The Qualitative Report
In this article, we share insights regarding an arts-based research project where carers of people with dementia conveyed their experiences in cloth. Carers face high rates of mental ill health and burnout, while forming a largely undervalued and unrecognised workforce. Through this project, carers’ knowledge was valued and amplified using an innovative methodology – craftivism. During a series of five workshops in 2021, a small group of carers, researchers and artists gathered online to develop an exhibition of craftivist textile works. They evoked the complexity of their makers’ journeys supporting loved ones at the end of life, finding joy and …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Origin And Formation Between Chinese Characters And English Alphabets, Xuan Song
A Comparative Analysis Of The Origin And Formation Between Chinese Characters And English Alphabets, Xuan Song
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
This research is based on the framework of social constructivism, utilizing the principle of Human Universals as a methodology to compare the similarities and differences between the ideation and formation methods of Chinese characters and English alphabets. Through comparative analysis of the ideation of English letters (pictogramme) and the origin of Chinese characters, known as the "Six Categories Theory," we discover their alignment in terms of social, traditional, and cultural aspects. This suggests that different ethnic groups share common features in terms of life experience, learning cognitive development, and thinking habits. This study also finds that the origins of English …
Bringing Calligraphy Art Back To Writing – An Exploration Of Calligraphy Education For Chinese Beginners, Xin Zhang
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
Abstract: Chinese calligraphy, often recognized as an iconic representation of Asian culture, is widely regarded as a traditional art form with over thousands of years history. However, it is often overlooked that, at its core, calligraphy is a method of writing. In the process of learning about Asian art, culture, and character history through Chinese calligraphy, we can also introduce Chinese beginners to the art of writing Chinese characters. This integration of traditional Chinese calligraphy as a means of writing Chinese characters with language learning offers numerous advantages for novice learners. It engages their senses of sight, hearing, speech, and …

Task-Based Language Teaching In The Chinese Classroom, Jing Gao
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
This article discusses Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) implemented in the Chinese classroom. TBLT involves a three-phase pedagogical sequence, including pre-task, on-task, and post-task. Different task-based learning activities are designed to promote learners’ language acquisition through the performance of tasks. Learners are engaged in interactive and collaborative communication to accomplish meaningful and relevant real life tasks. This article explores the application of one TBLT unit in Chinese for learners’ language development in terms of both fluency and accuracy.
Sustainable Leadership During Turbulent Times, Paul Marietta
Sustainable Leadership During Turbulent Times, Paul Marietta
Dissertations and Theses
Teachers, administrators, and staff in schools are leaving the profession at unprecedented rates. The principal pipeline has significantly decreased in the past years and our public school system is at a breaking point. Now more than ever, we need to focus on sustainable leadership during turbulent times and helping the organization, students, families, teachers-and also their leaders-thrive. This dissertation proposal follows the Portland State University (PSU) multi-paper format which comprises a compilation of three papers in a journal article style format, with sole or multiple authors, and although PSU policy does not require it, the topic of the papers in …

The Idea Of A Writing Center In Brazil: A Different Beat, Ron Martinez
The Idea Of A Writing Center In Brazil: A Different Beat, Ron Martinez
The Writing Center Journal
This article explores the emergence and development of writing centers in Brazil, using the author’s experience founding the Centro de Assessoria de Publicação Acadêmica (CAPA) at the Universidade Federal do Paraná as a case study. The author provides some historical context about Brazilian education and its traditional “banking model” of education (Paulo Freire) that did not value individual expression—including through writing. This model persisted even as composition studies evolved elsewhere. Academic literacy development in Brazil is thus a relatively recent phenomenon, and the effects of that paucity are felt among scholars in higher education settings. This motivated the author’s research …
An Exploratory Study Of Mindsets, Sense Of Belonging, And Help-Seeking In The Writing Center, Traci Freeman, Steve Getty
An Exploratory Study Of Mindsets, Sense Of Belonging, And Help-Seeking In The Writing Center, Traci Freeman, Steve Getty
The Writing Center Journal
In this exploratory study, we took as our point of departure Lori Salem’s (2016) call to investigate the factors that affect students’ decisions to visit the writing center. Rather than exploring student decision-making through a sociological lens, as Salem does, we drew on insights from social psychology to understand students’ motivations. We explored two self-theories drawn from social psychology that are associated with students’ academic achievement and with students’ help-seeking: (1) implicit beliefs about intelligence or “mindsets”; and (2) sense of belonging. Using questions from previously validated scales, we measured first-year students’ mindsets and sense of belonging and tested the …

