Korea, Germany, And The Arsenal Of Democracy, Michael Fitzpatrick
Korea, Germany, And The Arsenal Of Democracy, Michael Fitzpatrick
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
In the 1970s, the United States and West Germany developed a vital transatlantic partnership focused on new military doctrines and technology that met the challenges of the late Cold War. Due to domestic politics and strategic concerns, the United States never recreated this type of relationship with countries in the Indo-Pacific region—specifically with South Korea. Using a unique synthesis of American, German, and Korean sources, this article argues that another partnership is required in Asia today. Rather than fall back on European partners, Washington should collaborate with Seoul to develop a new generation of doctrine and technology.

The Foreigner In Our Midst: Jewish Rights Debates In Revolutionary France, William Evans
The Foreigner In Our Midst: Jewish Rights Debates In Revolutionary France, William Evans
Best Integrated Writing
The debates surrounding Jewish rights during the French Revolution concerned many of the same subjects that divide the Western world today. The fear of the other, immigration as a political tool, and the disagreements over assimilation are all subjects which feature prominently today. In this essay Evans sets out to explore these debates while fairly assessing the historical informants.

State Capacity And Covid-19 Responses: Comparing The Us States, Kiran Auerbach, Joshua Y. Lerner, Hannah M. Ridge
State Capacity And Covid-19 Responses: Comparing The Us States, Kiran Auerbach, Joshua Y. Lerner, Hannah M. Ridge
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
This article addresses the interstate differences in outcomes from the coronavirus disease COVID-19 pandemic by focusing on state capacity. State capacity refers to states’ ability to create and implement policy. We posit that states want to limit death and destruction within their borders. COVID-19 created an instance in which states had a shared, preferred outcome but had very different levels of success. Using a novel measure of state capacity that allows for subnational comparisons – and is independent of ideological political will – we show that states with greater capacity experienced fewer excess deaths during 2020 and more successfully distributed …
Speculum Feminarum: Feminine Representation And Identity In Fifteenth-Century France, Karli R. Snyder
Speculum Feminarum: Feminine Representation And Identity In Fifteenth-Century France, Karli R. Snyder
Art & Art History ETDs
Late medieval views of women in Western European culture, specifically in fifteenth-century France, were predicated on the ideologies of "other." According to normative sociocultural attitudes of this period, women were immoral, lascivious, and indulged in frivolity. Their culturally acceptable and, therefore, natural roles were delineated solely as that of wife and mother. Although the origin of these views is obscured by time, there are scores of textual and visual examples of this cultural labeling. This thesis focuses on how the ideologies of feminine sociocultural roles developed and matured during the late Middle Ages. By comparatively analyzing copies of the visual …
Consider The Dementor: Discipline, Punishment, And Magical Citizenship In Harry Potter, Tracy Bealer
Consider The Dementor: Discipline, Punishment, And Magical Citizenship In Harry Potter, Tracy Bealer
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
In his 2004 essay “Consider the Lobster”, David Foster Wallace investigated the ethics of boiling alive an aesthetically unappealing, yet sentient and perceiving, creature to augment the pleasure of a human consumer. In the Potterverse, dementors are described by our human heroes as “terrible things” with “rotting” bodies, “unseen” mouths, and characterized as “among the foulest creatures that walk this earth” . Their occupation as guards of Azkaban Prison does little to improve their reputation among wizard-kind. However, how much of the dementors’ evil is ontological? Is it possible that these beings have been actively constructed as villains by wizarding …
Power, Labor, And Hierarchies: Deconstructing Work In Speculative Fiction, Joseph Kevin Sebastian
Power, Labor, And Hierarchies: Deconstructing Work In Speculative Fiction, Joseph Kevin Sebastian
Library Faculty Research
In discussions of literary and speculative fiction, a persistent divide emerges regarding the modes and aims of each genre. Literary fiction generally aims to reflect the human condition in familiar, “realistic” terms, exploring characters, relationships, and narratives within existing social structures. In contrast, speculative fiction is characterized by what Darko Suvin identifies as the “the strange newness” of the novum: a radically new element or phenomenon that reshapes the fictional world. This paper argues that the novum in science fiction provides a unique framework for interrogating the relationships between labor, knowledge, and power, revealing how these constructs are contingent upon …

“High Culture As Entertainment”: Hybrid Reading Practices In A Live Book Club, Magnus Persson
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
The Bushwick Book Club (BBC) is a live book club in which invited pop musicians perform musical interpretations of a predetermined literary work in a nightclub environment. What can a typical BBC show, with its strong emphasis on popular music and performance, teach readers about the uses of literature? This case study will investigate which reading practices are at work and in what ways they challenge traditional ideas of the forms, functions, and values of reading. Another important aspect concerns how the borders between high and popular culture, and between the printed word and other media are renegotiated. Based on …
Evolving Narratives Of Gulf Press Representations Of Women With Disabilities, Shujun Jiang, Muhammed Musa
Evolving Narratives Of Gulf Press Representations Of Women With Disabilities, Shujun Jiang, Muhammed Musa
Journal of International Women's Studies
People with disabilities make up 16% of the world’s population, an estimated 1.3 billion individuals. Because many people rely on the media to make sense of the world, a skewed perception of people with disabilities has become dominant in society today. People with disabilities are largely depicted in the media as deserving of pity and charity and always dependent on others for survival. The media provides us with narratives that we use to create interpretations of the world around us and, consequently, become bases of norms and attitudes about issues and persons around us. This paper studies Gulf Cooperation Council …

