Box Elder County Tourism Adventure Passport: Pilot Program Geospatial Analysis, Evaluation, And Next Steps., Janessa Knotts
Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones
The Box Elder County Tourism Office created the Tourism Adventure Passport Program and launched a pilot program in July 2025. GIS was used to engage and encourage visitors and locals to visit some or all sites listed and submit information, including GPS points, to participate in the program. To promote tourism in Box Elder County, the program highlights well known sites like the Golden Spike National Historic Park, along with other, less-known sites. The pilot program data was used to create a geospatial analysis and an analysis of the number of visits each site received and number of visitors were …

Association Between Food Insecurity And Nervous System Disorders In Caddo Parish, La: A Call To Action For Health, Megan Gremillion, Morgan Uebinger, Claire Crosby, Kaitlyn Tholen, Marie Vazquez Morgan, Ammar Husan
Journal of the Louisiana Public Health Association
Background: Food insecurity (FI)–the lack of access to affordable, nutritious food–affects millions of Americans. Caddo Parish, Louisiana, is of interest due to high FI prevalence and socioeconomic risk factors. While FI is known to exacerbate chronic health issues, its association with neurological health remains understudied, especially in high-risk communities. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult patients in Caddo Parish in 2022 using Epic Electronic Medical Record data to identify diagnoses of migraine, dementia, and stroke—the top neurological causes of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in the United States. FI status was determined using the Hunger Vital Sign screening questionnaire. …

Risk Factors For Unexpected Death In Patients Identified By A Communication And Resolution Program, Peter Lodato, Neal D. Goldstein, Alexandra M, Mapp, Adebayo Gbadebo, David A. Paul
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Many patients experience unexpected harm while receiving healthcare, with a lasting impact on patients, families, and caregivers. Communication and Resolution Programs are being adopted with increased frequency, as a more systematic, transparent, and equitable approach to these unexpected outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify whether demographic factors played a role in identifying patients with unexpected death, as managed in our CRP. This nested case-controlled compared 236 patients who experienced an unanticipated death with 2,360 controls who died expectedly over a 10-year period. Patients with unexpected death were more likely to be Black (AOR 2.18 95% CI 1.01-4.68), …
From Dante’S Inferno To California: Visualizing The Marginalized In Sandow Birk’S Social Critique, Lorenzo Williams
From Dante’S Inferno To California: Visualizing The Marginalized In Sandow Birk’S Social Critique, Lorenzo Williams
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
This research explores the intersection of medieval literature and contemporary visual art, focusing specifically on Sandow Birk’s reinterpretation of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. By examining Birk’s illustrated adaptations of Inferno and Purgatorio, this paper analyzes how he translates and visually reimagines Dante’s moral and spiritual journey as a modern critique of California’s social crises, particularly those affecting unhoused populations. It investigates Birk’s recontextualization of Dante’s allegory in relation to the urban decay of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Ultimately, this study aims to reveal how Birk’s visual narrative bridges historical understandings of religious and social issues with contemporary experiences of …
Doughnut Economics And Strong Sustainability: Rethinking The Role Of Financial Investment, Isabelle Pierotti
Doughnut Economics And Strong Sustainability: Rethinking The Role Of Financial Investment, Isabelle Pierotti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates how private investment could align doughnut economic framework. Doughnut economics is a strong sustainability economic framework where the economy operates within planetary boundaries while ensuring social equity. Theories of sustainable development, weak sustainability, and strong sustainability are discussed to provide theoretical context for doughnut economics and mainstream economics. The analysis concludes that conventional, profit maximizing private investment does not support a doughnut economics system by supporting the depletion of natural resources and exacerbating social issues. Sustainable mainstream investment also fails to support a doughnut framework. Lastly, while impact investment is theoretically committed to social and financial returns, …
Archaeological Predictive Meta-Modeling In Pre-Columbian Mexico, Peter Stamm
Archaeological Predictive Meta-Modeling In Pre-Columbian Mexico, Peter Stamm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Archaeological Predictive Modeling stands firmly as an important tool for Archaeologists to predict undiscovered sites from civilizations all across the globe. While powerful, this methodology is not without its own set of qualms. Striking a balance between pure a data-driven approach while also observing leading expert theories can be a complicated task. Going further, deciding on the specific domain of features to emphasize or overlook can be a challenge within itself, as one misstep can drastically change the output of model, sometimes for the worst. In addition, creating models that can expose their reasoning process can be rather difficult to …
Cultivating A Sense Of Community: International Students Navigating Community Engaged Learning Opportunities In Line With Their Social Goals, Katherine Lyon, Nicole Malette
Cultivating A Sense Of Community: International Students Navigating Community Engaged Learning Opportunities In Line With Their Social Goals, Katherine Lyon, Nicole Malette
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
International students often envision their time studying abroad with particular academic, professional, social, linguistic, and identity-related goals in mind (Fong, 2011; Jones, 2013; Montgomery & McDowell, 2009; Page, 2019; Page & Chahboun, 2019). Post-secondary institutions can provide resources and opportunities to help this heterogeneous group of students bring their vision into fruition. One such opportunity is community engaged learning (CEL), which has been shown to help students expand their social and academic abilities as they make contributions to an organization (Arnold, 2019; Greenberg, London & McKay, 2020; Mayer et al., 2019). Through in-depth interviews with 25 new international students who …
Assessing E-Health Utilization: An Integrated Analysis Of Social Determinants Of Health, Population, And Psychosocial Factors Using Data From The National Cancer Institute Hints Survey, Farah Faizah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The rapid integration of digital technologies into health systems has transformed the way individuals’ access, manage, and utilize health information. Yet, persistent inequities in e-health engagement highlight the role of social determinants of health (SDoH) in shaping access and utilization. This dissertation examines how demographic, socioeconomic, and geographic determinants influence three domains of e-health utilization—cancer information seeking, internet use, and wellness application/wearable device adoption—using nationally representative data from the 2022 cycle of the National Cancer Institute’s Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS). The study further investigates whether these determinants vary by cancer status and across racial/ethnic groups, providing a multidimensional …

