George Butterworth’S Musical Contribution To A.E. Housman’S A Shropshire Lad And Bredon Hill And Other Songs, Brenden M. Smith
George Butterworth’S Musical Contribution To A.E. Housman’S A Shropshire Lad And Bredon Hill And Other Songs, Brenden M. Smith
Masters Theses
George Butterworth and A.E. Housman were highly influential scholars at the turn of the 20th century. Both men were well known for contributing to folk genres in their corresponding fields. Many famous composers implemented Housman's works, the most conspicuous of which was Butterworth. The composer was tragically killed in World War I in 1916, and today, two song cycles of his remain, both are the poetry of A.E. Housman.
Butterworth's Shropshire Lad cycles are some of the less-performed works in our classical repertory today because Butterworth abandoned most of his works during World War I. The following paper will give …

This dissertation examines the evolution of southern progressivism and national reconciliation from 1892 to 1930 through the lens of the Carlisle Military School in Bamberg, South Carolina. By analyzing archival documents related to the school's history and local newspapers from Bamberg County, this research reveals how southern progressivism influenced changes in the school's mission and the actions of its leadership leading up to World War I. The study highlights how South Carolina and Bamberg County played pivotal roles in advancing national reconciliation through programs and evolving missions at the Carlisle Military School. The years surrounding World War I acted as …
The Coalition Development Of Allied Close Air Support Doctrine During World War Ii, David S. Stieghan
The Coalition Development Of Allied Close Air Support Doctrine During World War Ii, David S. Stieghan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This research aims to discover how the American and British air forces worked collaboratively to provide ground support to their armies in Europe during World War II. While the official histories and scholars of the two countries concentrate on their unique national efforts, they analyze little of their cooperative efforts. By examining primary and secondary research sources to discover the experiments, doctrine development, and combat experience of both air forces, an understanding emerges that both nations combined their efforts in World War II in separate directions until beginning to work together on planning for the D-Day invasion.
By discovering the …

How Irish Women Survived During The Ulster Plantation, Theresa Cartabuke
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
When the English implemented the Ulster Plantation, many political, social, economic, and religious changes occurred throughout Ireland. When discussing this topic, women largely have been left out of the equation. This dissertation will bring forth new evidence regarding the ways in which Irish women were able to survive during the Ulster Plantation. Many life-altering changes occurred during this time and many women had to do what was necessary to ensure their survival by adapting to new environments and the English way of life. This dissertation will discuss how women were able to utilize English law to benefit their lives and …
Chaotic Waters And Well-Tempered Specters: The Philippnes As Source Of Overseas Labor, Joel David
Chaotic Waters And Well-Tempered Specters: The Philippnes As Source Of Overseas Labor, Joel David
Kritika Kultura
The precolonial territory that became the Philippines was a participant in maritime Asian politics and warfare that made the Southeast Asian region appear unstable and undefined to newly arrived Western observers. In truth, regional network-building amid labor shortages was a constant concern of the various peoples, with their interdependent arrangements occasionally readjusted because of piratical raids conducted by more capable or determined centers in order to increase their working populations. The Western occupation forces (themselves also subject to limitations in their number) sought to stabilize the communities they subjugated in order to more effectively bankroll their colonial projects, an arrangement …

