Grafting Philosophy To The Tagalog Prefix Ka, Rainier A. Ibana Dec 2024

Grafting Philosophy To The Tagalog Prefix Ka, Rainier A. Ibana

Kritika Kultura

This paper presents Filipino language as a tool in capturing the Filipino world view. By examining the Tagalog prefix “ka” as an accommodation of differences and opposition, this paper shows the infinite depth and breadth of Filipino’s capacity to absorb various kinds and levels of solidarity. This also analyzes the development of Filipino society by the way the prefix “ka” was used especially during the Philippine Revolution and its present-day significance.

"Pedagogic Invasion": The Thomasites In Occupied Philippines, Dinah Roma-Sianturi Dec 2024

"Pedagogic Invasion": The Thomasites In Occupied Philippines, Dinah Roma-Sianturi

Kritika Kultura

The early education of the Philippines by American voluntary teachers (the Thomasites) is often hailed as a laudatory project. However, education can be a deceptive gift. The ethnographic writings of the Thomasite teachers, like Mary Fee’s A Woman’s Impressions of the Philippines, reveal that these well-meaning American teachers had their own colonial opinion of their Filipino students. Perhaps unwittingly, the Thomasite teachers were still part of the American colonial education policy. Most especially, the memoir writings reveal a perception of Filipino males as effeminate and childlike, an opinion that did much to legitimize the American colonial mandate.

French Inscriptions In The Latin Kingdom Of Jerusalem: From The Written Word To The Museum, Estelle Ingrand-Varenne Dec 2024

French Inscriptions In The Latin Kingdom Of Jerusalem: From The Written Word To The Museum, Estelle Ingrand-Varenne

'Atiqot

Epigraphic transition to writing in the vernacular languages was one of the most striking phenomena in the sociocultural history of medieval Europe from the twelfth century onward, affecting all domains of written culture and progressing at different paces in different places. This transition took place in the Crusader states, as in France, in the mid-thirteenth century, but here with a radical turn from medieval Latin to Outremer French—an Old French dialect used in the Latin East. This paper examines isolated French words (names) in the extant inscriptions from the Kingdom of Jerusalem, tracing the transitional stages and identifying the actors …

A Greek Inscribed Early Islamic-Period Oil Lamp From Jerusalem, Leah Di Segni, Benyamin Storchan, Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah Dec 2024

A Greek Inscribed Early Islamic-Period Oil Lamp From Jerusalem, Leah Di Segni, Benyamin Storchan, Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah

'Atiqot

A unique mold-made oil lamp dating from the Early Islamic period was found in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was inscribed in Greek on the upper and lower parts of its body, including the shoulder and the base. The lamp is of the Jerash type, produced between the late sixth and mid-eighth centuries CE. The lamp owner was most likely a Greek-speaking Christian—a resident of the city or a visitor from across the Jordan—on pilgrimage or on a commercial or social journey, attesting to a continuous presence of Christian visitors in the Holy City in the Early Islamic period.

A Nabataean Inscription Near ‘Avedat, Ohad Abudraham, Alexander Wiegmann Dec 2024

A Nabataean Inscription Near ‘Avedat, Ohad Abudraham, Alexander Wiegmann

'Atiqot

The corpus of surviving Nabataean inscriptions consists of thousands of graffiti written on rock faces and bedrock from Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Egypt, while a few such inscriptions are known from the Negev. The Nabataean inscription presented here was incised in the dark-brown patina of a limestone bedrock outcrop near ‘Avedat, a region dotted with many petroglyphs and inscriptions. The inscription is written in a typical Nabataean signature-type formula, comprising the name of the author preceded by a blessing and ending with the general greeting of well-being. The isolated location of the inscription should probably be connected with the historic …

Sidonians At Marisa (Maresha), Dalit Regev Dec 2024

Sidonians At Marisa (Maresha), Dalit Regev

'Atiqot

One of the most important epigraphical finds of ancient Idumea, which has led scholars to believe that a Sidonian/Phoenician community was present in Marisa during the Hellenistic period (fourth–second centuries BCE), is the well-known inscription uncovered at the site in 1905, reading “Apollophanes son of Sesmaios, Chief of the Sidonians at Marisa.” This inscription was discovered in a large, lavishly painted tomb in the city’s necropolis, allegedly supporting a presence of a Sidonian/Phoenician community in Marisa. Following a comprehensive examination of the material culture from Marisa vis-à-vis that of other Phoenician sites, this commonly-held assumption is put to question. Phoenician …

