A Comparison Of Public, Private, And Charter Educator Beliefs About Autistic Students Abilities, Jodene Ruth Jensen Mar 2024

A Comparison Of Public, Private, And Charter Educator Beliefs About Autistic Students Abilities, Jodene Ruth Jensen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

With the incidence of autism on the rise, it is imperative to identify factors that contribute to education. Despite the accessibility and low cost of public institutions, many parents choose to educate their autistic children in private and charter school settings. This study examined the difference in beliefs among public, private, and charter school educators toward the abilities of autistic students. Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory guided this study. Through a mixed-methods approach, surveys were employed to special educators within the Walden Participant and Survey Monkey Pools. There was a total of 209 survey respondents. Surveys were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis …

Perceptions Of School Leaders On Inclusion And Their Role In The Successful Development Of An Inclusion Program For Preschoolers With Disabilities, Cheryl A. Myrie

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is the administrative law that governs special education services and how students with disabilities should be educated. When students are found eligible for special education and related services, the law states that the general education classroom should be the first placement considered where students receive services. Research reveals that the state of New Jersey has traditionally been a state where students with disabilities are educated in separate classrooms and schools, and in 2021 the state was ranked the worst in the United States when it came to including students with disabilities in the general …

An Apalachee Revolt?: Reconceptualizing Violence In Seventeenth-Century Apalachee, Aubrey Lauersdorf Mar 2024

An Apalachee Revolt?: Reconceptualizing Violence In Seventeenth-Century Apalachee, Aubrey Lauersdorf

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1647, a group of Apalachee diplomats arrived at an Apalachee town somewhere between the Ochlockonee and Aucilla rivers in the present--day Florida panhandle. The diplomats, representing communities across Apalachee territory, settled in the town's council house where their hosts welcomed, fed, and lodged them. Soon the Apalachees were joined by Chisca delegates, representatives of a people who had relocated near Apalachee territory from present-day Tennessee. Bands of Chiscas had recently entered Apalachee territory to raid Apalachee towns. Now they met for peace negotiations. The Apalachee delegates present at this meeting saw promise in a friendship with their erstwhile enemies.

Charting A Path Toward An Indigenous History Of Florida, Denise I. Bossy Mar 2024

Charting A Path Toward An Indigenous History Of Florida, Denise I. Bossy

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1743, with the naive belief that the Calusas were finally interested in Catholic conversion, two Jesuit missionaries traveled to South Florida from Havana, Cuba. For decades Europeans described the region-in documents and on maps-as all but devoid of human life and, in particular, its Indigenous populations as being virtually extinct. Instead, the Jesuits discovered that South Florida was very much still under Indigenous control. A number of distinct Native confederacies-including one that consisted of Calusas, Bocarratons, and "Key" Indians and another of what one Spaniard called Maymies, Santaluzos, and Mayacas-exerted not only territorial control but also control over the …

Reclaiming The Symbol: Ethics, Rhetoric, And The Humanistic Integration Of Gai - A Burkean Perspective, Daniel Plate, James Hutson Mar 2024

Reclaiming The Symbol: Ethics, Rhetoric, And The Humanistic Integration Of Gai - A Burkean Perspective, Daniel Plate, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This study delves into the intersection of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and the Humanities, guided by the critical insights of Kenneth Burke, a seminal figure in the study of rhetoric and a vocal critic of scientism and positivism. The skepticism of the American literary theorist towards an uncritical embrace of science and technology, and his concerns over the inclination of the Humanities to adopt scientific methodologies at the expense of traditional forms of inquiry, provide a critical framework for examining the new role played by GAI within the Humanities. By framing these tools in the context of Burkean rhetorical theory, …

Pal-Bert: An Improved Question Answering Model, Wenfeng Zheng, Siyu Lu, Zhuohang Cai, Ruiyang Wang, Lei Wang, Lirong Yin

Faculty Publications

In the field of natural language processing (NLP), there have been various pre-training language models in recent years, with question answering systems gaining significant attention. However, as algorithms, data, and computing power advance, the issue of increasingly larger models and a growing number of parameters has surfaced. Consequently, model training has become more costly and less efficient. To enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the training process while reducing the model volume, this paper proposes a first-order pruning model PAL-BERT based on the ALBERT model according to the characteristics of question-answering (QA) system and language model. Firstly, a first-order network …

The Role Of Evidence-Based Practice In The Decision-Making Processes Of School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists, James Farley Mar 2024

The Role Of Evidence-Based Practice In The Decision-Making Processes Of School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists, James Farley

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) encourages speech- language pathologists (SLPs) to implement evidence-based practice (EBP) in clinical decision- making processes. Through the utilization of EBP, SLPs increase their ability to make informed decisions and recommendations for treatment. Despite ASHA’s position that EBP is necessary to ensure the provision of high-quality care, there is conflicting evidence as to how consistently SLPs in public middle schools implement it. The purpose of this study was to explore the degree to which middle school-based SLPs use EBP for determining student eligibility for speech- language services and in their decision-making processes. For this qualitative study, …

The Philosophy Of Political Ethics - A Study In The Concept, Linguistic, And Idiomatic Connotations, Osama Zain Al Abideen

The World Research of Political Science Journal

Ethics is a word that has multiple connotations, some of which are related to individual behavior. Others are related to social behavior,There are many definitions of the term ethics; the linguistic significance of these definitions confirmed that morals are natural, innate qualities inherent in the human soul. The conventional meaning of morals has two forms of life, the good life and the other life opposite it, which is the life of evil in all its colors, shapes, and documents. Ethics constituted the central axis of Islam and other divine messages. Likewise, the philosophers of the ideal school in the Greek …

