Extraction Of Capsaicin Using The Polyol Induced Extraction (Pie) Method, Orlando Herrera
Extraction Of Capsaicin Using The Polyol Induced Extraction (Pie) Method, Orlando Herrera
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Polyol-induced extraction (PIE) is an extraction technique for separating organic solvents from water, using glycerol and polyol as separating agents. Glycerol binds water releasing the organic solvent as a separate liquid phase. this thesis, investigates how the PIE process may be used to separate caffeine and capsaicin. When acetonitrile and water are used as a 1:1 solvent mixture, two immiscible phases are created upon addition of the polyol, glycerol. Initially, for purposes of training on the PIE method, the studies primarly began with the extraction of pure caffeine. Using a 1:1 mixture of acetonitrile and water, 20 m/v % glycerol, …
Transition To Civilian Life: Exploring That Of The Fewer, The Prouder, And Female Marine, Glenisha Foreman
Transition To Civilian Life: Exploring That Of The Fewer, The Prouder, And Female Marine, Glenisha Foreman
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Female Marine veterans are a group that intersects two at-risk populations, Marines and female veterans, and the potential struggles associated with them. Marine veterans have among the highest rates of suicide after transition, as well as one of the highest military sexual trauma (MST) rates. Studies indicate that women veterans are at risk for intimate partner violence (IPV), housing instability, and PTSD. Additionally, various social factors impact female veterans, such as a lack of familial support. There are many studies on the overall transitional experiences of the military and even some that evaluate experiences of female service members, but information …
Protective Factors Among Native Born And Immigrant Undergraduate And Graduate Students Enrolled In American Colleges: Predictive Validity Of Acculturation, Family Involvement, Academic Persistence, Grit, And Sense Of Belonging, Agnieszka Tulowiecka
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Achieving higher education goals and becoming acculturated to the social and economic values of the U.S. is critical for the success of immigrants. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, immigrants are estimated to account for 93% of the nation's workforce population growth over the next three decades (Pew, 2013). However, much of the existing empirical work on postsecondary outcomes among immigrant youth mainly focuses on the challenges and deficits faced by this group, as well as differences between racial/ethnic categories. This This emphasis might potentially mask within-group differences (e.g., ethnic/regional variations) that arise from unique pre- and …
Finding Harmony: The Lived Experiences Of African Americans Who Have Participated In Emotionally Focused Therapy, Jennifer R. Young
Finding Harmony: The Lived Experiences Of African Americans Who Have Participated In Emotionally Focused Therapy, Jennifer R. Young
All Student Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of African Americans who have participated in emotionally focused therapy (EFT) within the past 2 years. Despite EFT's recognized effectiveness in fostering secure attachments and emotional expressiveness among distressed couples, there is a significant gap in research concerning its application within the African American community. This study addressed this gap by examining the personal narratives of six African American individuals, focusing on how EFT influenced their emotional expression and interpersonal relationships. The research identified four prominent themes: Transformation and Growth, Initial Apprehension and Fear, Cultural Sensitivity and Therapeutic Alliance, and Normalization and …

An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Counselors Who Integrate Spirituality And Religion Into Therapy With African American Clients: A Phenomenological Study, Curissa Sutherland-Smith
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Spirituality is important when it comes to a client's identity, mental health functioning, treatment planning, recovery, and prevention work. However, in the United States, there tends to be a separation between the sacred and the secular. Integrating spirituality within the therapeutic setting is among counselor education and professional practices' most challenging and misunderstood areas (Stebnicki, 2017). A phenomenological qualitative design was used to collect data from participants. The study allowed licensed clinical professional counselors to discuss their experiences related to how they incorporate spirituality into their counseling sessions and how their perception and experience with the Black/African American community impacted …

