Positioning, Navigation, And Timing (Pnt) Study For Select Multibody Environments, Kaitlin R. Roberts

Theses and Dissertations

In the renewed 21st-century race to the Moon, the demand for heightened mission capabilities in the cislunar region, lunar surface, and beyond is imperative. With an escalating number and complexity of lunar missions, persistent positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capabilities are becoming paramount. This thesis presents innovative lunar PNT architectures designed to provide continuous coverage of the lunar South Pole, near-continuous coverage of the entire lunar surface, and coverage of the Earth-Moon Corridor. As space faring countries advance from lunar exploration to Mars, similar assets are essential for astronaut exploration in this extraterrestrial environment. Additionally, this thesis introduces and meticulously …

Preliminary Assessment Of Cislunar Disposal Orbits, Ryan M. Sargent Mar 2024

Preliminary Assessment Of Cislunar Disposal Orbits, Ryan M. Sargent

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the disposal of end-of-life spacecraft from key orbits with a focus on minimizing delta-v expenditure and preventing debris propagation. Simulated Lyapunov and halo orbits around the L2 Lagrange point are analyzed for disposal feasibility. Both impulsive and continuous thrust methods are explored to achieve disposal trajectories. Continuous thrust will be modeled after a Hall thruster utilizing electric propulsion. Leveraging the Circular Restricted Three Body Problem framework, low delta-v cost trajectories are computed, with a multi-level correction algorithm optimizing total delta-v via heteroclinic connections. The study assesses various delta-v amounts for Earth-Moon system escape and evaluates the potential …

A Comparative Study Of The Business Models Used In The U.S. And Saudi Arabia Firms In Relation To Venture Capital, Abdulmajeed Ali Alkthiri Mar 2024

A Comparative Study Of The Business Models Used In The U.S. And Saudi Arabia Firms In Relation To Venture Capital, Abdulmajeed Ali Alkthiri

Theses and Dissertations

While venture capital (VC) has expanded globally, challenges in comparing international VC strategies remain due to data limitations and theoretical variability. This study contrasts VC investment philosophies, support mechanisms, and exit strategies in mature US firms with those in developing Saudi Arabia from 2016-2021. Analyzing fundraising, sector focus, deal volume, and exit outcomes, it finds significant differences attributed to ecosystem maturity, with some convergence in contracting and mentoring. The findings highlight the need for US VC models to adapt strategically in Islamic markets, suggesting regulatory reforms for market development. This research provides guidelines for effective cross-border VC strategy adaptation.

Within-Development Density And Housing Prices In Singapore, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu, Louisa Poco Mar 2024

Within-Development Density And Housing Prices In Singapore, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu, Louisa Poco

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper measures how much more households pay for less density in their immediate surroundings. Using transaction and administrative data and exploiting the introduction of a regulation that restricted the number of housing units for certain land lots, we find that households discount density: a 10% increase in within-development density decreases the price per square meter by 5%. Further, the mean price per square meter of the average development increased by 1%–3% after the regulation was introduced, while the amount of built-up space remained constant. The increase in total revenue suggests developers may underestimate the externality caused by density.

Siltation and the loss of hydropower reservoir capacity is a global challenge with a predicted 26 % loss of storage at the global scale by 2050. Like in many other Latin American contexts, soil erosion constitutes one of the most significant water pollution problems in Chile with serious siltation consequences downstream. Identifying the sources and drivers affecting hydropower siltation and water pollution is a critical need to inform adaptation and mitigation strategies especially in the context of changing climate regimes e.g. rainfall patterns. We investigated, at basin scale, the main sources of sediments delivered to one of the largest hydropower …

New Hurdles To Redistricting Reform: State Evasion, Moore, And Partisan Gerrymandering, Manoj Mate Mar 2024

New Hurdles To Redistricting Reform: State Evasion, Moore, And Partisan Gerrymandering, Manoj Mate

Journal Articles

Proponents of fair districting reforms continue to face challenges in seeking to address the problem of partisan gerrymandering. Even in states that have successfully enacted redistricting reforms, state actors have been able to evade compliance, and state courts have been unable to guarantee fair districts. In addition, the Supreme Court’s decision in Moore v. Harper could also limit state court efforts to guarantee fair districts. This Article argues that state evasion and Moore threaten to undermine the efficacy of fair districting norms recognized by state courts or enacted through either state political processes. Moore could create a one-way ratchet by …

The Effect Of Water Pollution Regulation On Prices: Evidence From Wisconsin’S Phosphorus Rule And Sewer Utility Bills, Andrew G. Meyer, Zach Raff Mar 2024

The Effect Of Water Pollution Regulation On Prices: Evidence From Wisconsin’S Phosphorus Rule And Sewer Utility Bills, Andrew G. Meyer, Zach Raff

