The Fourth World Approach: A Challenge Or An Extension To Twail?, Vineet Tayal
The Fourth World Approach: A Challenge Or An Extension To Twail?, Vineet Tayal
National Law School of India Review
The Fourth World Approach to International Law (‘FWAIL’) is the new formation of a critical methodology for analysing the international law framework. The idea of ‘us’ in international law, paves the way for the discrimin ation of the ‘others’ in international law. The Third World Approach to International Law (‘TWAIL’) though claiming to include all the ‘others’ of international law, fails to include the concerns of all the marginalised and excluded ‘others’. TWAIL is focused on these ‘others’ as a homogenous group and thereby neglects the marginalisation of the marginalised. FWAIL insists on the development of a new language of …

Oral Cancer Inequalities: Unmasking Health Disparities Of Vulnerable Populations In The U.S., Harold Nii-Aponsah
Oral Cancer Inequalities: Unmasking Health Disparities Of Vulnerable Populations In The U.S., Harold Nii-Aponsah
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Oral health disparities remain a persistent and pressing public health issue in the United States, with access to dental care and outcomes disproportionately affected by socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, and insurance coverage. This three paper format dissertation highlights various aspects of disparities that do exist in oral health cancer incidence across the United States. The first paper utilizes data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program to analyze 19,378 invasive Oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers (OCPC) cases diagnosed between 2018 and 2021, categorized by HPV status. Findings highlight that HPV-positive OCPCs are more prevalent among males, individuals aged …

Quantifying The Influence Of The Madden-Julian Oscillation On Rainfall Extremes During The Northeast Monsoon Season Of The Philippines, Lyndon Mark P. Olaguera, John A. Manalo, Alwin Bathan, Jun Matsumoto
Physics Faculty Publications
This study investigates the impact of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) on the extreme rainfall events across 11 eastern coastal stations during the northeast monsoon season (November to March) over the Philippines from 1979 to 2019. The contribution of synoptic systems to these extreme rainfall events such as tropical cyclones (TCs), low-pressure systems (LPS), cold surges (CS), and other disturbances as they coincide with a strong and active MJO were quantified. The results show that the probability of extreme rainfall occurrence increases first to as much as 20% in the southernmost stations in Phase 4. Then, it increases to more than …

Background
Bowel ultrasonography (BUS) is emerging as a promising noninvasive tool for assessing disease activity in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of BUS in IBD patients against the gold standard diagnostic method, standard colonoscopy.
Methods
Major databases were searched from inception to May 2023 for studies on BUS diagnostic accuracy in IBD. Outcomes of interest were pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV), and negative (NPV) predictive values. Endoscopic confirmation served as ground truth. Standard meta-analysis methods with a random-effects model and I2 statistics were applied. Risk of bias was assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic …

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is an independent risk factor for mortality and increases the health care burden for patients with persistent kidney dysfunction and maintenance dialysis. Sub-Saharan Africa has a high number of poorly controlled chronic illnesses, economic inequalities, …
Ambient Temperature Modelling With Ecostress And Private Weather Stations, Gaurav Khatri
Ambient Temperature Modelling With Ecostress And Private Weather Stations, Gaurav Khatri
Theses
This thesis explores the development and application of a novel data architecture for predicting ambient temperatures across US cities, focusing on integrating multi-source data i.e. ECOSTRESS land surface temperatures, urban surface properties, and crowdsourced weather data. The methodology is designed for scalability and adaptability across different urban regions, employing rigorous data quality control to enhance prediction accuracy. The validation of this model across diverse urban settings, demonstrated through rigorous RMSE comparisons and spatial mapping, validates its superiority over traditional models. Through experiments in diverse climatic conditions in Madison, Wisconsin, and Las Vegas, Nevada, the study assesses the model’s generalizability and …
Phylogeography, Speciation, And Cryptic Diversity In The Cave Springtail Pseudosinella Spinosa (Entomobryomorpha: Entomobryidae) From The Interior Low Plateau And Appalachian Valley & Ridge Karst Regions, Brendan Cramphorn
Theses
Caves offer a unique opportunity to study the ecology and evolution of life in extreme environments, particularly with respect to understanding patterns of diversity. Most cave-obligate species are dispersal limited and have restricted ranges, often endemic to a single or a few cave systems. However, a few species have particularly broad distributions suggesting that they either are not dispersal limited or perhaps represent a species complex of morphological similar but genetically distinct species. In this thesis, I explore morphological variation, phylogeography, and possibly cryptic diversity in Pseudosinella spinosa, a cave collembolan (springtail) that inhabits the Interior Low Plateau and Appalachian …

A Multi-Decadal Analysis Of Urban Heat And Pollution Islands In New Delhi, India, Saumya Omala Yamineni
A Multi-Decadal Analysis Of Urban Heat And Pollution Islands In New Delhi, India, Saumya Omala Yamineni
Theses
New Delhi, India's capital, is a mega-city with complex urban environments and significant Urban Heat Island (UHI) and Urban Pollution Island (UPI) footprints. Over the past two decades, the city has experienced steady urban growth, increased land cover and green spaces, and rising pollution from local and interstate sources. Currently, a comprehensive multi-decadal analysis of the co-evolution of UHI and UPI in New Delhi is lacking. Such an analysis was conducted using a fusion of in situ data, NASA satellite products, and MERRA-2 reanalysis, reveals: 1) Significant trends of daytime cooling (decreasing by ~ 0.16 ∘C), nighttime warming (increasing by …
Exploring The Intersectional And Spatial Implications Of The Police Power To Search Dwellings Incident To Lawful Arrest: A Comment On R. V. Stairs, Danardo S. Jones
Exploring The Intersectional And Spatial Implications Of The Police Power To Search Dwellings Incident To Lawful Arrest: A Comment On R. V. Stairs, Danardo S. Jones
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper examines whether the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in R. v. Stairs to alter the baseline police power to conduct searches incident to lawful arrest adequately addresses issues of intersectionality and spatiality. The paper’s principal focus is on race and class, which is analyzed through the lens of critical theories around race and space/spatialization, drawing on Black geographies and Critical Race Theory (“CRT”). It will also consider critical legal theories that urge us to conduct a distributional analysis of the differential impacts of legal standards. Importantly, the paper considers how courts do and should conceptualize privacy and domesticity …
Accessing Nephi’S Bountiful: A New Proposal For Reaching Irreantum, Warren P. Aston
Accessing Nephi’S Bountiful: A New Proposal For Reaching Irreantum, Warren P. Aston
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Many Latter-day Saint scholars recognize that an excellent candidate for Nephi’s Bountiful is found at the inlet Khor Kharfot in southern Oman at the end of the lengthy Wadi Sayq. Many researchers have reasonably assumed that Lehi’s eastward travel from Nahom must have led to Wadi Sayq, which then leads directly to Khor Kharfot. However, there is a second route, through Wadi Kharfot, that leads to Khor Kharfot, joining Wadi Sayq near the inlet. Although almost unknown, this second wadi could also have offered a plausible route with some advantages to travelers arriving from the interior desert plateau. Specifics and …
