Sulfhydryl-Containing Compounds And Iron Homeostasis: Mechanisms Of Labile Iron Pool Dysregulation And Consequences For Cellular Health, Steven Lowell Mann Christiansen
Sulfhydryl-Containing Compounds And Iron Homeostasis: Mechanisms Of Labile Iron Pool Dysregulation And Consequences For Cellular Health, Steven Lowell Mann Christiansen
Theses and Dissertations
While iron's unique coordination chemistry and redox activity have resulted in its broad incorporation into biological systems, dysfunction in key iron-regulating mechanisms can transform these biochemical advantages into factors that contribute to several pathological conditions. This dissertation explores the complex interactions between iron and sulfhydryl-containing compounds (SCCs), with particular focus on glutathione's (GSH) role in stabilizing iron reactivity juxtaposed with homocysteine's (Hcy) ability to disrupt iron homeostasis and promote disease progression. Through rigorous biochemical analysis and experimentation, we demonstrate that Hcy disrupts iron regulation through several mechanisms: (1) Hcy competitively displaces protective iron-binding molecules in the Labile Iron Pool (LIP), …

The Rise, Fall, And Resurgence Of Phage Therapy For Urinary Tract Infection, Jacob J Zulk, Kathryn A Patras, Anthony W Maresso
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
In the face of rising antimicrobial resistance, bacteriophage therapy, also known as phage therapy, is seeing a resurgence as a potential treatment for bacterial infections including urinary tract infection (UTI). Primarily caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli, the 400 million UTI cases annually are major global healthcare burdens and a primary cause of antibiotic prescriptions in the outpatient setting. Phage therapy has several potential advantages over antibiotics including the ability to disrupt bacterial biofilms and synergize with antimicrobial treatments with minimal side effects or impacts on the microbiota. Phage therapy for UTI treatment has shown generally favorable results in recent …
The Role Of Japan’S Labor And Social Security Attorney (Sharoushi) In Expanding Social Security Coverage; A Benchmark Model For Indonesia’S Perisai, Kader Jkn, And Agenalis", Yoshihiko Ono
Jurnal Administrasi Bisnis Terapan
This study examines the role of Japan's Labor and Social Security Attorney, known as Sharoushi, in expanding social security coverage and ensuring the effective collection of insurance premiums and providing Human Resources Consultation. The Sharoushi system, alongside Japan’s labor insurance office associations, has significantly contributed to the inclusivity and sustainability of Japan's social security framework, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The study mainly analysis Sharoushi system and compares the Sharoushi system with Indonesia's similar professions, such as Perisai, Kader JKN, and Agenalis, which were inspired by Japanese models and implemented to support informal sector workers. This comparative analysis …

Perceptions Of Sport Fandom As A Means Of Meeting Psychological Needs, Daniel L. Wann Phd
Findings in Sport, Hospitality, Entertainment, and Event Management
The current study examined the use of sport fandom and team identification to assist in meeting four basic psychological needs: belonging, distinctiveness, structure, and meaning. The results indicated that fans view both general sport fandom and team identification as having the capability of helping them meet each of the needs, especially the need to belong. Additionally, team identification was believed to be more effective in assisting with the need for distinctiveness than was general sport fandom.

Empowering Inner City Communities: Some Observations, Engdawork Desta
The Geographical Bulletin
The federal government's engagement in dealing with U.S. inner city concerns has been extensive although the results have not been satisfactory. In spite of repeated special considerations given to the problems, the lack of lasting solutions necessitated launching new urban empowerment zone and enterprise community projects in recent years. This paper reflects on the attempts made thus far to change inner city conditions and the inevitable challenges of development faced in market economies. Certain preliminary assessments are made with regard to the current Empowerment Zone project, using Baltimore city as an example.

Drinking Water Issues And Management In The Republic Of The Philippines, William James Smith, Jr
The Geographical Bulletin
Major drinking water issues and management schemes in the Republic of the Philippines are examined utilizing a political geographic perspective. By examining these issues and management schemes, administrators in developing countries, such as the Philippines, can provide more effective drinking water management for their citizens. Effective drinking water management is an essential building block in the foundation of sustainable development. This type of socio-political and economic research demonstrates the importance of equity in "safe" drinking water distribution, and the value of watershedbased and integrated natural resource management. The importance of recognizing the provision of safe drinking water as a human …

The "Ways Of Peace" And The "Ways Of Pleasantness": Core Values Of Jewish Law, Hershey H. Friedman, Joshua Krausz
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The phrase "the Constitution is not a suicide pact" signifies that during times of crisis, the nation's survival takes precedence over constitutional rights. Similarly, the sages of the Talmud emphasized that "Her [the Torah's] ways are the ways of pleasantness, and all of her paths are peace," underscores that sometimes laws have to be adjusted if they can cause strife and dissension. They used this verse from Proverbs to establish the principles of darchei shalom (the ways of peace) and darchei noam (the ways of pleasantness) to foster a peaceful, harmonious, and pleasant society, often amending biblical laws to maintain …

