Investigating The Role Of The Mammalian Dsrnai Pathway In Preventing Infection By Respiratory Syncytial Virus And Human Coronavirus, Iliana Portelli Jan 2024

Investigating The Role Of The Mammalian Dsrnai Pathway In Preventing Infection By Respiratory Syncytial Virus And Human Coronavirus, Iliana Portelli

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

dsRNA interference (dsRNAi) is an antiviral innate immune response that uses long dsRNA (>40bp) to inhibit gene expression through the RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. dsRNAi is an important antiviral defense mechanism in plants, invertebrates, and fungi. However, its use as an antiviral mechanism in vertebrates is not well understood. Evidence proving the significance of dsRNAi in vertebrate cells does exist, but there is still a lack of research in this area, particularly with the use of long dsRNA. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and human coronaviruses (HCoVs) are two single stranded RNA (ssRNA) viruses that infect airway cells. This study …

The Role Of Care Webs In Sustaining Engagement And Well-Being Among Marginalized Emerging Adults Involved In Climate Justice Activism, Vincent Boisclair Jan 2024

The Role Of Care Webs In Sustaining Engagement And Well-Being Among Marginalized Emerging Adults Involved In Climate Justice Activism, Vincent Boisclair

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The settler-caused climate crisis poses severe global threats, driving action from youth and emerging adults. Prior to COVID-19 lockdowns, youth-led climate organizations were highly active, but social distancing has hindered youth engagement and exacerbated psychological distress among marginalized emerging adult climate justice activists. Previous research indicates that well-being and social participation are interrelated. Guided by the critical transformative paradigm, this qualitative research examines the effects of care webs on the well-being and sustained engagement of marginalized emerging adults in climate justice activism. Care webs, informed by disability justice, are de-professionalized, non-hierarchical, reciprocal, and anti-oppressive systems of care. Participants were asked …

Reducing Prescription Drug Prices: How Competition Can Make Medications Affordable For Patients - Testimony Of Rachel E. Sachs, Rachel Sachs Jan 2024

Reducing Prescription Drug Prices: How Competition Can Make Medications Affordable For Patients - Testimony Of Rachel E. Sachs, Rachel Sachs

Scholarship@WashULaw

In this testimony, I will explain how existing law both keeps branded drug prices high but has also enabled the development of lower-cost generic and biosimilar competition for branded prescription drugs and biological products. This competition can be used to promote access to affordable prescription drugs, benefiting not only patients but also our public payers. However, I will also explain the ways in which existing legislative and regulatory efforts have not always succeeded in promoting competition and will offer a path forward for this Committee to examine reforms that not only encourage the approval of lower-cost products but also ensure …

Measuring Compliance With The California Consumer Privacy Act Over Space And Time, Jens Frankenreiter, Van Tran, Aarushi Mehrotra, Marshini Chetty, Nick Feamster, Lior Strahilevitz

Scholarship@WashULaw

The widespread sharing of consumers personal information with third parties raises significant privacy concerns. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) mandates that online businesses offer consumers the option to opt out of the sale and sharing of personal information. Our study automatically tracks the presence of the opt-out link longitudinally across multiple states after the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) went into effect. We categorize websites based on whether they are subject to CCPA and investigate cases of potential non-compliance. We find a number of websites that implement the opt-out link early and across all examined states but also find …

Regulatory Monitoring In The Information Economy, Brenda Dvoskin Jan 2024

Regulatory Monitoring In The Information Economy, Brenda Dvoskin

Scholarship@WashULaw

The administrative state is inadequately structured to define and implement public values related to the design and operation of digital architectures, systems, and processes. The Reimagining the Governance Stack Project at Georgetown Law is a long-term, full-stack effort to reinvent the administrative state so that it is capable of governing the information economy in accordance with public priorities. This first concept paper focuses on regulatory monitoring capacities. Agencies need new tools to monitor compliance with existing public mandates and understand the information economy in order to develop new and more effective regulation.

Speaking Back To Sexual Privacy Invasions, Brenda Dvoskin Jan 2024

Speaking Back To Sexual Privacy Invasions, Brenda Dvoskin

Scholarship@WashULaw

Many big players in the internet ecosystem do not like hosting sexual expression. They often justify these bans as a protection of sexual privacy. For example, Meta states that it removes sexual imagery to prevent the nonconsensual distribution of sexual images. In response, this Article argues that banning digital sexual expression is counterproductive if the aim is to alleviate the harms inflicted by sexual privacy losses.