Medieval Hypebeast: The Conspicuous Consumption Of Joan I Of Aragon, Jonathan Seyfried
Medieval Hypebeast: The Conspicuous Consumption Of Joan I Of Aragon, Jonathan Seyfried
Quidditas
Limited releases, celebrity culture, and insane profit margins: these features define the hypebeast phenomenon of the early twenty-first century. The rise and fall of this cycle of conspicuous consumption bears remarkable resemblance to the craze for French culture in the Crown of Aragon in the late fourteenth century. King Joan I, starting from the time of his youth as the Duke of Girona, funded several projects to import French culture. In 1380, Joan married Violante de Bar, niece of the French King Charles V and the Duc de Berry. Once Joan and Violante ascended to the throne, they co-created a …

The Village People: Social Aspects Of Rural Settlements—Comments On Method And Theory, Eyal Regev
'Atiqot
The village is usually viewed as a basic geographic and economic unit, characterized by unsophisticated social organization, limited interpersonal ties and weak external social networks. However, studies in rural archaeology and anthropology revealed that village life was more complex. This article offers a survey of several key theoretical issues relevant for interpreting archaeological remains of villages, farmsteads and estates/villas from a social perspective. It focuses mainly on the organization of the settlement as a holistic unit and the specific houses/households within it. The article seeks to explore the complex correlation between the spatial and social aspects of rural housing—the way …

Malay (And Javanese) Loanwords In Frederick De Houtman’S Malagasy Wordlist, Alexander Adelaar
Malay (And Javanese) Loanwords In Frederick De Houtman’S Malagasy Wordlist, Alexander Adelaar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Frederick de Houtman’s Malagasy language material (1603) consists of a wordlist and short prose texts. It represents a dialect spoken more than four hundred years ago in the Antongil Bay region on Madagascar’s northeast coast, which does not have a documented modern descendant. This chapter investigates Malay and (to a lesser extent) Javanese loanwords found in this material. Most of these loanwords are demonstrably old and can be dated to an era preceding the Malagasy migrations to eastern Africa thirteen centuries ago. They provide invaluable insights into the world of the early migrants to Madagascar and the degree of their …
Barriers And Facilitators To Culturally Appropriate Cancer Health Education For Kenyan Immigrants In Washington State, Rael Kobe Odengo
Barriers And Facilitators To Culturally Appropriate Cancer Health Education For Kenyan Immigrants In Washington State, Rael Kobe Odengo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Access to culturally linguistically appropriate services, such as cancer information in languages other than English that consider a group's cultural beliefs, traditions, values, and practices, is increasingly recognized as a global health communication priority. However, African immigrants face significant barriers to accessing these resources, making it difficult for them to make informed healthcare decisions. Grounded in the conceptual framework of the Andersen behavioral model of health care utilization and the social determinants of health, the purpose of this study was to explore the barriers and facilitators to accessing culturally appropriate cancer health education by Kenyan immigrants in Washington State. The …

Institutional Challenges In Kosovo's Food Safety: A Comparison With Croatia’S Eu Accession, Liridona Shkodra, Sebastian Hess
UBT International Conference
Kosovo faces significant challenges in aligning food safety standards with those of the European Union (EU), a crucial component of its EU member-ship process. This paper explores the institutional challenges Kosovo faces in food safety governance by comparing its experience with Croatia's successful alignment during its EU accession process. Through a comparative analysis, the research highlights Croatia’s multi-level governance, risk-based management, and incremental reform as models that Kosovo can adapt to improve food safety standards. The analysis draws on institutional change theories, such as path de-pendency, to explore how Kosovo’s historical and socio-political context influences its reform efforts. External pressures, …

Rethinking The History Of The Seventeenth-Century Colonial Ordinance: A Reinterpretation Of An Ancient Statute, Mark Cheung
Rethinking The History Of The Seventeenth-Century Colonial Ordinance: A Reinterpretation Of An Ancient Statute, Mark Cheung
Maine Law Review
In 1648, the Massachusetts colonial government ordered into print The Book of the General Laws and Libertyes that included an ordinance, commonly known as the Colonial Ordinance. The Ordinance extended private seashore property rights to the low water mark but to no more than one hundred rods beyond the high-water mark. The 1648 Ordinance replaced an earlier version enacted in the Body of Liberties of 1641. While both versions of the Ordinance enumerated public rights of fishing, fowling, and navigation in the foreshore, the 1648 Ordinance provided the critical language extending the private boundary to the low water mark. Prior …

Remembering And Forgetting: National Identity Construction In Tolkien’S Middle-Earth, Sara Brown
Remembering And Forgetting: National Identity Construction In Tolkien’S Middle-Earth, Sara Brown
Journal of Tolkien Research
The medieval period in Europe saw the development of vernacular literatures, grown out of oral tradition and classical mythology, in which epic poems were a means of preserving culture, sharing a moral code, and offering solace in times of hardship. These epic poems, usually transcribed or translated in monastic scriptoria, were passed down through generations and enabled the sharing of memory via storytelling. In many ways, this early literature, rooted as it was in both the religious and the secular aspects of life in this time, was as much a part of the identity of the various European peoples as …

An Exploration Into The Social And Emotional Effects Of K-12 Music Education, Jerrod T. Perry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In music education, a student must learn to read music notation, develop eye-hand-mind coordination, develop keen listening skills, develop team skills for playing in an ensemble, and develop the discipline to practice. Several research findings show that musical training is a powerful intervention that could help students emotionally and intellectually mature. This research aims to connect the current research on music education with the lack of exploration and knowledge to find the correlation between music and students’ academic success. The methodology used for this study will be a quantitative historical study format directed to discover research-backed evidence based on this …
