Targeted Temperature Management Device Initiation Time And Neurologic Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest, Alexandra Liberti Apr 2024

Targeted Temperature Management Device Initiation Time And Neurologic Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest, Alexandra Liberti

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Targeted temperature management has been shown to improve neurologic status after cardiac arrest; however, recommendations for the timing of its initiation are unclear. Clinical trials have not directly studied time to targeted temperature management initiation, causing wide variability in protocol implementation. We propose a randomized, controlled, multi-center clinical trial to study the effect of early initiation of targeted temperature management in patients who achieve return of spontaneous circulation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Data will be compared among patients who received initiation of targeted temperature management within 3 hours to those in whom initiation occurred after 3 hours. The primary outcome …

Silent Cycles: Unveiling 19th-Century Perspectives On Menstruation, Women's Agency, And Societal Transformations, Anna Bennethum

Campus Research Month

In the 19th century, menstruation was a topic often vieled in silence and misinformation. Nonetheless, it is pivotal in discussions on women's agency and societal shifts. This paper explores 19th-century medical perceptions, the dissemination of reproductive knowledge through women's publications, and a case study of Adventist health publications. Through primary source analysis, this paper reveals how access to medical knowledge empowered women, especially in pursuing higher education. Additionally, examination of Adventist health publications showcases alternative remedies to menstrual disorders, granting women control over their reproductive health. This study illuminates the intersection of menstruation, women's agency, and societal change, emphasizing the …

Exploring The Role Of Intrinsic Motivation In Elementary Public-School Educators’ Willingness To Remain In Teaching, Lynnette K. Steinhoff Apr 2024

Exploring The Role Of Intrinsic Motivation In Elementary Public-School Educators’ Willingness To Remain In Teaching, Lynnette K. Steinhoff

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The experiences and perceptions of novice educators’ willingness to remain in teaching have been without clear research. The problem addressed by this study was the need to understand why novice educators remain in the field in order to support districts and legislators in updating policies and funding measures. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the intrinsic motivation of novice elementary educators within a K–12 public school influences their willingness to remain in teaching. Self-determination theory (SDT), with its psychological principles of autonomy, competency, and relatedness, was selected as the conceptual framework. Two research questions addressed intrinsic …

Michigan's Upper Peninsula Is The Cradle Of Paul Bunyan's Beehives, Thomas J. Straka Apr 2024

Michigan's Upper Peninsula Is The Cradle Of Paul Bunyan's Beehives, Thomas J. Straka

Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region

One of the Michigan Upper Peninsula’s earliest industries was iron production. Iron furnaces (smelters) were part of that industry; these were primarily fueled by charcoal, produced in hundreds of charcoal kilns scattered across the Upper Peninsula. The four basic kiln designs (rectangular, round, conical, and beehive) were all used in the region, with the beehive design becoming the predominant form. James C. Cameron, Jr. is credited with developing the beehive charcoal kiln design while employed by Upper Peninsula iron furnaces. This design was first introduced to the Upper Peninsula, and then to Northeastern Wisconsin, Northern New York, and the Far …

"From The Sea, Work": Investigating Historical French Landscapes And Lifeways At Anse À Bertrand, Saint-Pierre Et Miquelon, Meghann Livingston, Catherine Losier Apr 2024

"From The Sea, Work": Investigating Historical French Landscapes And Lifeways At Anse À Bertrand, Saint-Pierre Et Miquelon, Meghann Livingston, Catherine Losier

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Given its history and changing role within the French salt-cod fishery, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon was essential for French colonial expansion throughout the Atlantic World. Saint-Pierre’s sheltered harbour paired with the archipelago’s proximity to the Grand Banks made these islands an ideal locale for carrying out shore-based activities associated with the salt-cod fishery. In this way, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon can be viewed not only as an integral component of the French presence within the greater region but also as a unique cultural landscape within its own right. With particular reference to Anse à Bertrand, a site located on the southeastern edge …

