Implicit Bias In Speech-Language Pathology: A Journey Towards Inclusive Care, Jackie Sullivan
Implicit Bias In Speech-Language Pathology: A Journey Towards Inclusive Care, Jackie Sullivan
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
To gauge implicit bias in communication sciences and disorders (CSD), the proposed study aims to understand how identity as racial/ethnic or linguistic minority affects individuals’ diagnoses with speech-language disorders. In addition, we aim to see whether clinicians’ identities as black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) or non-standard language speakers affect their biases. Prior work has shown that clinicians' explicit racial biases affect patient care, matching expectations, but little work has examined bias of language variety spoken by patients or clinicians’ implicit biases. Many institutions fail to mandate cultural competency training, contributing to systemic issues. Our planned research explores and …

Is Done perfect?
African American English (AAE) is a distinct, though frequently stigmatized, variety of American English. Historically described as a “vernacular” (and frequently still is to this day) many of the systematic rules that govern the dialect have been glossed over or sporadically described. One such structure is preverbal done, seen in constructions such as “But then I think they done cremate her.”. Previous authors (Green 1993, Edwards 2001, Terry 2010 and Scott 2016) have described this construction as a present perfect, parallelling standard English’s construction using have. More recently, Harris 2019 describes the construction as a …
It Ain’T Necessarily So: Ludwig Boltzmann’S Darwinian Notion Of Entropy, Steven Gimbel
It Ain’T Necessarily So: Ludwig Boltzmann’S Darwinian Notion Of Entropy, Steven Gimbel
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Ludwig Boltzmann's move in his seminal paper of 1877, introducing a statistical understanding of entropy, was a watershed moment in the history of physics. The work not only introduced quantization and provided a new understanding of entropy, it challenged the understanding of what a law of nature could be. Traditionally, nomological necessity, that is, specifying the way in which a system must develop, was considered an essential element of proposed physical laws. Yet, here was a new understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics that no longer possessed this property. While it was a new direction in physics, in other …

“I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free”: A Lamentation On Dobbs V. Jackson’S Pernicious Impact On The Lives And Liberty Of Women, April L. Cherry
Cleveland State Law Review
On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned nearly fifty years of precedent when it declared in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that abortion was not a fundamental right, and therefore it was not protected by the Fourteenth Amendment and substantive due process. In law school corridors and legal scholar circles, discussion of the Court’s evisceration of abortion rights focused on the corresponding changes in Fourteenth Amendment jurisprudence and the Court’s outright dismissal of stare decisis. But in homes, hospitals, community centers, and workplaces, different conversations were happening. Conversations, mostly had by women, concerned the real-life consequences of overturning …

“It’S Always An Admixture Of So Many Identities”: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of Indigenous Kalasha Cultural Identity, Fahad Riaz Choudhry Dr, Karen Jennifer Golden, Miriam Sang-Ah Park
The Qualitative Report
This case study examined how an Indigenous Kalasha participant in northern Pakistan makes sense of his multi-faceted identity. The interpretative phenomenological analysis method was used to analyze data from an in-depth, single person case study. Our selected participant was a 36-year-old male postgraduate student from an Indigenous marginalized tribe, which is an ethnic and religious minority group in the northern Hindukush mountain region of Pakistan. Results are presented in four superordinate themes: (1) Identity: admixture of a number of identities, (2) Changing culture and its psychological impact, (3) Cultural protective factors against psychological problems and (4) Mental health perspective. …

Women's Reproductive Health: A Critical Appraisal Of Reproductive Justice And Magisterial Contributions To Responsible Family Planning, Kelly Olson
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
History reveals the degrading and traumatizing experiences of marginalized women harmed by unethical reproductive healthcare practices. Progress has been made; however divisive barriers still prohibit dialogue from resulting in a dignified approach to legislation that serves the diverse population of women in diverse situations of lived reality. Enhancing the theological dialogue with updated awareness of women’s reproductive healthcare needs and a renewed conversation of the benefit of expressed human sexuality in heterosexual marriage allows opportunity for the Magisterium to enhance teaching that aligns with Catholic tradition and grows with human understanding, in the spirit of aggiornamento. Improved clarity and wider …