Zainichi, Mobility, And Jeju Island: On The Representation Of Island In The Novels Of Kim Sok-Pom And Lee Yangji, Myungsim Yang
Kritika Kultura
During the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945), about a quarter of Jeju residents moved to Japan to escape their hardships, as Jeju Island’s industry was inferior to the inland area. In light of this, about 60% of Osaka Zainichi Koreans are deemed from Jeju Island. Against this backdrop, the meaning and symbol of Jeju Island, respectively, are well embodied in novels written by Jeju people who moved to Japan. For them (i.e., Koreans living in Japan), Jeju Island is not only their homeland but also a place where they have painful memories. In addition, Jeju Island means their own identities itself …
The Turn To The Archipelagic-Oceanic In Recent Critical Island Studies In Southeast Asia, Oscar V. Campomanes
The Turn To The Archipelagic-Oceanic In Recent Critical Island Studies In Southeast Asia, Oscar V. Campomanes
Kritika Kultura
This introductory essay briefly maps Critical Island Studies as it is so dubbed in Southeast (nesology/nissology, elsewhere) to be able to mark how the six contributions to this Forum Kritika reflect some of the most characteristic aspects and the latest conceptual turns of critical writing and scholarship in the field. A turn to the archipelagic-oceanic as the object of theorizing and critical study is observed to be the recent trend, itself reflected in the various essays here, with their choices of topics and texts in Indonesian, Taiwanese, Korean, and Filipino conjunctures and contexts.
Jiang Qing And The Visuality Of The Revolutionary Model Opera Films In The Cultural Revolution, Jiang Wei
Jiang Qing And The Visuality Of The Revolutionary Model Opera Films In The Cultural Revolution, Jiang Wei
Kritika Kultura
The Cultural Revolution (1966–76), which occurred 17 years after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, saw the production of the filmic Revolutionary Model Operas or RMOs, comprised of eight films within this period. The RMOs, which were actually operas filmed in 35mm, precluded all other film genres during the period. Political factors, issues, and developments in the Cultural Revolution, especially in the early 1960s, contributed to and inflected these films: they became the predominant popular cultural form through which the Cultural Revolution, as a set of discursive regimes, was articulated. Mao Zedong believed that the Chinese Communist Party …
Fidelities, Sandra Ataíde Lobo
Fidelities, Sandra Ataíde Lobo
Kritika Kultura
The present study articulates the approach to Vimala Devi’s intellectual biography between late 1950s until early 1970s with a look at her writings about Goa (1962-1971) as a cycle of cultural intervention on the coeval debate about Portuguese colonialism and Goan identity. A debate that was running both in Portugal and Goa, having narratives about Goa, Goan literature and print histories played a crucial role. Analysing such activity may not ignore the conditioning of writing and publishing under Salazar’s dictatorship, the possibilities for differentiated positioning within the regime, and the limits to dissent. Nor may it ignore how Portuguese opposition …
Does Copyright Help Or Harm Cultural Diversity In The Digital Age?, Sean A. Pager
Does Copyright Help Or Harm Cultural Diversity In The Digital Age?, Sean A. Pager
Kritika Kultura
Does copyright advance cultural diversity or inhibit it? Some blame copyright for fostering a global monoculture. Others contend that copyright enhances diversity by encouraging originality. Similarly opposing narratives exist regarding piracy: Some see piracy as an existential threat that will cripple cultural production; others argue piracy expands markets and exposes audiences to diverse content. This article reviews both theoretical and empirical literature on copyright’s effects and on the conditions arising in copyright’s absence. It argues that a regime of modest copyright protection, with appropriately tailored limitations, is likely to prove most conducive to copyright diversity. The Article concludes with a …
Translation And/As Research, Harry Aveling
Translation And/As Research, Harry Aveling
Kritika Kultura
The paper will consider some possible relationships between literary translation and research, the latter briefly defined as “the curiosity-driven production of new knowledge” (Nowotny xix). Two of these relationships are simple: (1) research as a stage in the preparation for the process of translation, and (2) research about the cultural and historical dimensions of already-existing translations. The third is more complex and controversial. The paper further asks: (3) whether the practice of translation is in itself an act of research. The third question raises further considerations about the different types of knowledge to be found in the university, and how …

