students in higher education, our experiences as two immigrant-origin librarians, and our efforts to support global citizenship. We will also discuss how our skills as technical services librarians were particularly useful in this work. In two mini case studies, we will discuss our sustained efforts to support two …
Negotiating Quotidian Justice In The Science Classroom, Christopher Irwin, Joshua Ellis
Negotiating Quotidian Justice In The Science Classroom, Christopher Irwin, Joshua Ellis
Faculty Publications
In this conceptual paper, we explore how science teachers might enact social justice through their everyday science instruction. Drawing on empirical literature and our own K-12 teaching experience, we develop a heuristic for mapping classroom discourses to engage in action and reflection to change both the world of the classroom community, and the world beyond the school. We suggest how this heuristic can be used for justice-oriented science teaching independently of (or as a supplement to) any existing frameworks for science teaching to promote social justice. Our proposed model for social justice through disciplinary science teaching frames justice not as …
Bringing Large Language Models To Ophthalmology: Domain-Specific Ontologies And Evidence Attribution, Aidan Gilson
Bringing Large Language Models To Ophthalmology: Domain-Specific Ontologies And Evidence Attribution, Aidan Gilson
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Background: In the landscape of medical innovation, Large Language Models (LLMs) represent a groundbreaking advancement, holding substantial promise for reshaping healthcare practices. These models demonstrate remarkable proficiency in assimilating and processing extensive medical literature, facilitating rapid information retrieval. Nevertheless, when applied to the specialized domain of ophthalmology, LLMs encounter significant hurdles owing to the intricacies inherent in this field. Ophthalmology, characterized by the intricate interplay of ocular anatomy, diverse disease manifestations, and nuanced diagnostic subtleties, poses considerable challenges for these generalized models. Compounding these challenges is the inherent limitation of the ophthalmological corpus itself, which remains notably narrower compared to …
Designing Dreams, Not Divides: Speculative Toolkit For Assessing Community Engagement Strategies – South Oak Cliff Renaissance Park In Dallas, Texas, Heena Shrestha
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
Community engagement in park design is critical in landscape architecture as it concerns the design in underserved communities where systemic inequities limit access to high-quality public spaces. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a toolkit to help landscape architects measure how successful their community engagement practices are in their design process. This toolkit addresses a critical gap in landscape architecture practice, where existing case studies often focus on environmental or social outcomes but need more methods for evaluating community engagement. By providing a structured approach, this toolkit enables landscape architects to measure, demonstrate, and validate their community engagement …
Processing Visual Form Information During L1 And L2 Lexical Access, Xinwen Zhang
Processing Visual Form Information During L1 And L2 Lexical Access, Xinwen Zhang
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study investigates visual word recognition in the first language (L1) and second language (L2). Several studies in this area have reported L1/L2 processing differences at the lexical form level; however, the nature of these differences remains a matter of theoretical debate. The present study examines the extent to which these differences might relate to disparities in orthographic processing in the L1 and L2. Specifically, it uses masked identity priming to investigate whether skilled L2 readers differ from skilled L1 readers in terms of the efficiency with which they access abstract lexical representations during the early stages of visual word …
Language Models For Rare Disease Information Extraction: Empirical Insights And Model Comparisons, Shashank Gupta
Language Models For Rare Disease Information Extraction: Empirical Insights And Model Comparisons, Shashank Gupta
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
End-to-end relation extraction (E2ERE) is a crucial task in natural language processing (NLP) that involves identifying and classifying semantic relationships between entities in text. This thesis compares three paradigms for end-to-end relation extraction (E2ERE) in biomedicine, focusing on rare diseases with discontinuous and nested entities. We evaluate Named Entity Recognition (NER) to Relation Extraction (RE) pipelines, sequence-to-sequence models, and generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models using the RareDis information extraction dataset. Our findings indicate that pipeline models are the most effective, followed closely by sequence-to-sequence models. GPT models, despite having eight times as many parameters, perform worse than sequence-to-sequence models and …
The Nature Of Albanian Nasal-Stop Sequences: Phonetic, Phonological, Sociolinguistic & Historical Behavior, Patrick A. Gehringer
The Nature Of Albanian Nasal-Stop Sequences: Phonetic, Phonological, Sociolinguistic & Historical Behavior, Patrick A. Gehringer
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
The Albanian language is relatively unique among the Indo-European languages with its word initial nasal-stop sequences. Despite broad characterizations, the phonetic, phonological, and sociolinguistic properties of these sequences have not been analyzed with the same rigor as languages with similar sequences. I employ phonetic, perceptual dialectological and historical methods to examine not only how these clusters are employed by speakers in today’s Albanian linguistic landscape, but also to the historical mechanisms and timing of the development of these clusters and their variants within Albanian. With a combined spectral and aerodynamic analysis, I have identified that these clusters are phonemically composed …
A Computer-Assisted Approach To Lexical Borrowing In Northeast Caucasian Languages, Bonnie Eleanor Wren-Hardin
A Computer-Assisted Approach To Lexical Borrowing In Northeast Caucasian Languages, Bonnie Eleanor Wren-Hardin
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
The disambiguation of loanwords and cognates can be a challenge, especially in areas where there has been intense language contact over an extended period of time, when the contact is between genetically related languages, and when the number of languages involved is large Over the past several decades, more and more computational approaches to automatic cognate and borrowing detection have been created in an attempt to ease the load of examining hundreds to thousands of individual lexemes, as well as determine language family relationships with allegedly greater accuracy. While these methods are not perfect and cannot replace the knowledge or …
Beyond The Hands: Exploring Intersectional Identities Of Black American Sign Language Users, Tatum Turner
Beyond The Hands: Exploring Intersectional Identities Of Black American Sign Language Users, Tatum Turner
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
There is a significant gap in research related to the impact of intersectionality on linguistic identity performance among individuals negotiating multiple marginalized identities. This gap is especially significant among deaf Black and African American individuals who use the American Sign Language (ASL) variety deemed Black American Sign Language (BASL) (Hairston & Smith, 1983). This research aims to identify and discuss the use of the eight distinguishing features of BASL (McCaskill et al. 2011) as indexes of intersectional identities.
My data consists of videos sourced from YouTube, each chosen according to the following criteria: must have at least one self-identifying Black …

