Dany Laferrière’s chronicles which make up Les années 80 dans ma vieille Ford (2005), are presented in the form of snapshots around situations and personalities that marked him in Haiti, and in North America where he took refuge in June 1976 (Montreal followed by stays in New York and Miami). He talks about colleagues from Le Petit Samedi Soir or intellectuals he portrayed in New York for Haïti-Observateur, with whom he crossed swords on more than one occasion. Throughout his work and up to the Petit traité du racisme en Amérique (2023), he participates in the genre of intellectual autobiography …

L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa
L’Autobiographie Intellectuelle De V. Y. Mudimbe Et Les Enjeux De La Différence, Justin Bisanswa
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Based on Les corps glorieux des mots et des êtres. Esquisse d’un jardin africain à la bénédictine, this text would like to analyze, at the confluence of sociology and rhetoric, the modalities (with their variations and their extensions) by which V. Y. Mudimbe broadens intellectual autobiography to other modes of writing and functions as a dialogic space between poetry and prose, experience and fantasy, reality and imagination. Retracing his pathway, Mudimbe makes his text a journey within oneself, a quest for the “absolute elsewhere” or a quest for the total Self. A feeling of lack emerges which explains this …
In this study of autobiography by French-speaking writers, we propose to construct a syntax for the genre, after recalling the great difficulty of tackling such a vast subject for so long. From then on, any study of autobiography implies confronting it with other related forms, such as essays, memoirs, autofiction, testimonies or diaries, all characterised by the assumed subjectivity of the “I” narrator, who recounts a life journey as well as a personal reflection on world events. The general idea defended here is that the grammar of intellectual autobiography presents itself as a narrative posture that needs to be thought …

V.Y. Mudimbe Et La Recherche D’Une Parole Pour-Soi : L’Essai Philosophique Aux Prises Avec L’Autobiographie : Vivre Et Écrire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. The basic hypothesis is that this practice is to be understood from an important moment in his intellectual development, namely May 68 and what has been called “La pensée 68” within which two antagonistic tendencies oppose each …

Human factors are crucial in causing traffic crashes and researchers try to identify and understand these factors to explore patterns of risky driving behavior and its consequences. It is clear that human factors play a crucial role in the causation of traffic accidents, and researchers are trying to identify and understand these factors. That is why it is important to explore the patterns that identify drivers prone to risky driving behavior and the possible negative consequences of that behavior At this aim, an experiment was conducted using the VERA dynamic driving simulator at the Road Safety Laboratory of the University …

Revolutionizing The Textile And Clothing Industry: Pioneering Sustainability And Resilience In A Post-Covid Era, Man Hin, Eve Chan, Jenny Cheung, Dawson Wai Shun Suen, Chi Wing, Alex Tsang
Department of Design and Architecture
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, posing significant challenges to the textile and clothing industry. However, amidst these threats, there is a unique opportunity to rebuild a more sustainable and resilient fashion industry. This paper explores the shift from pre-COVID-19 business models and consumption values towards a renaissance characterized by real sustainability. By examining the transition from eco-efficiency to eco-effectiveness and from cradleto- grave to cradle-to-cradle approaches, this study emphasizes the need for the active involvement of key stakeholders in co-creating value for all. Through a comprehensive analysis of the post- COVID era, this study aims to understand textile …
The Bourgeoisie Black Church: An Analysis Of The American Black Church's Aspirations And Imagination, Alexander Robert Booker
The Bourgeoisie Black Church: An Analysis Of The American Black Church's Aspirations And Imagination, Alexander Robert Booker
Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses
I am a product of the Black church. It is my home, my heart, and it has helped me spiritually, financially, and emotionally in many ways throughout my life. However, the church that I love dearly and has provided me with many opportunities has also provided spaces of harm, exclusion, and the promotion of an imperialistic Christ. This tension is not a unique tension for many institutions born in America, but what I see so clearly is the tension between the Black church’s countercultural and resistant roots that started in the brush harbors of the antebellum south and into what …

The Western fascination with geisha began with the travels of Sadayakko (1871–1946) and Hanako (Ōhta Hisa, 1868–1945), the first geisha to perform overseas in the United States and Europe. Hanako’s captivating face inspired Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) to sculpt her numerous times, making her the only Asian he ever depicted. To Rodin, she symbolized Asian beauty and mystery, leading to her Orientalization. Early photographs of Japanese individuals sent to the West, often featuring geisha and kabuki actors, further fueled Western interest in geisha.
The West’s initial encounters with geisha were not part of the Meiji government’s official narrative. Sadayakko, often overlooked …

