Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Using critical race theory and Gloria Ladson-Billings' culturally relevant pedagogy as theoretical frameworks, this thematic narrative analysis study explored the epistemology and ontology of culturally relevant pedagogy by investigating the research question: How do Black novice teachers (years 1-5) become culturally relevant practitioners? The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with Black K-12 public school teachers in which the participants reflected on how their upbringing, cultural identities, K-12 experiences, and teacher preparation program/process impacts their readiness to practice culturally relevant pedagogy. Five themes emerged from the narrative analysis: 1) K-12 racialized trauma; 2) racialized awakening and awareness; 3) the sanctuary of …

Discourse- And Lesion-Based Aphasia Quotient Estimation Using Machine Learning, Nicholas Riccardi, Satvik Nelakuditi, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Chris Rorden, Julius Fridriksson, Rutvik H. Desai Apr 2024

Discourse- And Lesion-Based Aphasia Quotient Estimation Using Machine Learning, Nicholas Riccardi, Satvik Nelakuditi, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Chris Rorden, Julius Fridriksson, Rutvik H. Desai

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Discourse is a fundamentally important aspect of communication, and discourse production provides a wealth of information about linguistic ability. Aphasia commonly affects, in multiple ways, the ability to produce discourse. Comprehensive aphasia assessments such as the Western Aphasia Battery-Revised (WAB-R) are time- and resource-intensive. We examined whether discourse measures can be used to estimate WAB-R Aphasia Quotient (AQ), and whether this can serve as an ecologically valid, less resource-intensive measure. We used features extracted from discourse tasks using three AphasiaBank prompts involving expositional (picture description), story narrative, and procedural discourse. These features were used to train a machine learning model …

Who’S Laughing Now? Comedy As Coping Mechanism And Critique In Paul Beatty’S The Sellout, Mihaughany Redd

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper examines the ways in which Paul Beatty uses dark humor as a coping mechanism for racial trauma, as well as a way of critiquing society’s treatment of Black people in his novel, The Sellout. Throughout his novel, Beatty discusses various controversial topics such as police brutality, segregation, and slavery. Although these topics are not lighthearted in any sense, Beatty uses satire and comedy to describe them to the reader. This paper seeks to elucidate why Beatty would use comedy to discuss the racial injustices and inequalities that Black people have faced in the past and in the …

Choosing Optimal Supply Radius Of Transformer Substations (Tss) In Iraq’S Cities Using Geometric Programming With Neutrosophic Coefficients, Ahmed K. Essa, Montifort Blessings Andrew Mitungwi, Tuweh Prince Gadama, Ahmed A. Salama

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Numerous uncertainties exist in various electricity power system problems due to the size, complexity, geographical distribution, and influence of unforeseen events in these systems, making it difficult for traditional mathematics tools based on crisp set theory to have an impact on and solve many power system problems. As a new branch of mathematical uncertainty techniques, the neutrosophic expert systems approach has therefore emerged with the development of electric power systems and has proven successful when correctly linked. The expert typically uses ambiguous or neutrosophic language to describe their empirical knowledge, such as "very likely," "quite likely," "if x is large, …

The Sacred And The Supernatural: Christianity And Teutonic Folklore In The Grimms’ Briar Rose, Amelia Stefanescu

Honors Theses

During the nineteenth century, the Brothers Grimm undertook the task of preserving German folklore during a time of cultural upheaval and struggle for national identity. One such tale, Briar Rose, emerges as a site of ideological interplay between Christian themes and Teutonic traditions. By analyzing the Grimms’ 1812 (first) and 1857 (last) editions, this thesis investigates how the text reflects and synthesizes these distinct belief systems into a coherent narrative.

The research explores how Christian and pagan elements co-exist within Briar Rose and what these interactions reveal about the cultural and religious dynamics within the folktale. The study argues that …

Starting Small Or Big: An Artificial Language Paradigm, Rachel Evans Apr 2024

Starting Small Or Big: An Artificial Language Paradigm, Rachel Evans

LSU Master's Theses

Previous research on language acquisition has raised two competing hypotheses: Starting Small and Starting Big. Starting Small states that limitations (small working memory capacity, simple structure, short string length, etc.) are beneficial for language learning, which explains why children are able to acquire language more easily than adults. Starting Big proposes the opposite, that input of chunks of language rather than individual units creates a stronger and more fluid understanding of grammatical relations between words. The current study aimed to investigate these theories in the context of an artificial language paradigm using a forced-choice task, a production task, a working …

Personalized Llm Response Generation With Parameterized Memory Injection Apr 2024

Personalized Llm Response Generation With Parameterized Memory Injection

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Large Language Models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable proficiency in comprehending and generating natural language. On the other hand, personalized LLM response generation holds the potential to offer substantial benefits for individuals in critical areas such as medical. Existing research has explored memory-augmented methods to prompt the LLM with pre-stored user-specific knowledge for personalized response generation in terms of new queries. We contend that such paradigm is unable to perceive fine-granularity information. In this study, we propose a novel \textbf{M}emory-\textbf{i}njected approach using parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) and along with a Bayesian Optimisation searching strategy to achieve \textbf{L}LM \textbf{P}ersonalization(\textbf{MiLP}).

Metabolic Potentation Of Antibiotic Lethality From Carbon Source Preference In P. Aeruginosa And S. Aureus, Pooja Parikh, Trent Moudler

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing public health concern with a dire need for new solutions. This problem has only been exacerbated in recent years due to the misuse of antibiotics and globalization. As new antibiotic drugs are costly and time-intensive, it is imperative to understand and study creative new ways to combat AMR. In both natural ecosystems and clinical infections, microorganisms seldom exist in isolation. Rather, they flourish within polymicrobial communities, presenting unique challenges for therapeutic interventions owing to elaborate inter-species interactions. Two such pathogens are Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA); bacteria commonly found in patients with …
