The Physical And Psychological Impacts Of Exercise On Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Case Study, Savannah Posey
Honors Projects
Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a subtype of a series of connective tissue disorders identified by joint hypermobility and multisystemic symptoms. It is caused by a lack of collagen production affecting the body’s ability to support important structures such as muscle, bone skin, and other connective tissues. To study the physical and psychological impacts of exercise on hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a seven-week, phased exercise intervention program was implemented for a nineteen-year-old male with the disease. The program consisted of three phases focused on the strengthening of the surrounding musculature of the glenohumeral joint, along with improving muscular endurance and proprioception. …

U.S-Venezuelan Relations: Personality And Foreign Policy Decision Making, Isabella D. Alvarez Chacon
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro, the authoritarian socialist regime leaders in Venezuela, are known for their social programs and their stance against the U.S., but only Maduro cut off diplomatic relations with the U.S., one of the most significant FP decisions of his administration. This research examines the role that the personalities of these leaders may have played in explaining their distinct FP towards the U.S. Personality helps find traits that shift a leader’s behavior that then influence how they make decisions. Previous research has shown that personality is a helpful tool for understanding leaders' strategies, but it has not …

Host Mediated Rhizobiome Engineering To Develop Locally Adapted Soil Mycorrhizal Inocula To Facilitate The Establishment Of Native Plants On Contaminated Soils, Anna Nugent
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
The microbial community in the rhizosphere of plants plays an important role in plant establishment and survival, soil stability during stormwater runoff, and potential biofiltration of stormwater. Locally adapted fungal symbionts may further improve these outcomes for native plants at restoration sites. This study assesses the potential of host plant cultured, locally adapted soil mycorrhizal inocula to facilitate the establishment and growth of Mountain Big Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. vaseyana) on heavy-metal contaminated soils. Soil was obtained from the rhizosphere of native plants at three sites in the West Side Soils Operable Unit of the Butte, Montana Superfund Complex. One …
Examining The Effects Of Language Barriers For Non-Native English Speakers In The Healthcare System In Northwest Ohio, Sarah Witt
Honors Projects
Hundreds of thousands of people in the state of Ohio speak a language other than English, and communication in a predominantly English-speaking state can prove not only cumbersome, but dangerous as well. Patients who have difficulties communicating with their healthcare providers experience higher rates of medical error, adverse medical reactions because of improper drug use, longer hospital stays, and more hospital readmissions than the general population. Additionally, they experience high rates of anxiety and frustration when receiving medical care, which causes resentment and mistrust of the healthcare system. This study investigated language barriers in healthcare systems across Northwest Ohio by …

Leadership Awakening: Shifting Towards Eco-Consciousness Through Psychedelics, Ladana Edwards
Journal of Conscious Evolution
Corporate leaders, wielding influence and decision-making power over world resources and capital, are key drivers of systemic change to address current social, economic, and ecological crises. To address the myriad complex and interdependent crises, a transformative shift in consciousness is required in leaders and leadership teams, from ego-consciousness towards eco-consciousness, which can be supported through psychedelic experiences. Shifting towards eco-consciousness can facilitate holistic decision making and an expanded sense of leadership responsibility to the planet and all its inhabitants—ultimately supporting the creation of healthier eco-nomics in our Earth community.
Shifts towards leadership eco-consciousness have the potential to open up space …

High Intracranial Pressure Following Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy: Illustrative Case, Zachary Sokol, Rohan V. Gupta, Robert Ziechmann, Scott R. Shepard
Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations
BACKGROUND: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is an effective procedure for the treatment of triventriculomegaly associated with aqueductal stenosis. However, some patients can develop severe and symptomatic intracranial pressure (ICP) elevations in the immediate postoperative period that can be monitored and treated with external ventricular drain (EVD) placement and controlled cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion until the ICP normalizes and symptoms resolve.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe the case of a 39-year-old male who underwent ETV and intraoperative EVD placement for obstructive hydrocephalus associated with aqueductal stenosis. The patient was noted to have sustained ICP elevations in the immediate perioperative period but ultimately …

Wearable Surface Electromyography System To Predict Freeze Of Gait In Parkinson's Disease Patients., Anna Moore, Jinxing Li, Christopher H Contag, Luke J Currano, Connor O Pyles, David A Hinkle, Vivek Shinde Patil
Neuroscience Articles
Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling yet poorly understood paroxysmal gait disorder affecting the vast majority of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) as they reach advanced stages of the disorder. Falling is one of the most disabling consequences of a FOG episode; it often results in injury and a future fear of falling, leading to diminished social engagement, a reduction in general fitness, loss of independence, and degradation of overall quality of life. Currently, there is no robust or reliable treatment against FOG in PD. In the absence of reliable and effective treatment for Parkinson's disease, alleviating the consequences …

Access To Virtual Care In Behavioral Health: A Social Determinant Of Health, Patrick J. Hearle, Emily A. Smith, Richard J. Caplan, Ram A. Sharma
SKMC Student Presentations and Publications
Abstract Objective: In the wake of COVID-19, the use of virtual modalities to provide healthcare has increased significantly. While virtual care services, particularly for behavioral health encounters, have become commonplace in many healthcare systems, there is limited data describing to what extent access to virtual care is affected by social determinants of health. The present study aims to characterize the utilization of virtual (video, phone) and non-virtual (in—person office visits) behavioral health care encounters among differing socioeconomic and demographic populations in two campuses served by a tertiary care center in Delaware to identify trends and potential barriers to these services. …