Contemporary sexual privacy theory, however, lacks analytical tools to explain why nudity bans harm the interests they intend to protect. This Article aims at building those tools. The main contribution is an invitation to …

The False Promise Of Jurisdiction Stripping, Daniel Epps, Alan M. Trammell Jan 2024

The False Promise Of Jurisdiction Stripping, Daniel Epps, Alan M. Trammell

Scholarship@WashULaw

Jurisdiction stripping is seen as a nuclear option. Its logic is simple: by depriving federal courts of jurisdiction over some set of cases, Congress ensures those courts cannot render bad decisions. In theory, it frees up the political branches and the states to act without fear of judicial second-guessing. To its proponents, it offers the ultimate check on unelected and unaccountable judges. To critics, it poses a grave threat to the separation of powers. Both sides agree, though, that jurisdiction stripping is a powerful weapon. On this understanding, politicians, activists, and scholars throughout American history have proposed jurisdiction stripping measures …

The Judicial Restraint Trilogy: Why The Supreme Court's Decisions From Last Term Offer New Hope For Remedial Discipline, Alisa B. Klein Jan 2024

The Judicial Restraint Trilogy: Why The Supreme Court's Decisions From Last Term Offer New Hope For Remedial Discipline, Alisa B. Klein

Campbell Law Review

The headline from last Term is that, by overruling Chevron, the Supreme Court dealt a body blow to the administrative state. The thesis of this article is that other decisions from last Term provide an important but overlooked ray of hope that the Supreme Court will protect federal agencies from unjustified judicial intrusions by putting an end to universal district court remedies.

In Corner Post v. Federal Reserve Board, the Supreme Court reserved the question whether the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) authorizes the remedy of universal vacatur. And in the cases that I dub the Judicial Restraint Trilogy Starbucks v. …

The Inherent Harm Of Employment Discrimination: What Behavioral Economics Teaches Us About Title Vii's Adverse Action Requirement, Janelle L. Ariota Jan 2024

The Inherent Harm Of Employment Discrimination: What Behavioral Economics Teaches Us About Title Vii's Adverse Action Requirement, Janelle L. Ariota

Campbell Law Review

For decades, many courts have wrestled with the judicially created concept of "adverse employment actions" in determining whether a plaintiffhas proved a primafacie case of employment discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of1964. Circuit courts have regularly applied different types of heightened adverse employment action standards, which only muddied the already complicated understanding ofworkplace discrimination. This Comment explores the recent circuit split concerning adverse employment actions and the introduction of the Supreme Court's new "some harm" testfrom Muldrow v. City of St. Louis. This Comment takes the position that principal behavioral economics theories can inform the judicial …

Profit, Mission, And Protest At Work, Marion Crain Jan 2024

Profit, Mission, And Protest At Work, Marion Crain

Scholarship@WashULaw

The classic understanding of capitalism maintains that the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits. But in the last decade, many firms have announced commitments to various social justice issues, folding them into corporate mission statements, codes of corporate social responsibility, and branding. Firms engaging in so-called “woke capitalism” signal their virtuous support for progressive social causes favored by both their consumer base and their idealistic young workers. This has become particularly important in a tight labor market: by targeting workers’ values, savvy firms increase recruiting yields, enhance productivity, and reduce training costs as retention rates rise, while …

Criminal Law Minimalisms, Benjamin Levin Jan 2024

Criminal Law Minimalisms, Benjamin Levin

Scholarship@WashULaw

What is criminal law minimalism? At first blush, it appears to be the sober and sensible cousin of abolition. Where the language of abolition is radical and absolute, the language of minimalism speaks to moderation, pragmatism, and nuance. While I appreciate calls for nuance, I’m not sure that minimalism offers the clarity it promises or answers the hard questions about how to address the ills of the U.S. criminal system.

As a theory or label, minimalism raises two major questions: (1) a question of scope; and (2) a question of scale. On the question of scope, what exactly should be …

The Major Questions Doctrine: Unfounded, Unbounded, And Confounded, Ronald M. Levin Jan 2024

The Major Questions Doctrine: Unfounded, Unbounded, And Confounded, Ronald M. Levin

Scholarship@WashULaw

As explicated by the Supreme Court in West Virginia v. EPA in 2022, and reaffirmed in Biden v. Nebraska in 2023, the “major questions doctrine” provides that an administrative agency’s rule in a “major” case must rest on “clear congressional authorization.” Many commentators have deplored the major questions doctrine on the basis of its policy consequences. This Article offers a critique of the doctrine from a different angle. It primarily contends that the reasons the Court has given for enforcing the doctrine do not withstand scrutiny, even on their own terms.

