Improving Automatic Transcription Using Natural Language Processing, Anna Kiefer Mar 2024

Improving Automatic Transcription Using Natural Language Processing, Anna Kiefer

Master's Theses

Digital Democracy is a CalMatters and California Polytechnic State University initia-
tive to promote transparency in state government by increasing access to the Califor-
nia legislature. While Digital Democracy is made up of many resources, one founda-
tional step of the project is obtaining accurate, timely transcripts of California Senate
and Assembly hearings. The information extracted from these transcripts provides
crucial data for subsequent steps in the pipeline. In the context of Digital Democracy,
upleveling is when humans verify, correct, and annotate the transcript results after
the legislative hearings have been automatically transcribed. The upleveling process
is done with the …

The Effect Of Hyperbole On The Perceived Helpfulness Of Amazon Product Reviews, Katherine M. Pierce Mar 2024

The Effect Of Hyperbole On The Perceived Helpfulness Of Amazon Product Reviews, Katherine M. Pierce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hyperbole is frequently used in interpersonal communication, yet little is known about its communicative function in casual discourse. This study aims to clarify the function of hyperbole in everyday speech, particularly in persuasive communication. Using Amazon product reviews, this study explores the effect of hyperbole and the moderating effects of term valence (i.e., positive and negative hyperbole) and product type (i.e., search and experience goods), on review helpfulness, which serves the measure of persuasion. The presence of positive and negative hyperbolic terms in over 22,000 product reviews was computed via LIWC. Individual Tobit regression analyses were performed for hyperbole and …

Cultural Context Index: A Geospatial Measure Of Social Determinants Of Health In The United States, Alaina M Beauchamp, Gordon C Shen, Syed H Hussain, Atif Adam, Linda Highfield, Kai Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Minority populations will continue to grow in the United States. Such pluralism necessitates iterative, geospatial measurements of cultural contexts. Our objective in this study was to create a measure of social determinants of health in geographic areas with varying ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity in the United States. We extracted geographic information systems data based on community characteristics that have known associations with population health disparities from 2015 to 2019. We used principal component analysis to construct a Cultural Context Index (CCI). We created the CCI for 73,682 census tracts across 50 states and five inhabited territories. We identified hot …

Can Neural Networks Reach Human Vision Levels On Object Recognition Tasks?, Luke D. Baumel, Mikayla Cutler, Matt Hyatt, Joseph Tocco, William Friebel, Nicholas Baker Dr., George K. Thiruvathukal Dr. Mar 2024

Can Neural Networks Reach Human Vision Levels On Object Recognition Tasks?, Luke D. Baumel, Mikayla Cutler, Matt Hyatt, Joseph Tocco, William Friebel, Nicholas Baker Dr., George K. Thiruvathukal Dr.

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Object recognition is a crucial function of biological vision; it allows us to draw conclusions about a visual scene that transcends the image formed by the retina. However, the task of object recognition quickly becomes a challenge when hindrances such as viewing angle, object distance from observer, illuminant qualities, and potential occlusions become active variables. Additionally, the diversity of visual features within the same category of object, coupled with the numerous contexts in which an object may be observed is demonstrative of the formidable task that is object recognition. Previous research showed a significant texture bias in Convolutional Neural Networks’ …

A Staged Framework For Llm-Powered Information Extraction In Government Contracts, Jung H. Yae

Theses and Dissertations

The manual extraction of meaningful insights and conversion of content into structured forms to enhance document processing require substantial resources and are susceptible to errors. Despite numerous applications of various Natural Language Processing (NLP) models to streamline the manual process, challenges persist due to domain-specific data constraints and the deficiency of annotated data. This study attempts to address these challenges by leveraging a Large Language Model (LLM) to analyze government contracts. Through rigorous evaluation, we demonstrate the LLM’s effectiveness in information extraction and mitigating hallucinations, achieving a 87.86% accuracy in metadata extraction.

