Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Hypertension ranks among the top ten causes of mortality, with around 4% attributed to hypertensive complications. High salt intake, Type 2 diabetes, smoking, elevated serum lipids, a sedentary lifestyle, a diet heavy in saturated fat, genetic predisposition, as well as stress are among the factors that contribute to hypertension. Hypertension affects about 1 billion people worldwide, with considerable differences between populations and ethnic groups [2]. The Framingham Heart Study indicates that a person's lifetime risk of developing hypertension is 90% if they are normotensive at age 55. According to the NHANES IV (4th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey), the …

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is one of the foremost causes of community acquired pneumonia. Most of the cases are, however mild. Although, complications may seldom occur. One such known complication of M. pneumoniae infection is cold agglutinin hemolysis, which is usually benign and transient. This hemolysis is due to formation of cold agglutinins during the course of infection. Cold Agglutination Syndrome (CAS) is a type of acquired Autoimmune Hemolytic Anaemia (AIHA), which exists due to an underlying disorder, like a viral illness or lymohoid malignancy. It is generally self-remitting, in contrast to Cold Agglutination Disease (CAD), which is a chronic …

Laryngospasm is the sustained closure of the vocal cords resulting in partial or complete loss of airway patency. Among the several causes of laryngospasm, history of total thyroidectomy performed several years back, though reported, is a rare occurrence. We present here the case report of a lady with an uneventful intra operative course of a laparoscopic cholecystectomy who developed stridor and laryngospasm in the immediate post operative period. Evaluation revealed unilateral vocal cord palsy and hypocalcemia. Compensated unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and asymptomatic hypocalcemia can exist in patients who have undergone total thyroidectomy and can result in stridor several …
Associations Between Parenting Factors, Self-Efficacy, And Physical Activity Levels In Overweight African American Adolescents, Noelle Mink
Senior Theses
While there is extensive research on physical activity (PA) and the role it plays in preventing obesity, African American populations remain understudied despite reporting lower levels of PA compared to White Americans. Particularly, PA in adolescence has several indications for the development of healthy adult lifestyles. Additionally, there is limited data on the relationship between parenting factors and adolescent PA in overweight African American adolescents, despite theories that suggest that authoritative parenting factors, such as demandingness (e.g., control, monitoring) and responsiveness (e.g., warmth), can influence adolescent behaviors, including their motivation and self-efficacy for engaging in PA. Confidence in one’s ability …

Remote sensing datasets usually have a wide range of spatial and spectral resolutions. They provide unique advantages in surveillance systems, and many government organizations use remote sensing multispectral imagery to monitor security-critical infrastructures or targets. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has advanced rapidly in recent years and has been widely applied to remote image analysis, achieving state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. However, AI models are vulnerable and can be easily deceived or poisoned. A malicious user may poison an AI model by creating a stealthy backdoor. A backdoored AI model performs well on clean data but behaves abnormally when a planted trigger appears in …

Adversarial Training Based Domain Adaptation Of Skin Cancer Images, Syed Qasim Gilani, Muhammad Umair, Maryam Naqvi, Oge Marques, Hee-Cheol Kim
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Skin lesion datasets used in the research are highly imbalanced; Generative Adversarial Networks can generate synthetic skin lesion images to solve the class imbalance problem, but it can result in bias and domain shift. Domain shifts in skin lesion datasets can also occur if different instruments or imaging resolutions are used to capture skin lesion images. The deep learning models may not perform well in the presence of bias and domain shift in skin lesion datasets. This work presents a domain adaptation algorithm-based methodology for mitigating the effects of domain shift and bias in skin lesion datasets. Six experiments were …

Increasing Parent Faith Engagement At A Parish School, Grace Mazza Urbanski
Journal of Catholic Education
Increasing faith engagement among Catholic school shareholders is a priority for school leaders. Catholic school communities can learn from this year-long project with a parish school. Sacred Heart Parish School serves approximately 300 K3-8th grade students. Like many parish schools, Sacred Heart sees a growing number of parents disengaged with the faith life of the parish and school, despite 98% of them being registered parishioners. The parent population enjoys robust and regular social activities, but report they are uncomfortable or uninterested in faith activities. The mission of Sacred Heart Parish School is to nurture “children’s growth in the Catholic faith,” …

Teacher Faith Formation As Response To An “Existential Crisis” In Catholic Schools: Western Canadian Superintendents’ Perspectives, Matt Hoven, Dean Sarnecki, Eugenia Pagotta-Kowalczyk
Journal of Catholic Education
The shortage of teachers who can strongly identify with the religious mission of Catholic schools is at the point of an “existential crisis,” according to a system leader in Catholic schools in Western Canada. Drawing upon exploratory interviews completed with ten chief superintendents (who oversee large school districts), this paper reveals that while school districts offer various forms of faith formation regulating the personal lives of teachers amidst divergences between Church doctrines and social trends is complicated. Because the complexity of teacher faith formation is incredibly difficult to address, we discuss three key areas to renew the state of affairs: …

The Model Of Desire And Fear As An Invariant In Literature, Melake Agasaf Elyasova-Rajabova
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The issue of the projection of the desire and fear model in literature is analyzed from different perspectives in this research. Desire and fear along with forming a dichotomy together, complement each other. Sometimes the feeling of fear turns into a barrier in front of the feeling of desire, whereas, the feeling of fear sometimes saves him (her) from taking some wrong steps. Humans are born as biological beings, but they are formed as social beings. Each person is formed through the relationship between the individual and society; he acts taking into account the stereotypes of the society - the …
Linguistic Quips As The Soul Of Satire In Abu’S Subversive Political Cartoons, Neha Khurana
Linguistic Quips As The Soul Of Satire In Abu’S Subversive Political Cartoons, Neha Khurana
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The effectiveness of satirical political cartoons, especially in times of strict censorship, may be explained through their use of linguistic quips that complement the brevity and immediacy of the visual medium well. Several techniques within linguistic quips may be understood through the theories of Henri Bergson and Arthur Koestler that are drawn upon in this paper. However, it is through an analysis of the subjects and objects of these linguistic quips that we understand the subversive nature of the laughter produced through these quips. Linguistic quips, in addition to providing at least a minor, though inconsistent, protection from censorious authorities …

Fgf5, Evelyn A Carrion, Malcolm M Moses, Richard R Behringer
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
FGF5 functions as a negative regulator of the hair cycle in mammals. It is expressed in the outer root sheath of hair follicles during the late anagen phase of the hair cycle. It functions as a signaling molecule, mediating the transition of the anagen growth phase to catagen regression phase of the hair cycle. Spontaneous and engineered FGF5 mutations in mammalian animal models result in long hair phenotypes. In humans, inherited FGF5 mutations result in trichomegaly (long eyelashes). Knockdown of fgf5 in zebrafish embryos results in inner ear alterations. Alterations in FGF5 expression are also associated with various human pathologies.