In West Virginia and Nebraska, the Court relied heavily …

Subjective Costs Of Tax Compliance, Jonathan H. Choi, Ariel Jurow Kleiman Jan 2024

Subjective Costs Of Tax Compliance, Jonathan H. Choi, Ariel Jurow Kleiman

Scholarship@WashULaw

This Article introduces and estimates the “subjective costs” of tax compliance, which are costs of tax compliance that people experience directly and individually. To measure these costs, we conducted a survey experiment assessing how much taxpayers would pay to reduce the unpleasantness associated with filing a tax return. The experiment revealed that taxpayers are more concerned about inadvertent mistakes in their tax filings than the time spent on compliance. Respondents also only ascribed meaningful value to eliminating all tax compliance work; they ascribed essentially no value to marginal time savings. Additionally, taxpayers were indifferent between simplification services offered by a …

Lawyering In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Jonathan H. Choi, Monahan Amy, Daniel Schwarcz Jan 2024

Lawyering In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence, Jonathan H. Choi, Monahan Amy, Daniel Schwarcz

Scholarship@WashULaw

We conducted the first randomized controlled trial to study the effect of AI assistance on human legal analysis. We randomly assigned law school students to complete realistic legal tasks either with or without the assistance of GPT-4, tracking how long the students took on each task and blind-grading the results. We found that access to GPT-4 only slightly and inconsistently improved the quality of participants’ legal analysis but induced large and consistent increases in speed. AI assistance improved the quality of output unevenly—where it was useful at all, the lowest-skilled participants saw the largest improvements. On the other hand, AI …

Evaluating Deterministic Approaches To Forecast Population By Educational Attainment In The United States, Wei Gu Jan 2024

Evaluating Deterministic Approaches To Forecast Population By Educational Attainment In The United States, Wei Gu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forecasting population by educational attainment not only benefit government planning on allocating educational resources, labor market demand, and long-term human capital and overall well-being of society (Lutz et al. 2008), but also help predicting size and structure of future population (Lutz and KC 2011). To seek effective method to produce precise results with limited resources, this dissertation compared the Cohort Component Method (CCM) and Hamilton Perry (HP) method to forecast population that are 25 years and older with Associate’s degree and above, and evaluated how factors may impact the accuracy, and how factors interact with each other to influence the …

The Role Of Gender And Age In Shaping Attitudes Towards Childcare And Financial Roles In American Families, Spoorthi Golla Vasantha Narender

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores public attitudes towards parental roles in childcare and financial support, employing Risman’s theory of gender as a social structure as the theoretical framework. Utilizing data from the General Social Survey (GSS) of 2022, the research examines how gender and age influence attitudes about the involvement of mothers and fathers in children’s lives. The analysis reveals significant gendered attitudes. That is, women demonstrate a greater tendency towards supporting equitable sharing of childcare duties and financial responsibilities. Conversely, with men often endorsing traditional roles for mothers as primary caregivers and men as primary financial providers. The study also identifies …

Evaluation Of A Novel Corn Fermented Protein Ingredient, Probiotics, And Postbiotics On Nursery Pig Growth Performance And Gut Health, Juan F. Castillo Zuniga

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Weaning is a necessary step in pig production. After weaning, pigs are subjected to various nutritional, psychological, and environmental stresses. The weaning period is an important period for the intestinal development of the pig. During this time, digestion, immunity, metabolism, and various other aspects of the pig change rapidly. Therefore, providing high-quality feed ingredients is crucial to encourage the newly weaned pig to start consuming solid feed. Two independent studies were conducted to determine if the inclusion of: 1) corn fermented protein (CFP) or 2) probiotics or postbiotics impact nursery pigs' growth performance and gut health. The first experiment utilized …

The Relationship Between Soil Test Phosphorus And Soil Biology - A Natural Management Of Soil Phosphorus Through Conservation Practices, Clarence Frederick Winter Jan 2024

