Introduction, La Rédaction De « Al-Kīmiyā »

Nowadays, machine translation has become part of many translators’ working environment, and its informed use can add value to their work (Loock, 2019). It is imperative for universities to teach students the necessary skills to adapt to these emerging technologies and a constantly evolving market. The survey, conducted as part of a master’s research thesis, aimed to evaluate the adequacy of post-editing training and its alignment with the reality of the translator’s activity. We sought to measure the role of post-editing in the translator’s activity by surveying professionals through a questionnaire and gathering their feedback on the adequacy of post-editing …

Reframing Palestine: "Mornings In Jenin Or David’S Scar?" A Narrative Account Of The Persian Translation Of Susan Abulhawa’S Mornings In Jenin, Atieh Asadollahi Hamedani Jan 2024

Reframing Palestine: "Mornings In Jenin Or David’S Scar?" A Narrative Account Of The Persian Translation Of Susan Abulhawa’S Mornings In Jenin, Atieh Asadollahi Hamedani

Al-Kīmiyā

This article, with narrative theory mainly of Baker applied, explores how the translation of Susan Abulhawa’s Mornings in Jenin in Persian reframes the Palestinian-Israeli conflict narrated by a Palestinian-American author. The hyphenated narrative position of the author provides her with more than the narratives of a monolithic ‘self’ and makes her challenge some of them. The language (English) she has chosen to narrate in also reveals the global audience her narrative is targeted at. However, the translator doesn’t seem to associate her translation with such a narrative position of the author on the issue of self/other. The narrative aimed to …

Le Français Au Sénégal De 1817 À 1960 : D’Une Langue Imposée À Une Langue Qui S’Est Imposée, Harouna Dior

Al-Kīmiyā

Today’s study traces the course of the French language and the role it played during colonization in Senegal. It is a mission that it accomplished well and which allowed it to be chosen as the official language of independent Senegal in 1960. The article looks back on the use of French from mutual education to the accession of the country to independence, passing through the secular school and the school of the hostages of Faidherbe, as well as the major reorganization of teaching in 1903 in the AOF. Then, the impact of the exclusive use of French in colonial education …

تجلّيات أيديولوجيّة في عالم الترجميّة, Nabiha Maktabi Jan 2024

تجلّيات أيديولوجيّة في عالم الترجميّة, Nabiha Maktabi

Al-Kīmiyā

Most of the time, translators strive to achieve absolute neutrality towards the text they are translating. However, to what extent can this neutrality be achieved, and what is the distance that may separate the translator from the text? Translators can be affected by multiple factors, including cultural, ideological, and psychological factors that can influence their neutrality. In view of that, this article sheds light on the impact of ideological factors on the translation process. It examines various ideologies that may affect the work of the translator, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, and ultimately, how these influences manifest in the …

Le Schème, Concept Fondateur De La Grammaire Arabe : À La Recherche Des Origines, Madyan Matar Jan 2024

Le Schème, Concept Fondateur De La Grammaire Arabe : À La Recherche Des Origines, Madyan Matar

Al-Kīmiyā

Researching the roots of grammatical ideas remains a far-reaching scientific undertaking, as it leads to a better understanding of the epistemic foundations of grammatical theories. Thus, the aim of this paper is to explore the first historical clues as to the potential origins of the concept of pattern (wazn), one of the flagship concepts of Arabic grammar. Since no one in the scientific community seems to have brought up where this concept came from before, the current study intends to start by discussing the hypotheses that could identify the origins of the concept. The paper then draws on the available …

De La Spécificité De L’Interprétation Par Téléphone (Français-Arabe) – Étude De Terrain, Mohannad Alhalaki

Al-Kīmiyā

This field study was carried out with 10 public service interpreters by telephone in France with the aim of highlighting the aspects considered by practitioners as a source of constraints specific to the French-Arabic language pair. Three main questions were addressed with the participants: (1) the difficulties inherent to the variety of dialects spoken by Arabic-speaking users and (2) the issues of cultural differences between interpreter and users. The thematic analysis of data collected highlighted production and comprehension constraints due to the large dialectal diversity in the Arabic-speaking world, which partly explains the effort made by interpreters to adapt their …

Mindfulness Practice And Nonself Perspective Foster Happiness And Flourishing Through The Stewardship Of The Sense Of Self, Niramon Coombs

Mindfulness Studies Theses

Mindfulness meditation is a self-regulation practice that cultivates and grounds attention and awareness in the present moment to enhance voluntary cognitive control of the physical and mental state of being. This practice positively impacts calmness, clarity, and concentration. Multiple reviews and meta-analyses have consistently demonstrated mindfulness significant physical and psychological health benefits. Despite mainstream interest and popularity, most mindfulness teaching in America omits the concept of nonself and other specific core contents of the practice. The comprehensive Buddhist teachings of dhamma (universal truth about self, the human condition, and the nature of our existence) can be a valuable and appropriate …