Between Utterance And Action: The Shaping Of Social Accountability In India’S Coastal Commons, Nayana Udayashankar, Aarthi Sridhar
Journal of Law and Public Policy
Judicial orders, management plans, and zonation maps prepared in relation to environmental laws encode the jurisprudence on accountability. Laws such as India’s Coastal Regulation Zone Notification (CRZ Notification) 2019 serve as sources of discourse on use and access rights. Such laws are crucial in shaping developmental decisions and democratic practice along the coast. As an environmental law that contains detailed articulation on judicially mandated planning, mapping, and public access to regulatory information, the CRZ Notification 2019 offers a good case to understand the relation between legal discourse and citizens’ agency. Citizens of the state of Tamil Nadu representing its small-scale …
Examining Microbial Biomass And Soil Organic Carbon In Annual Vs. Perennial Agricultural Ecosystem Soils, Paige Kenyon, Jacob Rutz, Kelsey S. Bitting
Examining Microbial Biomass And Soil Organic Carbon In Annual Vs. Perennial Agricultural Ecosystem Soils, Paige Kenyon, Jacob Rutz, Kelsey S. Bitting
RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences
Soil systems have the ability to store large amounts of carbon for both short and long periods of time, much like other carbon pools such as oceans and forests. As increased amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere via anthropogenic means, including the agricultural industry, scientists have been researching how to increase the amount of carbon cycled from the atmosphere and into soils as a climate change mitigation strategy. Soil systems have the capacity to sequester carbon in part due to fungal and bacterial community activity. Differences in soil microbial biomass levels between annual and perennial agricultural systems …

Weather Shocks And Sectoral Labour Reallocation: Evidence From The European Regions, Federico Zilia, Paolo Nota, Alessandro Olper
Weather Shocks And Sectoral Labour Reallocation: Evidence From The European Regions, Federico Zilia, Paolo Nota, Alessandro Olper
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper examines how weather variability influences inter-sectoral labour reallocation and sectoral value-added (GVA) growth across 238 European regional units (NUTS2 level) from 1980 to 2022. Leveraging this large and granular dataset, we employ flexible functional forms within a fixed-effects panel framework, where the impact of weather shocks is conditional on long-term climate. Unlike previous empirical research in climate economics, which primarily focused on inter-annual variations in average temperature, this study emphasizes the significant role of daily temperature variability. Temperature variability is particularly critical in warmer regions with low seasonal variability, which are more vulnerable to sudden temperature shifts or …