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we estimate the consumer impacts of Wisconsin's “phosphorus rule”, which created the most stringent statewide water quality and effluent standards for phosphorus in the country. We examine how compliance with the rule affects real billing rates at sewer utilities in Wisconsin, providing the first empirical estimates of water pollution regulation on utility billing rates. We find that compliance with the phosphorous rule increases the average real sewer utility bill in our sample by 7–12%. Our results imply that sewer utilities pass through approximately $65.8 million to residential sewer rate payers annually, which is roughly ⅔ of the …

Recent advances in the field of immuno-oncology have brought transformative changes in the management of cancer patients. The immune profile of tumours has been found to have key value in predicting disease prognosis and treatment response in various cancers. Multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence have emerged as potent tools for the simultaneous detection of multiple protein biomarkers in a single tissue section, thereby expanding opportunities for molecular and immune profiling while preserving tissue samples. By establishing the phenotype of individual tumour cells when distributed within a mixed cell population, the identification of clinically relevant biomarkers with high-throughput multiplex immunophenotyping of tumour …

Background: The increased incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers has motivated efforts to optimise treatment for these patients with excellent prognosis. Validation of surrogates for overall survival could expedite the investigation of new therapies. We sought to evaluate candidate intermediate clinical endpoints in trials assessing definitive treatment of p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Methods: We did a retrospective review of five multicentre, randomised trials (NRG/RTOG 9003, 0129, 0234, 0522, and 1016) that tested radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy in patients (aged ≥18 years) with p16-positive localised head or neck squamous-cell carcinomas. Eight intermediate clinical endpoints were considered as …

The Class Of 2019: Academic Employment Prospects For Counselor Education Doctoral Graduates, Christopher Lawrence, Gregory Hatchett Feb 2024

The Class Of 2019: Academic Employment Prospects For Counselor Education Doctoral Graduates, Christopher Lawrence, Gregory Hatchett

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

The purpose of this investigation was to estimate the percentage of counselor education doctoral (CED) program graduates who attained faculty positions within two years of graduation and to compare the number of these graduates to the number of advertised faculty positions during this same timeframe. To do so, we used archival, publicly available data for graduates of CACREP-accredited CED programs during the 2018-2019 academic cycle (N = 314). Approximately two-fifths of these graduates had faculty positions. Graduation from a public university increased the odds of having any faculty post, whereas graduation from a public university and the Carnegie Classification of …

Danes In Argentina: The Emigration Story Of The Ambrosius Family, Inge Ambrosius

The Bridge

I have had a box of newspaper clippings, letters, pictures, books, and other materials about Danish immigrants in Argentina for many years. Many of my relatives live in Argentina, and the material was assembled by my grandmother and my father. When I retired from teaching high school history and geography, I finally had the time to look at the material. Among other things, the box contained the memoirs of my great-grandfather’s younger brother, Niels Jensen Ambrosius, “Memories of my life and whereabouts in Argentina.” They were written in 1951 when Niels was eighty-four years old. Reading them made me curious, …

Relocating Lubra Village And Visualizing Himalayan Flood Damages With Remote Sensing, Ronan Wallace, Yungdrung Tsewang Gurung, Ryan Kastner

Journal of Critical Global Issues

As weather patterns change worldwide, isolated communities impacted by climate change go unnoticed and we need community-driven solutions. In Himalayan Mustang, Nepal, indigenous Lubra Village faces threats of increasing flash flooding. After every flood, residual muddy sediment hardens across the riverbed like concrete, causing the riverbed elevation to rise. As elevation increases, sediment encroaches on Lubra’s agricultural fields and homes, magnifying flood vulnerability. In the last monsoon season alone, the Lubra community witnessed floods swallowing several agricultural fields and damaging two homes. One solution considers relocating the village to a new location entirely. However, relocation poses a challenging task, as …

Prioritizing Indigenous Participation And Compensation In Research, Amanda Sabin

Journal of Critical Global Issues

Throughout history, the dynamic between colonial entities and indigenous groups has been characterized by exploitation and power imbalance. Indigenous knowledge has the potential to positively impact the world, through medicinal breakthroughs, radical approaches to sustainability, cultural heritage, systems of learning and adaptation, and more. Particularly in the context of research, fields like anthropology, botany and pharmacology serve to benefit from indigenous knowledge, but these interactions cannot continue to be based on extraction at the cost of indigenous communities. This work will discuss the future of relationships between researchers and indigenous communities; how this power dynamic must be transformed into an …

Codariocalyx Gyroides- A New Forage Option For The Humid Tropics, B L. Maass, L H. Franco, G Ramirez, J E. Velásquez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The Southeast Asian shrub legume, Codariocalyx gyroides is adapted to acid, low-fertility soils with poor drainage. Data from 19 RIEPT (International Network for Evaluation of Tropical Pastures) trial sites conducted in the American humid and subhumid tropics were used to define the range of adaptation of C. gyroides. The results show that C. gyroides performs better under high rainfall conditions of the humid tropics with hardly any dry season, and it responds to soil fertility (Ca, P). Future research needs are identified. The release of a commercial cultivar in Colombia is being prepared.

