The Watchmen In The Song Of Songs: An Intertextual Study, Gabriel Xavier Del Valle Jan 2024

The Watchmen In The Song Of Songs: An Intertextual Study, Gabriel Xavier Del Valle

Master's Theses

Problem

The watchmen are a shocking feature in the Song of Songs that have received limited exploration and research. Their dual nature in the Song of Songs is illustrated by their two responses to the women in the song; benign indifference illustrated in Song of Songs 3:1-5 and hostility exemplified in Song of Songs 5:2-8. This has led to a myriad of interpretations regarding their function and identity; however, none have been subject to a thorough examination. The watchmen have not been previously investigated as a potential metaphorical or symbolic representation of the brothers related to the woman in the …

Nurture And Harvest: A Continued Conversation With The Annotated Book Of Mormon, Kevin Christensen Jan 2024

Nurture And Harvest: A Continued Conversation With The Annotated Book Of Mormon, Kevin Christensen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Because Grant Hardy’s important book deliberately contextualizes the Book of Mormon in light of “the generally agreed upon findings of modern biblical scholars and historians,” it invites further discussion on points in which the Book of Mormon and other significant biblical scholars and historians challenge those findings. Hardy also declares that his commentary “is consistently focused on the plain meaning of the text,” which is understandably appealing, but which is in tension with Joseph Smith’s foundational observation that “the different teachers of the religion understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the …

The Role Of Local Knowledge In Climate Change Research, Ryan E. Mccoy Jan 2024

The Role Of Local Knowledge In Climate Change Research, Ryan E. Mccoy

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

This dissertation addresses the growing need within climate research for improvements in regional and local climate information. I argue that knowledge gaps in regional climate information constitute a form of climate injustice in which harm largely falls on regions most vulnerable to climate change. Moreover, I show that our current methods for garnering regional climate information fail to provide information on place-specific factors, such as local culture, socio-economic systems, and ecology, which mediate climate change impacts. In order to address these knowledge gaps, as well as provide information necessary for effective mitigation and adaptation, I argue for the inclusion of …

Bombazos Y Belonging: Exploring Belonging And Connection Between Latine Students Through Dance At A Pwi, Gabriella Batista Quintana Jan 2024

Bombazos Y Belonging: Exploring Belonging And Connection Between Latine Students Through Dance At A Pwi, Gabriella Batista Quintana

Theses & ETDs

By utilizing dance and performance ethnography in tandem with the practice of bomba (an Afro-Puerto Rican dance, genre, and drum), this thesis seeks to understand the themes of belonging and connection amongst Latine students at New College of Florida, a predominately White institution (PWI). How may dance act as a safe space, or counterspace, for students of marginalized identities to foster a sense of belonging? Can connecting to one another, despite our cultural differences within the Latine diaspora, lend itself to finding “home” in an otherwise hostile PWI? According to this study’s participants, finding familiar aspects of one’s culture amongst …

Youth Mental Health In Occupied Palestinian Territories, Ayah Saleh Jan 2024

Youth Mental Health In Occupied Palestinian Territories, Ayah Saleh

Theses & ETDs

Despite the pervasive presence of occupation and its potential ramifications on mental health, a notable gap in research exists concerning the specific impact of Israel’s occupation on Palestinian youth. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature, this study identifies key determinants of mental health and examines their manifestation within the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). Drawing upon established frameworks and empirical evidence, the research explores how factors such as violence, restricted movement, food and water insecurity, and inadequate sanitary infrastructure intersect to shape the mental well-being of Palestinian youth under occupation. For each of these major features of occupation, this thesis …

Reading As An Adventure: How Individualization In English Classrooms Uplifts Students, Scruffs O'Neil Jan 2024

Reading As An Adventure: How Individualization In English Classrooms Uplifts Students, Scruffs O'Neil

Theses & ETDs

Students deserve to have classrooms designed with their holistic needs in mind. Teachers should utilize pedagogical research to deliberately design their classrooms in a way that empowers student success. Structuring a classroom with these sentiments in mind reveals the benefits to students that pedagogically and psychologically sound educational activities provide. This thesis attempts to implement the pedagogical approach of active learning by developing a unit that relies on Reading Groups and Socratic Seminars. Reading Groups offer students the unique opportunity to engage with their choice in text; a common barrier for students in finding motivation for class readings. Additionally, Reading …

The Modern Political Revolution: Why Is Right Wing Populism So Successful In The Post-Industrial West, Isaac Presberg Jan 2024