Measuring The Menu, Not The Food: “Psychometric” Data May Instead Measure “Lingometrics” (And Miss Its Greatest Potential), Jan Ketil Arnulf, Ulf Henning Olsson, Kim Nimon

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

This is a review of a range of empirical studies that use digital text algorithms to predict and model response patterns from humans to Likert-scale items, using texts only as inputs. The studies show that statistics used in construct validation is predictable on sample and individual levels, that this happens across languages and cultures, and that the relationship between variables are often semantic instead of empirical. That is, the relationships among variables are given a priori and evidently computable as such. We explain this by replacing the idea of “nomological networks” with “semantic networks” to designate computable relationships between abstract …

State Institutions In Northeast Thailand: Lao Ethnics And The Thai Identity, Jacob Ricks Mar 2024

State Institutions In Northeast Thailand: Lao Ethnics And The Thai Identity, Jacob Ricks

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this last chapter on state representation, we focus on a case where there has been an absence of demands. In Northeast Thailand, the large ethnic Lao population has not demanded cultural concessions from the state. In fact, not only have the demands been absent, but most people in the region see themselves as Thai (the broader national identity) or Isan (a moniker meaning “northeast”)—as opposed to ethnically Lao. The absence of the Lao identity has less to do with the absence of civic associations from the bottom up than with the absence of political representation from the top down. …

Age And Ideology: The Emergence Of New Political Cleavages In Thailand’S 2566 (2023) Election, Napon Jatusripitak, Jacob Ricks

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Move Forward Party’s victory in Thailand’s 14 May 2566 (2023 CE) election surprised most observers, defying widespread predictions of a Pheu Thai win. Departing from traditional vote-mobilization strategies, Move Forward’s campaign focused largely on social media and broad calls for political reform while eschewing the vote-canvassing networks and economic policy promises that had delivered victory after victory for Pheu Thai. Does Move Forward’s win indicate changes in Thai voting behaviour? Relying on data from an original survey collected the week before and the week after the election, as well as observations from fieldwork, we identify two political cleavages that …

“Major” Challenges For Lower Courts: Inconsistent Applications Of The Major Questions Doctrine In Lower Courts After West Virginia V. Environmental Protection Agency, Sarah A. Schmoyer Mar 2024

“Major” Challenges For Lower Courts: Inconsistent Applications Of The Major Questions Doctrine In Lower Courts After West Virginia V. Environmental Protection Agency, Sarah A. Schmoyer

Fordham Law Review

Under the major questions doctrine, an agency requires clear congressional authorization to regulate on an issue of major national significance. Although a version of the doctrine has existed for several years, its rise in importance is recent. The U.S. Supreme Court invoked the doctrine by name for the first time in 2022 in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency, warning that in certain “extraordinary cases,” the “history and the breadth” and the “economic and political significance” of the agency action may “provide a reason to hesitate” before accepting the agency’s authority. West Virginia has since inspired a wave of …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This paper is an in-depth study that starts from a preliminary one, where we surveyed 141 ranchers from the town of Coto-Coto in Peru to obtain as much information as possible about the relationship between two economic variables, Activity Cost and Financial Management. Furthermore, we study the correlation of the first one of them with three other economic vari ables. To do this, we process the survey data using logical operators with the support of the plithogenic statistics theory. These results given in the form of plithogenic values are logically aggregated and were converted to crisp values and studied through …

A Photographic Exploration Of Wigi (Currently Called Humboldt Bay), Aldaron Laird Mar 2024

A Photographic Exploration Of Wigi (Currently Called Humboldt Bay), Aldaron Laird

Trade & Scholarly Monographs

For decades, Aldaron has walked the shores of the bay, climbed its nearby sand dunes, and kayaked its entire periphery, taking over 25,000 photos that reveal the beauty of Wigi as it might appear in some magical, glimmering dream. From those thousands of photos, Aldaron selected 119 for this book. For each photo he kept, he discarded 209 others, which means that of those 25,000 images, he used less than one percent. We might think that taking all those photos required a tremendous amount of work, but it soon becomes clear that Aldaron did not work on this book, he …

An Nlp-Based Knowledge Extraction Approach For It Tech-Support/Helpdesk Transcripts, Gary Yu Zhao

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

In the realm of IT support, it is crucial to extract valuable information from various support channels, such as telephone, web chat, email, and social media. This extracted knowledge can help organizations prioritize customer-centric approaches and improve customer service. It also has broader applications, from decision support to product development and human resources policies. Traditionally, extracting knowledge from unstructured text was time-consuming and inefficient, but natural language processing (NLP) techniques demonstrated potential for extracting valuable insights in a variety of application contexts. However, their efficacy and potential in the context of domain-specific IT support transcripts remain primarily limited.

