Historical Reappearance: Tracing The Impacts Of Argentina's Los Desaparecidos To The Rise Of President Javier Milei, Analise Sofia Chain Jan 2024

Historical Reappearance: Tracing The Impacts Of Argentina's Los Desaparecidos To The Rise Of President Javier Milei, Analise Sofia Chain

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In 1976 the Argentine government was taken over by a right wing military junta, attempting to “save” their country from communism. Military officials kidnapped, tortured and killed between 10,000 and 30,000 Argentine citizens, who were thought of as “guerrillas” supporting the leftist government and the late president Juan Perón. These victims are regarded as the disappeared, or Los Desaparecidos; due to the fact their families had no knowledge of where their loved ones were taken, or what was happening to them. Many of these young, liberal advocates were never seen or heard from again, their remains lost to history, and …

The Inyo Mountains in Inyo County, California, are an arid mountain range located between the eastern Sierra Nevada and Death Valley National Park. The study site is ca. 433 km2 (167 sq mi), ranging in elevation from 549 to 2955 m (1800 to 9694 ft), and comprises the southern extent of the Inyo Mountains where the Great Basin Desert and Mojave Desert bioregions meet. This area had been poorly represented by botanical collections despite an abundance of distinctive biogeographic features and high diversity in rare and endemic plant species. The objectives of this study were to complete a specimen-based, …

The Rise Of Counter-Terrorism And The Demise Of Human Rights, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Jan 2024

The Rise Of Counter-Terrorism And The Demise Of Human Rights, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

Emory International Law Review

This lecture addressed the consolidation and expansion of counter-terrorism norms and institutions since 9/11. The rise of counterterrorism has enabled the consolidation of autocracy, sustained democratic backsliding and undermined the capacity of civil society to function across the globe. The impact on human rights has been extensive and highly detrimental to the most vulnerable individuals and groups across the world. Drawing on my work as United Nations Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights since my 2017 appointment, the lecture shows the hard choices that must be made nationally and globally to reverse these trends.

Fugitive And Sumud Encounters: Geographies Of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal, Anna Babboni Jan 2024

Fugitive And Sumud Encounters: Geographies Of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal, Anna Babboni

Scripps Senior Theses

“Fugitive and Sumud Encounters: Geographies of Black-Palestinian Transnational Refusal” explores the parallel practices of Palestinian sumud, a “political-psycho-affective subjectivity” or philosophy of refusal that roughly translates to “steadfastness” from Arabic, and Black fugitivity, the practice by which Black folk find freedom and escape from the continual construction of Blackness as fungible object, rooted in histories of maroonage. Both practices of refusal are historically and spatially contingent, responding to conditions of settler colonial and anti-Black enclosure. However, when put into conversion, sumud and fugitivity are strikingly familiar in their methods of refusing liberal enclosure. In their overlap, sumud and fugitivity lay …

Is Garcetti Too Cool For School?: Why Garcetti V. Ceballos Should Not Apply To School Teachers, Jordan Zaia Jan 2024

Is Garcetti Too Cool For School?: Why Garcetti V. Ceballos Should Not Apply To School Teachers, Jordan Zaia

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

The First Amendment is implicated by students and teachers every day in public schools. For years, courts followed the test established in Pickering v. Board of Education to analyze free speech claims for public school teachers. However, teachers’ protections were changed in 2006 when the U.S. Supreme Court decided Garcetti v. Ceballos. Since then, the circuits have inconsistently applied this test in cases relating to education. With the circuit split and high-profile cases rising in the federal circuits, the Supreme Court may have an opportunity to resolve the issue.

This Note advocates for the Supreme Court to rule that Garcetti …

Expanding Our Honors Neighborhood: Teaching In And About Jails And Prisons, Victoria M. Bryan, Owen Cantrell

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Dr. Ada Long (1945–2024) advocated for equal access to quality education. Authors suggest that her reflections on neighborhoods, community, and intentional inclusion were not one-off musings but rather indicative of how she saw her responsibility as an educator. Drawing on Long’s establishment of a lecture series that brought faculty into a local Alabama prison to share research with incarerated students, this essay presents firsthand experiences teaching honors courses in prison, particularly those offered at Walker State Prison as part of Georgia State University’s Prison Education Project (2016–2023). While honors colleges often build programs to be as community-centric as possible, authors …

