We Aren’T Laughing: Analysis Of Male Stand-Up Comedy And Violence Against Women, Kaylynn R. Smith Oct 2024

We Aren’T Laughing: Analysis Of Male Stand-Up Comedy And Violence Against Women, Kaylynn R. Smith

Honors Theses

Misogyny is a prime example of a concept that humans cannot fully solve. In this thesis, I am examining comedy as an outlet for misogyny in today’s culture. This thesis collects data from the social media platform, TikTok, to gather social reactions to a prominent and controversial act in stand-up comedy. This act was performed by Matt Rife in November of 2023 on the popular streaming service, Netflix. In this particular act, Rife opened to his live audience with a joke about domestic violence and its victims. This study includes a qualitative content analysis of both the Netflix special and …

Personality (O.C.E.A.N) Driven Data Augmentation For Post-Trial Interviews In A Three-Arm Chronic Back Pain Randomized Clinical Trial, Kamakshi Moparthi

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This case study investigates the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and prompt engineering techniques for data augmentation,in the context of post-trial inter- view data (low-resource natural language data) from a randomized clinical trial on Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) for chronic back pain. The limited sample size from the original study necessitates the generation of synthetic interview samples, needed to draw meaningful inferences from the data and to further extend the study. This study explores the efficacy of various prompting techniques in different approaches such as sentiment inversion and personality-based augmentation. The goal is to elicit desired responses from LLMs …

Classroom Strategies To Increase Language And Communication Of Dual Language Learners, Lori Ruiz Oct 2024

Classroom Strategies To Increase Language And Communication Of Dual Language Learners, Lori Ruiz

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This action research was inspired by the researcher’s interest to better understand teaching strategies to help students who are Dual Language Learners (DLLs) improve their English language, communication skills, and classroom engagement. The researcher wanted to know how modeling and visual cues affect the language and communication abilities of preschool DLLs in the classroom. Over four weeks, the researcher observed three four-year-old DLL students in a public, full-day, inclusive preschool setting. To determine the students’ levels on the English Language Acquisitions objectives, the researcher used an embedded mixed-methods design by collecting and interpreting observations before entering them into Teaching Strategies …

What Meney Meney Mothers There Are With Whom I Would Not Trade: Scanning & Transcribing The 1916 Diary Of Frederika Heinen, Laney Collier '25, Caroline Gilson

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Laney Collier scanned and transcribed a 1916 diary owned by Caroline Gilson, passed down from her mother, Arlene Abel Luchsinger. The diary was kept by Caroline’s great-great grandmother, Frederika Heinen. Frederika recorded her daily activities, the weather, community events, household activities, and family member interactions. Laney and Caroline created a manuscript transcription style guide and appendices to aid in the reading of the diary. Diary research included women and diary-keeping practices, personal communication, Kansas history, and history of Clay County/Green, Kansas. This diary serves as a historical artifact that tells the story of a family and community in 1916.

Optimizing Resume Authenticity And Ats Compatibility With Llm Feedback Integration, Katie He, Justin Lau Oct 2024

Optimizing Resume Authenticity And Ats Compatibility With Llm Feedback Integration, Katie He, Justin Lau

College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program

Resume generation using Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT is becoming increasingly popular for automating the creation of customized resumes, but significant user modification is often required before submission. Common issues include poor alignment with job descriptions, inflated qualifications, and lack of authenticity, which undermine the effectiveness of LLM-generated resumes. This project addresses these challenges by integrating feedback from Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to guide LLMs in producing resumes that accurately reflect an applicant’s qualifications and better align with job-specific requirements. By optimizing the model's output through ATS feedback, the project aims to create more authentic, tailored, and ATS-compatible resumes, …

The Origins Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Rachel Rothschild Oct 2024

The Origins Of The Major Questions Doctrine, Rachel Rothschild

Indiana Law Journal

In a series of recent cases, the Supreme Court has invoked the newly named “major questions doctrine” to strike down agency regulations that protect public health and the environment. Several Justices have argued that while the name “major questions” may be new, these decisions are simply the latest iteration in a longstanding effort of the courts to curtail the explosive growth of the administrative state since 1970. The first paradigmatic example of this line of cases is the 1980 “Benzene” case, in which the Supreme Court set aside the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)’s new workplace standards for the …

