The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson Jan 2024

The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The fourth-century church complex at ‘Ain el-Gedida, in the Dakhleh Oasis, provides a striking case study for the integration of kitchen work into social and religious space in late antiquity. Its unique features – both sociological and archaeological – reflect a dynamic, rough-and-tumble integration that both protects the sacred space of the nave and centres the productive labour of cooking. This article analyses the anteroom/kitchen B6 from the perspectives of space syntax, the communicative landscape of labour, and the sociology of graffiti. While it may have been designed as a transitional zone or service auxiliary for the primary public spaces …

Charleston And Savannah: The Rise, Fall, And Reinvention Of Two Rival Cities, Marissa Jenrich Jan 2024

Charleston And Savannah: The Rise, Fall, And Reinvention Of Two Rival Cities, Marissa Jenrich

Civil War Book Review

In Charleston and Savannah, planner and independent scholar Thomas D. Wilson builds upon ground laid by his earlier books to offer an insightful and comprehensive comparison of two of the Lowcountry’s most historic cities. In The Oglethorpe Plan (2015) and The Ashley Cooper Plan (2016), Wilson highlights how seventeenth and eighteenth-century urban planning helped shape the politics, economics, and culture of Savannah and Charleston, respectively, as well as how these early foundations continue to influence the experiences of city residents and visitors in our contemporary moment. The present volume extends the contributions of the author’s previous works, arguing that …

Environmental History In Focus, Kennon H. Keiser Jr. Jan 2024

Environmental History In Focus, Kennon H. Keiser Jr.

Civil War Book Review

The book reviews in this winter 2024 issue of the Civil War Book Review emphasize the role of the environment during the Civil War Era. While our two feature essays take us out of the realm of environmental history and into the world of politics, the primary focus of this winter issue is the role of nature in history. In recent years, historians have added to our knowledge of the environment’s role in the past. Nowhere is this more clear than in the Civil War Era. As historian Stephen Berry explained, “Like the Columbian Exchange, the Civil War was a …

The Key To The Shenandoah Valley: Geography And The Civil War Struggle For Winchester, Johnathan M. Ward Jan 2024

The Key To The Shenandoah Valley: Geography And The Civil War Struggle For Winchester, Johnathan M. Ward

Civil War Book Review

The Key to the Shenandoah Valley offers a substantial military study of the topographical and environmental features surrounding the town of Winchester, Virginia during the Civil War. Edward McCaul focuses on six specific battles for control over the town of Winchester, but he examines these military struggles in a much larger context to indicate how the geography of the Valley was crucial to Civil War strategy. In so doing, he effectively combines environmental history, military history, and political history to reveal the importance of Winchester and its terrain.

Empire Of Brutality: Enslaved People And Animals In The British Atlantic World, Owen Clow Jan 2024

Empire Of Brutality: Enslaved People And Animals In The British Atlantic World, Owen Clow

Civil War Book Review

Empire of Brutality: Enslaved People and Animals in the British Atlantic World, Christopher Michael Blakley’s first book and a revision of their 2019 dissertation, traces how British slaveowners distinguished between people, animals, and those persons who, through enslavement, occupied a position “in-between,” and how that process of dehumanization was molded by the material human-animal relationships that structured Atlantic slavery.

Nitrogen Application Timing And Cereal Rye (Secale Cereale L.) Cover Crop Influence Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Graig Reicks Jan 2024

Nitrogen Application Timing And Cereal Rye (Secale Cereale L.) Cover Crop Influence Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Graig Reicks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dryland contributions to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are increased by N fertilizer applications and high soil water contents. Fertilizer timing and spring growth of cover crops prior to cash crop planting were investigated in separate studies to examine impacts on overall GHG emissions using a near continuous measurement system. There was a significant interaction between N fertilizer rate (0 vs. 224 kg N ha-1 surface-applied as urea) and application date (p= 0.01) for CO2 emissions. This interaction occurred because N fertilizer increased CO2 emissions by 35% for the 21 d interval following early spring application. When application was delayed until …

Species Distribution Modeling Of Aquilegia Brevistyla (Ranunculaceae): A Critically Imperiled Black Hills Disjunct Species, Eric Daniel Puetz Jan 2024

Species Distribution Modeling Of Aquilegia Brevistyla (Ranunculaceae): A Critically Imperiled Black Hills Disjunct Species, Eric Daniel Puetz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unchecked human activity is contributing to rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions, changes in land use, altered disturbance/fire regimes, spread of invasive species, and loss of biological diversity and related breakdown of ecosystem services. Additionally, climatic shifts may lead to phenological mismatches between species and their environments if these changes outpace a species’ ability to adapt or migrate to a more suitable habitat. Isolated mountain populations are particularly threatened by unpredictable climatic conditions, as they may have limited migration corridors and often lower levels of genetic diversity to move or adapt, respectively. As these negative feedbacks compound on the landscape, …