Measuring Culturally And Contextually Specific Distress Among Afghan, Iraqi, And Great Lakes African Refugees, Ryeora Choe, David T Lardier, Julia Meredith Hess, Meredith A Blackwell, Suha Amer, Martin Ndayisenga, Sara Deewa, Brian Isakson, Jessica R Goodkind

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

Culturally and contextually valid measurement of psychological distress is critical, given the increasing numbers of forcibly displaced people and transnational migration. This study replicates an inductive process that elicited culturally specific expressions, understandings, and idioms of distress among Afghans to develop culturally specific measures of distress for Great Lakes Africans and Iraqis and expands this methodology to include a focus on the contexts of refugees resettled in the United States. To create the measures, we adapted Miller et al.'s (2006) model for the

The Power Of Words: A Study Of The Origins And Employment Of The Terms إسلامي, إسلاموي And إسلامجي In Modern Arabic Political Discourse, Ayman Haj-Yasīn Jan 2024

The Power Of Words: A Study Of The Origins And Employment Of The Terms إسلامي, إسلاموي And إسلامجي In Modern Arabic Political Discourse, Ayman Haj-Yasīn

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث

This study discusses the coinage and uses of the terms إسلامي , إسلاموي , and إسلامجي in modern Arabic political discourse. It aims to show that the construction and employment of these terms is connected to specific 'developments' in Arabic language and in modern Arab history, and that these 'developments' cannot be separated from the Western impact on Arabic thought and modern Islam. The study strives to uncover the logic behind the construction of each term in relation to the other terms and to certain developments in modern Arabic discourse. It also shows the important role translation, as a linguistic …

“I’M Staying And You’Re Gonna Love Me”: Finding Authentic Freedom & Fostering Belonging As Black Female Early Faculty, Roszina D. Scott, Tinotenda Mupambo Jan 2024

“I’M Staying And You’Re Gonna Love Me”: Finding Authentic Freedom & Fostering Belonging As Black Female Early Faculty, Roszina D. Scott, Tinotenda Mupambo

The Journal of Advancing Education Practice

The purpose of this reflection is to expand the knowledge on the retention of early Black female faculty by exploring their challenges and triumphs in dismantling Whiteness and developing an authentic sense of belonging in the academy. In higher education, Black women experience marginalization at the intersection of anti-black racism and sexism. Faculty of color experience racial microaggressions, excessive workloads and service expectations, and their expertise is seldom recognized. Despite these challenges, marginalized faculty authentically persist and find a sense of belonging within the ivory tower by building mentorship relationships, departmental DEI efforts, opportunities for innovation, and cultivating Black sisterhood. …

Enhancing Aviation Safety: Addressing Miscommunication Between Pilots And Air Traffic Controllers, Thomas A. Evans Jr., Mabel K. Madume, Agathe A. Emeran, Christian Trowbridge, Waseem Albunayyan

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Miscommunication in aviation refers to the misinterpretation of instructions by the pilots or controllers that is indicated by the absence of readback or incomplete instruction. Clear communication between pilots and air traffic controllers is vital for safe and efficient aircraft operations, preventing potential disasters. In the years 1999-2019, miscommunication contributed to 37,908 aviation accidents, emphasizing the urgent need for improved communication protocols. This poster categorizes aviation miscommunications into groups such as no communication, language barriers, phraseology problems, and misunderstandings stemming from accents or vocabulary differences. The objectives of this poster are identifying forms of miscommunication and evaluating their impact on …

English Language Challenges Faced By Licensed Guide Interpreters In Japan, Naoko Tanaka Jan 2024

English Language Challenges Faced By Licensed Guide Interpreters In Japan, Naoko Tanaka

International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research

This study investigates the challenges licensed guide interpreters in Japan encounter related to using the English language by examining foreign language tour guides’ use of English through interviews and surveys. The findings reveal that guides prioritise effectively conveying information and cautionary points to guests. They adjust their speaking speed, pronunciation, volume, vocabulary, and sentence structures to ensure easy understanding. Approximately 80% of the vocabulary used is at or below B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), indicating the issues which non-native speakings guides face. Moreover, they use various methods to confirm understanding, such as repeating …

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch Jan 2024

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in self-supervised learning have made it possible to reuse information-rich models that have been generally pre-trained on massive amounts of data for other downstream tasks. But the pre-training process can be drastically different from the fine-tuning training process, which can lead to inefficient learning. We address this disconnect in training dynamics by structuring the learning process like an open system in thermodynamics. Open systems can achieve a steady state when low-entropy inputs are converted to high-entropy outputs. We modify the the model and the learning process to mimic this behavior, and attend more to elements of the input …

Time, Place, & Purpose: The Performance Of Creole Identity In Louisiana, Rachel N. Aker Jan 2024

