Under Observation: Wilson V. Inthachak Shows That Georgia’S Emergency Care Statute Still Lacks A Uniform Interpretation, Thomas S. Kiser

Mercer Law Review

This year, pro- and anti-tort reform forces met on the battleground of O.C.G.A. § 51-1-29.5(c), a statute that gives doctors increased protection from malpractice claims when they provide “emergency medical care in a hospital emergency department . . . .” When healthcare providers or hospitals are sued for negligence under these circumstances, the plaintiff must have clear and convincing evidence that the provider was grossly negligent, a greater hurdle than an ordinary medical malpractice plaintiff would need to overcome. While the statute is crystal clear in its purpose, Georgia courts have not reached a consensus regarding its application. Wilson v. …

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Introduction

LGBTQ+ college students face inequitable health outcomes in both mental health and physical health versus non-LGBTQ+ counterparts (The Trevor Project, 2023), (Brittain et Dinger, 2015). LGBTQ+ students experience higher unwillingness and disparities in care access due to negative perceptions of and experiences with UHS providers (Hood et al, 2019). Research indicates that better provider LGBTQ+ cultural awareness contributes to a more affirming space which in turn benefits LGBTQ+ healthcare (Parmenter et al, 2020), (Prasad et al, 2023).

Methods

A 2024 cross-sectional study assessed the comfort levels of LGBTQ+ college students in accessing student health services, explore how affirming healthcare …

Incorporating Families Experiencing Disabilities Into The Rhythm Of Small Groups At Saturn Road Church Of Christ, Robby John Dec 2024

Incorporating Families Experiencing Disabilities Into The Rhythm Of Small Groups At Saturn Road Church Of Christ, Robby John

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This project addresses the critical gap in the inclusion of families experiencing disabilities within small groups at Saturn Road Church of Christ. The primary aim is to develop a curriculum that raises awareness among small group leaders about this significant issue. To provide a theological reflection on the necessity of such a venture, I explored the topic through the lens of four theological pillars: the image of God, the incarnation, ecclesiology, and eschatological hope. This exploration revealed several key themes that serve as foundational building blocks for the awareness curriculum. Ultimately, the final artifact is an awareness curriculum designed to …

Tenecteplase For Acute Ischemic Stroke: Insights From A Large Community Teaching Hospital, Ithar Alsarraf, Jennifer Pilotto, Rebecca E. Baker, Emily Reich Dec 2024

Tenecteplase For Acute Ischemic Stroke: Insights From A Large Community Teaching Hospital, Ithar Alsarraf, Jennifer Pilotto, Rebecca E. Baker, Emily Reich

Posters

Acute Ischemic Stroke (AIS) is a leading cause of disability and death in the United States, requiring urgent treatment1,2; earlier treatment improves patient outcomes.

Fibrinolytic agents including alteplase and tenecteplase (TNK) reduce long-term disability in AIS but are associated with hemorrhagic risks3,4.

As of January 2024, Corewell Health East hospitals updated their guidelines that TNK would be the first line agent in the treatment of AIS.

Alteplase is the only approved agent for AIS, but TNK shows similar effectiveness along with shorter preparation and administration time which may ultimately improve door-to-needle time2 .

Careful consideration of patient characteristics is important …

The Reconciliation Roots Of Fourth Amendment Privacy, Sophia Z. Lee Dec 2024

The Reconciliation Roots Of Fourth Amendment Privacy, Sophia Z. Lee

University of Chicago Law Review

The Roberts Court has made protecting “the privacies of life” a catchphrase of Fourth Amendment law in the digital era. The time is thus ripe for revisiting the doctrinal and political roots of this newly influential quote from the Court’s 1886 decision Boyd v. United States. Existing scholarship views Boyd and its paean to privacy as an opening salvo in the Supreme Court’s turn-of-the-twentieth-century deregulatory jurisprudence (often associated with the Court’s most famous substantive due process decision, Lochner v. New York). Scholars also assume Boyd’s emphasis on privacy was in keeping with the Founders’ view of the Fourth Amendment.

Solving The Housing Puzzle, George J. Vojta Dec 2024

Solving The Housing Puzzle, George J. Vojta

University of Chicago Law Review

This Comment analyzes the entrance of institutional investors into the single- family rental market after the Great Recession of 2008. The collapse of the housing market during the Great Recession fundamentally changed the ownership structure of U.S. single-family homes in two distinct ways. First, the number of families renting single-family homes soared. And second, institutional investors entered the single-family home market, buying many homes and converting them into rental properties. This postrecession reality has introduced a housing puzzle: the pricing trends of single-family rentals in the decade after the Great Recession suggest that institutional investors have captured monopolistic power over …

Stomoxys flies exhibit an attraction toward objects that offer no rewards, such as traps and targets devoid of blood or nectar incentives. This behavior provides an opportunity to develop effective tools for vector control and monitoring. However, for these systems to be sustainable and eco-friendly, the visual cues used must be specific to target vector(s). In this study, we modified the existing blue Vavoua trap, which was originally designed to attract biting flies, to create a deceptive host attraction system specifically biased toward attracting Stomoxys. Our research revealed that Stomoxys flies are attracted to various colors, with red proving to …

Endophytic fungal-based biopesticides are sustainable and ecologically-friendly biocontrol agents of several pests and diseases. However, their potential in managing tomato fusarium wilt disease (FWD) remains unexploited. This study therefore evaluated effectiveness of nine fungal isolates against tomato fusarium wilt pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) in vitro using dual culture and co-culture assays. The efficacy of three potent endophytes that inhibited the pathogen in vitro was assessed against FWD incidence, severity, and ability to enhance growth and yield of tomatoes in planta. The ability of endophytically-colonized tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants to systemically defend themselves upon exposure to FOL …

In this study, we evaluated the role of the gnathosoma (mouthparts) in chemosensing of the most devastating honey bee parasite, Varroa destructor mite. Through transcriptomic analysis, we compared the expression of putative chemosensory genes between the body parts containing the main chemosensory organs (the forelegs), gnathosoma and the rest of the body devoid of these two body parts. Furthermore, we checked the presence of chemosensory-related transcripts in the proteome of the gnathosoma. Our comparative transcriptomic analysis revealed the presence of 83 transcripts with known characteristic conserved domains belonging to eight chemosensory gene families in the three Varroa transcriptomes. Among these …

Effect Of Microsporidia Mb Infection On The Development And Fitness Of Anopheles Arabiensis Under Different Diet Regimes, Godfred Yaw Boanyah, Lizette L. Koekemoer, Jeremy K. Herren, Tullu Bukhari

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background: Microsporidia MB (MB) is a naturally occurring symbiont of Anopheles and has recently been identified as having a potential to inhibit the transmission of Plasmodium in mosquitoes. MB intensity is high in mosquito gonads, with no fitness consequences for the mosquito, and is linked to horizontal (sexual) and vertical (transovarial) transmission from one mosquito to another. Maximising MB intensity and transmission is important for maintaining heavily infected mosquito colonies for experiments and ultimately for mosquito releases. We have investigated how diet affects the MB-Anopheles arabiensis symbiosis phenotypes, such as larval development and mortality, adult size and survival, as well …