BACKGROUND: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) diagnostic criteria underestimate the complex presentation of semantic (sv) and logopenic (lv) variants, in which symptoms partially overlap, and mixed clinical presentation (mixed-PPA) and heterogenous profile (lvPPA +) are frequent. Conceptualization of similarities and differences of these clinical conditions is still scarce.
METHODS: Lexical, semantic, phonological, and working memory errors from nine language tasks of sixty-seven PPA were analyzed using Profile Analysis based on Multidimensional Scaling, which allowed us to create a distributed representation of patients' linguistic performance in a shared space. Patients had been studied with [
RESULTS: Patients' profiles were distributed across a …

Using Eye-Tracking To Examine How Chinese Foreign Language Learners Attend To Chinese Radicals, Yi Hsuan Lin
Theses and Dissertations
This study utilized eye-tracking to investigate 63 intermediate-level university Chinese foreign language (CFL) learners' real-time radical preferences. Radicals are components of Chinese characters and give clues to the meanings and pronunciations of the character. This study aimed to answer the following research questions: (1) What type of radicals (semantic/phonetic) do CFL readers most rely on when reading characters? (2) Does reliance on one type of radical (semantic/phonetic) correlate with accuracy in character recognition? (3) Does awareness of semantic/phonetic radicals affect the accuracy of character recognition or reliance on radicals in real-time processing? The results found that participants demonstrated a phonetic …

. The REO (re-entry option) Program was created in response to an overwhelming need to address severe disciplinary referral patterns and the disproportionate impact on students of color. It is rare that the underlying issue that may have precipitated the undesirable behavior is considered, and even rarer that a referral to clinical staff is the response. In the REO program is an intervention designed to be initiated by a teacher who recognizes or experiences a student in pre-crisis or a student a student who believes they need to a safe place to self-regulate to prevent escalating behavior. A Review Of The Beginnings Of ‘Metamodernism’ In Relation To Other Movements: Are We Ready?, Alla Al Omari, Noor Awawdeh
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
Postmodernism is giving way to its last breath and critical theory has several alternatives to delve into. One of the interesting theories that has a promising future to take the critical scene is metamodernism. The study aimed to give a brief introduction about metamodernism in terms of beginnings and its relation to other movements of the same period. Since metamodernism is not the only critical theory that examines cultural attitudes, we are supposed to ask whether it is distinct from other theories or whether it is comprehensive and accurately captures the spirit of the era. These two become the main …

Many scholars believe that the eloquent text is that text that surprises the reader, with amazing linguistic aesthetics, as it departs from the usual expected, and reaches the surprising, eye-catching and heartfelt, since its first hearing.
The scholars acknowledge that the Holy Qur’an is the most informative text, in terms of its language, syntax, morphology, and rhetoric, and in terms of the word’s harmony with what precedes it and what comes after it, and this gives it a special impact that is remarkable for the sensitive listener in terms of its grammatical and morphological compatibility, and its gentle rhythm on …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Creating Sun Tsu: Instituting A Master’S Degree In Irregular Warfare, Robert Burrell, John Collision
GNSI Decision Briefs
In the words of Sun Tsu, arguably the father of irregular warfare, war is like water, and water has no constant form, and there are no constant conditions in war.i Nowhere in the history of U.S. military doctrine has conflict been described in this theoretical and inclusive way. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the U.S.’s preference for technological solutions, increased firepower, and lethality on the battlefield neglects to account for leveraging irregular and asymmetric forms of conflict to advance its interests and counter its adversaries. The Consortium to Study Irregular Warfare Act of 2021 addressed the gap …

The Religious Significance Of Bees And Beehives In Egyptian, Israelite, And Latter-Day Saint Traditions, Anita Cramer
The Religious Significance Of Bees And Beehives In Egyptian, Israelite, And Latter-Day Saint Traditions, Anita Cramer
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
The bee and beehive have been pervasive symbols in many ancient societies and religions. This iconography continues in the modern world, as Latter-day Saint beehives clearly testify. From Brigham Young University letterhead, to Utah highway signs, to the Salt Lake Temple doors, the state of Deseret continues to flaunt its mascot Yet few realize the profound symbolism, such as royalty and rebirth, associated with the bee. Examining the ancient Egyptian and Israelite usage of bees in a religious context, therefore, is intriguing, and provides insight into why Latter-day Saint pioneers chose to identify with the beehive and its inhabitants. Pharaonic …