Performing Masculinities: The Assumption Of Men’S Roles By Women Left Behind By Male Migrant Labourers In Southern Tanzania, Nives Kinunda, Angelus Mnenuka, Samwel Mhajida
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This article examines the empowerment of female farmers in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania due to male labour migration during the British colonial rule. The study sought to highlight the history of gender-based division of labour, the dynamics of labour division during the colonial period, the trend of females’ adoption of males’ activities, and women’s empowerment resulting from their assumption of males’ responsibilities. Data were collected through oral interviews, documentary reviews, group-focused discussions, and archival sources. The data were analysed and interpreted using a gender framework theory, which includes, among other things, gender roles and gender relations. Findings show that …
Stable Isotope Analyses Of Eye Lenses And Stomach-Content Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Variation In Arctic Whitefish Trophic Dynamics, Jonah A. Bacon
Stable Isotope Analyses Of Eye Lenses And Stomach-Content Analysis Reveal Ontogenetic Variation In Arctic Whitefish Trophic Dynamics, Jonah A. Bacon
Fisheries
Determining the ontogenetic trophic ecology of sympatric, morphologically similar fishes is critical for increasing our understanding of life history. We combined bulk and amino acid compound-specific stable isotope analysis of eye lenses with stomach-content analysis to examine ontogenetic trophic dynamics of four amphidromous whitefishes (Arctic Cisco Coregonus autumnalis, Least Cisco C. sardinella, Broad Whitefish C. nasus, Humpback Whitefish C. pidschian) from the central Beaufort Sea, Alaska. Compound-specific stable nitrogen isotope results showed slight increases in trophic position across ontogeny for each species and indicated the feasibility of this method for comparing the trophic ontogenetic development of closely related, mobile predator …
The Sound Of Change: Afrobeats And The Deconstruction Of African Stereotypes, Ibrahim Yusif
The Sound Of Change: Afrobeats And The Deconstruction Of African Stereotypes, Ibrahim Yusif
Journal of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies
This essay investigates how Afrobeats, a genre rooted in the dynamic cultural traditions of West Africa, serves as a strategic medium to counter the pervasive negative stereotypes about Africa perpetuated in Western media narratives. Often depicted through reductive portrayals of poverty, conflict, and disease, Africa’s representation in Western discourse starkly contrasts with the themes of vitality, resilience, and modernity inherent in Afrobeats music. I analyze the works of artists such as Rema, Davido, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage, highlighting how their music celebrates African pride, historical depth, and the empowerment of African women. Additionally, I examine the role of digital …
The Advent Of Modern Irish Drama And The Abjection Of Peasant Popular Culture: Folklore, Fairs And Faction Fighting, Mark Phelan
The Advent Of Modern Irish Drama And The Abjection Of Peasant Popular Culture: Folklore, Fairs And Faction Fighting, Mark Phelan
Kritika Kultura
This paper is part of a larger project in which the author is interested in recovering popular performative traditions and practices that have been occluded by the modernist project of the Irish Revival. This erasure has been compounded by subsequent historiographical paradigms that have reinforced the revivalist narrative of theatre history and excluded indigenous forms, traditions and practices (mumming, rhymers, strawboys) along with the wider performative culture of patterns, wakes, fairs, faction fights etc. This essay subjects to scrutiny what the author sees as a disjuncture between the riotous reality of peasant popular culture and its representation in Revivalist dramas …
Baroque Modernity And The Colonial World: Aesthetics And Catastrophe In Nick Joaquin’S A Portrait Of The Artist As Filipino, John D. Blanco
Baroque Modernity And The Colonial World: Aesthetics And Catastrophe In Nick Joaquin’S A Portrait Of The Artist As Filipino, John D. Blanco
Kritika Kultura
The point of departure for these reflections is the status of “Hispanism” as an aesthetic mode (and possibly an elitist position or ideology in Philippine society) in a largely ignored debate within Philippine nationalist circles after World War II. In this instance, Dr. Blanco is thinking of the polemic between nationalist historian and poet Teodoro Agoncillo and Filipino national artist Nick Joaquin following the inauguration of a Philippine national republic formally recognized by the League of Nations. In this paper, he wants to focus on one, perhaps the key, manifestation of this "Hispanism" – Joaquin’s recovery of the baroque mode …
Sidonians At Marisa (Maresha), Dalit Regev
Sidonians At Marisa (Maresha), Dalit Regev
'Atiqot
One of the most important epigraphical finds of ancient Idumea, which has led scholars to believe that a Sidonian/Phoenician community was present in Marisa during the Hellenistic period (fourth–second centuries BCE), is the well-known inscription uncovered at the site in 1905, reading “Apollophanes son of Sesmaios, Chief of the Sidonians at Marisa.” This inscription was discovered in a large, lavishly painted tomb in the city’s necropolis, allegedly supporting a presence of a Sidonian/Phoenician community in Marisa. Following a comprehensive examination of the material culture from Marisa vis-à-vis that of other Phoenician sites, this commonly-held assumption is put to question. Phoenician …

Dr. Frank L. Jones, a distinguished fellow of the US Army War College, provides a useful and comprehensive review of author William D. James’s first book, “an excellent study for members of the defense community who want to understand British grand strategy historically or aspire to policy-making or strategy-making positions and need a sound introduction.” Jones outlines James’s main arguments and the value of the case studies presented, including the “East of Suez” case study, a “vivid example of strategic adjustment where timing, domestic …
A Methodological Framework For The Archaeology Of Conflicts In The Southern Levant, And The Battle Of Hattin (July 3–4, 1187), Rafael Y. Lewis
A Methodological Framework For The Archaeology Of Conflicts In The Southern Levant, And The Battle Of Hattin (July 3–4, 1187), Rafael Y. Lewis
'Atiqot
This article presents a research framework for the Archaeology of Conflicts/Battlefield Archaeology. This work was motivated by the methodological challenge posed by the very attempt to study material evidence of events of short duration in the landscape. Such events occurred outside the boundaries of conventional archaeological sites, in the landscape, which is generally subject to more frequent changes. The theoretical model is presented through an examination of the Battle of Hattin, a decisive event that took place on July 3–4, 1187, within the days of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem (1099–1291). This theoretical construct can be applied to the study …