The Relationship Between Soil Test Phosphorus And Soil Biology - A Natural Management Of Soil Phosphorus Through Conservation Practices, Clarence Frederick Winter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phosphorus (P) management is an ongoing challenge in modern agriculture. Due to the importance of P in agriculture, P fertilizer additions are made throughout the U.S. to avoid nutrient-depleted soil. However, the application of P is problematic, as an excess of P in an agricultural system elevates the risk of environmental degradation, and current synthetic P sources are a fleeting resource. Additionally, a majority of P found in agricultural soils are insoluble, in the form of secondary and primary P minerals, making this large pool of P unavailable to plants. Fortunately, soil fungi organisms, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) …

Identification And Characterization Of Three Novel Rumen Bacterial Species In Sheep Fed A Concentrate Diet, Reid Frederick Anema Jan 2024

Identification And Characterization Of Three Novel Rumen Bacterial Species In Sheep Fed A Concentrate Diet, Reid Frederick Anema

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sheep production in the United States is a popular venture for both small farmers and large enterprise owners, as there is a market for end products such as wool and meat. One major factor of raising sheep is nutrition as an adequate diet will allow an animal to reach its full genetic potential for growth. With that in mind, the composition of the diet must be formulated to benefit the animal. Ruminants have the ability to use a variety of plants that are often inedible for humans to create products that humans can consume. These varying feedstuffs, whether they include …

Ecophysiology Of Bradyrhizobium Diazoefficiens Usda 110, Armaan Kaur Sandhu Jan 2024

Ecophysiology Of Bradyrhizobium Diazoefficiens Usda 110, Armaan Kaur Sandhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With increasing demand for soybean, maximizing plant yield is important yiel is dependent on nitrogen availability, but nitrogen fertilizers can meet the plant's needs but have severe environmental impacts. An economically and environmentally sustainable approach is to enhance nitrogen availability through Biological Nitrogen Fixation by symbiotic rhizobia, Bradyrhizobium, an efficient nitrogen fixer for soybean. This symbiosis begins with attachment of rhizobia to legume roots. Root and rhizobia surface properties play a significant role in this attachment. Another major factor affecting root colonization is bacterial competition ability. There is a lack of knowledge on the role of bacterial surface properties, competition …

Role Of Interferon Induced Transmembrane Protein 3 (Ifitm3) And Neural Precursor Cell Expressed Developmentally Down Regulated Protein 4 (Nedd4) In Seneca Virus A (Sva) Replication, Shamiq Aftab Jan 2024

Role Of Interferon Induced Transmembrane Protein 3 (Ifitm3) And Neural Precursor Cell Expressed Developmentally Down Regulated Protein 4 (Nedd4) In Seneca Virus A (Sva) Replication, Shamiq Aftab

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, we studied the role of IFITM3 in SVA replication in vitro by silencing the endogenous IFITM3 in NCI-H1299 cells. An average of 1.94-fold increase in SVA VP2 expression and an average of 4.4-fold increase in supernatant virus titer was observed after 24h SVA isolate SD15-26 infection. We have indeed observed an increase in viral mRNA copies by an average of 5-fold in IFITM3 silenced NCI-H1299 cells at 8 hpi indicating that IFITM3 restricts SVA replication post virus attachment and entry. A positive correlation between interferon-alpha induced IFITM3 upregulation and reduced SVA replication was observed. To further confirm …

An Investigation Of Bidder Behaviour In Wic Infant Formula Rebate Auctions, Ashma Pandey Jan 2024

An Investigation Of Bidder Behaviour In Wic Infant Formula Rebate Auctions, Ashma Pandey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research investigated the competitive bidding dynamics for infant formula rebate contracts within the Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). I begin by focusing on the differences between winning and losing bids. The study employs multiple regression to predict rebate bids submitted by major manufacturers when they win a contract. I next conduct a paired t-test for each manufacturer – revealing statistically significant differences between predicted bids (based on the parameters from the winning model) and actual bids when a manufacturer did not win. This suggests that each manufacturer bids significantly lower rebates (higher net …

Refining The Inverse Lipschitz Constant For Injective Relu Networks, Cole Rausch Jan 2024

Refining The Inverse Lipschitz Constant For Injective Relu Networks, Cole Rausch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we study the Inverse Lipschitz Constant (ILC) of injective ReLU layers. We study the tightness of the ILC lower bound established in Puthawala et al. Our approach has three components. First, we find that the conditions for injectivity on lines yield a weaker condition than the general condition given in Puthawala et al. Second, we perform numerical experiments to judge the tightness of the existing ILC lower bound and find that bound is overly conservative. Third, we identify the source of the potential slack in the proof of the existing ILC bound, and perform further numerical experiments …
