Human Impact On Ancient Environments. By Charles L. Redman, James D. Lowry, Jr Nov 2024

Human Impact On Ancient Environments. By Charles L. Redman, James D. Lowry, Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

Having just taught conservation of natural resources to a small group of students over the summer, and just gearing up to teach it again in the fall, current environmental problems were foremost in my mind as I picked up Human Impact on Ancient Environments. Although my research background includes the Mayan culture area of MesoAmerica (via an interdisciplinary mix of geographers, archaeologists, and others) and I discuss their maladaptive environmental strategies in class, I offer them only briefly as an example of population growth and its relationship to environmental damage. My focus is on the present. In Human Impact Redman …

The Coming Age Of Scarcity: Preventing Mass Death And Genocide In The Twenty First Century. By Michael N. Dobkowski And Isidor Wallimann (Eds.), James D. Lowry, Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

The Coming Age of Scarcity is a collection of essays examining the relationship between population growth and resource depletion and genocide (and the collapse of our civilization!). The authors immediately jump into a fatalistic doomsday scenario. The Foreword, by John K. Roth, has the essence of strong anticapitalism bias. For example, Roth states “the great transformation from agricultural to . . . industrial societies has always been on the back of peasants” (4), refers to Eastern Europe as “once a highly selfsufficient economic and political system” (13), and states “markets, if left to themselves, cannot factor in long-term scarcity” (14). …

Fieldwork Dilemmas: Anthropologists In Post Socialist States. By Hermine G. De Soto And Nora Dudwick (Eds.), James D. Lowry, Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

Fieldwork Dilemmas is a collection of essays from 10 anthropologists’ experiences in postsocialist eastern Europe. The primary focus is not to recount the results of their ethnographic research, but to detail the many problems and dangers they encountered in conducting the research in communities undergoing tremendous change in almost every facet of life. Research reports from Armenia, Macedonia, Serbia, eastern Germany, Kyrgystan, Siberia, Uzbekistan, and Bulgaria are included into three collections.

Blame Walt Rostow For Miss Som Rasmey’S Acid Bath, David J. Nemeth Nov 2024

Blame Walt Rostow For Miss Som Rasmey’S Acid Bath, David J. Nemeth

The Geographical Bulletin

In general, the legal rights of women in Asia are ignored. The paper provides anecdotal evidence of “young, beautiful” women in several Asian countries who have been the targets of acid attacks by angry men and women over personal issues. Battery acid is the weapon of choice. The acid attacks intentionally transform these women from “beautiful” to “ugly.” Most of the victims are alone and poor, and youth and beauty may be their only assets. The courts of law, however, blame the victims’ beauty and wile for initiating the circumstances that result in their suffering. The attackers generally go free. …

Race And American College Testing (Act) Scores In Illinois, Wendy Shaw, Bin Zhou Nov 2024

Race And American College Testing (Act) Scores In Illinois, Wendy Shaw, Bin Zhou

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper explores links between race and ethnicity, and performance on the American College Testing (ACT) within Illinois. This paper utilizes information about the performance of Illinois’ 85, 480 year 2000 graduating seniors who took the ACT assessment. The ACT scores reported by county are broken down into various racial and ethnic groupings, and a Geographic Information System was used to map and explore the spatial dimensions of the data. The results of the analysis indicate that performance on the ACT varies by the type of county involved, and is linked to family income rather than to race per se. …

Indonesia: A Geopolitical Study, Jasem M. Karam Nov 2024

Indonesia: A Geopolitical Study, Jasem M. Karam

The Geographical Bulletin

Indonesia is one of the southeast Asian countries that had faced an economic disaster in 1997. As a result of this and its political and ethnic problems, Indonesia’s political future became unstable. Problems had begun when East Timor, a Portuguese colony that fell under Indonesian control in 1975, demanded its independence. Following a long struggle that cost many human lives, the East Timorese succeeded in voting for independence with the help of the United Nations in August, 1999. In May, 2002 it became an independent state. The separation of East Timor provoked other provinces such as Aceh, Riau, Papua, Kalimantan, …

Multimedia Technology In The School Geography Classroom: A Case Study, Daniel P. Donaldson Nov 2024

Multimedia Technology In The School Geography Classroom: A Case Study, Daniel P. Donaldson

The Geographical Bulletin

Today, educators are being called on to cultivate a more geographically literate body of students. Just as computer technologies have found use in nearly all aspects of North American society, they are now looked upon as a tool which will enhance students’ geography learning. Through the use of multimedia software packages, it has been suggested that students will gain a more intricate collection of spatial understandings. This work draws on results of direct intervention in two sixth-grade classrooms in Cleveland, Ohio. It compares two methods of teaching and learning geographic concepts: one employing the use of multimedia and the other …

Afghanistan’S Cultural Diversity: A Reflection Of Its Turbulent Past, James B. Dalton, Jr Nov 2024

Afghanistan’S Cultural Diversity: A Reflection Of Its Turbulent Past, James B. Dalton, Jr

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper examines the historical geography of the distribution of people occupying Afghanistan and the surrounding the region. The analysis reveals a complex political pattern that defies the international boundaries displayed on most world maps. Further understanding is gained from this examination of human occupation patterns as it relates to people who have controlled the space now known as Afghanistan. The history of this region provides valuable insights into the present conditions and the current geopolitical reality of Afghanistan. The periods examined are pre-18th Century, 18th and 19th Centuries and concludes examining the early 20th Century with an analysis of …

Geography, Gamma Thetaupsilon (Gtu), And The Millennials In The New Millennium, M. Duane Nellis

