Takeout Or Delivery? Reoperation Rates In Lower Extremity Long Bone Osteomyelitis Treated With Debridement And Local Antibiotic Delivery Systems, Nolan M. Reinhart, Jackson P. Tate, Jacob S. Budin, Julianna E. Winter, Olivia C. Lee, William F. Sherman

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and treatment of osteomyelitis is essential to prevent potential complications including sepsis, extensive bone resection, amputation, and death. Despite current treatment strategies for management of osteomyelitis, recurrence rates reported in the literature are upwards of 25 %. Current evidence comparing the efficacy of differing surgical treatments of osteomyelitis is inconclusive. The purpose of this study is to compare rates of re-debridement and amputation in patients who receive either debridement alone or debridement with placement of local antibiotic delivery systems as initial treatment for lower extremity long bone osteomyelitis. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed to investigate …

BackgroundThe prospect of neuroprotective treatments for Parkinsons disease highlights the need for early diagnostic tests. Specialised MRI sequences suggest changes related to Parkinsons disease may be detectable. ObjectivesWe used the Parkinsons Progression Markers Initiative dataset to investigate whether deep learning can detect early brain MRI changes of idiopathic and GBA/LRRK2 prodromal Parkinsons disease. MethodsPairs of matched cohorts were used to train convolutional neural networks to classify T2 axial images. Explainability methods were used to visualise drivers of model predictions. ResultsModels built to distinguish between idiopathic Parkinsons disease scans (n=504) and matched controls exhibited good classification performance for scans taken more …

A Family Affair: Family And Feminism In Contemporary Irish Women's Fiction, Mary Ryan Nov 2024

A Family Affair: Family And Feminism In Contemporary Irish Women's Fiction, Mary Ryan

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Despite the fact that the contemporary women’s fiction genre of chick lit is most commonly considered in terms of its apparent focus on romantic relationships, this paper suggests that these are not the only relationships that chick lit heroines embark on. Examining a selection of specifically Irish chick lit novels, this paper explores how they present Irish families in the twenty f irst century, and discusses the genre’s demonstration of how the notion of “family” is changing for many Irish women who, no longer secluded and repressed within the home as many Irish women once were, now increasingly f ind …

Gender Perspectives In Contemporary Eco-Theology, Metti Amirtham

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Despite several decades of research and education programs, humanity continues to deplete natural resources and pollute the ecosystem of the planet at an alarming rate. Given the widespread secular engagement with environmental issues, i am conscious of the crucial need for Christian theologians to take on board the scale and extent of the development of eco-theology right across the globe from within their own traditions. in this process of brewing theology, gender perspectives play a vital role, because, gender is an integral component of every aspect of the lives of individuals and societies. Moreover, there are important connections between the …

Developing An Ir Venn Diagram: Exploring Diversity And Similarities In Specialized Institutional Repositories– A Discussion, A Self-Survey, And A Poster, Ramune Kubilius

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium

How do academic library IRs support their institutions’ diverse goals? In early 2024, a group of six librarians assembled virtually to explore and reflect on the academic IR community that encompasses specialized libraries, collections, and formats. Group members represented various sectors, including medicine, science, technology, engineering, music, and large university. They were brought together by their common interests and involvement in several repository initiatives, including two virtual symposia, MIRL (https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/mirl/) and NIRD (https://repository.escholarship.umassmed.edu/pages/nird_about). The motivating purpose was to submit a proposal to the Special Libraries Association (SLA) 2024 annual conference, a venue where not all attendees may be familiar with …

Using Searchrxiv For Depositing Evidence Syntheses Searches, Hannah J. Craven, Rachel J. Hinrichs, Julia C. Stumpff

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium

Librarians build detailed search strategies for evidence syntheses enabling the comprehensive retrieval of studies while taking care that no relevant studies are missed. However, this work may be wasted or lost if the review does not reach publication or if the search strategies are not included with the publication. Further, search strategies that are stored in article appendices may not be preserved in the long-term. To address these problems, we started depositing our evidence syntheses search strategies that we developed to a repository called searchRxiv (pronounced “search archive”); an open repository established by CABI Digital Library to support information professionals …

A Dental Archive For All: Building A Shared Repository For The Ada’S Tripartite Membership System, Alisun Dekock, Ellen Thieme

Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries (MIRL) Symposium

The American Dental Association has a three-part membership format, comprised of hundreds of state and local membership societies connected by the ADA national office. These ADA societies serve the unique needs of their regional member dentists, including information sharing through publication of journals and newsletters. Scholarly, peer-reviewed clinical research published within ADA society journals is dispersed and not indexed in a central location. To address this difficulty in access, last year the ADA’s Library & Archives launched ADA Commons, an open access repository devoted solely to knowledge sharing across the global dental community. Hosted by Digital Commons, ADA Commons allows …

Journal of Global Catholicism

This article offers an interdisciplinary study of the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain during World War II in order to provide an historical resource for understanding the global dimensions and possibilities at work in modern Catholicism. In 1941, while living in New York City, Maritain helped to cofound and lead the École Libre des Hautes Études (the “Free French University”). An initiative primarily created by American and French intellectuals, the university became an important hub for rescuing and employing nearly two hundred individuals from across the world. Elected president in late-1942, Maritain worked closely with the New School for Social …

The Meanings Of The Hospital De San Lázaro In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Francis Galasi Nov 2024

The Meanings Of The Hospital De San Lázaro In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Francis Galasi

Journal of Global Catholicism

The Hospital de San Lázaro was a specialized health facility in the early modern Philippines, dedicated to the care of lepers and sufferers of other contagious diseases. While it was established for this specific purpose, its role in colonial society varied. This versatility reflected the distinct priorities and commitments of the groups pulled into its orbit, as each charged San Lázaro with a unique meaning. This article explores how and why these groups—the indigenous Filipinos, the Spanish residents and the Discalced Franciscans—understood San Lázaro in their own way. It highlights the ability of fixed institutions, such as a hospital, to …

Food Safety, Livestock Health, And Productivity Of A Layer Farm Following Implementation Of A Certified Haccp System In Japan, Hiroshi Akaike, Makoto Nagai, Tomomitsu Alexandre Okatani, Sumalee Boonmar, Yukio Morita

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study examined the safety and productivity of a layer farm over a 3-year period following the implementation of a farm Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system in 2019. The critical control point was “automatic egg collection” and no deviations from critical limits were observed, indicating the eggs were safe. In addition, the egg production rate increased and the feed conversion rate decreased. In contrast, the viability after the introduction of a farm HACCP system, in which the replenishment of new hens was discontinued after forced molting, showed an increasing trend. These results suggest that the HACCP system …
