Exploring Staff Nurses’ Perceptions Of Nursing Student Enculturation Within Clinical Teaching: A Focused Ethnography, Larizza Limjuco Woodruff

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The traditional clinical education model in nursing has utilized on-site learning experiences in clinical settings with patient encounters. With the growing complexity and demands of contemporary nursing care today, it is imperative to question the principal assumptions that guide the design and use of traditional clinical teaching experiences. Staff nurses working with nursing students can illuminate the impact of sociocultural workplace factors on clinical teaching and learning when preparing students for practice. Yet there is little known about staff nurses’ perspectives of nursing culture and how enculturation prepares nursing students for the profession. By understanding the perceptions of enculturation among …

Peer Led Learning Curriculum On Sexual Education, Hannah Harris Dec 2024

Peer Led Learning Curriculum On Sexual Education, Hannah Harris

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sexual education is a necessary course that teaches students about health and safety. There have been many obstacles that educators have faced in implementing into schools. This has led to a statewide division in how the topic is taught. Because of this, gaps in students' knowledge can lead to harmful practices or actions. A comprehensive sex ed, or CSE, needs to be utilized across the United States as this curriculum focuses on empirically based evidence and facts. Having an unbiased curriculum will improve student’s knowledge and help prevent parent backlash. However, sex ed needs to embrace peer-led learning as many …

Using Neighborhood Information To Improve Fiber Direction Estimation From Neuroimaging Data, Anjan Mandal Dec 2024

Using Neighborhood Information To Improve Fiber Direction Estimation From Neuroimaging Data, Anjan Mandal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Accurately estimating neuronal fiber directions is crucial in neuroimaging analysis. The Ball-and-Stick Model (BSM), introduced by Behrens et al. (2003), and widely used in software tools like FSL, remains one of the most popular models for this purpose. BSM analyzes each voxel individually, based solely on its signal information. In this dissertation, we propose modifications to BSM, that incorporate signal information from neighboring voxels in the estimation process, potentially improving the accuracy of the estimates. Additionally, within the estimation process, we introduce two novel proposal distributions to enhance the efficiency of the Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling procedure on the simplex …

Self-Regulated Learning Through Self-Concordant Goals, Social Modeling And Sustainability Focus, Oana Mandrutiu-Iancu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Research has shown that when students spend time reflecting and autonomously selecting their college goals, they show high intrinsic motivation, low extrinsic motivation and improvement in emotional and social adjustment over the first several months of college. Despite of this, it is estimated that 77% of first- and second-year students are undecided on their major and many remain undecided as they transition into their junior and senior year. Moreover, in education settings the primary emphasis is on academic success, but focusing solely on academic goals is limiting. As learning is inherently social, academic and social domains cannot be separated, while …

Alteration Of Peripheral Cytokines In Alzheimer’S Disease, Zhengshi Yang

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with the clinical symptoms of gradual cognitive decline and memory loss. Biologically, abnormal accumulation of Aβ (Aβ) plaque and tau tangles in the brain are the core pathological hallmarks in AD. Although inflammatory response is not specific to AD, emerging evidence suggests that the disrupted innate immune system within the central nervous system, particularly microglial activation, might act as the bridge linking Aβ aggregation to pathological phosphorylation and aggregation of tau. The inflammatory response was suggested to initially have a neuroprotective role of attempting to clear Aβ plaques, and then become neurotoxic …

Ministry has a variety of fields ranging from churches, social nonprofit organizations, and government ministries in agriculture, health, education, lands, and many more. While this study did not focus on other ministries apart from Christian non profit ministries like church, to some extent, all leaders in these ministries avow that one requires some level of education to be in leading positions in these ministries. In other words, the qualified individual must have been trained in a particular field within the ministry of interest. This indicates the importance of education in ministry. Therefore, this study was conducted to uncover the impact …

Distribution Through Taxation Versus Legal Rules, And The Epistemic Limits Of Law-And-Economics, Erick J. Sam Dec 2024

Distribution Through Taxation Versus Legal Rules, And The Epistemic Limits Of Law-And-Economics, Erick J. Sam

Utah Law Review

This Article develops an epistemic critique of the view, widely held in law-and-economics, that legal rules should always be chosen for efficiency and that redistribution to produce a fair distribution should be conducted solely through the tax-and-transfer system. In place of this orthodox view, I develop an alternative distributive theory.

The canonical ‘double distortion’ argument for the orthodox position, formulated by Kaplow and Shavell (1994), claims that opting for efficient legal rules minimizes economic distortions and maximizes aggregate social wealth, some of which can then be redistributed via the tax-and-transfer system to those who would have been better off under …

Cmos-Based Rotational Spectroscopy: Massive Spectral Fingerprint Generation And Molecular Detection With Deep Learning, Yasamin Fozouni

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Rotational Spectroscopy is a powerful spectral fingerprinting approach that can be used for identifying different gas molecules in a sample. Gas molecules are free to rotate, with inertia, in fixed states of quantized energy. In Rotational Spectroscopy, radiative beams are shown onto a sample to cause an energy-based transition between quantized rotational states. By sweeping the frequency of the radiative beams and monitoring the absorption with a sensor, one can profile the different rotational states, monitoring for energy based transitions. These transitions are dependent on unique properties of the molecules, thus presenting a unique molecular identification fingerprint (in the form …