The Movie Is On!: Pragmatics Of The Video Joker In Who Killed Captain Alex?, Hunter Hulett
Theses and Dissertations--Linguistics
The film Who Killed Captain Alex? (WKCA) is a Ugandan film that provides an opportunity to examine the use of pragmatic and specifically deictic features to study the manipulation of borders between the film and reality. A commentator called the Video Joker (VJ) is the film’s deictic center, constantly destabilizing deictic relations and orienting the internal and external pragmatics of the film around themself. As the film’s ultimate pragmatic force, they occupy a position blurring diegesis and non-diegesis due to originating as real-time film commentators before being edited into the text. In this unique position, they shift the deixis’s organization …

Technology changed our world and shapes our reality in forms that widely differ from the traditional ones. Discourse and persuasion are not an exception. This study analyzes the tweets and oral discourses of eight politicians and social leaders during three of the most important days in the independence struggle between Catalonia and Spain to argue that the way people in power try to persuade their voters is changing, especially in new social networks such as Twitter.
The main object of study are the argumentative and persuasion processes that take place both in Twitter and oral discourses from the same politicians …
"Many Fabulous Stories And Idle Tales": The Intersection Of Elizabethan Political Gambits And Indigenous Erasure In The Early American Republic, Daniel Ryan Lewis
"Many Fabulous Stories And Idle Tales": The Intersection Of Elizabethan Political Gambits And Indigenous Erasure In The Early American Republic, Daniel Ryan Lewis
Theses and Dissertations--History
Welsh Indian Theory, originating in Elizabethan England, stated that a group of Welsh explorers settled in the Americas in the late 12th century and intermarried with the Indigenous tribes, thereby explaining “advanced cultures” ranging from the Mississippians to the Aztec Empire. This act of erasure became rooted in Kentucky and the surrounding area in the 18th and 19th centuries; a series of prominent individuals from Kentucky in turn contributed to a growing body of false historical narratives that denied Indigenous Americans their cultural identities and connection their ancestral lands in the United States. With a 460-year trail …
Relationality In Rousseau's Philosophy Of Education, Thayne Cameron
Relationality In Rousseau's Philosophy Of Education, Thayne Cameron
Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy
Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s assertion of Emile that “Our true study is that of the human condition” serves as the foundation for this dissertation, which examines the significance of certain kinds of basic experiential relationships in Rousseau’s philosophy of education. By analyzing the relationships between the self and objects, the self and others, and the educator and the learner, this work elucidates how these interactions underpin Rousseau’s pedagogical views and their implications for fostering personal and social virtue.
The dissertation explores the self-object relationship through affectivity, embodiment, and purposeful activity, demonstrating how direct engagement with objects shapes perceptions and behaviors. It then …

The Critical Need For Early Language Access For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Kinya D. Embry-Wright
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are referred to as the experts of communication (ASHA, n.d.) utilizing their specialized training, extensive education, and clinical expertise to work with individuals across the lifespan with a variety of different speech and language delays, disorders, and deficits. However, when working with deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) children, there is often precedent given to speech and listening (M. L. Hall et al., 2019). For example, ASHA only recently updated their DHH portal to include American Sign Language (ASL), though they still list it on some webpages as an Augmentative …

Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
Based on ethnographic work with Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee in Sonagachi, the iconic red-light district in Kolkata, Prophylactic Rights examines the emergence of labour rights at the intersection of HIV/AIDS and anti-trafficking. The primary disciplinary contribution of this book lies in bridging medical and legal anthropology through a corporeal understanding of sex work rights. It addresses the following questions: How does the labour rights narrative emerge through everyday negotiations with an epidemic and the law and what congeries of history, public health policies, legal regimes, and techniques of subjection and subversion impede and impel the labour movement? The book will …

Asking Gpt For The Ordinary Meaning Of Statutory Terms, Christoph Engel, Richard H. Mcadams
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
We report on our test of the Large Language Model (LLM) ChatGPT (GPT) as a tool for generating evidence of the ordinary meaning of statutory terms. We explain why the most useful evidence for interpretation involves a distribution of replies rather than only what GPT regards as the single “best” reply. That motivates our decision to use Chat 3.5 Turbo instead of Chat 4 and to run each prompt we use 100 times. Asking GPT whether the statutory term “vehicle” includes a list of candidate objects (e.g., bus, bicycle, skateboard) allows us to test it against a benchmark, the results …

Reliability Analysis Of The Basc-3 Srp-A Content Scales With American Indian/Alaska Native Adolescents, Ryan Johnson
Reliability Analysis Of The Basc-3 Srp-A Content Scales With American Indian/Alaska Native Adolescents, Ryan Johnson
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Historical trauma and context are necessary to comprehend and properly assess present-day issues faced by American Indian/Alaska Native communities. Historically, psychology research has not included minoritized and marginalized populations. A literature review pinpointed early assessment and intervention as critical for adolescents Although psychologists are increasingly aware of the importance of utilizing culturally-informed constructs, there is a lag in the update of assessment instruments. The BASC-3 is complex multidimensional assessment tool with potential to identify early-life issues for targeted intervention. Research on the reliability and validity of the BASC-3 is limited and sparse (Yetter & Foutch, 2017; Higa 2022), noting particular …

Towards Robust And Accurate Text-To-Code Generation, Saleh Almohaimeed
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Databases play a vital role in today's digital landscape, enabling effective data storage, management, and retrieval for businesses and other organizations. However, interacting with databases often requires knowledge of query (e.g., SQL) and analysis, which can be a barrier for many users. In natural language processing, the text-to-code task, which converts natural language text into query and analysis code, bridges this gap by allowing users to access and manipulate data using everyday language. This dissertation investigates different challenges in text-to-code (including text-to-SQL as a subtask), with a focus on four primary contributions to the field. As a solution to the …
The Impact Of Bilingualism On Visual Semantic Processing, Ancuta Margondai
The Impact Of Bilingualism On Visual Semantic Processing, Ancuta Margondai
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Bilingualism has been shown to influence a variety of cognitive aspects, including attentional control, behavioral regulation, and the adaptation to fluctuating linguistic demands. Nevertheless, the influence of bilingualism on visual semantic processing remains ambiguous, characterized by inconsistent previous findings.. The present study aims to investigate the bilingual switch cost effect, characterized by slower response times and increased inaccuracy for bilinguals, in the context of visual semantic processing.
The study is grounded in three theoretical models: the Bilingual Interactive Activation (BIA) model, the Adaptive Control Hypothesis, and the Visual World Paradigm Theory. These models hypothesize that bilinguals would demonstrate enhanced visual …

Beyond Discrimination: Market Humiliation And Private Law, Hila Keren
Beyond Discrimination: Market Humiliation And Private Law, Hila Keren
University of Colorado Law Review
Market humiliation is a corrosive relational process to which the law repeatedly fails to respond due to the law’s heavy reliance on the discrimination paradigm. In this process, providers of market resources, from housing and work to goods and services, use their powers to reject or mistreat other market users due to their identities. They thus cause users severe harm and deprive them of dignified participation in the marketplace. The problem has recently reached a peak. The discussion in 303 Creative v. Elenis indicates that the Supreme Court might legitimize market humiliation by granting private providers broad free speech exemptions …
Social Identity Matters: Lived Experiences Of Latina Teachers In Predominantly White Staff Schools, Oksana Rzhiskiy
Social Identity Matters: Lived Experiences Of Latina Teachers In Predominantly White Staff Schools, Oksana Rzhiskiy
Educational and Organizational Learning and Leadership Dissertations
The demographic makeup of student populations is undergoing profound shifts, with Latina/o students constituting a significant percentage. However, the representation of Latina/o educators within school systems remains disproportionately low. This incongruity between student demographics and educator representation may pose multifaceted challenges. To address this disparity, the present study delves into the lived experiences of Latina educators, illuminating the nuanced interplay of their social identities within educational contexts, particularly in relation to their interactions with White staff colleagues. Employing a phenomenological approach and supported by social identity theory and transformational leadership theory, this research endeavors to uncover the salient factors shaping …
