Llm-Based Natural Conversational Agent With Speech Collision Detection For Early Prompt Abort, D Shin
Llm-Based Natural Conversational Agent With Speech Collision Detection For Early Prompt Abort, D Shin
Defensive Publications Series
Virtual assistants, chatbots, and other natural language conversational agents enable users to provide spoken or text queries in a natural manner and receive responses. Such conversational agents can utilize large language models (LLMs) as a backend mechanism for query interpretation and response generation. When a user pauses or otherwise interrupts the query input, or modifies query input, the LLM may generate and provide a response to the original query rather than the user’s intended query. This disclosure describes techniques that enable on the fly query interpretation and updates to response generation when a user in conversation with a conversational agent …

The Experiences Of A Black Teacher Educator Surrounded By Whiteness In Teacher Education: A Critical Autoethnography, Lamicah Lindsey
The Experiences Of A Black Teacher Educator Surrounded By Whiteness In Teacher Education: A Critical Autoethnography, Lamicah Lindsey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The field of teacher education is dominated by whiteness, perpetuating the influence of white ideologies in designing and implementing teacher education at each phase of the continuum (pre-service teaching, in-service teaching, teacher educators). This study employs a critical autoethnographic approach to examine how my experiences as a Black educator have shaped my social justice pedagogy across the teacher education continuum. It also identifies the supports I received during my journey. The findings reveal persistent racial discrimination throughout all phases of teacher education, as well as struggles with imposter syndrome, self-doubt, racial identity, and fear of the unknown. These findings underscore …

Chapter 17. Spoken Discourse And Second Language Research, Midori Ishida
Chapter 17. Spoken Discourse And Second Language Research, Midori Ishida
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Spoken discourse is the primordial means by which humans engage in social life and it has been studied from an array of approaches with their own ontological and epistemological orientations to language and communication. The present chapter surveys two primary strands of research on spoken discourse involving second language speakers: (1) studies that approach discourse as a means of revealing second language speakers’ competences and their developmental trajectories, and (2) those that approach discourse as a site for second language learning. The views of competences have gone through diversification, from a focus on discourse competence for creating cohesive monologic text …

Street Art And A New Space Of Democracy In Post-Soeharto Indonesia: Reading Anti-Tank Project Posters, Ali Minanto
JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
This article deals with the intertwine between street art and the practice of democracy in post-Soeharto Indonesia. It attempts to investigate the role of street art in the contemporary political landscape of Indonesia, especially two decades after the reformasi (reformation) movement. Reformasi, which was marked by the collapse of the New Order regime in 1998, is regarded as a turning point in Indonesia's democracy after 32 years of authoritarian government. Street art took a crucial part in that historic moment as a medium of protest. This study shows cases of the Anti-Tank Project, one of Yogyakarta’s street artists, posters with …

Language comprehension is often affected in individuals with post-stroke aphasia. However, deficits in auditory comprehension are not fully correlated with deficits in reading comprehension and the mechanisms underlying this dissociation remain unclear. This distinction is important for understanding language mechanisms, predicting long-term impairments and future development of treatment interventions. Using comprehensive auditory and reading measures from a large cohort of individuals with aphasia, we evaluated the relationship between aphasia type and reading comprehension impairments, the relationship between auditory versus reading comprehension deficits and the crucial neuroanatomy supporting the dissociation between post-stroke reading and auditory deficits. Scores from the Western Aphasia …

Epistemic Modality And Evidentiality In Ernest Hemingway's The Snows Of Kilimanjaro, Salih Mahdi Adai, Zamaan Tawfeeq Abdul-Hassan
Uruk Journal of Human Sciences
Epistemic modality refers to the use of modality which is based on the speaker's evaluation and judgment in relation to the degree of confidence of the knowledge on the proposition. In the current study, Willett's (1988) taxonomy of Epistemic Modality and Evidentiality is applied to Ernest Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro. The study shows how the characters, in this short story, express their knowledge about the world around them. Speakers often make judgments based on perceptual, reported, or inferred evidences, thus the relationship between epistemicity and evidentiality is often close and difficult to demarcate. However, while epistemicity involves the speaker’s …

