An Investigation Into The Perceptions Of Female Employees In The Abu Dhabi Government Sector On The Relationship Between Work And Family Life And Its Effect On Their Well-Being, Mouza Mohamed Alqubaisi
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
Due to a radical shift in the employee’s workforce interests, work-life balance (WLB) with its several policies and theoretical implications, has gained importance over the years. This study examines the interaction between family responsibilities and work duties, how it influences women's well-being and the impact this has on work performance, personal well-being and private life. The study applies a theoretical framework that combines elements of Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory and Resource Conservation Theory (COR) to highlight how these women deal with and relate to significant work-family imbalances reflected in their personal well-being. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 senior female …

Influence Of Acute High-Intensity Resistance Exercise On Cognitive Performance And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygenation In Recreational Weightlifters, Samuel M. Camacho, Terence Moriarty, Mick G. Mack, Jacob P. Reed, Hyeyoung Cho
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology
Acute exercise has been shown to be effective in improving post-exercise cognitive performance, including executive function. In addition, changes in prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation have been linked to any such improvements. Since resistance and higher intensity exercise is much less studied, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of high-intensity resistance exercise on cognitive performance and to determine if PFC activation was related to this cognitive performance in recreationally trained weightlifters. Ten (M = 5, F = 5) college aged (22 ± 2 years) recreationally trained weightlifters completed the Stroop task prior to and 15- and 30-min …

A Journey To Zambia…A Journey Into Myself, Alison Greenwood
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
After returning from a service trip to Zambia, Africa during the summer of 2009, Alison was inspired to take time for herself and to reflect on her experiences abroad. She enrolled in an independent study with Jake Diaz, Vice President for Student Development at Seattle University, which afforded her the opportunity to look at her own development in graduate school and begin a journey of self-discovery. As part of her independent study, Alison created a lengthy Scholarly Personal Narrative and she has taken pieces from that narrative to create this publication for Magis. The following paper draws on experiences from …

This poem is in reflection to the work done by all professionals in higher education. It is a calling for us to acknowledge the needs and potentials of the students we are working with. To remember in the slow changing systems of higher education we have as much to learn, if not more, as we have to teach.

Development Of Novel Nanobiocatalysts For Enhancing Carbon Dioxide Capture, Merna Tarek Farag
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
The emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere cause a climate change that has devastating impacts. Therefore, reaching the net zero goal, which is the balance between the amount of greenhouse gas emitted to the atmosphere and that removed from it, is critical for the future of our planet unless the net-zero goal is achieved soon, the impacts of climate change will continue to worsen, with severe consequences for ecosystems, human health, and global security. Achieving this goal requires a fundamental shift in the way we produce and consume energy, including the rapid transition to renewable energy sources with improvements …

Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal known to be associated with various health issues, including cancer. Elevated blood cadmium levels can be a concern and may require medical evaluation and intervention. Some studies describing the etiology of cancer have focused on heavy metals, however, there is little information available for uterine cancer. This study assessed the levels of cadmium in the serum of 60 women with benign and malignant uterine tumors. Blood samples were obtained and analyzed using FAAS spectrometry in Najaf City, Iraq. Serum cadmium levels exhibited higher concentration in patients with malignant uterine tumors than those with benign …

The public knows about the importance of triage in the hospital emergency setting, but few are aware of this term in institutions of higher learning. Triage is simply matching students with priority order of resources most needed (Merriam Webster, 2023). Faculty can be the first line of defense or first responders in the classroom to provide students the help they need before escalation ensues. The focus of this article was to review the need for additional faculty training to ensure professors are part of students’ “network of care” (Sarraf, 2021). Disruptive student behavior is easy to detect in the classroom …

Acceptable Forms Of State Aid To Airlines During The Covid-19 Pandemic (Part I), Jadwiga Urban-Kozłowska
internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)
The goal of this paper is to analyze the application of two types of State aid, namely exceptional aid (Article 107(2)(b) TFEU) and anti-crisis aid (Article 107(3)(b) TFEU), which played a key role in the process of supporting air carriers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This will allow us to compare these types of aid, and to answer the question of their significance and usefulness in the context of supporting air carriers, and more broadly other undertakings, during exceptional occurrences such as COVID-19. The criteria for each of these exemptions will be discussed separately, and theoretical considerations will be accompanied by …
Blue Bahay: More Than A Place To Play, Damien Roiland
Blue Bahay: More Than A Place To Play, Damien Roiland
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
How can we enable disadvantaged youth, whose past and present are unstructured, to (re)build themselves and start thinking about their future? The incredibly effective solution developed by the Delépine Foundation is to let them play! Playing is most often downgraded to a mere form of entertainment. However, it has proven to be essential for education. With a limited budget, the Delépine Foundation (through Aurore Prudent-Roiland) created Blue Bahay, a play center for street and slum children in the Philippines. Through play, young people heal their psychological wounds and increase their resilience. They discover the joy of learning with results that …

