Implementation Of A Recreational Program For Those With Visual Impairments, Caitllyn Fussy Jan 2024

Implementation Of A Recreational Program For Those With Visual Impairments, Caitllyn Fussy

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose: Quality of life can be found through participation in meaningful and rewarding occupations (Cote-Letlerc, 2017). Studies have shown that individuals with visual impairments have impacted occupational performance and engagement in occupations leading to a loss of independence, changes to identity, and lowered self-esteem (Duquette, et. al., 2019; Kumar, et. al., 2022). Some barriers these individuals face that impact their ability to participate in meaningful occupations include having fewer opportunities available, difficulty navigating, having impaired proprioception, accessibility, and physical or cognitive impairments (Diaz, 2019; Hill, 2023). Opportunities to engage in recreational activities presented as a clear need for this scholarly …

Inclusive Physical Education And Its Impact On Adolescents With Disabilities In A School Setting, Ashley Renee Freund Jan 2024

Inclusive Physical Education And Its Impact On Adolescents With Disabilities In A School Setting, Ashley Renee Freund

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Background: Adolescents with disabilities frequently encounter barriers preventing participation in physical education alongside their peers. The absence of inclusive practices and adaptations tailored to students with disabilities poses challenges that impact students' physical health and mental well-being (Carbone et al., 2021). Fostering improved mental and physical health for adolescents with and without disabilities is related to group-based programming as well as instructor leadership and knowledge regarding disability and activity modification (Shirazipour et al., 2020). By integrating these elements, physical education teachers can optimize the benefits of participation in physical education, including enhanced mental health, increased physical participation and engagement, and …

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Title: A Resource Guide for Improving Participation in the Pediatric Casper

Community Background and Problem: Regardless of ability level, all children should have the same rights, access, and opportunities to participate in leisure, social, physical, and recreational activities. Research shows that typically developing children participate more in social, physical, and recreational activities than children with disabilities (Solish et al., 2010). Identified barriers that can decrease participation for children with disabilities include the child’s functional limitations, high costs, accessibility, and lack of known nearby facilities, programs, and sports (Murphy & Carbone, 2018; Aytur et al., 2018). Participation in leisure, social, physical, …

A Holistic Approach To Occupational Therapy Intervention: Addressing Psychosocial Factors And Upper Extremity Injuries, Aleece N. Durbin

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose: Occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) working in a hand therapy setting primarily focus on neuromusculoskeletal injuries of the upper extremity (UE) (Kurrus et al., 2023). However, clients who experience UE injuries can also experience adverse psychosocial factors limiting their performance in daily activities (Kurrus et al., 2023). Psychosocial factors are rarely addressed in the practice setting due to institutional barriers and a lack of confidence in OTPs (Kurrus et al., 2023). This project aims to provide OTPs with resources to provide occupational therapy intervention to address psychosocial factors despite the barriers present within the practice setting of hand therapy.

Activity Levels Across The Intensity Spectrum In Athletes: A Systematic Review Protocol, Jacob J. Capin, Jena Heck Street, Alissa V. Fial, Nicola D. Ridgers, Grant R. Tomkinson

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

Physical activity (PA) promotes better cardiometabolic health, physical function, brain health and longevity. In contrast, prolonged sedentary behaviour (SB) is a risk factor for many chronic diseases and poor health. Limited research has evaluated or synthesised how competitive sports participation influences PA across the lifespan. Some evidence suggests, ironically, that former competitive athletes may be insufficiently active and current athletes may be highly sedentary away from sport. This study describes the protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis on activity levels across the intensity spectrum in athletes, addressing the primary research question: is sports participation significantly associated with PA and/or …

Methods That Support The Validation Of Agent-Based Models: An Overview And Discussion, Andrew Collins, Matthew Koehler, Christopher Lynch

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Validation is the process of determining if a model adequately represents the system under study for the model’s intended purpose. Validation is a critical component in building the credibility of a simulation model with its end-users. Effectively conducting validation can be a daunting task for both novice and experienced simulation developers. Further compounding the difficult task of conducting validation is that there is no universally accepted approach for assessing a simulation. These challenges are particularly relevant to the paradigm of Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) because of the complexity found in these models’ mechanisms and in the real-world situations they …

Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields Increase Antibiotic Susceptibility In Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Alexandra E. Chittams-Miles, Areej Malik, Erin B. Purcell, Claudia Muratori

Bioelectrics Publications

Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs). SSTIs caused by bacteria resistant to antimicrobials, such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), are increasing in incidence and have led to higher rates of hospitalization. In this study, we measured MRSA inactivation by nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEF), a promising new cell ablation technology. Our results show that treatment with 120 pulses of 600 ns duration (28 kV/cm, 1 Hz), caused modest inactivation, indicating cellular damage. We anticipated that the perturbation created by nsPEF could increase antibiotic efficacy if nsPEF were applied as a co-treatment. To test this …

Money Matters To All Students, George Padilla, Michelle H. Abrego

Organization and School Leadership Faculty Publications

The question whether money matters in education strikes at the foundation of America’s democracy—an educated electorate. Despite decades of evidence that money does matter, the question still remains unanswered among many and even answered to the contrary of the evidence. It is important to fully understand that money does matter in American education, American lives, and America’s future and to increase awareness of political and social factors that undermine that money matters for all students to learn.

An Occupation-Based Approach To Stroke Recovery In Rural America, Julia Warmack

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose In the United States, strokes are one of the leading causes of death as well as a leading cause of long-term disability (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022). Due to the disease's demanding and intense nature, occupational therapists must provide evidence-based care to help support those in need. Occupation-based treatment has been proven to provide better long-term results and improve the transferability of skills (Rostami et al., 2017). However, many practitioners still rely on rote exercise due to lacking resources, access, or training (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017).

Methodology A model-guided literature review was …

Intersectionality Matters In Food And Drug Law, Colleen Campbell Jan 2024

Intersectionality Matters In Food And Drug Law, Colleen Campbell

University of Colorado Law Review

Feminist scholars critique food and drug law as a site of gender bias and regulatory neglect. The historical exclusion of women from clinical trials by the FDA prioritized male bodies as the object of clinical research and therapies. Likewise, the FDA’s prior restriction on access to contraceptive birth control illustrates how patriarchal and paternalistic attitudes within the Agency can harm women’s reproductive health. However, there is little analysis of how race and gender intersect in this domain. This Article uses the regulation of skin-lightening cosmetics products to illustrate why and how intersectionality matters in food and drug law. While the …

Beyond Discrimination: Market Humiliation And Private Law, Hila Keren Jan 2024

Beyond Discrimination: Market Humiliation And Private Law, Hila Keren

University of Colorado Law Review

Market humiliation is a corrosive relational process to which the law repeatedly fails to respond due to the law’s heavy reliance on the discrimination paradigm. In this process, providers of market resources, from housing and work to goods and services, use their powers to reject or mistreat other market users due to their identities. They thus cause users severe harm and deprive them of dignified participation in the marketplace. The problem has recently reached a peak. The discussion in 303 Creative v. Elenis indicates that the Supreme Court might legitimize market humiliation by granting private providers broad free speech exemptions …