Recovering The Lost Concept Of Truth In The Restoration Scriptures: Another Key To Understanding God’S Word, Blaine L. Hart
Recovering The Lost Concept Of Truth In The Restoration Scriptures: Another Key To Understanding God’S Word, Blaine L. Hart
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The word “truth” has for practical purposes lost one of its original English-language meanings, and this has significant implications for understanding scriptures. The obvious, well- understood meaning is that which is real or factual. However, the earliest meaning in English is that which is true in an entirely different way, in the sense of fidelity, loyalty, and faithfulness. The King James translators frequently used “truth” in this latter sense. The sense of “truth” as “faithfulness” remained well known in the nineteenth century. Some passages in the Book of Mormon and other Restoration scriptures reveal deeper insights when read with this …
“Our Great God Has In Goodness Sent These”: Notes On The Goodness Of God, The Didactic Good Of Nephi’S Small Plates, And Anti-Nephi-Lehi’S Renaming, Matthew L. Bowen, Pedro A. Olavarria
“Our Great God Has In Goodness Sent These”: Notes On The Goodness Of God, The Didactic Good Of Nephi’S Small Plates, And Anti-Nephi-Lehi’S Renaming, Matthew L. Bowen, Pedro A. Olavarria
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Anti-Nephi-Lehi’s speech (Alma 24:7–16) reveals multiple allusions to significant texts in Nephi’s small plates record. Thus, when he declares “I thank my God, my beloved people, that our great God has in goodness sent these our brethren, the Nephites, unto us to preach unto us,” he appears to allude to an inclusio that bookends the two books of Nephi’s small plates record which emphasizes the “goodness” of God as a theme. Anti-Nephi-Lehi’s description of his ancestors as “wicked fathers” appears to deliberately contrast Laman, Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael with Nephi’s “goodly parents” in 1 Nephi 1:1. The name …

Tailored-Llama: Optimizing Few-Shot Learning In Pruned Llama Models With Task-Specific Prompts, Danyal Aftab, Steven Davy
Conference Papers
Large language models demonstrate impressive proficiency in language understanding and generation. Nonetheless, training these models from scratch, even the least complex billion-parameter variant demands significant computational resources rendering it economically impractical for many organizations. With large language models functioning as general-purpose task solvers, this paper investigates their task-specific fine-tuning. We employ task-specific datasets and prompts to fine-tune two pruned LLaMA models having 5 billion and 4 billion parameters. This process utilizes the pre-trained weights and focuses on a subset of weights using the LoRA method. One challenge in fine-tuning the LLaMA model is crafting a precise prompt tailored to the …
Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan
Indigenous Assimilation And Progressive Mirages: The Globalization Of American Narratives Of Educational Reform, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
In 1928, the Institute for Government Research released the Meriam Report, a massive study of the nation’s Native Americans. Unflinchingly rational, the report criticized federal policy, but it also set a high-minded vision for Native American progress. Celebrated by the press at the time, hailed by historians in the following decades (Bertolet, 2007; Kelly, 1983, Philp, 1977, Szasz, 1974; Downs, 1945), the report became perceived as a turning point in the treatment of Native Americans and signaled a renewed faith in government. A century later, these reforms appear as mirages. In this paper, I show how the Meriam Report cloaks …