Open Access archive

Objectives. Inadequate access to cancer care, high mortality, and out-of-pocket expenditure contribute to health-related suffering in low- and middle-income countries, making palliative care a relevant option. How palliative care development has alleviated suffering is not systematically studied, necessitating this review’s conduct. The objective of this systematic review with a framework synthesis approach is to identify and map the dimensions and indicators of cancer palliative care development and the components of integration between cancer and palliative care in LMICs. Methods. Uni- and multi-disciplinary databases like Cochrane, MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, CINAHL Complete, and PsycINFO will be systematically searched for eligible studies exploring …

Role Of Absolute Versus Relative Voice Rest In Post-Operative Management Of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions, Mihika Sinha, Suresh Pillai, Shama Shetty, Usha Devadas Oct 2024

Role Of Absolute Versus Relative Voice Rest In Post-Operative Management Of Benign Vocal Fold Lesions, Mihika Sinha, Suresh Pillai, Shama Shetty, Usha Devadas

Open Access archive

Objective Most otolaryngologists advocate absolute voice rest after laryngeal surgery, which proves difficult for patients, so we decided to evaluate the role of absolute voice rest versus relative voice rest in the post-operative management of benign lesions. Methods Forty patients were recruited and divided in two groups: absolute voice rest and relative voice rest. Pre- and post-operative voice analysis (fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, voice handicap index, voice-related quality-of-life scale scores and compliance) were noted at one week and one month. Results Voice analysis parameters including jitter (p = 0.035), shimmer (p = 0.020), voice handicap index (p < 0.001) and compliance (p < 0.001) were better in the relative voice-rest group. Frequency, number of voice breaks and voice-related quality of life showed no statistically significant results. Conclusion There was no significant benefit of absolute voice rest on post-operative outcomes as determined by acoustic variables. Compliance and quality-of-life scores were low in the strict voice-rest group. Therefore, we should reconsider post-surgical voice-rest protocol.

Masih Takut: The Psychology Of Fear In The Development Of Indonesian Social Movements, Loren Andrea Lacruz Oct 2024

Masih Takut: The Psychology Of Fear In The Development Of Indonesian Social Movements, Loren Andrea Lacruz

Indonesia: Arts, Religion, and Social Change

This thesis offers a contemporary investigation of the extent to which historical contexts contribute to Indonesian people’s reservations towards political conversations and social movements, such as protests and demonstrations. The historical contexts in question are focused on the Soeharto dictatorship from 1966-1999 and its long reign of censorship, citizen violence, and general human rights violations. The research employs a mixed-methods approach focused on cultural and participant observation, social media analysis, and interviews. Social media analyses offer insights into activism, particularly that of students and the youth, that are not generally available in scholarly sources. Interviews with Indonesian citizens and local …

If Roe Had To Go…So Must Bruen, Rebecca Brown, Lee Epstein, Mitu Gulati Oct 2024

If Roe Had To Go…So Must Bruen, Rebecca Brown, Lee Epstein, Mitu Gulati

Constitutional Commentary, Vol. 37 and later (2023–present)

The Supreme Court has linked the concept of stare decisis to the protection of judicial legitimacy. In Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Justice Alito’s majority opinion set forth five factors that called into question the legitimacy of Roe v. Wade, and found that they required an abandonment of the 49 year-old privacy right, for the sake of the rule of law. The next day, however, in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the same Court enhanced gun rights by articulating a new methodology for evaluating the validity of gun regulations, relying on a search for centuries-old …

Is The Constitution Of 1787 A White Supremacist Document? Against Essentialism In Constitutional Interpretation, David S. Schwartz Oct 2024

Is The Constitution Of 1787 A White Supremacist Document? Against Essentialism In Constitutional Interpretation, David S. Schwartz

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

A curious convergence is emerging in legal academia around the conclusion that the 1787 Constitution is a white supremacist document. Although most originalists would deny that contention, their methodology strongly favors, if it does not compel, an agreement with progressive, “neo-Garrisonian” scholars that the Constitution of 1787 is indeed a white supremacist document. Both the neo-Garrisonian and originalist elements of this implicit convergence stem from their “essentialism” in Constitutional interpretation: the idea that the Constitution or its terms or provisions carry a uniquely and objectively correct meaning, invariant over time, and independent of our evolving normative commitments.