The Reflection Of The Far-Right Rise On French Foreign Policy, Ghada Gamal, Mohamed Nour Al-Bosrati

The World Research of Political Science Journal

The presence of far-right parties in the French political system is not a new or temporary phenomenon, as its roots date back to the nineteenth century and re-emerged in 1953 with the emergence of the Boujad movement, as these parties continued to rise and played a significant role in the political arena internally and externally through the success rates in the legislative, local and European elections, this reflects the crisis of many issues in France. The continued rise of these parties now represents a crisis for the current French regime because it is adopting political counter-programs, particularly regarding the refugee …

The Myth Of Tightening Credit Rating Standards In The Market For Corporate Debt, Karolina Krystyniak, Viktoriya Staneva Mar 2024

The Myth Of Tightening Credit Rating Standards In The Market For Corporate Debt, Karolina Krystyniak, Viktoriya Staneva

Faculty Publications

This study revisits the existing evidence of a downward trend in credit rating standards indicating that CRAs have become more conservative over time. We find that the time-series variation in the proxy for rating standards is mostly driven by the market-based variables in the model, specifically market capitalization and idiosyncratic volatility. We examine an alternative specification of the model, incorporating risk characteristics of rated firms relative to those of the average firm in the economy, and find it to have a higher explanatory power. Most importantly, we find little evidence of increased conservatism over time, in contrast to prior studies.

Are They All Textualists Now?, Austin Peters Mar 2024

Are They All Textualists Now?, Austin Peters

Northwestern University Law Review

Recent developments at the U.S. Supreme Court have rekindled debates over textualism. Missing from the conversation is a discussion of the courts that decide the vast majority of statutory interpretation cases in the United States—state courts. This Article uses supervised machine learning to conduct the first-ever empirical study of the statutory interpretation methods used by state supreme courts. In total, this study analyzes over 44,000 opinions from all fifty states from 1980 to 2019.

This Article establishes several key descriptive findings. First, since the 1980s, textualism has risen rapidly in state supreme court opinions. Second, this rise is primarily attributable …

Consociational Democracy In Israel, Nirmolika Sangha Mar 2024

Consociational Democracy In Israel, Nirmolika Sangha

The World Research of Political Science Journal

Formed as a result of the Zionist movement, which emerged from anti-Semitism across Europe, Israel was envisioned as a state for Jews. However, the founders of Israel also saw it as a state where non-Jews would be equal citizens. Contrary to this vision, the Israeli state today has evolved into one that has marginalised and discriminated against its Palestinian Arab citizens. The emphasis of the state in maintaining its Jewish character has deepened divisions between the two communities and has alienated the Arab community in Israel. Arabs make up 21 per cent of Israel’s population as of 2019 but have …

India–Usa Geo-Economic Convergence: A Transition From Economic Illiberalism To Economic Diplomacy, Sweta Basu

The World Research of Political Science Journal

The economic bilateral ties between India and the United States of America (USA) have taken a new-fangled semblance over the past few years with a renewed vigor of geo-economic convergence, as the foundation for establishing a new normal in the bilateral relationship. Following the collapse of the erstwhile Soviet Union, India faced a lot of economic crises with the United States (US) that challenged the prevailing liberal economic integration. Post the Indo-US Nuclear Deal, economic considerations became a topmost priority where the US and India aimed for sustaining a high rate of economic growth which became a watershed moment for …

The Indian Political Paradigms Across Traditional Divides: An Evaluation, Rajkumar Singh

The World Research of Political Science Journal

The political change that took place in 1947 began to move with the existing social structure on the basis of give and take. The new institutions and the new leadership offered economic opportunity, administrative patronage, and positions of power which drew the articulate sections of society into the modernist network. Even at this stage the caste associations and federation had the less pressing role and the upper tiers of each of the rival chains were recruited into politics and carried the whole network with them. It increased the importance of individuals and leadership took on a more positive note. But …

Interactions Between Soil Mineral Composition And Particulate Organic Matter Mediate Bioavailable Nitrogen, Andrea Jilling, Marian Carrell, A Stuart Grandy, Rachel Hestrin, Marco Keiluweit, Erik Knatvold, Andrew Whitaker

Faculty Publications

Soil organic matter (SOM) can supply critical quantities of nitrogen (N) to plants, but fundamental questions remain regarding from what pools and by which processes plants and microbes obtain N. The source of bioavailable N is generally assigned to polymeric or particulate organic matter (POM), but in mineral soils, POM is often a minor pool of N and can be a poor predictor of bioavailable N or plant N uptake. Mounting evidence suggests mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) is significantly more dynamic than previously assumed and may serve as an important source of N for plants and microbes. The abundance and …

Is Circle Time Enough Language Input To Learn Grammatical Gender?, Madeline Grace Strah

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

In the United States, little is known about second language learning in the context of public preschools. However, we do know that dual immersion programs have for the most part been limited to private or charter schools, with fewer than 3600 programs available nationwide. This raises the question of whether it’s even possible for public educators to facilitate second language learning through small group activities. Additionally, is the language input received during this small group enough language input for children to acquire a feature absent from their first language, like grammatical and lexical gender? Research has shown that opportunities where …

Style: A Sociolinguistic Analysis, Clarise Ann Sviatko

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Continuously changing and always present, style appears in an individual’s life in more ways than one. Along with the clothes you wear and the way you do your hair, style is seen all throughout language every day. The way someone speaks to one person may differ from the way they speak to another. The environment a speaker is in may also influence how they speak. The way we speak to our close friends in private differs from the way we speak to others in more formal and professional settings. We choose the way we speak depending on who is around …