The Official Pow’S Rights Beginning In The Civil War Forward: Co-Authored By Francis Lieber, Delynn Antoinette Burrell Apr 2024

The Official Pow’S Rights Beginning In The Civil War Forward: Co-Authored By Francis Lieber, Delynn Antoinette Burrell

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Historians have written many volumes on the Civil War, but few have examined the plight of prisoners of war. Although a few prominent historians wrote on the subject in the mid-nineteenth century, the topic quickly faded into obscurity until the mid to late twentieth century. Most historical works regarding prisoners of war focus more on individual prison camps rather than the system as a whole. This research seeks to fill the gap in the historiography of prisoners of war by examining the development of an official policy on their care and treatment. Through the examination of the War of the …

Catalysts For Change: The Sacralizing Impulse Of The Second Great Awakening And Its Transformative Impact On American Higher Education, Blake S. Hart Apr 2024

Catalysts For Change: The Sacralizing Impulse Of The Second Great Awakening And Its Transformative Impact On American Higher Education, Blake S. Hart

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation delves into the profound impact of the Second Great Awakening on American higher education and its enduring social consequences. Examining the period from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, the research uncovers the core belief that drove the Awakening—that America and its citizens were chosen for a divine purpose, endeavoring to manifest the kingdom of heaven on Earth. It explores how Protestant-led revivalism and social reform movements fueled by this core belief influenced the establishment and evolution of American higher education. Through in-depth case studies of Andover Theological Seminary, Lane Seminary, and Oberlin College, the research …

Laborers And Laundrymen: Sinophobia And The Formation Of American Masculinities, Adam Comstock Apr 2024

Laborers And Laundrymen: Sinophobia And The Formation Of American Masculinities, Adam Comstock

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This paper analyzes pre-existing scholarship and primary sources to connect 19th–20th century anti-Chinese sentiment to the notions of masculinity in the Americas. It takes a trans-national approach, examining Chinese labor migrations to both Anglo- and Latin-America and the effect they had on notions of gender. The paper argues that frontiersmen in the Americas, many of whom engaged in non-normative gender and sexuality practices, used anti-Chinese xenophobia to reinforce traditional masculinity. Connecting phenomena of race, gender, and sexuality, it takes an intersectional approach to history.

Pretrial Commitment And The Fourth Amendment, Laurent Sacharoff Apr 2024

Pretrial Commitment And The Fourth Amendment, Laurent Sacharoff

Notre Dame Law Review

Today, the Fourth Amendment Warrant Clause governs arrest warrants and search warrants only. But in the founding era, the Warrant Clause governed a third type of warrant: the “warrant of commitment.” Judges issued these warrants to jail defendants pending trial. This Article argues that the Fourth Amendment Warrant Clause, with its oath and probable cause standard, should be understood today to apply to this third type of warrant. That means the Warrant Clause would govern any initial appearance where a judge first commits a defendant—a process that currently falls far short of fulfilling its constitutional and historical function. History supports …

Raiders, Ransoms, And Religion: Captivity And The Road To Freedom For Christians And Muslims In The Early Modern Mediterranean, Philly Brainin, Philip Edward Brainin Apr 2024

Raiders, Ransoms, And Religion: Captivity And The Road To Freedom For Christians And Muslims In The Early Modern Mediterranean, Philly Brainin, Philip Edward Brainin

History Honors Papers

The Barbary Pirates are a fascinating historical phenomenon, but they were also a part of the larger system of early modern Mediterranean captivity. This system, which thrived from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century, saw Christians and Muslims enslaving and ransoming one another on both sides of the Mediterranean. These ransoms made up the base of the North African ransom economy at the heart of the entire system, and this economic motivator was joined by religious conviction in driving the actors within the captivity complex. This thesis argues for an updated historiography of this system, which has often separated …

You Cannot See It: Navigating Yorùbá Religious Artistic Materials, Stephen A. Fọlárànmí

Artl@s Bulletin

My research spanning two decades in Ọ̀yọ́ Palace generated series of questions about access to artistic materials in site-locational spaces, archives and private collections. I probe how scholars have navigated and negotiated these terrains, especially artworks created for religious functions. I explore alternatives to resolve field challenges and consider the effects of such hindrances in art historical research. Drawing on the concept of ọ̀gbẹ̀rì, anecdotes and personal scholarly experiences, I interrogate research access and propose approaches based on personal experience on the importance of Yoruba religion, and practice of initiation.