The Modern Political Revolution: Why Is Right Wing Populism So Successful In The Post-Industrial West, Isaac Presberg

Theses & ETDs

The last 10-15 years has seen a rise in Populist Radical Right Parties (PRRPs) support in many “western” democracies. This has led to the obvious question of why these parties have seen such an explosion of support. Answering this question creates several frustrating dilemmas. To start off, each ascendant PRRP is situated in its own national context. Some are independent parties, such as the AFD in Germany, while others are factions that have gained power and influence within pre-existing parties, such as the rise of Donald Trump within the American Republican party. Not every PRRP has the same agenda, policy …

Decolonizing 20th Century Consumerism: Analyzing The Role Of Advertising In Amauta, Sam Roberts Jan 2024

Decolonizing 20th Century Consumerism: Analyzing The Role Of Advertising In Amauta, Sam Roberts

Undergraduate Review

In simplest terms, Amauta is a socialist revista (magazine) primarily conceived of and executed by Peruvian political activist José Carlos Mariátegui, with the principal ambition of providing a space for the organic and spontaneous promulgation of a uniquely Peruvian form of Marxism. It is exceedingly difficult, however, to discuss Mariátegui’s brainchild in simple terms. Beyond its role as a socialist publication, Amauta was an arbiter of culture, at once negotiating Mariátegui’s passion for the development of a Peruvian national identity with his efforts at integrating Peru into the revolutionary zeitgeist of the early 20th century; it was a Spanish-language codex …

Carceral Connections: The Role Of Policing In The Management Of Public Housing In New York City, James Rodriguez Jan 2024

Carceral Connections: The Role Of Policing In The Management Of Public Housing In New York City, James Rodriguez

Publications and Research

Between 2006 and 2022, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) attempted to address the fiscal and infrastructural crises in public housing through a number of controversial privatization strategies. This contested push occurred alongside the pervasive role of policing in public housing. The New York Police Department utilizes several policing strategies specific to NYCHA communities, collaborating with the housing authority in the management of public housing residents. This article draws on qualitative content analysis of local policing strategies and public housing policy reforms in New York City to investigate how the state facilitates the displacement of disproportionately poor, non-white, public …

Weaving Community: The Manual Loom As Metaphor For Rupture And Repair, Farrah Cato, Prerana Choudhury Jan 2024

Weaving Community: The Manual Loom As Metaphor For Rupture And Repair, Farrah Cato, Prerana Choudhury

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The manual loom anchors women’s community and creative life in rural Assam. We explore this apparatus by extending definitions of the ‘digital’ and reconsidering the loom’s role as metaphor for both (dis)rupture and repair within the culturally diverse and bioculturally rooted lives of indigenous women in Assam. Our methods are based primarily on participatory research, community living, and slow travel undertaken by Prerana to remote parts of this northeastern state of India, juxtaposed with Farrah’s practical and theoretical approaches to technology. United by the recognition of how significant women’s lived histories and material production are, we reconsider the loom’s liminal …

The Touch And Breath Of Cloth: Folding And Unfolding Bedsheets With María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Theresa Downing Jan 2024

The Touch And Breath Of Cloth: Folding And Unfolding Bedsheets With María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Theresa Downing

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

María Magdalena Campos-Pons’ Spoken Softly with Mama (1998) is an immersive installation she created to commune with her enslaved Nigerian ancestors and extended family in Cuba, when she was living in the U.S. but separated from family due to the embargo. A monumental work in the artist’s oeuvre with slave ship motifs, glass clothes irons, ironing boards, video projection, and sound, the dream-like installation transmits Campos-Pons’ thoughts like a letter written in cotton and silk. The installation centers her female family members, who worked as domestic laborers, with portraits projected or printed upon the means of their employment: bedsheets and …

Effectiveness Of Municipal Collaboration For Watershed Management In The Southern Colorado River Basin, Sasha Geschwind Jan 2024

Effectiveness Of Municipal Collaboration For Watershed Management In The Southern Colorado River Basin, Sasha Geschwind

CGU Theses & Dissertations

There are mixed arguments about the best scale of government for providing various public goods and services. Specifically, the management of a watershed, which can be categorized as a common pool resource, is generally implemented at the local government scale via National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) permits as issued by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). A large body of literature argues for rethinking this scale because this does not match natural watershed boundaries. In this paper, I explore the question: Does collaboration, and type of collaboration, among jurisdictions within a watershed …

Labor Mobility And The Problems Of Modern Policing, John Rappaport, Jonathan Masur, Aurelie Ouss Jan 2024

Labor Mobility And The Problems Of Modern Policing, John Rappaport, Jonathan Masur, Aurelie Ouss

Articles

We document and discuss the implications of a striking feature of modern American policing: the stasis of police labor forces. Using an original employment dataset assembled through public records requests, we show that, after the first few years on a job, officers rarely change employers, and intermediate officer ranks are filled almost exclusively through promotion rather than lateral hiring. Policing is like a sports league, if you removed trades and free agency and left only the draft in place.

