Do Autism Diagnostic Narratives Have A Shape? Using Sentiment Analysis To Evaluate Autism Late Diagnosis Narratives And Ai’S Attitude Towards Disability-Related Keywords, Nava Bahrampour, Katherine Elkins, Jon Chun
IPHS 200: Programming Humanity
Do autism diagnostic self-narratives have something in common? The meaning of diagnostic labels is a culturally relevant topic in 2024, and I am curious to know if there are similarities in self-narratives about autism diagnosis. We are at an interesting moment in regards to our attitudes about autism and disability, where diagnostic labels like autism are usually viewed as either a tragedy or a relief. I wanted to look at three recent autism diagnostic self-narratives from late-diagnosed women to confirm or refute the existence of a specific type of “narrative” around diagnosis. I was additionally interested in how artificial intelligence …

Cooperative Learning And The Effects On Knowledge Retention And Positive Peer Relationships, Cathy Ray
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Teachers have long utilized different classroom collaborative learning strategies such as think-pair-share, partner work, or group projects to enhance student engagement and learning. However, effective implementation remains a challenge, requiring teachers to balance collaborative efforts with individual accountability. Teachers need to balance effective group work while maintaining an expectation of individual work. This study investigates the impact of cooperative learning on knowledge retention and the development of positive peer relationships among students. Based on a literature review about the effectiveness of cooperative learning in education, research was done with two groups of fourth-grade students in a rural, public school in …
Trauma-Informed School Improvement Plan, Amy Lundell
Trauma-Informed School Improvement Plan, Amy Lundell
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Studies show that adopting trauma-responsive approaches in educational settings can lead to a significant decrease in behavioral problems. By responding to challenging behaviors with more empathy and support, school staff can increase their capacity to understand the “why” behind what children display. This school improvement plan will examine the cornerstones of implementing a trauma-informed practice in a K-5 elementary school. To begin with, adopting trauma-informed approaches requires a shift in the organization's culture, policies, and procedures to ensure that every aspect of the system is aligned with the principles of trauma-informed care. This will not only reduce concerning behaviors but …

Unpacking English Language Teachers’ Perceptions And Practices Of Translanguaging: A Case Study Of Secondary Schools In China, Yuling Chen, Fan Fang, Weilei Zhang
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
Translanguaging has gained prominence as a viable tactic to assist the language learning of L2 learners due to the increasing variety of classrooms globally. Translanguaging pedagogy has been recently studied in diverse contexts. However, most of the research on translanguaging, especially in the Chinese context, is focused on higher education. Limited attention has been paid to secondary school. Therefore, this qualitative case study aims to fill this gap by investigating how language educators employ translanguaging in their English teaching in secondary schools. Data was collected from 4 Chinese EFL teachers across 2 secondary schools through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews, …
Child-Taking, Diane Marie Amann
Child-Taking, Diane Marie Amann
Scholarly Works
A ruling group at times takes certain children from their community and then tries to remake them in its image. It tries to rid the child of undesired differences, in ethnicity or nationality, religion or politics, race or ancestry, culture or class. There are too many examples: the colonialist residential schools that forced settler cultures on Indigenous children; the military juntas that kidnapped dissidents’ children; and today’s reports of abductions amid crises like that in Syria. Too often nothing is done and the children are lost. But that may be changing, as the International Criminal Court is seeking to arrest …
The Effects Of Guided Induction Completed Individually And In Groups On The Development Of Negation In Palestinian Arabic An Analysis Of Accuracy, Processing, And Rule Structure, Hana Baalousha
Theses and Dissertations
The effectiveness of different instructional interventions and the various ways such interventions promote L2 learning and processing has been the topic of recent research in the subfield of Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA). Previous research on the effects of guided inductive instruction (GI) in the second language classroom has left various lacunae to be addressed, such as the effect(s) of linguistic complexity, proficiency level, modality of instruction, and the target language (Ranta, 2022). A plethora of studies in the current literature compares the efficacy of GI to deductive instruction as students work individually in computer-assisted language learning contexts (CALL) revealing …
Leveling Up The Power Of Voice: The Impact Of Gamification On Speaking Participation Of Multilingual Learners In The Cybersecurity Classroom, Philip Peavy
Theses and Dissertations
The United States has a growing number of multilingual learners in its classrooms, but many schools are not prepared to support these students, especially in computer science education. There is a shortage of qualified teachers and few resources available in languages other than English. As a result, many multilingual learners are not actively participating in their computer science classes. This is a problem because computer science is a growing field with many opportunities for employment. One way to support multilingual learners in computer science education is through gamification. Gamification is the use of game-design elements and principles in non-game contexts. …

A Love That Harms: Violent Love Imagery In Hadewijch Of Brabant And The Influence Of Richard Of Saint Victor, Kenneth Hoyt
Dissertations (1934 -)
That medieval women mystics utilized violent imagery in regards to Love, and, subsequently, their union with it, is well established in the scholarly literature. The approaches to this imagery differ in their conceptions and approaches to the women: some approach via the influence of courtly literature and thus see it as an expression of a literary genre; others apply more modern critiques, seen in feminist and gender theory approaches, where, usually following Foucault, the emphasis is on how the language effects or disrupts medieval power structures; others approach the women from a historical lens, placing the women’s language as an …

Thesuppression Ofcoffeehouses: Acomparisonofthe17thcentury Londonandmoderncoffeeshopmovements, E. Spring Iskra
Selected Honors Theses
The coffeehouses of the 17th century in London were places of vibrant political discourse. Patrons of the shops could sit for hours debating relevant societal matters for hours with strangers of all different backgrounds. This environment was well-aligned with the theories introduced by Jürgen Habermas regarding the public sphere. Are contemporary coffee shops still places of vibrant discourse? In order to answer this question, an ethnographic study was conducted in a mid-sized city in central Florida analyzing nine local coffee shops. The analysis consisted of three primary categories: layout and design, discursive resources, and public events. The findings of this …

The rapid rise of generative AI represents a palpable paradigm shift: models like GPT-3 (and its subsequent iterations), DALL-E, and AlphaCode are becoming foundation models for many other AI-based applications. Foundation models may be used for many different tasks with minimal modification and are positioned to replace task-specific models of AI. This holds tremendous promise in society such as advancing scientific research, rethinking education and training, and creating new types of art and expression. At the same time, however, generative AI has its dark side such as accuracy risk, the threat of large-scale unemployment, potential security vulnerabilities, and AI misbehaviour …

Investigating Gender Bias In Large Language Models Through Text Generation, Shweta Soundararajan, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
Large Language Models (LLMs) have swiftly become essential tools across diverse text generation applications. However, LLMs also raise significant ethical and societal concerns, particularly regarding potential gender biases in the text they produce. This study investigates the presence of gender bias in four LLMs: ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, Llama 2 7B, and Llama 2 13B. By generating a gendered language dataset using these LLMs, focusing on sentences about men and women, we analyze the extent of gender bias in their outputs. Our evaluation is two-fold: we use the generated dataset to train a gender stereotype detection task and measure gender …