Structure Identification For High-Dimensional Data In The Vicinity Of Bear Lake, Ben Shaw, Haley Burger, Brennan L. Bean, Kevin R. Moon
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
This report focuses on seven water quality measurements taken at 43 different depths on the Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho for the months of June - November in the years 2018 - 2023. These measurements create a high-dimensional dataset on which we apply state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) techniques to look for low-dimensional structure in the data. A similar effort was made for weather measurements taken near the lake. Our analysis reveals that water quality measurements tend to cluster (i.e., group together) by year, while weather measurements tend to cluster by time of the year. This in mind, we explore potential drivers of …
One's Health Versus One's Right To Vote: How The Covid-19 Pandemic Changed The Legal Landscape Of Absentee/Mail-In Voting In The United States From The 2020-2024 Election Cycles, Tracey B. Carter
Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines how the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the legal framework governing absentee and mail-in voting in the United States from 2020 through the 2024 election cycles. Through a comprehensive review of state statutes, election data, and litigation across multiple jurisdictions, the Article analyzes pre-pandemic absentee voting regimes, emergency modifications implemented during the 2020 election cycle, and post-pandemic developments in 2022 and 2024. It compares states that required an excuse for absentee voting with those adopting no-excuse or all-mail systems and evaluates the surge in mail-in ballot usage during the pandemic. The Article further surveys significant state-level lawsuits challenging absentee/mail-in …
The Prognostic Impact Of Various Circulating Cytokine Levels On Response To Egfr-Tkis Treatment In Advanced Nsclc Patients, Warissara Khuntharuks
The Prognostic Impact Of Various Circulating Cytokine Levels On Response To Egfr-Tkis Treatment In Advanced Nsclc Patients, Warissara Khuntharuks
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Advanced NSCLC patients are routinely treated with EGFR-TKIs but often eventually develop acquired resistance, influenced by circulating cytokines. This study investigated cytokine associations with disease control in EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients (N=123) by analyzing plasma samples at pre-treatment and 6–12 weeks post-treatment using a 27-bioplex cytokine panel, compared with healthy controls (N=30). Patients were classified as durable responders (16.3%) (PFS ≥ 104 weeks) and non-durable responders (83.7%) (PFS<104 weeks). Notably, IL-1Ra, IL2, IL-6, IL-7, IL-12p(70), TNF- alpha, IL-4, IL-5, IL-8, IL-13, Eotaxin, IP-10, MIP-1 alpha, RANTES, Basic FGF, GM-CSF and PDGF-BB were significantly presented with high levels in the patient’s pre-treatment plasma compared to healthy controls (p<0.05). High IL-6 and IL-10 levels were significant in non-durable responders (p = 0.0076 and p = 0.0166, respectively). At second-time points, non-durable responders exhibited significantly lower IL-6 levels (p=0.0019), whereas durable responders showed increased IL-10 (p = 0.0234). High pre-treatment IL-6 correlated with poor PFS (p=0.018), OS (p<0.001), and TTF (p<0.001). Consistently, high IL-10 was also correlated with shorter TTF (p<0.005). IL-6 and IL-10 showed strong diagnostic performance (AUC with 0.755 and 0.738, respectively). These cytokines may serve as prognostic biomarkers for evaluating durable EGFR-TKI responses in NSCLC patients.

Poster Presentations
Introduction: Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS) Syndrome is a recently recognized adult-onset autoinflammatory disease that can lead to potentially lifethreatening multi-system inflammation with estimated prevalence of up to 1 in 5,000 males over the age of 50. Given its significant morbidity and mortality and high prevalence, increased awareness of this condition is of foremost importance. Herein we outline a case of VEXAS syndrome. Case Presentation: Mr. N is a 73-year-old male with a past medical history significant for hypertension and recent episode of uveitis who first presented to the hospital for significant unintentional weight loss, fevers, and abdominal …

Judges And The Regulatory State: Trends Of Resistance And Restraint, Luke Norris
Law Faculty Publications
The last great confrontation between courts and the regulatory state occurred at the turn of the previous century. As courts in the first decades of the twentieth century resisted regulatory laws designed to protect workers and curb market excesses, they sustained broad legal and public critique, including claims that they were guardians of corporate power and monied and propertied interests. The showdown, as is familiar fare, was seemingly resolved in the New Deal, with the Supreme Court and judiciary largely accepting the constitutionality of federal and state regulatory laws. The compromise that emerged, dubbed the “New Deal settlement,” ostensibly called …