The Association Of Leadership Styles With Psychosocial Safety Climate: The Case Of Authentic Leadership, Eugene Laloo, Robyn Coman, Natalia K. Hanley
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Psychosocial safety climate (PSC) is an organisation-level construct that measures an organisation’s commitment to the prevention of psychological harm in the workplace and has been identified as a lead indicator for psychological hazards. A key factor in PSC is senior leaders’ involvement through the establishment of policies, procedures, and practices for the prevention of psychological harm in the workplace. While leadership has been identified as an antecedent for a favourable PSC, the impact of different leadership styles on PSC has not been extensively studied.
This article reports a multivariate study of five contemporary leadership styles and their impact on PSC. …

Kitkats And Boiling Kettles: Understanding Reciprocal Relationships In The Workplace, Gavin Mason, Garry Nicholson
Kitkats And Boiling Kettles: Understanding Reciprocal Relationships In The Workplace, Gavin Mason, Garry Nicholson
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Often referred to as a law, principle, norm or rule, reciprocity can be defined as a state or condition of free interchange or mutual responsiveness. This paper considers the importance of reciprocity in organisational settings, whilst identifying three reciprocal exchange behaviours of which leaders should be aware. A Socratic dialogue using the Nelson/Heckmann approach is adopted as a research method, with the primary methodological concern being that of the axiological field of philosophy. Axiology deals with the nature of value and asks what is intrinsically worthwhile. This can lead to multiple questions about what we value in an organisational context. …

Why Selecting Leaders Is So Difficult, Doug Knuth, Laura Queen, Cam Caldwell
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The focus of this paper is on the importance of understanding the selection and testing process for top-level organizational leaders, managers, and supervisors and identifying the reasons why so many organizations are unsuccessful in selecting people for those critical positions. The paper begins by identifying five major problems that explain why organizations are limited in their ability to select the right people for top level managerial and leadership positions. Citing information from scholars, academic institutions, research organizations, and the Society for Human Resource Management, we identify root causes of “the leader selection problem” and offer eight specific recommendations for addressing …

Review Exploring Sperm Morphological: World Health Organization Vs. Kruger Strict Criteria, Talal Z. Al-Darawsha
Review Exploring Sperm Morphological: World Health Organization Vs. Kruger Strict Criteria, Talal Z. Al-Darawsha
Al-Ameed Journal for Medical Research and Health Sciences
Sperm morphology, the study of the size, shape, and appearance of sperm cells, is vital in evaluating male fertility. This assessment has evolved through decades of research, beginning in the 1930s with foundational classification systems by Cary and Moench.
A significant advancement came in the late 1980s with the Kruger strict criteria, which standardized sperm morphology evaluation using high-magnification microscopy and advanced staining, supported by the WHO.
This standardization is crucial in diagnosing male infertility and optimizing treatment strategies. In assisted reproduction technologies like IVF and ICSI, normal sperm morphology is essential for predicting fertilization potential and successful pregnancy outcomes. …

Boucher V. Maine Employment Security Commission: The Role Of Acceptance In Employment Security Law, Bradley M. Lown
Boucher V. Maine Employment Security Commission: The Role Of Acceptance In Employment Security Law, Bradley M. Lown
Maine Law Review
The Maine Employment Security Law was enacted in an attempt to limit the serious social consequences of unemployment and to insure individual workers against the distress of involuntary unemployment. Under the law, employees who leave work voluntarily without "good cause" are ineligible for unemployment compensation benefits. Until recently the Maine Supreme Judicial Court had not determined whether a substantial reduction in wages by an employer would constitute good cause to leave work under the "voluntary quit" provision of the law. In Boucher v. Maine Employment Security Commission, however, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, sitting as the Law Court, determined that …
Comparative Negligence: The Multiple Defendant Dilemma, Karen P. O'Sullivan
Comparative Negligence: The Multiple Defendant Dilemma, Karen P. O'Sullivan
Maine Law Review
Maine's comparative negligence statute provides that a plaintiff who is partly at fault for his or her own injury may recover so long as he or she is not "equally at fault." The statute is simple to apply when there is only one defendant. In cases that involve two or more defendants, however, neither the Maine Supreme Judicial Court nor the Legislature has indicated whether the plaintiff's fault is compared with the fault of each defendant individually or all defendants combined.
Local Land Use Controls: An Idea Whose Time Has Passed, Orlando E. Delogu
Local Land Use Controls: An Idea Whose Time Has Passed, Orlando E. Delogu
Maine Law Review
The suggestion that local land use control powers are not working well—that they may not be susceptible to modest but useful reforms or modifications and thus ought to be more drastically altered or abandoned altogether—is not new. Beginning nearly twenty years ago with Richard Babcock's publication of The Zoning Game, the literature and case law in the field is rife with express and implied suggestions that too much land use control power has been given to local governments. More recently Professor Jan Krasnowiecki suggested we abolish zoning, and the New Jersey court in its latest Mount Laurel decision underscored the …