This Article argues …

What Freedom? Freedom-A Disease Without Cure. Slavoj Žižek. London: Bloomsbury Academic. 2023. Pp. 328., Edward Sankowski, Betty J. Harris

International Dialogue

Slavoj Žižek's outpouring of books continues, including the volume, Freedom-A Disease Without Cure (2023). The title is somber, but the contents do not signal an unrelievedly depressed attitude on the part of the author. Rather, the book manifests expanding curiosity and far-reaching originality. That is, however, supplemented by some self-criticism, e.g., when the author broods about the apathy in himself and others that he claims is a result of the hyperactivity enjoined by and observed in contemporary capitalism. We hope to go beyond critical interpretation and evaluation of Žižek, to express our own new insights beyond those formulated or hinted …

Ethnocratizing The “Holy Land” The Politics Of Sacred Places: A View From Israel-Palestine Nimrod Luz. London, New York And Dublin: Bloomsbury Academic, 2023. Pp. 223., Curtis Hutt

International Dialogue

In this review essay, I will engage with some critical issues raised by Nimrod Luz in his recent book, The Politics of Sacred Places: A View From Israel-Palestine. This is a follow up to earlier articles that I have written for ID: International Dialogue and elsewhere related to holy sites as well as pilgrimage to, from, and within what is commonly known in the Western Christian world for the last one thousand years as the “Holy Land.” 1 It is also a companion piece to a recent review I have written of Marshall J. Breger and Leonard M. Hammer’s landmark …

Effective Practices For Dual-Identified English Learners In Special Education Using A Quantitative Secondary Data Analysis Of Access For Ells Testing Results And Qualitative Case Studies, Brett Frayseth Oct 2024

Effective Practices For Dual-Identified English Learners In Special Education Using A Quantitative Secondary Data Analysis Of Access For Ells Testing Results And Qualitative Case Studies, Brett Frayseth

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

A student dual-identified to receive English learning and special education services is legally entitled to receive both services. Although there are recommendations for how to provide these services, there is little evidence of what has demonstrated success, despite there being schools which have been able to create such programs. This mixed methods research focused on identifying schools in Minnesota that successfully provided measurable growth in their dual-identified student population. Data were gathered from educators in those schools to understand how they found this success for their dual-identitfied students. This research began with a quantitative secondary data analysis of ACCESS for …

Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan Oct 2024

Climate Change Adaptation Through Economic Democracy, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

As global climate change poses a serious threat to humanity's survival, equitable and just climate change adaptation has become the focus of several climate movements, social justice groups, governments, and international organizations. Climate sciences and studies have concluded that climate change not only impacts the planet's natural ecosystems, but also has cascading negative consequences on society and the economy. The existing paradigm of economic development has created vast wealth and resource inequality. The inequality further exacerbates the ill effects of climate change and makes vulnerable communities bear a disproportionate amount of the burden of climate catastrophes. This necessitates replacing the …

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

Local land-use plans help guide future development, but it is often difficult to compare content across jurisdictions, making regional coordination and plan evaluation challenging. This research reviews federal, state, and local data infrastructure guidance for land-use plans and compares such guidance to compliance with a California use-case. Findings indicate a number of obstacles to fostering data sharing and comparative analysis of plans: there is currently no central repository of land-use plans; plans are not uniform in format and are often out of date; many plans are not machine-readable thereby inhibiting text extraction, and planning language varies so greatly that there …

Understanding the neurobiology of semantic knowledge is a major goal of cognitive neuroscience. Taxonomic and thematic semantic knowledge are represented differently within the brain's conceptual networks, but the specific neural mechanisms remain unclear. Some neurobiological models propose that the anterior temporal lobe is an important hub for taxonomic knowledge, whereas the TPJ is especially involved in the representation of thematic knowledge. However, recent studies have provided divergent evidence. In this context, we investigated the neural correlates of taxonomic and thematic confrontation naming errors in 79 people with aphasia. We used three complementary lesion-symptom mapping (LSM) methods to investigate how structure …