Challenges And Opportunities In Sustainability Reporting: A Focus On Small And Medium Enterprises (Smes), Santi Setyaningsih, Rosita Widjojo, Peter Kelle

Faculty Publications

The purpose of the study was to observe how Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) struggle to develop the sustainability reports that are today important and required by consumers. The rationale is that the sustainability report is influenced by governance practices, social responsibility, and environmental impact. The research successfully summarizes the barriers from 37 influential sustainability report papers by employing a thorough systematic literature review. It was based on 6 well-known databases with the limitation of exclusion criteria such as 11 years of research (2012–2023), used English, and more than 4 pages articles. According to the findings of this literature review …

Upper Bounds For The Lagrangian Cobordism Relation On Legendrian Links, Joshua M. Sabloff, David Shea Vela-Vick, C. M.Michael Wong Jan 2024

Upper Bounds For The Lagrangian Cobordism Relation On Legendrian Links, Joshua M. Sabloff, David Shea Vela-Vick, C. M.Michael Wong

Faculty Publications

Lagrangian cobordism induces a preorder on the set of Legendrian links in any contact 3–manifold. We show that any finite collection of null-homologous Legendrian links in a contact 3–manifold with a common rotation number has an upper bound with respect to the preorder. In particular, we construct an exact Lagrangian cobordism from each element of the collection to a common Legendrian link. This construction allows us to define a notion of minimal Lagrangian genus between any two null-homologous Legendrian links with a common rotation number.

Regional Economic Integration And Its Implication On Exports In The Common Market For Eastern And Southern Africa(Comesa) Region (1980-2010), Tom Mwebaze, Eria Hisali, Henry Tumwebaze Jan 2024

Regional Economic Integration And Its Implication On Exports In The Common Market For Eastern And Southern Africa(Comesa) Region (1980-2010), Tom Mwebaze, Eria Hisali, Henry Tumwebaze

Journal of African Trade

One of the major development challenges facing Africa has been the small and fragmented economies with low incomes and low levels of intra-regional trade. To foster economic growth and promote intra-regional exports, Africa has witnessed renewed momentum for regional integration, in particular trade among COMESA countries. The present study employs fixed effects, random effects, and instrumental variables GMM regressions to estimate an augmented trade gravity model. We find that the formation of the COMESA trading bloc has promoted intra-regional exports. This finding suggests that to enhance export flows in the region, the process of economic integration should be deepened.

Data Regulation And Digital Services Trade In Africa, Erik Van Der Marel Jan 2024

Data Regulation And Digital Services Trade In Africa, Erik Van Der Marel

Journal of African Trade

Using a structural gravity model, this paper assesses whether data-related regulations for 31 African countries have an impact on bilateral trade in digital services. Controlling for all possible directions of fixed effects, this paper finds that local storage requirements and regulations requiring partner countries to have similar privacy laws in place are associated with lower imports in digital services between Africa and partner countries. By contrast, this paper also finds that the requirement for similar privacy conditions by partner countries is associated with higher exports in digital services for African countries with trading partners. This export effect is driven by …

Feminist Geography: Impact And Inclusion In Geographical Research, Michael Atuahene Djan

Nebraska Anthropologist

Feminist theories have significantly influenced the field of geography, challenging traditional notions of objectivity and shedding light on the intricate relationships between place, gender, and society. The emergence of feminist geography has been crucial in advocating for the inclusion of women's perspectives, countering historical marginalization in academic debates. This systematic review aims to summarize and assess the impact of feminist theory on geography, exploring topics such as gendered spaces, feminist methodologies, and the integration of women's voices in research. Utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Checklist, the study employed a thematic analysis of secondary sources. …

Inter- And Intra-Observer Error In Forensic Anthropology: Based Upon Langley Et Al. 2016 Data Collection Procedures For Forensic Skeletal Material 2.0 For The Cranium And Femur, Maggie M. Klemm, Dakota L. Taylor

Nebraska Anthropologist

Following the Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals (1993) ruling three decades ago, guidelines were established for determining the reliability and validity of expert testimony in court. These guidelines include considerations of whether the theory and methodologies employed have been tested, the establishment of potential or known error rates, and the existence and maintenance of the standards (Christensen, 2004). Testifying in court as an expert witness has become a critical role as a forensic anthropologist. As such, the methodologies, techniques, and standards utilized by forensic anthropologists must be carefully considered and adhere to the Daubert guidelines within the court system. One …