Introduction: Telehealth utilization surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering expanded health care access. Audio-only visits emerged as a crucial tool for patients facing technology or connectivity barriers to still use telehealth. This qualitative study aims to better understand patient perceptions of audio-only versus video telehealth visits during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how patients perceive the role of each in their overall health care. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 adult patients seeking care at an academic medical center located in the Southeast region of the United States. Patients had experienced both an audio-only and video telehealth visit within the …
The United Churches Of America: Post-Denominationalism, Theocracy, And Justice Systems, Tyler Joshua Green
The United Churches Of America: Post-Denominationalism, Theocracy, And Justice Systems, Tyler Joshua Green
Doctor of Ministry
The purpose of this research is to the unify, organize and equip Christian churches to address the injustices of disenfranchised communities throughout the United States. This work calls for the 21st Century church to answer a charge to organize post-denominationally in an effort to expand the church’s reputation, reach and resources leveraged to address injustices. Upon identifying the identity crisis of the American church due to the vestiges of colonialism, this provides a totally different means by which churches can be identified beyond worship styles, liturgical idiosyncrasies and even biblical interpretations. Calling on the oneness that Christ invites the body …
Women Senior Pastors In The Black Baptist Church: A Study Of Pathways To Access And Model For Sustainability, Wendy Vanhosen
Women Senior Pastors In The Black Baptist Church: A Study Of Pathways To Access And Model For Sustainability, Wendy Vanhosen
Doctor of Ministry
The thesis of this research is that the continued survival and influence of the Black Church hinges on the level of access and sustainability of women in senior leadership roles, emphasizing the historically protected position of senior pastor. It has become urgently necessary to move the needle beyond engaging in the perpetual debate about the role of women in ministry, and towards solutions that address the unique issues of this contemporary era. This era is characterized by a collision of the rise in women occupying senior leadership roles, increases in social justice concerns, and the unanticipated post-pandemic ramifications that have …
Timmsen: A Criminal Procedure U-Turn Or Just A Detour?, Nancy Jack, Karl T. Muth
Timmsen: A Criminal Procedure U-Turn Or Just A Detour?, Nancy Jack, Karl T. Muth
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
This Article reviews a recent traffic stop case in Illinois that looks unremarkable from a distance but, upon closer examination, contains a variety of criminal procedure questions about traffic stops, mistake of law, formation of suspicion, and—ultimately—the durability and flexibility of the reasonable, articulable suspicion standard itself when a bizarre fact pattern puts it to the test. In People v. Timmsen, the Illinois Supreme Court wrestles with the question of whether wholly legal behavior, when misinterpreted as illegal conduct, can create the basis for a roadside interaction and the evidentiary question of whether, given the facts particular to this …
The Death Of The Evolving Standards Of Decency, Meghan J. Ryan
The Death Of The Evolving Standards Of Decency, Meghan J. Ryan
Florida State University Law Review
The Eighth Amendment Punishments Clause is in jeopardy. The con-stitutionality of punishments is usually judged according to the “evolv-ing standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing socie-ty.” And in evaluating these standards, the Court has traditionally looked to changing societal views on punishment. This is a living con-stitution approach to interpretation, and the Eighth Amendment is the only area of law in which the Court has consistently and explicitly ap-plied such an approach. But a living constitution approach is diamet-rically opposed to the current Court’s focus on originalism. This is the first originalist Court in history, and …

The Impact Of Visuals And Graphic Organizers On Student Learning Of Social Studies, Nicole Eldred
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review examines the impact of nonlinguistic teaching methods on enhancing student learning. The review covers studies on using visuals, Content Acquisition Podcasts (CAPs), videos, and animations to improve vocabulary and content comprehension. Additionally, it investigates graphic organizers in both interactive and pre-made formats as tools to support learning. The findings indicate that combining nonlinguistic and linguistic approaches can significantly increase student understanding. Complex visuals should be paired with verbal explanations and sufficient processing time. Videos are particularly effective for illustrating complex vocabulary. Graphic organizers require careful scaffolding to minimize cognitive load. Premade graphic organizers are effective tools, especially …

The Impact Of Multicultural Literature On Empathy In A Covid-19 World, Jack Kevin Hageman
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This review investigates the isolated nature of distance learning caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on learners in regard to their empathic abilities. This review looks into the socio-emotional growth of the youth and possibilities to rebuild and reinforce the ability to understand and sympathize with the perspectives of others. In part, careful, considerate, and intentional instruction is required to help students establish increased empathy through the critical reading and discussion of multicultural literature. This thesis explores the evidence pertaining to the negative effects of distance learning, investigates the benefits teaching of multicultural literature, and identifies pedagogical approaches …
Theoretically Queer, Practically Straight: Linguistic Negotiations Of Identity And Same-Sex Attraction Among Mormon Men, Chris Vanderstouwe
Theoretically Queer, Practically Straight: Linguistic Negotiations Of Identity And Same-Sex Attraction Among Mormon Men, Chris Vanderstouwe
Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Contemporary popular representations of sexuality have begun to include more non-exclusively heterosexual conceptualizations of sexual identity. Viral media articles and op-ed pieces have sprung up with claims that “surprising numbers of straight men” have had same-sex encounters, promoting a representation of younger generations coming of age as more frequently rejecting identity labels entirely (e.g., DiDomizio 2016; LGBTQ Nation 2016). Many of the recent statements about this seemingly surprising phenomenon are based on a 2016 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that highlights the disparities between sexual identity and sexual practice in men and women ages 18 …

The Best Interests Of The Child In Judicial Perspective: Morocco And Chile As Case-Studies (1990-2020), Susana Sanz-Caballero
Children's Legal Rights Journal
Is there a common understanding in the judiciary process about what “the child’s best interests” are, regardless of geographic location or legal order? In every nation, when disputes impacting minors arise, judges emerge as the final adjudicators. Judges, as final adjudicators, appear to be in the best possible position to determine a child’s best interests and apply the notion fairly and appropriately. However, the concept of a child’s “best interests” is far from uniform, varying across cultures and individual family dynamics. It is an invaluable exercise to review the national case law of different countries to test whether the concept …