Time, Place, & Purpose: The Performance Of Creole Identity In Louisiana, Rachel N. Aker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Though much of the early development of Louisiana Creole culture can be found in New Orleans, the culture spread and continued to grow throughout the rest of South Louisiana in both similar and different ways. Expanding beyond Joseph Roach’s treatment of Creole cultural performances in New Orleans in Cities of the Dead (1996) and journeying across land and water, this project identifies more Creole cultural performance as they emerge across place and time. I present Louisiana and the Gulf South as a kind of inland archipelago, with the currents of culture-creation moving in and around distinct community enclaves. The flow …

Speech Play On A Character’S Name: A Case Study Of Uncle Buḍh In A Thai Novel, Thiyot . . . Waew Siang Khruan Khlang (Death Whisperer), Direk Hongthong

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

The film adaptation of the novel Thiyot . . . Waew Siang Khruan Khlang (Death Whisperer) in 2023 significantly devalued the role of Uncle Buḍh, an important character in the novel. This article aims to reveal the ingenuity and importance of this character in the novel by studying it within the framework of speech play. The study reveals that the name “Buḍh” (พุฒ ิ) plays with sounds and meanings, through which device the character’s role is enhanced. The name can be pronounced in two ways: /put/ and /putthi/. The first pronunciation corresponds with the words “Buḍh” (พุฒ), “Buddh” (พุทธ), and …

The Ideal “Home/Family” Vs. (Possibly) Unbeautiful Realities: Meanings And Reflections In Kadee Rak Raang, Wipada Rattanadilok Na Phuket

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This analysis of the novel Kadee Rak Raang (The Case of Abandoned Love) is aimed at studying the changing meaning of the word “home” as illustrated in the text and at examining the home as a space where the roles and identities of women are expressed. The researcher posits that home is not just a physical space, but also a cultural space. Ideally, home/family is characterized by having complete family members, being a happy space, and being a safe zone or a mental shelter. However, when this ideal cannot be maintained, the concept of home/ family may be negotiated and …

From “Black” To “Khaek”: Thai Superiority And Ethnic Assimilation In King Vajiravudh’S Adaptation Of Othello, Phaya Ratchawangsan, Faris Yothasamuth Jan 2024

From “Black” To “Khaek”: Thai Superiority And Ethnic Assimilation In King Vajiravudh’S Adaptation Of Othello, Phaya Ratchawangsan, Faris Yothasamuth

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Phaya Ratchawangsan is a Thai adaptation by King Vajiravudh in 1911 of Shakespeare’s Othello. It mainly follows the plot of Othello, but the settings and all characters are changed to resemble Thai places and names. Othello the Moor becomes the Malay general Phaya Ratchawangsan. As Othello presents the relationship between the “blackamoor” and white Europeans, so Phaya Ratchawangsan presents the relationship between the Malay outsider or “Khaek” and Thais. This article argues that as King Vajiravudh transposed Othello to the Thai setting, the racial theme persisted. While Phaya Ratchawangsan does not exhibit a direct racist thought that targets the Malay, …

Nest/Ing Un/Methodologies, Jayne Osgood, Claire Walsh Jan 2024

Nest/Ing Un/Methodologies, Jayne Osgood, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

A dense, pungent, brown-green, intricately woven, itchy-silky, moss-strewn, twig- ridden ball brought us together.Since then, nest(ing)[i] has become a shared methodology - nest/ing has offered a praxis of getting to know each other, getting to know nests (better) and it has become a capacious writing methodology. Taking nest(ing) seriously has drawn into sharp focus the perils of human exceptionalism. Nesting has gifted opportunities to wallow in porous boundaries and to luxuriate in modes of liminal reading/writing/experimenting, informed by a feminist politics to imagine the world differently (Despret, 2016). It is through lively storytelling, involving passing patterns back and forth that …

Extended Event Calculus Using Neutrosophic Logic: Method, Implementation, Analysis, Recent Progress And Future Directions, Antonios Paraskevas

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Brains do not reason as digital computers do. Computers reason in clear steps with statements that are either true or false, while humans reason with vague terms of common sense. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy and machine intelligence that deals with neutralities, specifically the idea of indeterminacy that is evident and experienced in our everyday lives. Indeterminacy is interpreted as everything that falls between a concept, idea, statement, declaration, etc. and its opposite. The fundamental thesis of neutrosophy is to employ neutrosophic logic, an extension of fuzzy logic, to incorporate fuzzy truth into complex schemes of formal reasoning. …

Literary Theory For Llms, David J. Gunkel Jan 2024

Literary Theory For Llms, David J. Gunkel

Newhouse Impact Journal

Recent criticism of large language models (LLM) and generative AI have focused on the way that these applications are little more than Stochostic Parrots—technological devices that generate seemingly intelligible statements but do not know and cannot understand a word of what they say. If the terms of these evaluations sound familiar, they should. They are rooted in foundational concepts regarding language and technology that have been definitive of Western systems of knowing since the time of Plato. The current crop of critical correctives and well-intended LLM hype-reduction efforts reproduce—or one might be tempted to say “parrot”—this ancient wisdom. And it …
