Background: During the past several decades, enterococci are emerging as an important cause of healthcare-associated infections. They have developed resistance to various antimicrobials previously used for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs). This study was aimed to determine the prevalence of Enterococcus species among urinary tract-infected patients in a tertiary care hospital, in Karnataka, India. Material and Methods: We have analyzed 4341 culture-positive urine samples received by microbiology laboratory during the year 2021. The bacterial identification was done by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. The antibiotic sensitivity was tested by automated VITEK-2® COMPACT (bioMérieux) system. Results: …
Using Moss As An Inexpensive Air Pollution Bioindicator For Environmental Equity In Santa Clara Country, California, Tam Dan Tran
Using Moss As An Inexpensive Air Pollution Bioindicator For Environmental Equity In Santa Clara Country, California, Tam Dan Tran
Master's Theses
Toxins pervade urban areas and pose long-term health risks to humans. I examine moss as an affordable bioindicator and assess whether moss monitor results reflect other air quality (AQ) indicators, environmental factors, and social vulnerability. Specifically, I investigate (1) whether moss is an effective atmospheric pollution indicator and (2) whether low-income or high-lead-risk neighborhoods experience greater exposure to air pollution. I set out Hypnum cupressiforme moss for two months of exposure in 28 Santa Clara County locations and then measured chromium, zinc, nickel, and the loss of chlorophyll fluorescence in the moss tissue. I gathered real-time particulate matter (PM2.5) measurements …
Exploring Community Adaptation To Public Safety Power Shutoff Events: Findings From Two Case Studies Of Unincorporated Mountain Communities In Southern California, Ramiro M. Brown
Master's Theses
As aging electrical infrastructure in the US continues to succumb to unyielding weather patterns brought on by climate change, there is an urgency among Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) to reduce the likelihood of their equipment sparking a wildfire. Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) – the intentional de-energization of the electrical grid on high fire weather danger days – have become a staple in IOU Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMPs) since 2018 as one way to avoid wildfire ignitions via electrical infrastructure. One criticism of PSPS events is that they create their own hazard by cutting off power to thousands – sometimes millions-of …
An Assessment Of Anthropogenic Injuries On White Sharks (Carcharodon Carcharias) In Central California, Kaitlyn Yee
An Assessment Of Anthropogenic Injuries On White Sharks (Carcharodon Carcharias) In Central California, Kaitlyn Yee
Master's Theses
As human activities increasingly impact marine ecosystems, understanding the effects of anthropogenic activity on white sharks is important for their continued conservation. Human-induced injuries are observed in many shark species. Such injuries have been found to have physiological and ecological impacts. Four sites in Central California off the coasts of Aptos, Año Nuevo Island, Southeast Farallon Island, and Point Reyes are all known areas of white shark aggregation with varying levels of human use and protection. Utilizing a vast video database, this study evaluated the effects of natural and non-natural anthropogenic shark injury types across all locations, age classes, and …

Towards The Development Of A Gis Model For Planning And Administering Literacy Education Programs In Urban Areas, Jeffrey P. Richetto, William E. Couch
The Geographical Bulletin
As the world continues to change ever higher demands are placed on individuals, households, and businesses; thus, the definition and need to be literate also continue to shift. Today, adults require greater levels of basic skills commensurate to function effectively in an increasingly visual and technological environment. Within the United States fewer than ten percent of the estimated 44 million adults who could potentially benefit from literacy programs are currently being served. Additional funding, improved coordination among service providers, and greater availability of support services including childtare, transportation, and accessible class meeting sites are important planning issues. Therefore, it becomes …

Geographer At Work: John A. Rusatsky Zoning Enforcement Officer, Leon Yacker
The Geographical Bulletin
ROUTE TO THE JOB: When John Rusatsky graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Geography he knew what he wanted to do in the future. He had chosen the specialization in planning offered by the department after overhearing a casual conversation by two other students about geography. He was dissatisfied with the major he had at the time and so he approached a faculty member in the department for further information. Before changing his major, his grades were poor and he had no particular interest in the future. Like many students he " discovered" …