No. 17: South-South Migration, Pandemic Precarity, And The Informal Food Sector In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The analysis of COVID-19 pandemic precarity in Africa should focus on the ways in which pre-pandemic migrant vulnerabilities were reconfigured in ways that weakened economic resiliency and reinforced disadvantage. This is the first paper to apply the concept of pandemic precarity to the impact of COVID-19 on migrants working in the informal food sector of African cities. The paper develops a new method for measuring pandemic precarity and applies this to data from a 2021 survey of migrant-owned informal food enterprises in the city of Cape Town. The Informal Pandemic Precarity Index (IPPI) and Informal Pandemic Precarity Scale (IPPS) are …

Collaborative Learning Management System With Analytical Insights: A Preliminary Study, Daniel Lai, Sook Ling Lew, Ooi Shih Yin

International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting

The mode of teaching and learning had been drastically changed over the decades. Therefore, one approach might not fit into all scenarios. Collaborative learning promotes collaboration between the students in completing given tasks with common goals. In this paper, problem statements were formed: (i) the collaboration between students and their teachers in the virtual learning environment has been at the bare minimum, (ii) the learning management system implemented has not been fully utilised with the data and information collected academically. Moreover, systematic literature review (SLR) is practised to investigate insights about collaborative learning, learning management system (LMS) and analytical approaches …

For individuals in the LGBTQ community, the thought of religion or religious groups usually elicit some reaction. There are many both mainstream and fringe groups that have strong, anti-LGBTQ viewpoints. This often is hard for someone who was raised religious and finds comfort in the church. The purpose of the current research was to conduct a structured literature review on academic literature exploring a connection between LGBTQ and cults. I used the PRISMA methodology to examine this topic. While there were some interesting findings, I was unable to find extensive connections between the topics, especially in regards to cults. The …

The Lone Star On Relief: The Story Of The Texas Federal Writers' Project, 1935-1943, Michael William Mitchell

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

My academic interest in the Federal Writers’ Project (FWP) began in 1993. I have been interested in the Works Progress Administration (WPA) from the time I was in my middle school years listening to stories from my grandmother. As a result, I grew up feeling that the WPA represented a part of a remarkable time and was a fascinating attempt by the far-away national government to help ordinary people in Texas struck down by the Great Depression. While conducting research on my master’s thesis, I met an archivist at the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina who …

Herschel V. Johnson: The States Rights Unionist, William Coleman Brown

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research explores the political career of Herschel Vespasian Johnson of Georgia. He was a Southern man who believed in the Jeffersonian tradition of limited government and states’ rights. He loved his country and was against his home state, Georgia, seceding from the Union because he believed secession would destroy the South. As a result, Johnson ruined his reputation, not because he opposed secession, but because he sacrificed himself by attaching his name to Stephen Douglas in 1860 in a desperate attempt to unite the nation. Even though Johnson fought to keep the Union together for most of his political …

A Geographical Lens On Rural Teacher Induction And Retention, Quinn A. Abbate

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Induction is a critical phase for early career teachers (ECTs) because it is where they develop their sense of professional identity and often decide whether or not to stay in the profession. Substantial research has reported high rates of rural teacher retention during induction (e.g., Ingersoll & Strong, 2011), but few researchers have examined this pattern through a geographical lens. Rural education theorists Gruenewald (2003) and Reid et al. (2010) suggest that a geographical lens is a useful way to understand the complexities of place and space—particularly rural space. Rooted in their theories, the present study aimed to address the …

“Roadblocks And Passageways”: Pandemic Lessons For Helping Graduate Students Survive And Thrive In Times Of Crisis, Eunsong Park, Corey S. Shdaimah, Nikita Aggarwal, Amy Garzón-Hampton

Journal of Graduate Education Research

Graduate students and universities continue to be challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study explored how U.S. graduate students (n=19) experienced and navigated pandemic challenges to their education using by Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, and field. Respondents’ abilities to manage changes caused by the pandemic were largely dependent on the capital they or their informal networks had and the field where they positioned during pre-pandemic and pandemic. Institutions’ characteristics and supports greatly influenced students’ habitus and sense of belonging. Study respondents’ ability to maintain their educational trajectories was tied to both their assessment of their institution as …