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko Oct 2024

The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko

Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya

In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. Observations of EMI classes and non-academic spaces on school grounds, in addition to interviews and focus groups with students and …

Ontological Commitment In Nāgārjuna’S Madhyamaka On Inherent Existence And The Emptiness Of Emptiness, Alexander Shin Oct 2024

Ontological Commitment In Nāgārjuna’S Madhyamaka On Inherent Existence And The Emptiness Of Emptiness, Alexander Shin

Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples

This paper explores Nāgārjuna’s Madhyamaka philosophy, particularly focusing on the ontological consequences of his doctrine of emptiness and rejection of inherent existence. In it, I will examine Nāgārjuna’s nuanced anti-realist ontology that both denies the ultimate existence of all entities while preserving their conventional reality. Through an analysis of several aspects of Nāgārjuna’s Madhyamaka and their logical consequences, this study aims to demonstrate the internal coherence of Nāgārjuna’s thought. I additionally address potential objections to Nāgārjuna, attempting to defend Nāgārjuna’s philosophy as both consistent and rigorous, with enduring relevance to both Buddhist thought and contemporary philosophical discourse. This project was …

Healing Or Harming? Evaluating Perspectives And Impact Of Short-Term Medical Camps In Nepali Communities, Claire Rhyneer Oct 2024

Healing Or Harming? Evaluating Perspectives And Impact Of Short-Term Medical Camps In Nepali Communities, Claire Rhyneer

Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples

Medical volunteering, or “voluntourism, ” via short-term health camps is an increasingly popular way for doctors and paramedical staff to see a new region while still offering services to nearby under-serviced communities. In particular, these health camps are often propagated by the global north in largely low- and middle-income countries of the global south. Skeptics in literature point out that medical volunteers often lack cultural competence or knowledge of local health options in the community. Furthermore, ephemeral care is often too short to address chronic issues and prevents meaningful development of sustainable local healthcare. However, this literature often lacks the …

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt Oct 2024

Palette Of Perspective: Designing An Inclusive Art History Curriculum, Amy Bettencourt

Theses

This project aims to develop an inclusive art history curriculum as a high school level course, addressing the traditional Western-centric focus that has been marginalized non-Western contributions. By pairing Western and non-Western artworks within a chronological framework, students can compare artistic expressions across cultures, emphasizing parallel histories rather than a single Eurocentric narrative. The curriculum employs diverse interpretive methodologies to foster critical thinking and challenge conventional narrative. Designed for a 20-week semester, it focuses on a smaller number of key artworks per unit to encourage meaningful engagement and projects. While still rooted in Western art, the course connects global artistic …

The Fourteenth Amendment And The Vénus Noire, Farah Peterson Oct 2024

The Fourteenth Amendment And The Vénus Noire, Farah Peterson

William & Mary Law Review

This Essay makes two points. The first is that originalism is not a promising path for progressive causes. The second is that as the Constitution is amended, the meaning of the entire document is altered, and earlier text should be interpreted in light of what has changed. But instead of making these observations in the usual law review style, I’m calling on a figure out of nineteenth-century art, the Vénus Noire, to serve as our companion and guide.

This abstract has been taken from the author's introductory paragraphs.

A Survey Of Unikernel Security: Insights And Trends From A Quantitative Analysis, Alex Wollman, John Hastings Oct 2024

A Survey Of Unikernel Security: Insights And Trends From A Quantitative Analysis, Alex Wollman, John Hastings

Research & Publications

Unikernels, an evolution of LibOSs, are emerging as a virtualization technology to rival those currently used by cloud providers. Unikernels combine the user and kernel space into one ``uni''fied memory space and omit functionality that is not necessary for its application to run, thus drastically reducing the required resources. The removed functionality is significant however, and includes components that have become common security technologies such as Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), Data Execution Prevention (DEP), and Non-executable bits (NX bits). This raises questions about the security of unikernels. This research presents a quantitative methodology using TF-IDF to analyze the focus …