Building, Dwelling, And Thinking With Ada Long, Lisa L. Coleman Jan 2024

Building, Dwelling, And Thinking With Ada Long, Lisa L. Coleman

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

In response to Dr. Ada Long’s (1945–2024) insistence that political conversation is key to teaching and service, both of which inform each other, the author contemplates the personal impact and evolving cultural import of Martin Heidegger. Using Heidegger’s “Building Dwelling Thinking” (1971) as touchstone, the author reflects on the conception of humans as “near dwellers,” or neighbors who “build” because they “dwell,” and considers the weight this idea carried as a graduate student and again as an instructor of Advanced Composition. The author describes a teaching methodology that used Heidegger’s essay as a lens through which students might view, read, …

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin Jan 2024

The Time War: Comparatively Analyzing The Process Of Settler Colonialism & The Importance Of Personal Record, Naomi Hardin

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

In this work, I argue for the necessity of framing settler colonialism as an ongoing process of exploitation and genocide, rather than an event of the past. Understanding settler colonialism as ongoing allows us to recognize how white supremacy utilizes direct and indirect forms of violence to not just occupy land but extract resources, build infrastructure that ensures its survival, and displace indigenous peoples. I offer first a sketch of settler colonialism as it is happening in Palestine, Algeria, and the Americas. I engage with books and research essays to think comparatively about these phenomena & further reveal the legacies …

Battles, Bustles, And Ballots: The Struggle For Michigan Women's Enfranchisement, Anna Bennett Jan 2024

Battles, Bustles, And Ballots: The Struggle For Michigan Women's Enfranchisement, Anna Bennett

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The struggle for women’s rights was long fought throughout American history and Michigan played a vital role in the movement’s success. This thesis explores three monumental eras that shaped the struggle for women’s suffrage in Michigan, detailing the evolution from the 1860s Civil War Era through the late 19th and early 20th century Progressive Era. The first era highlights how the Civil War provided women opportunities to challenge prevailing gender conventions and express political opinions. The second era examines the 1874 election, when suffrage was on the ballot but ultimately defeated, largely due to the Beecher-Tilton Scandal that tarnished the …

Characteristics Of Active Deformation, Fault Interaction, And Earthquake Triggering In A Rapidly-Deforming Complex Normal Fault Network (South-West Türkiye), Manuel-Lukas Diercks Jan 2024

Characteristics Of Active Deformation, Fault Interaction, And Earthquake Triggering In A Rapidly-Deforming Complex Normal Fault Network (South-West Türkiye), Manuel-Lukas Diercks

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Despite often being overshadowed by disastrous earthquakes on subduction zones and continental transform faults, normal faulting earthquakes frequently cause severe destruction and casualties. Understanding earthquake occurrence and determining those faults most at risk of rupturing in destructive earthquakes is crucial to prevent disasters. A key approach to understanding earthquake occurrence is to understand how stress and strain develop through a fault system over the earthquake cycle. In this thesis, Coulomb stress modelling, SAR interferometry, and field work are combined with a comprehensive literature review to study active deformation, fault interactions, and earthquake triggering mechanisms in complex normal fault networks, with …

Modeling Health Insurance Premium Using Bayesian Hierarchical Models, Bennedict Kongyir, Emil Agbemade

Data Science and Data Mining

Insurance pricing requires pragmatism and creativity due to the unpredictable nature of risk [3]. This paper explores Bayesian hierarchical models to model health insurance premiums using individual and group predictors like demographics, health status, and geography. Data from Kaggle on health insurance policyholders was utilized, with prior distributions enhancing model interpretability and credibility. Bayesian models improve predictive accuracy and provide valuable insights for actuaries and policymakers, highlighting the signifcant impact of factors such as age and BMI on premium pricing.

The Impact Of Dissolved Organic Matter On Photodegradation Rates, Byproduct Formations, And Degradation Pathways For Two Neonicotinoid Insecticides In Simulated River Waters, Josephus F. Borsuah, Tiffany L. Messer, Daniel D. Snow, Steven D. Comfort, Shannon Bartelt-Hunt

UK CARES Faculty Publications

The influences of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on neonicotinoid photochemical degradation and product formation in natural waters remain unclear, potentially impacting the sustainability of river systems. Therefore, our overall objective was to investigate the photodegradation mechanisms and phototransformation byproducts of two neonicotinoid pesticides, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam, under simulated sunlight at the microcosm scale, to assess the implications of DOM for insecticide degradation in rivers. Direct and indirect photolysis were investigated using twelve water matrices to identify possible reaction pathways with two DOM sources and three quenching agents. Imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and potential degradants were measured, and reaction pathways identified. The photodegradation …