Everyone And No One In The Detroit Techno Experience, Angela R. Whitlock Mar 2024

Everyone And No One In The Detroit Techno Experience, Angela R. Whitlock

Publications

This project employs phenomenological and poststructuralist modes of inquiry to examine the relationship between techno’s utilization of abject experiences and the cultivation of a synergetic community embracing hope and inclusiveness. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Julia Kristeva, and Rosalind Krauss, I emphasize parallels between community and track structure, investigating interconnectedness between participants (including the DJ) within techno experiences and the interplay of samples within techno tracks. This analysis reveals tensions and dualities that shape both. This approach fills an underexplored gap within current scholarship, which commonly approaches the subject through the lenses of deviance, drug abuse, or …

Standing Between Private Parties, Thomas P. Schmidt Mar 2024

Standing Between Private Parties, Thomas P. Schmidt

Faculty Scholarship

Standing is generally framed as a doctrine about plaintiffs. The basic question, the Supreme Court has said, is “whether the plaintiff is the proper party” to invoke the federal judicial power. Asking that question tends to obscure a natural corollary: Against whom? This Article attends to the other side of the “v.” It argues that suits against private parties should be treated differently from suits against government officials for standing purposes because these two types of suits raise different structural concerns. Notwithstanding its focus on plaintiffs, the Supreme Court has said repeatedly that standing is “built” on the “single basic …

Understanding The Impact Of Trade Policy Effect Uncertainty On Firm-Level Innovation Investment: A Deep Learning Approach, Daniel Chang, Nan Hu, Peng Liang, Morgan Swink Mar 2024

Understanding The Impact Of Trade Policy Effect Uncertainty On Firm-Level Innovation Investment: A Deep Learning Approach, Daniel Chang, Nan Hu, Peng Liang, Morgan Swink

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Integrating the real options perspective and resource dependence theory, this study examines how firms adjust their innovation investments to trade policy effect uncertainty (TPEU), a less studied type of firm specific, perceived environmental uncertainty in which managers have difficulty predicting how potential policy changes will affect business operations. To develop a text-based, context-dependent, time-varying measure of firm-level perceived TPEU, we apply Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), a state-of-the-art deep learning approach. We apply BERT to analyze the texts of mandatory Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) sections of annual reports for a sample of 22,669 firm-year observations from 3,181 unique …

Leveraging Multimodal Features And Item‑Level User Feedback For Bundle Construction, Yunshan Ma, Xiaohao Liu, Yinwei Wei, Zhulin Tao, Xiang Wang, Tat‑Seng Chua Mar 2024

Leveraging Multimodal Features And Item‑Level User Feedback For Bundle Construction, Yunshan Ma, Xiaohao Liu, Yinwei Wei, Zhulin Tao, Xiang Wang, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automatic bundle construction is a crucial prerequisite step in various bundle-aware online services. Previous approaches are mostly designed to model the bundling strategy of existing bundles. However, it is hard to acquire large-scale well-curated bundle dataset, especially for those platforms that have not offered bundle services before. Even for platforms with mature bundle services, there are still many items that are included in few or even zero bundles, which give rise to sparsity and cold-start challenges in the bundle construction models. To tackle these issues, we target at leveraging multimodal features, item-level user feedback signals, and the bundle composition information, …

Revisiting The Markov Property For Machine Translation, Cunxiao Du, Hao Zhou, Zhaopeng Tu, Jing Jiang Mar 2024

Revisiting The Markov Property For Machine Translation, Cunxiao Du, Hao Zhou, Zhaopeng Tu, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we re-examine the Markov property in the context of neural machine translation. We design a Markov Autoregressive Transformer (MAT) and undertake a comprehensive assessment of its performance across four WMT benchmarks. Our findings indicate that MAT with an order larger than 4 can generate translations with quality on par with that of conventional autoregressive transformers. In addition, counter-intuitively, we also find that the advantages of utilizing a higher-order MAT do not specifically contribute to the translation of longer sentences.

Knowledge Generation For Zero-Shot Knowledge-Based Vqa, Rui Cao, Jing Jiang Mar 2024

Knowledge Generation For Zero-Shot Knowledge-Based Vqa, Rui Cao, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Previous solutions to knowledge-based visual question answering (K-VQA) retrieve knowledge from external knowledge bases and use supervised learning to train the K-VQA model. Recently pre-trained LLMs have been used as both a knowledge source and a zero-shot QA model for K-VQA and demonstrated promising results. However, these recent methods do not explicitly show the knowledge needed to answer the questions and thus lack interpretability. Inspired by recent work on knowledge generation from LLMs for text-based QA, in this work we propose and test a similar knowledge-generation-based K-VQA method, which first generates knowledge from an LLM and then incorporates the generated …