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMTs) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery by connecting medical devices and applications to healthcare IT systems via the internet. This connectivity enables the collection, transmission, and analysis of patient data, facilitating remote healthcare delivery and enhancing patient outcomes. However, the security and privacy of the data transmitted and stored within IoMT systems remain critical concerns. Blockchain technology offers a promising solution to address these challenges in IoMTs applications. Blockchain provides a decentralized and immutable ledger where transactions, in this case, patient data, are securely recorded and cannot be altered retroactively. This ensures the …

The Breakbeat Poets: Translocal Placemaking In The Contemporary Midwestern Lyric, Andy Oler
Publications
In the introduction to the Haymarket Books collection The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (2015), co-editor Kevin Coval asserts that the anthologized poems are not simply influenced by hip-hop; “these poems are hip-hop.”1 The anthology’s focus on a genre, a cultural phenomenon, might seem like an odd fit for a special issue on placemaking. Its national frame might seem too expansive for the study of regionalism (though there is a history, established by James Shortridge, of conflating the Midwest with the nation).2 But The BreakBeat Poets is also attentive to more precise versions …

Two Imagined Chinas In Tel Quel, Wang Yichen
Two Imagined Chinas In Tel Quel, Wang Yichen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
From the mid-1960s, the literary review Tel Quel shifted its anti-traditional and avant-garde stance in arts and literature toward politics within the radical political context in France. Its editor Philippe Sollers initiated a “political turn,” marked by its transformation from its “structuralist period” to its “China period.” Its “China period” inadvertently created a “textual spectacle” of two imagined Chinas: first, a poetic, static “ancient China” represented by Daoism (Taoism), Chinese ideograms, and classical Chinese art and poetry; and second, a revolutionary, subversive “modern China” represented by Maoism along with Lu Xun and other left-wing writers. Taking appropriation, rather than misreading, …
French Left-Wing Literary Theory And Mao Zedong Thought, Han Zhenjiang, Zhang Yuling
French Left-Wing Literary Theory And Mao Zedong Thought, Han Zhenjiang, Zhang Yuling
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
French left-wing literary theories have continued to accept and interpret Mao Zedong’s thought (including his theories on literature and art) from the 1960s to today. This intellectual communication enabled the formation of Louis Althusser’s structural Marxism and contemporary left-wing literary theory. Mao’s theory of contradiction and his thoughts on reliance on the popular masses, aesthetics and politics, and people’s literature and art are the major intellectual resources for Louis Althusser’s, Alain Badiou’s, and Slavoj Žižek’s theories and are fully integrated into their theoretical system and critical practice. Althusser, Badiou, and Žižek innovated materialistic dialectics on the basis of Mao’s theory …
Chinese Modern Leftist Affect And Aesthetic-Affective Modernity In The Global Affective Turn, Yan Fang
Chinese Modern Leftist Affect And Aesthetic-Affective Modernity In The Global Affective Turn, Yan Fang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Influenced by China’s distinctive “qing” tradition, ranging from the “affective Enlightenment” to the sentimental/affective revolution, both China’s modern Enlightenment movement and the Chinese leftists’ endeavors for social transformation and revolution heavily relied on the emotions and affect, especially those within literature, art, and aesthetics. The dyna mics of “moods” proposed by Qu Qiubai, the “national form” movement, and the Maoist affect not only foreshadowed and actualized but also enriched the conceptualizations of feelings, emotions, and affect by Western theorists such as Gramsci, Raymond Williams, Gilles Deleuze, and Jacques Rancière. With its meticulous portrayal and innovative theorization of the …
The Many Afterlives Of Orientalism: Translation, Reception, And Appropriation Of Saidian Theory In China, Wu You
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
During the mass translation of Western “post-isms” since the 1990s, Saidian postcolonial theory, Orientalism in particular, was introduced to China through interpretation, reception, and appropriation in the Chinese academe, becoming an important discursive tool for the debate about China. The translated work is perceived as the “afterlife” of the original work, and Saidian theory achieves its constantly renewed and comprehensive unfolding through translation and critical reception in China. In this sense, translation contributes to the complexity and multiplicity of traveling theories, which plays an important part in the formation of Chinese literary theories. Arguably, theoretical transformation occurs through debates and …
The Making Of Chinese Meixue, Li Qingben, Wang Gang
The Making Of Chinese Meixue, Li Qingben, Wang Gang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In “The Making of Chinese Meixue,” Li and Wang discuss the Chinese translation of the term “aesthetics.” It had been believed that it was the German missionary Ernst Faber who first coined the Chinese term “meixue,” which is refuted in this paper. The view that the term “shenmeixue” in Japan was derived from Wilhelm Lobscheid’s English and Chinese Dictionary also lacks factual basis. It is true that the term “meixue” was introduced to China from the West via Japan, but it was then a term that had not yet developed within a specific …