Timely, Relevant, Practical: A Study Of Writing Center Summer Institute Alumni Perceptions Of Value And Benefits, Julia Bleakney, Mark Hall, Kelsey Hixson-Bowles, Sohui Lee, Nathalie Singh-Corcoran
The Writing Center Journal
Since its inception in 2003, the IWCA Summer Institute (SI) has been understood within the writing center field to be an important professional development opportunity for new and experienced writing center professionals (WCPs). Publications on the SI to date have focused on anecdotal perceptions of the benefits to leaders and participants or on a single outcome, such as research output. Thus, the writing center field knows little about how and in what ways participants perceive the SI’s benefits across cohorts and across a variety of professional areas. By gathering quantitative and qualitative data from every SI cohort from 2003 to …

Effectively Affective: Examining The Ethos Of One Hbcu Writing Center, Karen Keaton Jackson, Amara Hand
The Writing Center Journal
Over the past several decades, writing center scholarship has evolved to include multiple theories and pedagogies that led to widely used best practices. As is the case in many disciplines, often writing centers at large, research PWIs are most often cited and highlighted within the scholarship. While many of those readings do offer helpful strategies for working with students at all levels, often they do not account for the unique contexts and diverse student populations that make up many HBCUs. As a result, more research from a variety of writing centers is needed so practitioners see there are multiple ways …

Milner Library: Centering Healing As An Act Of Radical Transformation, Maria Tudela, Mallory Jallas
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Milner Library is uniquely positioned as a unit to facilitate student, faculty, and community success with our services and engagement. At this intersection, we implement critical praxis to disrupt traditional notions of academic libraries. Specifically, this poster will address shifting the concept of thriving as a form of production to one that considers how thriving can support and encourage transformational healing. This poster will highlight how our library approaches programming, collection development, instruction, and physical space and examine these concepts as tangible connections in foregrounding critical praxis. Participants can expect to develop new and deeper perspectives on how Milner Library …
Asynchronous And Rhetorical: Appointment Forms And Their Effect On Writer-Consultant Exchanges, Lizzie Hutton, Kate Francis, Danielle Hart, Anita Long, Brenda Tyrrell
Asynchronous And Rhetorical: Appointment Forms And Their Effect On Writer-Consultant Exchanges, Lizzie Hutton, Kate Francis, Danielle Hart, Anita Long, Brenda Tyrrell
The Writing Center Journal
Especially in the wake of the recent pandemic, asynchronous consulting has become increasingly central to writing center work. Yet writing center scholarship has little attended to the significant impact writer input can have on asynchronous writer-consultant exchanges. Drawing on asynchronous consultation data collected before and after our 2019 redesign of our writing center’s asynchronous system, this comparative study examines the specific effect of the writer appointment form on the nature of both writers’ requests for feedback (RFFs) and consultants’ resulting comments. Our findings suggest that differently designed appointments forms can scaffold significantly different kinds of asynchronous writer-consultant exchanges, especially visible …
How Genre-Trained Tutors Affect Student Writing And Perceptions Of The Writing Center, Lucy Bryan Malenke, Laura K. Miller, Paul E. Mabrey Iii, Jared Featherstone
How Genre-Trained Tutors Affect Student Writing And Perceptions Of The Writing Center, Lucy Bryan Malenke, Laura K. Miller, Paul E. Mabrey Iii, Jared Featherstone
The Writing Center Journal
Writing center scholars have long debated whether writers are best served by “generalist” tutors trained in writing center pedagogy or “specialist” tutors with insider knowledge about a course’s content or discipline-specific discourse conventions. A potential compromise that has emerged is training tutors in the purposes and features of specific genres. The writing center literature showcases many different approaches to genre training. However, little empirical research, if any, has explored how tutors’ genre knowledge affects session outcomes. The present study used a mixed-methods approach to compare session outcomes for students who worked with generalist and genre-trained tutors. We analyzed pre-consultation and …
Writing Centers And Neocolonialism: How Writing Centers Are Being Commodified And Exported As U.S. Neocolonial Tools, Brian Hotson, Stevie Bell
Writing Centers And Neocolonialism: How Writing Centers Are Being Commodified And Exported As U.S. Neocolonial Tools, Brian Hotson, Stevie Bell
The Writing Center Journal
In this paper, we explore the complicity of writing centers in the Global North in global neocolonialism despite its resounding rejection within Western writing center scholarship, in which Romeo García contends that writing tutors can be “decolonial agents.” We show that higher education is used by governments in the Global North as a neocolonial tool and situate international U.S. writing center initiatives within this context. Writing centers have remained complicit in global neocolonialism involving the commodification and exportation of American English as well as Western-style institutions, curricula, and pedagogies. This is most explicit in recent writing center initiatives undertaken by …
Listen Up: Children’S And Adults’ Listening Effort For Intelligible L1 And L2 Speech, Ruth Altmiller
Listen Up: Children’S And Adults’ Listening Effort For Intelligible L1 And L2 Speech, Ruth Altmiller
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Understanding speech in an accent or dialect different than one’s own can be challenging. McLaughlin and Van Engen (2020) were the first to quantify this increase in listening effort using Task Evoked Pupillary Response (TEPR), a common measure of cognitive arousal. They found that monolingual, English speaking adults’ pupils dilated more quickly and to a larger degree when listening to nonnative English (here, L2 English) than when listening to natively spoken English (here, L1 English), indicating that the L2 English incurred greater processing demands than the L1 English even though it was fully intelligible. In this dissertation, I build upon …
Are The Church Fathers Relevant In A 21st Century Inculturated And Contextualized Asian Theology?, Emmanuel C. Marfori
Are The Church Fathers Relevant In A 21st Century Inculturated And Contextualized Asian Theology?, Emmanuel C. Marfori
Landas
Is Patristics still relevant in the 21st century? This paper examines the decline of Patristic studies in the 19th–20th centuries and their brief revival before Vatican II, followed by a postconciliar downturn. It proposes that the Church Fathers remain vital for theology today, especially in Asia, where faith and culture intersect in inculturation. As witnesses to Tradition, the Fathers offer models for contextual theological reflection. The paper highlights Tertullian’s Adversus Marcionem, where he defends the unity of Scripture through the Transfiguration. Two key terms—contubernium (friendship) and repromissio (fulfillment of promise)—are translated into Tagalog as pagkakaibigan and katuparan ng pangako, bridging …