Why Law "Beyond The State" Need Not Be A Threat To Democratic Values, Paul Schiff Berman Dec 2024

Why Law "Beyond The State" Need Not Be A Threat To Democratic Values, Paul Schiff Berman

Buffalo Law Review

Discussions of “law beyond the state” almost inevitably run into objections from those who believe that sub- or supranational legal orders necessarily subvert local democratic governance. Self-proclaimed populists and others express concern that the “will of the people” will be unduly subjected to the dictates of “cosmopolitan elites”1 or local factions, or corporate capture. These objections range across the political spectrum. Those on the right tend to focus on concerns that transnational orders will impose human rights or immigration rules on a national polity, while those on the left worry about trade regimes that might impose local labor or environmental …

On The Readership Of Spinoza’S Writing & A Poetics For Thought, Tam Pham Dec 2024

On The Readership Of Spinoza’S Writing & A Poetics For Thought, Tam Pham

Honors Thesis

This paper invites attention to textual facts and other intricacies in the readership of Spinoza’s writing, which bring to the fore his thinking qua thinking under language, a consideration that seems at least underappreciated, if not misappreciated, by the very readership in question. In so doing, the paper reflects on the possibility—and perhaps necessity—of a poetological purview into a philosophical corpus, in terms of its being written under a sense of Latin as well as of other tongues, generated by and for a thinker to be the linguisticity within which he thinks. To put in differently: if Spinoza were to …

The paper aims to examine the temporal construction of fossil fuel threat in WHO reports. Such construction aims to encourage people to take preventive measures within time span that precedes the impact of the threatening element. To accomplish this aim, the paper employs Cap’s (2013, p. 16) temporal proximization strategy as …

Firsthand Versus ‘Secondhand’ Perspectives Of Harm: Emphasising Teens’ Firsthand Perspectives Of Online Sexual Content, Harrison W. See, Giselle Woodley Dec 2024

Firsthand Versus ‘Secondhand’ Perspectives Of Harm: Emphasising Teens’ Firsthand Perspectives Of Online Sexual Content, Harrison W. See, Giselle Woodley

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This article examines interview data from 24 Australian families, exploring how teens express perceived harms associated with online Sexually Explicit Material (SEM). For many teens, an encounter with SEM occurs prior to their first partnered sexual experience, often before their first kiss (Crabbe et al. 1; Power et al. 11; Woodley et al., Teen Perspectives 2). Of relevance was how teens expressed the potential harms of online SEM. Specifically, this article examines the difference between instances of teens expressing perceptions of SEM via the perspectives of others (secondhand perspectives) in contrast with instances of teens citing their own encounters with …

Acquisition Of English By Additional Language Learners In Inquiry-Based Classrooms Within International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program Schools, Valerian Goguadze Dec 2024

Acquisition Of English By Additional Language Learners In Inquiry-Based Classrooms Within International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program Schools, Valerian Goguadze

Dissertations

Many International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) schools provide English instruction to all students. The program has grown worldwide with a significant enrollment of students who speak a first language other than English, necessitating the need for an English as an Additional Language (EAL) curriculum. The IB’s philosophy of language acquisition is deeply integrated into its documents, school policies, and classroom practices. Consequently, all IB teachers, not just those who teach additional languages, are expected to have a basic understanding of how to teach English. Despite IB’s supportive-inclusive policies, EAL learners continue to face challenges in learning English.

There …

Culturally Responsive Social-Emotional Training And Supplemental Resources For Early Childhood Teachers, Danielle Johnson Dec 2024

Culturally Responsive Social-Emotional Training And Supplemental Resources For Early Childhood Teachers, Danielle Johnson

Masters Projects

Black students are overrepresented in discipline and behavior referrals in the early childhood setting. Given the increasing need for young black children to learn social emotional skills, how can teachers effectively support them with inadequate curriculum? There is significant research that shows the possible reasons why there is an over representation of black students being labeled as a behavior problem in early childhood educational settings. These reasons can create a negative cycle for black students causing much harm to their education and their views of school. Teachers can attempt to resolve this issue by implementing a culturally responsive Social-Emotional Learning …

Investigating Student Expectations, Buy-In, And Engagement In Lower Division Undergraduate Chemistry Labs, Elizabeth Blanche Vaughan