Healing Historic Memories, Thomas Menamparampil
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The history and reality of violence ceaselessly plagues communities all over the world. There is no history book and news agency that lacks a piece on violence. Retaliations and reactions as a result of fear and anger quickly turn to violence whether it is protecting one’s boundaries from invaders, fighting for one’s rights, or even the simple prioritizing of the self over the other. Narratives of protection from violence through violence have been (dangerously) immortalized through the collective memory of these injuries that are relived through both myth and history, promoting the conqueror/conquered and hero(ine)/victim narrative and cultivating prejudice. Despite …

Sanut, Wayawaya, And The Naimbag A Biag In Ilokano Philosophy, Aurelio S. Agcaoili
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The essay articulates the fundamental connection of some of the basic concepts in Ilokano ethos as lived in the everyday in order to understand the basic contradictions of the Ilokano way of being in the world (Ilokano ontology), of being in a society marked by good intentions but evil practices. The notion of the good life as a political concept is explored, and its connection to knowledge (Ilokano epistemology) and freedom is established.
Sustaining Temporal Peace: A Worldview For Sustainable Living Inspired By Saint Augustine's Philosophy, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria
Sustaining Temporal Peace: A Worldview For Sustainable Living Inspired By Saint Augustine's Philosophy, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
My paper aims to use the philosophical resources of Saint Augustine’s thought, particularly as found in the City of God, in order to sketch a basic worldview which can educate and lead people towards living lives that promote sustainable development. Specifically, I wish to show how Saint Augustine’s concepts of order, rightly ordered love, and temporal peace can serve as material to create a rough metaphysical framework in which human beings are understood to be an integrated part of a greater whole which is the earth. The ethical corollary of this framework is that human beings should act in such …

Nakaparsuaan, Kadagaan, And Panaglunit Ti Daga: Climate Justice And Environmental Ethics In Ilokano Life, Aurelio S. Agcaoili
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
The work offers an interpretation of the world as understood and being lived until today by Ilokanos. Such a reading involves the plumbing into linguistic and cultural data as proofs of an inchoate philosophy that has been preserved in the minds of the Ilokano people and which continues to guide their conduct. The world, understood as the physical environment, peoples, and communities, is linked back to the problem of social justice and stewardship of living and nonliving things, to the issue of who calls the shots in the unethical exploitation of these resources, and to the lessons that can be …

Speech emotion recognition (SER) is an emerging technology that utilizes speech sounds to identify a speaker’s emotional state. Computational intelligence is receiving increasing attention from academics, health, and social media applications. This research was conducted to identify emotional states in verbal communication. We applied a publicly available dataset called RAVDEES. The data augmentation process involved adding noise, applying time stretching, shifting, and pitch, and extracting the features zero cross rate (ZCR), chroma shift, Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC), and a spectrogram. In addition, we used many pretrained deep learning models, such as VGG16, ResNet50, Xception, InceptionV3, and DenseNet121. Out of all …

Reconsidering The Need For Intraoperative Frozen Section In Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy For Early Breast Cancer In Bahrain, Ahmed Z. Salman, Noora F. Ali, Ali H. Abdulla, Sarah J. Alaraibi, Fatema A. Alkhabbaz, Maryam Hammad, Hussain A. Abdulla
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Frozen section is performed in sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for early breast cancer to prevent a second surgery, but it has certain disadvantages. Several trials have demonstrated the oncological safety of avoiding axillary dissection in patients with 1–2 positive nodes. This study aimed to assess the need for frozen section during SLNB in early breast cancer. Methods: This retrospective study included patients with early-stage clinically node-negative breast cancer who underwent SLNB with frozen section at Salmaniya Medical Complex, Manama, Bahrain, between October 2021 and September 2023. Patients who had neoadjuvant chemotherapy, cT3-4 tumours, ductal carcinoma in situ, …

Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is a rare progressive myopathy affecting individuals older than 50 years. It is associated with significant morbidity by restricting the patient's mobility and it has a relatively low mortality risk with respiratory muscles involvement. Muscle biopsy is the gold standard method for diagnosis. We report a 72-year-old female patient who was admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman, in 2023 with progressive weakness of lower limbs. Various diagnostic tests were performed and the patient was subsequently diagnosed with IBM. The patient was treated with methylprednisolone, immunoglobulins, rituximab and prednisolone; this resulted in moderate clinical …