Purpose–This interdisciplinary study aims to analyze how service organizations communicate sustainable beliefs in their social media narratives and use them to generate brand awareness, customer recognition and ongoing demand for sustainable service.
Design/methodology/approach– A two-phase exploratory analysis of 10,342 tweets from 2019–2020 was conducted by sustainable global corporations to identify best practices for their social media teams operating within a service-based business model. First, the significant themes were identified using an unguided machine learning approach of three types of firms: services, goods and mixed. Next, the full set of tweets with linguistic sentiment analysis was analyzed followed by a deeper …
Speaking The Unspeakable: Literary Verdict On The Primal Paradox Of Speech (On The Linguistic Poetics Of The “Yale School”, Part Iii), Dengyun Dai
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The Yale School finds that, following the transforming and generating mechanism of the three dimensions of language (the signified dimension, the intersubjective dimension, and the self-reflective and self-concern dimension), literary speech creates numerous signification methods or rhetorical strategies to defuse the primal paradox of speech. These methods or strategies include singularity or distortion, paradoxical expression, and spatialization; repetition, concealment or silence, symbol-giving; the metaphor of metaphor, and thematizing the unspeakable; suspension, generativity, testimony, and self-endowments. They not only reveal the mystery of the unspeakable between the tension of the speakable and the unspeakable, but also lead speech to the primal …
Language And Material: The Life-World Of Ah-Q, Qinghua Cao
Language And Material: The Life-World Of Ah-Q, Qinghua Cao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The image of Ah-Q in Lu Xun's writing is not a carrier of any specific “characteristics”—be it national character or revolutionary spirit—but rather embodies a unique life-world. On the one hand, the individual living being of Ah-Q, who comes from the lowest social class, has been constructed and disciplined by the dominant language system of representation, of which he is also a maintainer and practitioner. On the other hand, he is also shaped by this system into a complete “other”, and is ultimately expelled and even eliminated by the system. As an “other”, Ah-Q's basic desires, rights and social positions …
Signifying And The Feeling Of Differences, Samuel Weber
Signifying And The Feeling Of Differences, Samuel Weber
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
What does Werner Hamacher's concept of archiphilology have in common with Saussure's view of intralinguistic, differential function in language? Perhaps the way in which the indefinite of language itself “slowly defines itself,” both in response to past acts of appropriations, and appealing for new signifieds the meaning of which can only be seized and unseized over time. Several of Kafka's short stories illustrate how literary works play out the same tension within what can be called a “progressive and digressive” narrative, warding off any internal principle of closure or conclusiveness while continuing to require endings and answers. Holderlin's “Remarks on …