Is The Women's Treaty A Paper Tiger? Indian Courts' Application Of The United Nations Treaty, Amanda L. Stephens Jan 2024

Is The Women's Treaty A Paper Tiger? Indian Courts' Application Of The United Nations Treaty, Amanda L. Stephens

Faculty Articles

This Article examines whether the United Nations ("U.N.") Treaty, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women ("CEDAW'), is a "paper tiger"-a law that seems powerful but is in fact weak and ineffectual. While some scholars question the Treaty's effectiveness based on statistical studies, others point to legal reforms in state parties as evidence of its success. Neither provides a nuanced middle ground by examining the CEDAW at a micro rather than a macro level. This Article fills this gap by conducting a qualitative analysis of 10 Indian judicial opinions. Specifically, the Article explores how the …

Embodied Ecologies And Legal Wars: The Use Of Force, Ukraine, And Feminist Perspectives On International Law, Gina Heathcote Jan 2024

Embodied Ecologies And Legal Wars: The Use Of Force, Ukraine, And Feminist Perspectives On International Law, Gina Heathcote

Saint Louis University Law Journal

In this article, I examine the international law on the use of force alongside a feminist analysis of the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine. I draw on records of mushroom foraging to evidence how everyday practices of communities are destroyed by military aggression that disrupts the embodied ecologies reproduced in intergenerational human and nonhuman encounters. The mushrooms foraged in Ukraine, the mushrooms destroyed during military encounters, and the mushrooms growing beside land mines provide an aperture for shifting both feminist and international legal accounts of armed conflict. I argue that ecologies of harm produce means to understand the gendered violence …

The Demanding Idea Of Consent To International Law, Jean D'Aspremont Jan 2024

The Demanding Idea Of Consent To International Law, Jean D'Aspremont

Saint Louis University Law Journal

The concept of consenting to international law is no simple idea. It rests on sophisticated discursive moves. This article seeks to unpack five of the main discursive moves witnessed in literature and case-law discussing consent to international law. This article argues that these five specific discursive moves are performed, as is claimed here, by almost anyone analyzing the question of consent to international law, be such engagement on the more orthodox side or a critique from the argumentative side of the spectrum. These five discursive moves are (1) the reproduction of a very modernist understanding of authority, (2) the constitution …

Debunking The Narrowness Narrative In Lgbtq Religious Exemption Claims, Kyle C. Velte Jan 2024

Debunking The Narrowness Narrative In Lgbtq Religious Exemption Claims, Kyle C. Velte

Saint Louis University Law Journal

In three recent cases—Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, and 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis—the U.S. Supreme Court held in favor of a conservative Christian claimant who sought a religious exemption, reasoning that the First Amendment’s Free Exercise or Free Speech clause exempted the claimant from complying with a validly enacted antidiscrimination provision barring discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Many legal scholars and commentators have decried these decisions as radically altering First Amendment law at the expense of LGBTQ civil rights. In contrast, many national LGBTQ …

The Strange Persistence Of Originalism, Mark A. Hannah, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2024

The Strange Persistence Of Originalism, Mark A. Hannah, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Saint Louis University Law Journal

Originalism has positioned itself as the au courant doctrine of legal interpretation. Proponents argue that originalism is a core element of our democratic identity and should be adopted by every judge. The originalist tenet—that the meaning of a legal text is the ordinary meaning the text had at the time of its enactment—purportedly provides an objective basis for judging with integrity. Despite originalists’ grandiose claims, critics have lodged many well-reasoned objections that problematize originalists’ goals and methods. Why, then, has originalism gained such widespread prominence? In this article, we offer a rhetorical analysis that explains its ascendance and strange persistence. …

Assessment Of The Ecological Integrity Of Two Wetland Sites Within Eastern Michigan University’S Fish Lake Environmental Education Center (Fleec), Brianna Rice

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Wetland ecosystems function as reservoirs of biodiversity for both terrestrial and aquatic organisms, and are among the most vulnerable ecosystems to degradation. The ecological integrity of two wetlands at Eastern Michigan University’s Fish Lake Environmental Education Center, a bog and one vernal pool, was assessed. Plant species richness was used to conduct Floristic Quality Assessments (FQA) using the coefficient of conservatism and wetland indicator status for each species. The Michigan Rapid Assessment Method (MiRAM) was conducted as a more comprehensive assessment of each ecosystem. The bog had an FQA of 31.6 and a MiRAM: 81/100, representing high-quality wetland conditions. The …