We identify both nonlegal and legal causes of this phenomenon—ranging from geographic monopolies to statutory and collectively bargained rules about pensions, …

Dynamic Diffusion, Adam Chilton, Anu Bradford, Katerina Linos Jan 2024

Dynamic Diffusion, Adam Chilton, Anu Bradford, Katerina Linos

Articles

Research on legal diffusion typically focuses on laws’ initial adoption and ignores their later evolution. We develop a typology of three subsequent diffusion patterns: convergence, when countries revise laws to move closer to leading regulators; customization, when countries revise laws to move away from leading regulators; and stagnation, when countries cease legislating, leaving initially adopted laws in place. We then propose a general theory suggesting that economic size and geographic distance from leading regulators predict which of the three patterns countries follow. We explore this theory with case studies on the dynamic diffusion of antitrust laws in Russia, Colombia, and …

Fostering Student Connection To The Library: Personal Librarians And First-Year Experience, Loren Mixon, Tracy Conner Jan 2024

Fostering Student Connection To The Library: Personal Librarians And First-Year Experience, Loren Mixon, Tracy Conner

Library Faculty Publications

The personal librarian program was embedded into the First Year Student Success classes at Kankakee Community College to ensure freshman instruction in resources and supports available within the library while focusing on creating campus community connections with librarians. As a part of this collaboration, new library curriculum was created to involve students in the library using a variety of different modalities. Students completed an asynchronous assignment connecting typical syllabus elements to library services that may help, a class tour with basic book searching activity, and then a one-on-one meeting with their personal librarian who walked them through database research basics …

The Interplay Of Rightsizing And Growth Strategies In Legacy Urban Communities, Alfonso Riera Jan 2024

The Interplay Of Rightsizing And Growth Strategies In Legacy Urban Communities, Alfonso Riera

Planning Dissertations - Archive

This research investigates the rightsizing strategies of a mid-sized, shrinking city in Ohio, to explore the tensions and complexities that rightsizing efforts introduce into the urban governance landscape. The questions that guide this research draw on the theories of rightsizing to reveal the ways in which rightsizing efforts implemented by city officials enabled economic revitalization as well as cultivated a pipeline to urban growth efforts. The research findings contribute to our understanding of rightsizing by revealing the ways that shrinking cities struggle to fully adopt rightsizing as its own end goal, rather than a means to a growth-oriented urban landscape. …

Socioeconomic Impacts Of The Employment Sub-Centers On The Surrounding Areas In The Dallas- Fort Worth Metropolitan Area (Dfw) From 2002 To 2020, Aliasghar Rahimioun

Planning Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation analyzes the effects of the employment sub-centers on the surrounding area. It does so by examining the percentage changes in workers' socioeconomic characteristics such as age, earnings, and industry sectors from 2002 to 2020 while controlling for job and population density. The data for this study is derived from the Workplace Area Characteristics (WAC) data set.

The dissertation aims to answer five crucial research questions. These questions delve into how the percentage change of socioeconomic characteristics of employment sub-centers affects households' income, ethnicity, age, and gender in the surrounding area of the employment sub-centers. The study also seeks …

Exploring Black Women Initiative Programs At Community Colleges: Potential Possibilities For Institutional Support, Erin K. Lewis Jan 2024

Exploring Black Women Initiative Programs At Community Colleges: Potential Possibilities For Institutional Support, Erin K. Lewis

Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive

The existing literature lacks sufficient exploration of Black women’s experiences of a sense of belonging in institutional-sponsored programs centered around their Black and Woman identities at community colleges. Using a collective case study qualitative methodology, the purpose of this study was to understand Black women's experiences of a sense of belonging in institutional-sponsored initiative programs centered around their Black and woman identities at community colleges. The research question guiding this study is: How do Black women experience a sense of belonging in initiative programs centered around their Black and woman identities at community colleges? And to what extent? The conceptual …
