Pilots' Risk Perception Regarding Automation, Abigail Mileika
Pilots' Risk Perception Regarding Automation, Abigail Mileika
Honors Projects in Psychology
In aviation, each decision made, no matter how big or small, is a life-or-death decision. Small mistakes could lead to large miscalculations which end in less-than-ideal situations. This study was designed to research the impact that automation has on mainly in-flight scenarios and decisions to determine how pilots’ risk perceptions change depending on various circumstances. A survey was developed and distributed to licensed pilots, who rated their perceived risk of 8 scenarios. The scenarios were designed to follow four conditions which included first person vs. third person perspective as well as automation vs no automation involved in the scenario. Results …

Between 1972 and 1986, Ferdinand E. Marcos of the Philippines headed an autocratic system that allowed him to rule with little to no accountability. Some 36 years after FM (as he is popularly called) and family were driven from power into exile in Hawaii, his son, Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos, Jr., was overwhelmingly elected President in the May 2022 general elections. This turnaround seemed puzzling to many, but others saw a long-term deliberate process of rehabilitation after the family returned to the Philippines. Our paper explores how Filipinos remembered FM in the years after his ouster. What drives the memory of …

Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc)
During the past decade, emergency rooms (ER) across the country have become inundated with patients seeking treatment for behavioral health-related concerns. It was found in the United States in 2011 that one in four patients presenting to the emergency room did so with a mental health disorder. Patients present with a range of behavioral health concerns, including depression/anxiety, suicidal ideation, psychosis, substance use disorder, and suicidal attempts. It has been found that 1 in every five patients presenting to the ER with a mental health concern will return within 6 months. Within the same study, over 4 years, 44.8% (4796) …

In resource-limited areas, where accurate weight-for-height Z-scores are hard to obtain, Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) is a simple tool to identify wasted children. MUAC alone, however, may miss identification of many wasted children, leading to untimely intervention and potentially death. Our study aimed to identify the best-performing case definition to detect wasting by Weight-for-Height z-scores (WHZ) in Filipino children aged 6-59 months. We analyzed the 2018-2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey to assess the diagnostic performance of MUAC cutoffs and a case definition combining MUAC and weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) in identifying moderate and severe wasting compared to the WHZ criterion. The …

Impact Of Safety Training On Employee's Perceptions Of Organizational Safety Culture, Brooke Reid-Graves
Dissertations
Workplace safety and well-being are vital for all workers, regardless of their profession (Young et al., 2022). Studies show that providing employees with training focused on recognizing hazards and implementing safety practices is essential for reducing occupational risks (Namian et al., 2020; Rose & Rae, 2017). Research underscores the importance of fostering a positive organizational safety culture for risk reduction (Berry et al., 2020; Downey, 2019). Understanding the impact of safety training on shaping an organization’s safety culture is key to promoting safe working environments (Mahjoub, 2013).
This study utilized the perspectives of high school staff regarding safety training and …

With limited evidence from intervention studies, causal relationships between motor competence and cognitive and social development have yet to be clearly established. In this research, we investigated whether a targeted training programme to improve fundamental movement skills (i.e., object control, locomotor) in young children would also lead to improvements in the cognitive (i.e., executive function) and social (i.e., socioemotional competence) domains. Using a two-arm group randomised intervention design, 185 children aged 36 to 60 months (mean 47.51, SD 8.11 months) were allocated to a motor skill intervention group or an active control group. The intervention was implemented over one school …
Writing In Philosophy: Pedagogy And Practice, Sarah K. Donovan, Renée Smith
Writing In Philosophy: Pedagogy And Practice, Sarah K. Donovan, Renée Smith
Philosophy and Religious Studies
Even a cursory internet search of syllabi for philosophy courses shows that the tradition of assigning papers—five-page papers, ten-page papers, fifteen-page papers—is still thriving. Yet the schedule of topics, often listed on those same syllabi, very seldom reveals any course time devoted to teaching students how to write. Perhaps the assignments themselves reveal the process of writing papers, rubrics reveal the expectations, and feedback nudges students to improve their writing. But that kind of information is not transparent in many syllabi. Even if we suppose that philosophy faculty support the idea of Writing Across the Curriculum, in practice faculty across …

