Immigrant Women From Iran And Afghanistan In Sweden: Experiences Of Domestic Violence During The Covid Pandemic, Fatemeh Hamedanian Feb 2024

Immigrant Women From Iran And Afghanistan In Sweden: Experiences Of Domestic Violence During The Covid Pandemic, Fatemeh Hamedanian

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

This paper explores the firsthand experiences of immigrant women victims of domestic violence amidst the COVID-19 crisis. Sixteen Iranian and Afghan women residing in Sweden were interviewed. Their responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. An intersectional perspective was used to understand domestic violence among the immigrant women. The study found high levels of psychological violence and controlling behavior by the women’s partners. The harm was compounded by economic instability, the temporality of residency permits, and the limited access to support services. The intersectional analysis suggests that multiple factors in the midst of the pandemic increase the vulnerability of abused …

The Rhetorical Mediator: Understanding Agency In Indigenous Translation And Interpretation Through Indigenous Approaches To Ux, Nora K. Rivera

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

The Rhetorical Mediator reveals how and why scholars and user experience (UX) researchers can include Indigenous technical communicators and oral interpretation practices in their interdisciplinary conversations. Nora Rivera analyzes the challenges that Indigenous interpreters and translators face in Peru, Mexico, and the United States as a means of understanding their agency and examines the various ways in which technical and professional communication, translation and interpreting studies, and UX research can better support the practices of Indigenous interpreters and translators.

Cognitive Stimulation As A Mechanism Linking Socioeconomic Status And Neural Function Supporting Working Memory: A Longitudinal Fmri Study, Lucy A. Lurie, Maya L. Rosen, David G. Weissman, Laura Machlin, Lilliana Lengua, Margaret A. Sheridan, Katie A. Mclaughlin Feb 2024

Cognitive Stimulation As A Mechanism Linking Socioeconomic Status And Neural Function Supporting Working Memory: A Longitudinal Fmri Study, Lucy A. Lurie, Maya L. Rosen, David G. Weissman, Laura Machlin, Lilliana Lengua, Margaret A. Sheridan, Katie A. Mclaughlin

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

Childhood experiences of low socioeconomic status are associated with alterations in neural function in the frontoparietal network and ventral visual stream, which may drive differences in working memory. However, the specific features of low socioeconomic status environments that contribute to these disparities remain poorly understood. Here, we examined experiences of cognitive deprivation (i.e. decreased variety and complexity of experience), as opposed to experiences of threat (i.e. violence exposure), as a potential mechanism through which family income contributes to alterations in neural activation during working memory. As part of a longitudinal study, 148 youth between aged 10 and 13 years completed …

Interacting With Korean Sijo Poetry Through Stereoscopic Reading, Katerina R. Bucek Feb 2024

Interacting With Korean Sijo Poetry Through Stereoscopic Reading, Katerina R. Bucek

ALL - Honors Theses

The process of stereoscopic reading highlights different aspects of a piece by using multiple translations and the source text in the same space. When applied to sijo, stereoscopic reading provides insight into both the meaning and art form of the poems, which could not be achieved through a single translation. Stereoscopic reading was introduced by translator and professor Jo Anne Engelbert as a method of reading and teaching foreign language texts. I argue that the stereoscopic reading method is compatible with Korean sijo in a way that reveals the complexity of the poems on both linguistic and stylistic levels and …

Mitigating Fine-Grained Hallucination By Fine-Tuning Large Vision-Language Models With Caption Rewrites, Lei Wang, Jiabang He, Shenshen Li, Ning Liu, Ee-Peng Lim Feb 2024

Mitigating Fine-Grained Hallucination By Fine-Tuning Large Vision-Language Models With Caption Rewrites, Lei Wang, Jiabang He, Shenshen Li, Ning Liu, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large language models (LLMs) have shown remarkable performance in natural language processing (NLP) tasks. To comprehend and execute diverse human instructions over image data, instruction-tuned large vision-language models (LVLMs) have been introduced. However, LVLMs may suffer from different types of object hallucinations. Nevertheless, LVLMs are evaluated for coarse-grained object hallucinations only (i.e., generated objects non-existent in the input image). The fine-grained object attributes and behaviors non-existent in the image may still be generated but not measured by the current evaluation methods. In this paper, we thus focus on reducing fine-grained hallucinations of LVLMs. We propose ReCaption, a framework that consists …

M3sa: Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Based On Multi-Scale Feature Extraction And Multi-Task Learning, Changkai Lin, Hongju Cheng, Qiang Rao, Yang Yang Feb 2024

M3sa: Multimodal Sentiment Analysis Based On Multi-Scale Feature Extraction And Multi-Task Learning, Changkai Lin, Hongju Cheng, Qiang Rao, Yang Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sentiment analysis plays an indispensable part in human-computer interaction. Multimodal sentiment analysis can overcome the shortcomings of unimodal sentiment analysis by fusing multimodal data. However, how to extracte improved feature representations and how to execute effective modality fusion are two crucial problems in multimodal sentiment analysis. Traditional work uses simple sub-models for feature extraction, and they ignore features of different scales and fuse different modalities of data equally, making it easier to incorporate extraneous information and affect analysis accuracy. In this paper, we propose a Multimodal Sentiment Analysis model based on Multi-scale feature extraction and Multi-task learning (M 3 SA). …

Reimagining Public Safety: Defining “Community” In Participatory Research, Naomi Levy, Amy E. Lerman, Peter Dixon Feb 2024

Reimagining Public Safety: Defining “Community” In Participatory Research, Naomi Levy, Amy E. Lerman, Peter Dixon

Political Science

In the context of a national movement to defund police departments, many American cities are starting to reimagine public safety, as activists demand new practices that maintain safety while minimizing harm, as well as ensuring accountability when harms occur. Drawing on Everyday Peace Indicators methodologies, we argue that “community-centered” measurement, combined with researcher-practitioner partnerships, can help move both researchers and policymakers toward a more meaningful approach to policy design and evaluation. However, the application of community-centered measurement to the context of American policing raises important theoretical and practical concerns—in particular, the question of how community is defined, and who gets …