The Fortifications Of Tel Burna: A Reappraisal After Twelve Seasons Of Excavations (2010–2022), Aharon Tavger, Chris Mckinny, Deborah Cassuto, Jane Gaastra, Steven Ortiz, Itzhaq Shai
'Atiqot
Tel Burna’s prominent summit, encompassed by a 70 × 70 m casemate fortification, has attracted attention since at least the nineteenth century CE. An analysis of the archaeological data collected during ongoing excavations at the tell indicates that these fortifications were built in the late tenth or early ninth century BCE. The fortification of this Judahite stronghold, located on the border with Philistia, remained in use for the next 200 years. Recently, evidence has come to light of a massive undertaking to reinforce and strengthen the western side of the casemate wall in the late eighth century BCE. The authors …
Shadows And Seduction: Exploring The Duality Of Night In Romeo And Juliet, Elizabeth Woelkers
Shadows And Seduction: Exploring The Duality Of Night In Romeo And Juliet, Elizabeth Woelkers
Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research
This essay explores how societal perceptions of night evolved from a time of secret worship to a period fraught with fear and demonic influence. Further, this essay explores Shakespeare's use of night to frame the clandestine romance between Romeo and Juliet, highlighting the lovers' perilous engagement with darkness. By embodying the duality of night within the lovers, Shakespeare underscores the timeless struggle between the purity of light and the seduction of night. Additionally, this duality serves as a cautionary narrative, urging audiences to resist the allure of night's temptation and remain in the true light of God.

A Study On Private Piano Curriculum Using Edwin Gordon’S Music Learning Theory, Cody Chandler
Masters Theses
This quantitative descriptive research study addresses the deficiencies in modern piano educational literature pertaining to aural development at the earliest stages of piano education. Contemporary piano methodologies often prioritize music notation over aural skill development during the initial stages of instruction. This study addresses this imbalance, offering insights into curriculum selection based on its influence on competition performance scores, music theory exam results, and student retention. The participants in this study are 329 piano students who began lessons between kindergarten and twelfth grade selected from five qualified piano teachers from 2010-2024. Data was collected by recording competition and festival scores, …

God The Protector: An Exposition Of Psalm 68’S Thematic Coherence On The Warrior God’S Care For The Oppressed, Michal Lynn Lee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
From the beginning of the Creation saga, the Warrior God can be visualized taming the chaotic waters of the deep with the authoritative command of “Let there be light.” This theme catapults through the pages of Scripture and climaxes in the iconic scene of the end of the age as described in the book of Revelation where God as a warrior is meting out judgment against those whose faces have turned against him. Inherent in warrior character are aspects of strength, courage, righteousness, and sometimes even divine brutality. Within these warrior-istic characteristics of God is the trait of protector or …

Feminist History: Forgotten Women Writers Of The Generation Of 1927 In Spain, Feixiang Liu
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study primarily focuses on the women writers of the Generation of 1927 in Spain who rose to prominence in the 1920s. Often referred to as Las Sinsombrero, these women writers have made significant contributions to gender equality and literature; however, despite their outstanding achievements, knowledge of this literary movement tends to focus only on the male writers, and it is only in recent years that the women writers in this generation have been rediscovered. The historical context in which these writers emerged—a period marked by the rise of feminism in Spain—is considered as an important part of understanding the …

This historical study examines the Philippine-American War through the personal experiences of four individuals: David Fagen, a Black-American soldier who joined the Filipino resistance; Datu Ali, a Moro chieftain; George W. Suriley, an American soldier; and Apolinario Mabini, an advisor to Aguinaldo and a Filipino revolutionary. The paper explores the complex motivations, beliefs, and perspectives of individuals on both sides of the conflict, shedding light on the human cost of American imperialism and the diverse reactions to the United States' expansion into the Philippines. It further examines the racial and social dynamics within the U.S. military and the experiences of …
Outside The Dichotomy: Redefining Judith As A Prophet, Heidyn Von Bose
Outside The Dichotomy: Redefining Judith As A Prophet, Heidyn Von Bose
Studia Antiqua
The character of Judith has often been reduced to a dichotomy: is she a pro-feminist or an anti-feminist character? This traditional debate limits Judith and tries to squeeze her into ill-fitting literary boxes. The fol- lowing paper offers a more nuanced interpretation for the character and role of Judith within her story, particularly that Judith is a prophet. It first dem- onstrates that she meets the criteria of a prophet by synthesizing the works of Martti Nissinen, Esther Hamori, and Lester L. Grabbe. It then examines how her “irritations”—morally or culturally questionable actions—do not disqualify her from this role. The …

The Raye Montague Digital Collection consists of 735 items that have been digitized and catalogued to tell the story of Raye Montague, the United States Navy hidden figure. The Collection addresses the need to remedy decades of historical invisibility Raye Montague was subjected to because of gender and racial discrimination despite her fundamental contributions to U.S. history. This thesis details how the Collection inserts Raye Montague within a broader historical context that uncovers the role Black women had as federal employees in the U.S. military during and after World War II. It also explains how, in designing the Collection, I …