Overcoming Bias In Standardized Testing, Paul Riebe
Overcoming Bias In Standardized Testing, Paul Riebe
Masters Projects
The current state of education is one where student and teacher’s futures are dictated by the outcomes of standardized tests, which are inherently biased against students of color. The purpose of this project is to examine the bias in these tests to determine what exactly these biases are, and train teachers to better prepare their students to overcome these biases. For this project, I chose literature that examined the biases found in standardized testing through a number of different topics such as the effect on teacher attrition, the bias found in standardized testing, educational inequity and the meaning of intelligence. …

Forgotten Learners: An Examination Of The Experiences Of English Language Learners In Advanced Placement And International Baccalaureate Social Studies Courses, Elizabeth Rasmussen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The number of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States is rapidly increasing, particularly in high schools. Although the number of ELLs is growing at a fast pace in the United States, the number of ELLs enrolled in advanced educational programming has not increased. After an in-depth review of the extant literature, it is evident that limited scholarly research on ELLs in advanced coursework exists. This is especially true in AP and IB social studies courses, where in many states where “Open Access” and “AP for All” have been adopted. This qualitative study sought to reveal the lived experiences …

The purpose of this descriptive correlational quantitative study was to examine contributing factors of students and teachers affecting teacher self-efficacy and students' reading achievement in rural Oklahoma elementary schools in grades first through fifth. The contributing factors of students being analyzed included (a) poverty and (b) race or ethnic backgrounds. The teachers’ contributing factors include their self-efficacy levels on students' reading achievement, instructional strategies, classroom management, and student engagement levels. The proposed theory was that student and teacher variables beyond their control influenced teachers' self-efficacy levels in poverty-stricken classrooms. The study employed a quantitative approach, which used an online questionnaire …

A Case Study Of Backward Design In A Customized Business English Course For Global Supply Chain Vendors In Francophone Africa, Steven J. Sacco
Global Advances in Business Communication
The present article describes a case study in which the author used domain analysis to create a backward-designed remedial listening comprehension course for global supply chain vendors employed with logistics-focused multinational corporations operating in Francophone Africa. The course is designed to address weaknesses in listening comprehension skills as exhibited by global supply chain vendors in Francophone Africa who work daily with South Asian customers. The weaknesses emanate, in large part, from the existence of World Englishes due to the rise of English as a lingua franca by multinational corporations. World Englishes refers to the existence of “emerging localized or indigenized …

Preserving Linguistic Diversity In The Digital Age: A Scalable Model For Cultural Heritage Continuity, James Hutson, Pace Ellsworth, Matt Ellsworth
Preserving Linguistic Diversity In The Digital Age: A Scalable Model For Cultural Heritage Continuity, James Hutson, Pace Ellsworth, Matt Ellsworth
Faculty Scholarship
In the face of the rapid erosion of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage globally, the urgency for effective, wide-ranging preservation methods has never been greater. Traditional approaches in cultural preservation often focus narrowly on specific niches, overlooking the broader cultural tapestry, particularly the preservation of everyday cultural elements. This article addresses this critical gap by advocating for a comprehensive, scalable model for cultural preservation that leverages machine learning and big data analytics. This model aims to document and archive a diverse range of cultural artifacts, encompassing both extraordinary and mundane aspects of heritage. A central issue highlighted in the …

The Effect Of Teacher Identity On The Level Of Cultural Inclusion In The Classroom, Jennifer Jones
Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenographical study was to investigate high school teachers’ perceptions of cultural inclusion and the impact of teacher identity on the level of cultural inclusion in the classroom. This research study utilized semi-structured one-on-one interviews as the primary source of data and participant surveys and researcher notes taken during the interviews as the secondary sources. This study sought to address two research questions: (1) What can we learn from teachers' experiences at a southeastern suburban high school regarding the post-COVID perceptions of cultural inclusion in the classroom? (2) How does teacher identity affect cultural inclusion in …
