Ecumenical Dialogue Between Reformers And Orthodox Under The Ottomans (15-16th Century), Svetoslav Svetoszarov Ribolov Jan 2024

Ecumenical Dialogue Between Reformers And Orthodox Under The Ottomans (15-16th Century), Svetoslav Svetoszarov Ribolov

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Despite the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453, the Orthodox Church continued to make contacts with the West. In the 15th and 16th centuries, Patriarchs Joasaph II and Jeremias II had ecumenical contacts and theological dialogues with two generations of Reformers. Martin Luther and Melanchthon, and later Martin Crusius, Jakob Andrеä, and their associates in Wittenberg took up the initiative for a serious ecumenical dialogue with Constantinople. Despite a sincere desire on both sides, lack of a common methodological framework in the talks did not allow for significant results. In the end, both sides did not …

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Extant literature documents a higher rate of language/speech disorders in males; however, despite sex being a potential moderator of outcomes, we do not know what role it plays in early vocal behavior of infants at high risk for such disorders. The purpose of this study was to ask: (1) Do high-risk infants demonstrate atypical vocal development patterns? (2) Is the quality and quantity of early babble distinct for male and female infants, and does this pattern vary across risk? To answer these questions, we examined the canonical babbling ratio (CBR; the ratio of canonical syllables, those with a consonant and …

Automatically Detecting Expensive Prompts And Configuring Firewall Rules To Mitigate Denial Of Service Attacks On Large Language Models, Assaf Namer, Prashant Kulkarni, Erik Jeansson, Brandon Maltzman, Hauke Vagts

Defensive Publications Series

Denial of service attacks on generative artificial intelligence systems, e.g., large language models (LLMs), can include sending LLMs requests that include expensive prompts designed to consume computing resources and degrade model performance. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically detect such prompts and then configure firewall rules that prevent such prompts in subsequent requests from reaching the LLM. Per the techniques, prompts provided to an LLM are matched against input and output token size as well as resource utilization to identify prompts that deviate significantly from a baseline. Expensive prompts are identified, and semantically similar prompts are automatically generated using the …

Relevance Theory And The Social Realities Of Communication, Marilynn Johnson Jan 2024

Relevance Theory And The Social Realities Of Communication, Marilynn Johnson

Philosophy: Faculty Scholarship

A central tenet of theories of meaning in the Gricean tradition—such as Relevance Theory—is that others will come to believe certain things simply by recognizing our intentions to communicate. In this article I demonstrate that this is not equally the case for all interlocutors; some bear additional burdens. In particular, I argue that this can happen in two ways. First, I demonstrate how a response to persistent testimonial injustice can be understood in terms of Sperber and Wilson’s distinction between meaning-that and showing-that; a speaker who experiences repeated testimonial injustice will often move down the meaning vs. showing continuum. This …

Robots As Pirates, Henry H. Perritt Jr. Jan 2024

Robots As Pirates, Henry H. Perritt Jr.

Catholic University Law Review

Generative AI has created much excitement over its potential to create new works of authorship in the literary and graphical realms. Its underling machine-learning technology works by analyzing the relations among elements of preexisting material in enormous databases assembled from publicly available and licensed sources. Its algorithms “learn” to predict “what comes next” in different types of expression. A complete system thus can become glib in creating new factual summaries, essays, fictional stories and images.

A number of authors of the raw material used by Generative AI engines claim that the machine learning process infringes their copyrights. Careful evaluation of …

Culturally Responsive Teaching And Learning Achievement, Jose Rivera Jan 2024

Culturally Responsive Teaching And Learning Achievement, Jose Rivera

Education Dissertations

Over the last decades the United States demographics reflect an increase in student diversity and multilanguage learners have changed the landscape of the education system. Educators are having a difficult time connecting, reaching, and teaching many of these diverse and multilingual learners. As a result, culturally and linguistically diverse students are not successful in school and are pushed out of secondary schools at an alarming rate. The United States educational system faces a glaring discrepancy of teacher and student demographics. In America 84% of teachers are White not Hispanic, only 6% of teachers are Latino/Hispanic, 8% are Black and less …

Ephemeral Domesticity: Campsite, Julia Capomaggi Jan 2024

Ephemeral Domesticity: Campsite, Julia Capomaggi

Interiority

The fleeting nature of life and the resulting transformation of inhabited spaces into artefacts that take on different socio-spatial forms through temporary shelters such as cabins, tents, and trailers is a major theme explored particularly in the 1960s and 1970s that introduced the concept of time into the formation of transient communities. This article focuses on the issue of the endless interior generated by transience in group living linked to tourism and recreational leisure, specifically elective nomadism, which represents alternative models of colonisation and the relationship between habitat and nature. Although the origins of these ideas can be traced back …

Investigation Of Machine Learning Driven Adaptive Control Strategy For Heat Exchanger Under Varying Fouling Conditions, Reshma Madhu Pk Jan 2024

Investigation Of Machine Learning Driven Adaptive Control Strategy For Heat Exchanger Under Varying Fouling Conditions, Reshma Madhu Pk

Theses and Dissertations

Fouling is an undesirable and inevitable phenomenon that affects Heat Exchanger (HE) dynamics, increases maintenance cost (>50%), and loss of production. Conventional fouling prediction and control techniques demand an in-depth understanding of the HE-specific fouling dynamics. Hence, machine learning emerges as an ideal tool for learning the fouling process from the available measurement dataset.

The proposed work aims to design a machine learning-driven adaptive control technique for an industrial HE, subjected to varying fouling conditions. Naphtha cooler, an industrial HE utilized in petroleum refineries, employs cooling water to lower Naphtha temperature, but the high impurities in the recycled cooling …

Unveiling Efficiency: Investigating Distance Measures In Wastewater Treatment Using Interval-Valued Neutrosophic Fuzzy Soft Set, Muhammad Saeed, Kinza Kareem, Fatima Razzaq, Muhammad Saqlain

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

To reduce the threats that wastewater poses to human health and the environment, water treatment techniques must be improved. The use of a procedure that includes preparation, testing, primary and secondary treatments, filtration, disinfection, and continuous monitoring is therefore required. The objective of this research is to create a hybrid notion that extends the idea of an interval-valued neutrosophic fuzzy soft set (IVNFSS) to an interval-valued neutrosophic fuzzy set. Operations like complement, union, and integration are included in the idea. To improve decision-making accuracy, a quality-assessment distance measure is incorporated, offering a numerical representation of the disparity between various factors. …

“With Revolutionary Love…”: An Endarkened Narrative Inquiry Of Black Students’ (Re)Membered Experiences In A Black English Teacher’S Classroom As Influential To Them Becoming Teachers, Shekema S. Dunlap

Student Theses and Dissertations

This Endarked Feminist Narrative Inquiry explored how three Black, Metropolitan Atlanta High School students' classroom experiences receiving Revolutionary Love (RL) from a Black teacher influenced their decision to become educators. Through RL, the Black teacher embodied a kinship love that 1) holds Black students (and ourselves) accountable, 2) holds space for Black students, 3) helps Black students heal from systemic racism, and 4) helps Black students escape multiplied oppressions. Furthermore, the study investigated whether the Black students’—now classroom teachers—experiences receiving revolutionary love from their Black teacher influenced their pedagogical praxes. Black teachers' past and present roles in the fight for …