Using a GIS, nine cultural and physical parameters in onekilometer2 pixels are identified, classified and mapped. A coefficient of urban hazard is calculated per square kilometer within the city. Of the 10 administrative municipalities, Jinan and Luwang, in the central city, are determined as having high urban disaster potential. Natural hazards such as storm surges and subsidence in the delta complex have been recognized and addressed. However, in view of increasing urbanization, urban hazard is yet to be adequately …
Measuring Greenness: A Study Of The Southwest Texas State University Recycling Program, Rebecca S. Beard
Measuring Greenness: A Study Of The Southwest Texas State University Recycling Program, Rebecca S. Beard
The Geographical Bulletin
Successful recycling programs at colleges and universities require active student, faculty, and staff participation. Such programs often have to be funded by additional student fees, but increasing tuition rates leave students divided on their level of support for the program. Nevertheless, such debate increases environmental awareness and students' concern about university policy. A sample of 120 students at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas were asked 15 questions regarding recycling . The survey revealed that students would support an increase in the number of recycling bins on campus, though they are in need of instruction on how and where- …
Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment Geography Education: The Road Ahead, Daniel P. Donaldson
Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment Geography Education: The Road Ahead, Daniel P. Donaldson
The Geographical Bulletin
More than a decade ago, Geography in America (Gaile and Willmontt, 1989) was released. Among the updates and discussions of geography's systematic subfields, was a chapter assessing the past, present, and future of geography education (Hill and LaPrairie, 1989). That work outlined the progression of geography's place of relative prominence in the early 1900s, to its virtual disappearance in American K-12 education. While the authors pointed to a plethora of challenges, they also noted that geography education was showing signs of new life. Indeed, geography has begun to show up in more and more school classrooms, and geographic literacy has …

Development And Evaluation Of A Nurse Leader-Led Acuity-Based Nursing Assignment Program And Its Outcome On Peripheral Intravenous Infiltrations And Extravasations In Pediatric Patients, Cassandra D. Dike
Dissertations
In this evidence-based project, the team developed a model of patient assignments for nurses in a pediatric acute care setting based on workload and acuity as opposed to hours per patient day (HPPD). The team used a plan-do-study-act, or PDSA, cycle of quality improvement methodology to demonstrate that assignments based on acuity as opposed to ratios would improve patient outcomes. The outcome measure was peripheral intravenous infiltrations and extravasations (PIVIEs). In the 6-week time frame only two PIVIEs were identified, and they occurred on shifts in which the ideal acuity score was not met for the nursing assignments due to …

Analysis Of Forensic Crime Gun Data As A Predictive Tool For Crime Gun Intelligence And The Disruption Of The Shooting Cycle, Michael P. Garvey
Analysis Of Forensic Crime Gun Data As A Predictive Tool For Crime Gun Intelligence And The Disruption Of The Shooting Cycle, Michael P. Garvey
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Gun violence is a national issue; however, major cities account for most recovered crime guns and shootings. Various efforts to address gun violence by identifying shooters and sources of crime guns, enhancing intervention efforts, improving social services, and prosecuting prolific offenders have been offered over the last twenty years. However, large urban cities continue to observe high homicides and non-fatal shooting rates. Forensic techniques have been used to generate leads to solve crimes. In addition, group violence intervention programs, such as Operation Ceasefire, are used to identify potential groups associated with gun violence to provide social alternatives or enhanced prosecution. …
The Complex Relationship Between Tuberculosis And Hyperglycemia, Michelle Byers, Elizabeth Guy
The Complex Relationship Between Tuberculosis And Hyperglycemia, Michelle Byers, Elizabeth Guy
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Hyperglycemia and tuberculosis are dual global pandemics. Each has a propulsive and amplifying effect on the other, and, because of this, we must consider hyperglycemia and tuberculosis together. Hyperglycemia is immunosuppressive and increases the risk of tuberculosis by threefold. It also leads to a more advanced presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis, thus increasing the likelihood of being smear positive and having cavitating lesions, and it impacts the duration and outcomes of treatment, with an increased one year mortality seen in patients with tuberculosis and diabetes. Additionally, any degree of hyperglycemia can have an impact on susceptibility to tuberculosis, and this effect …

Pathways Of Participation: Community Engagement And Collaborative Adaptation In Disaster Contexts Across Diverse Environments, Ria Mukerji
Geography ETDs
This paper broadens the concept of effective community participation in disaster risk reduction by analyzing three case studies that emphasize unconventional, locally driven approaches. Using a multi-case study method, I examine forms of participation that challenge traditional top-down models and focus on local knowledge and community agency. In Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico, a co-designed environmental data dashboard with Pueblo members demonstrates how integrating Indigenous knowledge can enhance disaster preparedness. The Soldados Dam case in Ecuador shows how power imbalances drive community stakeholders to become protestors, emphasizing the need for adaptive engagement to prevent conflict. In Pajaro, California, a marginalized community’s …

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Abstract
This study is a reflective analysis of the discursive construction of the social studies and the teaching of history from medieval scholasticism, through Enlightenment humanism, and into our posthumanist landscape. As an exploration of the foundations of Western thought, with an emphasis on humanism as it has historically affected construction of the social studies, this investigation focuses on theorists, praxis, curriculum development, and teacher identity. My research examined the pedagogical and curriculum choices for the teaching of history along with the intersection of the humanities and humanism from the Enlightenment through the criticalities of the 20th century, and into …