Dissertations and Theses

Laboratory courses constitute an integral aspect of chemistry education at the undergraduate level. Despite their prominence, a growing number of researchers have begun to think more critically about the value of laboratory learning experiences. As pedagogical decisions should be based on evidence, it is necessary for chemistry education researchers and practitioners to investigate the claim that teaching laboratories are a valuable part of science education. Therefore, the aim of this dissertation was to address one small section of this gap in the literature by obtaining a more robust understanding of students' expectations, buy-in, and engagement in lower division, undergraduate, chemistry …

Four major themes emerged from the findings for promoting EDI, which include a whole of organization commitment, multilevel consideration with recruitment, mentorship, training, and advisory board as an untapped potential. Recommendations …

Detecting Compromised Items In Computerized Linear Testing: A Novel Approach Using Autoencoders And Bert, Yiqin Pan, Sandip Sinharay Dec 2024

Detecting Compromised Items In Computerized Linear Testing: A Novel Approach Using Autoencoders And Bert, Yiqin Pan, Sandip Sinharay

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Item compromise is a significant concern in the testing industry. We propose a novel approach for detecting compromised items in computerized linear testing by analyzing response times and scores. Our method consists of three primary components. First, we employ autoencoders, a type of neural network, to model response times and scores, capturing the unique characteristics of each item and examinee. Second, we develop a BERT-based model to analyze examinees’ response patterns, predict expected response times. The characteristic vectors generated by the autoencoders are integrated into the BERT-based model, enhancing its ability to recognize response patterns. Third, an algorithm is designed …

Automated Text Scoring In The Age Of Generative Ai For The Gpu-Poor, Chris M. Ormerod, Alexander Kwako Dec 2024

Automated Text Scoring In The Age Of Generative Ai For The Gpu-Poor, Chris M. Ormerod, Alexander Kwako

Chinese/English Journal of Educational Measurement and Evaluation | 教育测量与评估双语期刊

Abstract Current research on generative language models (GLMs) for automated text scoring (ATS) has focused almost exclusively on querying proprietary models via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Yet such practices raise issues around transparency and security, and these methods offer little in the way of efficiency or customizability. With the recent proliferation of smaller, open-source models, there is the option to explore GLMs with computers equipped with modest, consumer-grade hardware—that is, for the “GPU poor.” In this study, we analyze the performance and efficiency of open-source, small-scale GLMs for ATS. Results show that GLMs can be fine-tuned to achieve adequate, though …

Hawkes Television, Inc. V. Maine Bureau Of Consumer Credit Protection: A New Loophole In Maine's Consumer Credit Code, Elizabeth S. Pearce Dec 2024

Hawkes Television, Inc. V. Maine Bureau Of Consumer Credit Protection: A New Loophole In Maine's Consumer Credit Code, Elizabeth S. Pearce

Maine Law Review

The Uniform Consumer Credit Code (U.C.C.C.), enacted in Maine in 1974, is a comprehensive regulatory measure intended to provide "an adequate volume of credit at reasonable cost under conditions fair to both consumers and creditors." Although the Code applies to all consumer credit transactions, consumer credit sales are subject to greater regulation than are consumer leases, and creditors have sought to evade such regulation by characterizing what is in essence a conditional sale as a series of short term renewable leases. The issue in Hawkes Television, Inc. v. Maine Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection (Hawkes TV) was whether such a …

Shadows And Seduction: Exploring The Duality Of Night In Romeo And Juliet, Elizabeth Woelkers Dec 2024

Shadows And Seduction: Exploring The Duality Of Night In Romeo And Juliet, Elizabeth Woelkers

Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research

This essay explores how societal perceptions of night evolved from a time of secret worship to a period fraught with fear and demonic influence. Further, this essay explores Shakespeare's use of night to frame the clandestine romance between Romeo and Juliet, highlighting the lovers' perilous engagement with darkness. By embodying the duality of night within the lovers, Shakespeare underscores the timeless struggle between the purity of light and the seduction of night. Additionally, this duality serves as a cautionary narrative, urging audiences to resist the allure of night's temptation and remain in the true light of God.

Political Posters, Periperformativity, And Power: An Analysis Of The Connections Between An Activist Movement's Image And Sound, Adeline Navarro

Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research

This essay argues that we can gain a better understanding of the relationship between ACT UP’s image and sound, specifically its political posters and subsequent chants, by using Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s theory of periperformativity to examine the periperformative dimension of these chants and thus the power they lend ACT UP members during civil disobedience demonstrations. Second, it argues that the periperformative has the capacity to register historical change because it is an instance of, we-work.