Developing robust professional networks can help shape the trajectories of early career scientists. Yet, historical inequities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields make access to these networks highly variable across academic programmes, and senior academics often have little time for mentoring. Here, we illustrate the success of a virtual Laboratory Meeting Programme (LaMP). In this programme, we matched students (mentees) with a more experienced scientist (mentors) from a research group. The mentees then attended the mentors’ laboratory meetings during the academic year with two laboratory meetings specifically dedicated to the mentee’s professional development. Survey results indicate that mentees …

Orthodoxy In Ukraine: Strategies Of Reconciliation, Tetiana Havryliuk, Yuriy Chornomorets, Vasyl Lozovytskyi
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article analyzes the inter-Orthodox conflict in Ukraine in the context of the search for ways of reconciliation. The path to reconciliation is shown to be a fundamental Christian principle capable of overcoming serious reasons for enmity and hatred, as has been repeatedly demonstrated in history. The potential of the concept of "open Orthodoxy" in the formation of a new culture of inter-Christian dialogue and coexistence is revealed, the implementation of which can ensure Ukraine not only the unity of Ukrainian Orthodoxy, but also the unity of the Ukrainian people. The role of the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious …
Popular Constitutionalism Inside The Courts: The Search For Popular Meaning, Thomas G. Donnelly
Popular Constitutionalism Inside The Courts: The Search For Popular Meaning, Thomas G. Donnelly

While commentators celebrate (or lament) the rise of originalism on the Roberts Court, another theory may prove as important to the future of constitutional law: popular constitutionalism. In a range of recent cases, Justices from across the ideological spectrum have proven themselves open to using sources of popular authority to address important constitutional issues. This is especially true of the two Justices at the Roberts Court’s ideological center: John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh. Even so, the question remains how best to make popular constitutionalism work inside the courts. This question has vexed popular constitutionalists since the theory’s inception. In my …
Reimagining The Deduction For Employee Compensation, Daniel Schaffa
Reimagining The Deduction For Employee Compensation, Daniel Schaffa

U.S. businesses pay trillions of dollars in employee compensation, a substantial fraction of which is deductible for tax purposes. This deduction reduces the taxable income of businesses, ultimately lowering business tax burdens by hundreds of billions of dollars. With a few exceptions, the tax code confers the same deduction to a business for every dollar of employee compensation, regardless of whether that compensation goes to an employee earning millions or an employee earning minimum wage. This is consistent with a pure Haig-Simons income tax, under which any business expense incurred ought to be deductible dollar-for-dollar. But many, if not most, …
Protecting Minority Representation In An Era Of Political Polarization And The Hollowing Out Of Voting Rights Protections, Henry L. Chambers, Jr.
Protecting Minority Representation In An Era Of Political Polarization And The Hollowing Out Of Voting Rights Protections, Henry L. Chambers, Jr.

The United States Supreme Court has hollowed out various voting rights protections, leaving all voters—minority and nonminority—less protected in a politically polarized America. Surprisingly, the Court has continued to protect representation for minority race voters who live in racially polarized areas. However, minority race voters risk losing that protection, typically provided through majority-minority districts authorized under the Voting Rights Act, if they build cross-racial coalitions with their neighbors. Under the Court’s interpretation of the VRA, cross-racial voting coalitions may be less protected than local majorities comprised of a single race of voters. The loss of such protection could leave their …

Effect Of Pgi And Edd Gene Deletion In Escherichia Coli K12 On Production Of Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate) And Copolymer Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate-Co-3-Hydroxyvalerate), Jittakan Pachimsawat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The biomaterial poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a promising alternative renewable and green polymer. In this research, we incorporated deletion of phosphogluconate dehydratase (edd) and phosphoglucose isomerase (pgi) in E. coli for PHB production for the first time. As a result, the edd mutant harboring pBSKCABA-04 reached the highest PHB production of 93.0%wt with 7.55 g/L PHB concentration at 30 hours of cultivation. A specific production rate of 0.21 h-1 and maximum productivity of 0.25 g/L.h were obtained using glucose as a sole carbon source. On the other hand, deletion of pgi gene only recovered the cell growth but did not promote …