Perceptions Of White Therapists’ Social Class By White Clients Experiencing Rural Poverty In Maine, Rebecca Roveto Apr 2024

Perceptions Of White Therapists’ Social Class By White Clients Experiencing Rural Poverty In Maine, Rebecca Roveto

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

This dissertation explored the experiences and perceptions of white therapists’ social class by white clients facing poverty in rural Maine. Employing an intersectional methodology rooted in Critical White Theory, Critical Theory, and the Critical Theory of Care in Nursing, the study utilized semi-structured interviews, thematic coding, and discourse analysis. The findings revealed that regional cultural values, specifically intergenerational ideals of independence, privacy, and self-sufficiency, significantly impacted clients’ encounters with stigma and social exclusion. Notably, participants perceived that Mainecare’s, Maine’s Medicaid program, reimbursement rates influenced therapist accessibility and questioned if it was associated with a lower social class.

This study made …

Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie Apr 2024

Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project uses an historical archaeological approach to analyze the processes of cultural negotiation between disparate social groups living in a remote borderland in the early to mid-nineteenth centuries. Florida, first colonized by the Spanish in the 1500s was passed to the United States in 1821 as part of the young nation’s nascent Manifest Destiny. The Seminoles experienced multiple colonial conflicts, dealt with new diseases, and selected aspects of European culture to incorporate into their daily practices of lifeways.

Archaeological studies of culture change tend to focus on the product of colonial interactions rather than the processes of change that …

Divided By Design? Urban Renewal's Differential Impacts On Economic Outcomes By Race, Derik Suria Apr 2024

Divided By Design? Urban Renewal's Differential Impacts On Economic Outcomes By Race, Derik Suria

2024 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

This paper focuses on urban renewal in Chicago. There is remarkable continuity within the roots of urban renewal; many renewal projects were based on plans by large corporations, businesses, merchants, and other entities with substantial involvement and stake in urban center real estate. The implicit relationship between powerful business owners and city planners demonstrated how urban renewal supported a mutually beneficial, and even symbiotic relationship. Resources from the Claremont Colleges Library helped me to research my senior thesis and led me to take an interdisciplinary and novel approach toward the impacts of urban renewal from an individual and city-level perspective.

American Media And Memories: How Visual Media Tells The History Of The World Wars In The 21st Century, Julian A. Rispaud Apr 2024

American Media And Memories: How Visual Media Tells The History Of The World Wars In The 21st Century, Julian A. Rispaud

History

This paper examines how fictional digital media–film, television, and digital games–have both mirrored and influenced the American popular memory of the World Wars, establishing how visual media in the last 25 years has disseminated distinct historical themes and narratives to American audiences. Examining both World Wars together allow us to witness historical narratives of WWI and WWII intersecting across many works of media, applying critical elements of one conflict's memory to the other. This is accomplished through the process of historical thematic dissemination, through with creators off all three types of visual media pay homage to or draw on historical …

Sacramental Reason: Speculative Thought In Catholic Modernity, Jack Hanson Apr 2024

Sacramental Reason: Speculative Thought In Catholic Modernity, Jack Hanson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of the position of Catholicism in the conceptual organization of secular modernity. Inspired by the plenitude of roles the Catholic plays in formations of religious and cultural self-narration, I take up three thinkers for whom the Catholic represents above all a means of navigating the contradictory structures of modernity, avoiding both the simple negativity of critique and the delusion of nostalgic reaction. For Charles Péguy, early intimations of a modern mysticism lead him to a paradoxical appreciation of his greatest antagonists, which in turn sets the stage for his return to the Catholicism of his …