As video games grow in popularity, concerns regarding their ethical and environmental implications are brought up. While once, topics like their impact on child development or harm to Earth might have been considered minor or irrelevant, these concerns are now voiced in numerous articles across the internet, amplifying the urgency to develop games in an ethical context before matters are blown out of proportion. For the purposes of exploring both past and present views, this work draws from older and newer sources surrounding many topics on the idea of game development in the video game industry. Essentially, video game development …

While Academic Nurse Leaders (ANLs) are vital to the functioning and quality of nursing programs in academic settings, many enter their roles with limited or no prior academic leadership and management experience. The inadequate preparation and development of ANLs remains a critical concern. For this reason, ANLs positions can be challenging and hard to fill. Although ANLs can hold various titles and positions across different academic institutions, this study specifically focuses on Deans, Directors, and Department Chairs working in the New York State area. Bolman and Deal’s (2021) four-frame model of leadership offers a framework that can be used to …
Spillover Effects And Political Yardstick Competition In Local Public Spending In Indonesia, Muhammad Reyhan Akbar, Bagdja Muljarijadi
Spillover Effects And Political Yardstick Competition In Local Public Spending In Indonesia, Muhammad Reyhan Akbar, Bagdja Muljarijadi
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
This study aims to test the presence of spillover effects and political yardstick competition in both mandatory and discretionary spending among local governments in Indonesia. A spatial econometrics model was employed to evaluate data from 410 districts/municipalities in Indonesia from 2010 to 2018. The findings confirm spillover effects in spending decisions among local governments. The empirical analysis also reveals that political factors drive horizontal interactions in mandatory spending, while such influences are absent in discretionary spending.

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier De Saint-Georges' "Overture" From L'Amant Anonyme: A Transcription For Wind Ensemble, Lindsay H. Guilbeau
Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to transcribe the orchestral Overture from Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges’ only opera with a surviving score, L’Amant Anonyme, for wind ensemble. Transcribing this portion of L’Amant Anonyme by a Black composer from the Classical era not only provides the opportunity to expose the wind band community to an underrepresented composer but also gives this work an additional medium to be performed in. Bologne was dubbed “Le Mozart Noir” or “Black Mozart” by French concertgoeres of the time, and the nickname has not yet disappeared. This title, whether or not intentional, pus him in …

- Inpatient administration of specialty biologic agents can have significant financial impacts on a healthcare system.
- The “Never Administer Inpatient List” (NAIL) is an established reference which contains biologic infusions that should be administered in an outpatient setting when clinically appropriate.
- While outpatient administration may be clinically appropriate, there are many barriers to coordinating outpatient infusions that result in unnecessary inpatient administration. This can result in a prolonged length of stay and increased medication cost.

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Background: Wildland firefighters are likely to experience heightened risks to safety, health, and overall well-being as changing climates increase the frequency and intensity of exposure to natural hazards. Working at the intersection of natural resource management and emergency response, wildland firefighters have multidimensional careers that often incorporate elements from disparate fields to accomplish the tasks of suppressing and preventing wildfires. Thus, they have distinctly different job duties than other firefighters (e.g., structural firefighters) and experience environmental health risks that are unique to their work. We conducted a systematic scoping review of scientific literature that addresses wildland firefighter environmental health. Our …

Host Response To Implantation Of A Poly N-Isopropylarylamide Injectable Cell Therapy Vehicle, Cole Matthew Burk
Master's Theses
There is a need to develop novel and effective therapies targeting end-stage peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Inducing collateral arteriogenesis is a possible novel treatment that produces a natural bypass for blood flow, a promising solution to the long-term issues seen with current treatments. Regenerative therapies, and progenitor cells specifically, have demonstrated great promise in repair after injury and disease. While most progenitor or stem cells have poor efficacy in this context, muscle progenitor cells, or myoblasts, have encouraging results. Myoblasts enhance arteriogenesis and secrete cytokines or chemokines that recruit monocytes to injury sites. Implanting these adherent cells in a …