A Text-Linguistic Analysis Of Deliberative Discourse In Hebrew With Review Of The Lxx Translation, Timothy C. Lang Dec 2024

A Text-Linguistic Analysis Of Deliberative Discourse In Hebrew With Review Of The Lxx Translation, Timothy C. Lang

Masters Theses

This thesis intends to demonstrate that linguistics, specifically the text-linguistic (TL method), may be practically applied to biblical translation and interpretation. Consequently, one may use text-linguistics to discover the biblical author’s intended meaning expressed through the structure of the text. Foundationally, the work of Robert Longacre and Kenneth L. Pike is applied. Functionally, this thesis tests the process described in the dissertation of Ewell Ray Clendenon. While the word test is used, the test is not intended to validate or invalidate the TL method. Rather, the test is analogous to that of a mathematician whereby a proof test is applied …

Syntactic processing and verbal working memory are both essential components to sentence comprehension. Nonetheless, the separability of these systems in the brain remains unclear. To address this issue, we performed causal-inference analyses based on lesion and connectome network mapping using MRI and behavioural testing in two groups of individuals with chronic post-stroke aphasia. We employed a rhyme judgement task with heavy working memory load without articulatory confounds, controlling for the overall ability to match auditory words to pictures and to perform a metalinguistic rhyme judgement, isolating the effect of working memory load (103 individuals). We assessed non-canonical sentence comprehension, isolating …

Enhancing Cybersecurity Strategies Through Automated Cti Extraction, Risk Prioritization, And Privacy-Conscious Information Sharing, Spencer Rian Massengale

Theses and Dissertations

Cybersecurity operations require the ability to collect and analyze large amounts of cyber threat intelligence (CTI) to assess risks and formulate defensive strategies against emerging threats. This task has become increasingly complex due to the rapid evolution of cyber threats and the growing volume of unstructured, natural-language CTI sources. The scale of data and analysis needed to utilize CTI effectively far exceeds humans' manual capacity, especially for organizations with limited resources. This research focuses on leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning techniques to enhance CTI extraction, risk assessment, and data sharing. We utilized LLMs to automate the extraction …

Mixed Race Futurity Through Contemporary Archetypes: Mutants, Cyborgs And Dhampirs, Kobe Jackson Dec 2024

Mixed Race Futurity Through Contemporary Archetypes: Mutants, Cyborgs And Dhampirs, Kobe Jackson

Masters Theses

Analysis of Enlightenment philosphes reveals how the contemporary archetypes, mutants, cyborgs and dhampirs may be situated as sources for understanding mixed race positionality. Arranged on a trajectory of hybrid mythology reaching from ancient times into the present day, their contemporary relevance is put into context. Through modern speculative fiction, historical mythology and the theoretical frameworks of sociology, and philosophy, two tropes are revealed to be imposed roles for mixed race people. The first one, the tragic hybrid is a term which references a character specific to the context of American colonial slavery, the tragic mulatto. By reframing the term, tragic …

Expressive And Epistemic Pedagogies: A Blended Approach To Voice Development, Raquel Esma Haddad Dec 2024

Expressive And Epistemic Pedagogies: A Blended Approach To Voice Development, Raquel Esma Haddad

English Department Theses

As contemporary basic writing courses lean on Current Traditional texts that emphasize the inductive nature of thought in its relation to truth, this thesis explores expressivist and epistemic pedagogical approaches complemented by metacognition in their contribution to the development of voice with respect to student disengagement due to a disconnect in the understanding of writing for the academy in the basic writing student. The elements of the expressivist methodology as embodied in Writing with Power by Peter Elbow and the epistemic in Facts, Artifacts, and Counterfacts by Dave Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky each contribute to the research of this thesis …

Hella Much Variation: Intensification In Northern California English, As Seen Through The South Bay, Clara Mcmahon

Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity

In this paper I present a unified syntactic analysis to account for all of the typical usages of the Northern California lexical item hella. Specifically, I focus on hella’s usage in the South Bay—a subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area which corresponds roughly to Santa Clara County. Contrary to Boboc (2016), who proposes that Bay Area speakers do not allow hella to modify silent elements, I provide evidence that hella is a degree word which can license silent elements for South Bay speakers. Using a silent MANY and a silent MUCH (Kayne 2005), all of hella’s …