On The Aesthetic Characteristics Of Lin Geng's Literary History Writing, Songlai Liu, Cuiyuan Gao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Chinese literary history has been dominated by an excessive emphasis on knowledge and scientism, with comparatively little attention given to aesthetics. However, Lin Geng's literary history stands out due to its remarkable focus on the aesthetic aspects of literature and its unique interpretation of the artistic appeal of literary works. Lin Geng's approach to literary history writing is rooted in his aesthetic theory of life, which demonstrates his profound understanding of aesthetic transcendence and underscores his recognition of the significance of the linguistic form in literature. As such, Lin Geng's literary history writings serve as a useful model for the …

This study investigates the factors influencing the willingness to challenge misinformation on social media across two cultural contexts, the United Kingdom (UK) and Arab countries. A total of 462 participants completed an online survey (250 UK, 212 Arabs). The analysis revealed that three types of negative consequences (relationship cost, negative impact on the person being challenged, futility) and also injunctive norms influence the willingness to challenge misinformation. Cross-cultural comparisons using t-tests showed significant differences between the UK and the Arab countries in all factors except the injunctive norms. Multiple regression analyses identified differences between the UK and Arab participants concerning …

"A Friend Of Tax Collectors And Sinners": An Intertextual Reading Of Luke's Jesus According To Divine Identity And Yhwh Shepherd Language, Dottie H. Rhoads
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Luke’s Gospel has been heralded as the Gospel for the outcast. This study suggests a biblical-theological approach to Luke’s depiction of Jesus that may guide an interpretation of Jesus’ person and activity. This study assumes an intertextual reading of Luke and identifies qualities and activities that he possesses and assumes according to Old Testament texts. Old Testament prophetic texts and Second Temple Jewish texts detailing YHWH’s intentions to return as Shepherd to his scattered and exiled people are examined. Luke’s birth narrative and accounts of dynamic moments in Jesus’ ministry (Lk 15:1-7; 19:1-10) are read in light of this intertextual …

Harbingers Of A New Age: Irish And Scots Irish Indian Fighters On The Colonial American Frontier, Christina A. Neely
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Through the examination of various points of Irish and Scots Irish settlement in the New World, a previously underrepresented portion of American history emerges to tell the story of a hearty and industrious people who literally went out into the wilderness and settled their own communities. Through their hard work and enterprising nature, they were able to not only survive in the face of extreme adversity on the frontier, but they preserved their culture for generations and contributed to the cultural, political, military, religious, and environmental influences that shaped the New World and the American nation. Their martial prowess and …

Indirect Prophecies Concerning The Death Of Christ In Narrative, Lindsay A. Siemers
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In Luke 24, two disciples recognized that Jesus had predicted He would suffer, be betrayed, and handed over to death by crucifixion, and had said He would rise again on the third day. It was now the third day, and Jesus was no longer in the tomb, but they were confused as to what these things meant and how they came to be. Jesus says to them, “‘O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?’ And beginning …

Somali Students In The American Elementary General Music Classroom, Alice L. Charland
Masters Theses
Education must be cognizant of the Somali culture’s inclination to classify music as a morally charged entity. It must also be careful not to forget American cultural values that have defined the music classroom. The purpose of this research was to identify Somali cultural expressions that occur in the American elementary general music classroom and to identify underlying concepts that contribute to these cultural expressions. Additionally, the research sought to bring light to the relationship between the two, so that future music educators might be inspired to create assessments and activities that better suit the needs of all learners.