The Geographical Bulletin

In reviewing GTU’s Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU) history, one sees where this international honor society has experienced periods of sustained growth, and it continues to play an important role in geography’s success (Maxfield, 2003). And today, we not only celebrate the first 75 years of GTU’s history but also we begin to look forward to a new generation of college students, a new generation of geographers—a generation some have referred to as the millennials—with their changing values and expectations. In this keynote address, I would like to briefly comment on this new generation in the context of GTU and geography …

Crossing Over: The Migrant “Other” In The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Casey Joe Walker, Anthony Ramirez, Arthur D. Soto-Vásquez

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Two mainstream films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reflect anxiety about the alien (migrant) “other” through difference and crisis. In this article, we explore how refugees and “shithole” planets form a major plot point in Captain Marvel (2019). At the most extreme, alien exclusion is articulated in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), from the villain’s perspective, as a Malthusian need for extermination of lives to preserve environmental balance. Seemingly innocuous, these narratives are symbolic of a creeping right-wing discourse that dehumanizes outsiders, refugees, and migrants in popular culture. Inspired by the call to consider how film and new media …

Ethical Responsibility In The Design Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Systems, David K. Mcgraw Nov 2024

Ethical Responsibility In The Design Of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Systems, David K. Mcgraw

International Journal on Responsibility

This article aims to provide an overview of the ethical questions surrounding the responsibilities of designers of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. First, the author delves into the philosophical underpinnings of this responsibility, examining various ethical theories to grasp the moral obligations individuals have towards others and society. The author contends that designers of technology bear the responsibility of considering the broader societal implications of their creations. Subsequently, the author scrutinizes the fundamental question of whether AI systems present unique ethical concerns compared to conventional technologies, pinpointing factors such as complexity, opacity, autonomy, unpredictability, uncertainty, and the potential for significant social …

An Exploration Into Why There Is An Overrepresentation Of Bame People In Missing Person Cases, Phoebe Sleigh-Johnson, Fiona Gabbert Dr., Adrian J. Scott

International Journal of Missing Persons

The overrepresentation of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people in missing person cases is an issue that is not understood within society and has largely been neglected within academic literature to date. This study, therefore, aims to explore why this overrepresentation might exist by obtaining the views and opinions of 24 professionals (including police officers) working within the field of missing people. The study used a qualitative, exploratory method and an anonymous online survey containing a series of open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was performed on the data, and three main themes were identified; the first related to the idea …

Unmasking Male Voices In Woman Hollering Creek: Contributions To Pedagogy And Masculinity Studies, Ramón Javier Guerra, Joan Latchaw

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

In teaching Sandra Cisneros’ Woman Hollering Creek to undergraduates, we have developed a sociocultural and historical framework, beginning with the theoretical work of Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands and the concept of transfrontera feminism. With incidents of seduction and sexual abuse of women, spousal abuse, and patriarchal family structures, the collection of stories strongly indicates the oppressive representation of machismo. Scholars and teachers have drawn important critiques of Cisneros’s work based on destructive sociocultural forces on women. However, in rereading the text with an intended focus on the representations of male characters, we have surmised that Cisneros structured the stories in the …

Hell You Talmbout: Mixtapes As Method For Online Environmental Justice Pedagogy, Elspeth Iralu, Caitlin Grann

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This paper takes on the mixtape as a pedagogical method for approaching urgent and critical topics within the undergraduate online classroom. Drawing on two case studies from different sections of an introductory course on environmental and social justice taught in an American studies department, we demonstrate how mixtape-inspired assignments offer a method for theorizing and enacting the connections between popular culture and critical scholarship around injustice in the humanities and social sciences while also altering the space of the classroom to promote deeper student engagement, comprehension, and reflection. We argue that introducing popular culture as both content and method within …

CMSI Studies in Chinese Maritime Development

Through concerted efforts over the past quarter-century, the People's Republic of China has achieved the most dramatic military buildup since World War II. Previously limited in its ability to conduct its Joint Firepower Strike, Joint Blockade, and Joint Island Landing Campaigns against Taiwan, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is making rapid progress across the board as it prepares to meet the requirements of Xi Jinping’s Taiwan-focused Centennial Military Building Goal of 2027. Drawing on research, writing, and insights from some of the world’s leading experts, CMSI’s latest edited conference volume probes key questions concerning Beijing’s determined pursuit of the Chinese …

Designing For Researcher Access In The U.S. Mortality Data Ecosystem, Dylan Thomas Doyle, Casey Fiesler, Jessica Pater, Jed R. Brubaker

Health Services and Informatics Research

Access to mortality data is critical for researchers for various reasons, including the development of life-saving medical interventions. However, high-quality mortality data is typically unavailable for researchers to access in a timely manner due to bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the coordination of managing mortality data across a vast information ecosystem. To identify opportunities to improve access to mortality data, we conducted a qualitative interview study with 20 experts with direct knowledge and experience with mortality data systems. From these interviews, we mapped the mortality data ecosystem and found that policy constraints are the main underlying cause of bottlenecks and inefficiencies. …

“I Am A Conversation”: Media Literacy, Queer Pedagogy, And Steven Universe In College Curriculum, Misty Thomas

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

The recent cartoon show on Cartoon Network Steven Universe allows for the blending of both queer theory and media literacies to create a pedagogical space for students to investigate and analyze not only queerness, but also normative and non-normative identities. This show creates characters as well as relationships that both break with and subvert what would be considered traditional masculine and feminine identities. Additionally, Steven Universe also creates a space where sexuality and transgender bodies are represented. This paper demonstrates both the presence of queerness within the show and the pedagogical implications for using this piece of media within a …