The Death Of The American Dream, En Español: The Problem Of Latine Homeownership In The Late Twentieth Century, Gabriel Aron Ramirez Apr 2024

The Death Of The American Dream, En Español: The Problem Of Latine Homeownership In The Late Twentieth Century, Gabriel Aron Ramirez

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation examines trends in Latine homeownership between 1970 and 2000. It describes how Latines became homeowners in the absence of targeted subsidy programs. In so doing, it tracks fundamental changes in housing markets and housing policy as the New Deal order crumbled and the so-called neoliberal order arose. The dissertation comprises three parts. Part One narrates the federal government’s retreat from fair housing in the 1970s at the same time that executive agencies “discovered” the dire housing conditions faced by Latines across the country. Part Two describes how Latine-led nonprofit organizations, particularly the National Council of La Raza, responded …

Afrekete’S Touch: Black Queer Feminist Errantry And Global African Art, Alexandra Monet Thomas Apr 2024

Afrekete’S Touch: Black Queer Feminist Errantry And Global African Art, Alexandra Monet Thomas

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The dissertation proposes that black queer feminist conceptual tools are advantageous to interpreting modern and contemporary art. Utilizing visual analysis and interdisciplinary black feminist criticism to analyze artwork by Mildred Thompson, Simone Leigh, Wangechi Mutu, Zanele Muholi, Senzeni Marasela, and others, becomes a way through which to build the concept of black queer feminist errantry. Defined as a political, aesthetic, and intellectual mode through which artists enact practices of wandering, refusal, fabulation, and waywardness, black queer feminist errantry was developed with the work of several scholars in mind, such as Sarah Jane Cervenak, Tavia Nyong’o, and Saidiya Hartman. The preface, …

Visualizing Routes With Ai-Discovered Street-View Patterns, Tsung Heng Wu, Md Amiruzzaman, Ye Zhao, Deepshikha Bhati, Jing Yang

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Street-level visual appearances play an important role in studying social systems, such as understanding the built environment, driving routes, and associated social and economic factors. It has not been integrated into a typical geographical visualization interface (e.g., map services) for planning driving routes. In this article, we study this new visualization task with several new contributions. First, we experiment with a set of AI techniques and propose a solution of using semantic latent vectors for quantifying visual appearance features. Second, we calculate image similarities among a large set of street-view images and then discover spatial imagery patterns. Third, we integrate …

‘Kazakh Means Freedom’ - Kazakh Language Policy And National Identity Before And During The Ukraine War, Mclean T. Brown Apr 2024

‘Kazakh Means Freedom’ - Kazakh Language Policy And National Identity Before And During The Ukraine War, Mclean T. Brown

Senior Theses

This thesis examines the link between language policy and national identity in Kazakhstan, tracing the relationship between the two across history and describing how they have been affected by the Ukraine War. The Kazakh government has put considerable effort into developing a national identity for contemporary Kazakhstan, but conflicting standards of production make it difficult for a cohesive, well-defined Kazakh national identity to be put forth. Through qualitative and quantitative analyses, phenomenological critical discourse analysis, and ethnographic research, this thesis strives to alleviate existing gaps in Central Asian studies research while arguing that language policy is a lens through which …

A New Canvas Of Learning: Enhancing Formal Analysis Skills In Ap Art History Through Ai-Generated Islamic Art, Krista Carpino, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This study explores the use of AI art generators to enhance formal analysis skills in AP Art History students, with a focus on Islamic Art and Architecture. Students, often entering the course with high academic achievements, find the unique challenge of articulating detailed visual descriptions of artworks. The study’s approach involves using AI image-generation websites, like wepik.com, where students create AI images resembling Islamic artworks studied in class. This method aims to refine their descriptive skills, focusing on visual evidence rather than relying on identifying details. The choice of Islamic Art, markedly different from other historical periods covered in the …