Strategic Management And Profit Optimization In Major League Baseball: A Framework For Sustainable Franchise Success, Cole Bourne
Strategic Management And Profit Optimization In Major League Baseball: A Framework For Sustainable Franchise Success, Cole Bourne
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines the strategic, economic, and operational forces that drive profitability in Major League Baseball (MLB), positioning franchises not merely as sports teams but as complex, multi-revenue businesses. As the league evolves into a multi-billion-dollar industry shaped by expanding media rights, rising player salaries, and increasing market disparities, financial sustainability requires a blend of data-driven decision-making and modern business strategy. Through analysis of revenue streams, cost structures, market dynamics, and case studies, this work identifies the key levers that differentiate successful franchises from struggling ones.
The study outlines how media contracts—both national and local—serve as the backbone of MLB …

Enhancing Antitrafficking Initiatives Through An Interagency Collaboration Framework, Robert Louis Baxter
Enhancing Antitrafficking Initiatives Through An Interagency Collaboration Framework, Robert Louis Baxter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The challenges individual agencies face in addressing the complex issue of human trafficking and how interagency collaboration can strengthen survivor-centered support are largely unknown. Organizations often lack formal alliances that combine expertise and resources to deliver more comprehensive care. The absence of such partnerships represents a missed opportunity to provide the essential services necessary for survivors’ recovery, empowerment, and social reintegration. The purpose of the study was to use interagency collaboration to address the question: How can education, law enforcement, public health, and community-based organizations assess the barriers and benefits of interagency collaboration to create a more seamless support network …

Shifting Grounds Of Accountability: How Governmentality Reduces The Commoning Practices Of The Monpa Community In Arunachal Pradesh, Pijush Kumar Dutta
Journal of Law and Public Policy
Pastoralism is one of the traditional livelihoods of Monpa community that resides in western Arunachal Pradesh, India. They have been rearing yaks, an integral part of their culture and tradition, and managing summer and winter pasture lands as commons for grazing, However, the Monpa’s yak‑based livelihood is facing challenges as the number of villagers engaged in grazing related activities is reducing and the composition of livestock in the area is changing. To understand the reasons for these changes and its impact, an open‑ended questionnaire was used to interview herders, members of traditional village institutions and village panchayats, and elderly villagers …

Geographic Sorting Of Landslide Presidential Counties: The American South In Regional Context, John Morris, Binita Mahato, Joe Aistrup
Journal of Political Science
This paper examines the issue of partisan polarization in U.S. county-level presidential voting. Although the extant literature that addresses partisan sorting and/or polarization is extensive and growing, the literature is not without controversies. Our paper investigates the sequence and timing of shifts in partisan vote shares at the county level from 1932 through 2020, with a focused review of the dynamics of partisan shifts in southern states. While some scholars of southern politics conclude that the South generally follows national trends, other scholars suggest the opposite—that the nation follows the South. Our paper identifies trends in partisan competition in the …

Hydropower Dams, Deforestation, And Land Use Change: Evidence From Brazil, Chiara Falco, Valentina Raimondi
Hydropower Dams, Deforestation, And Land Use Change: Evidence From Brazil, Chiara Falco, Valentina Raimondi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In Brazil, hydropower generates more than 60% of the national electricity supply, placing the country among the most hydropower-dependent economies worldwide. This study analyses the causal impact of dam construction on forest loss in Brazil using a new municipality-level panel dataset covering 379 dams, combined with high-resolution satellite data on forest coverage, among other variables. Applying modern staggered difference-indifferences estimators and a dynamic event study, we find that dams reduce forest cover by almost 9% percent in the municipality. No anticipatory effects are detected, but postconstruction losses increase steadily over time. Mechanism show that forest loss occurs mainly through cropland …
Alaska Aviation Weather Infrastructure: Outage Patterns And Strategic Prioritization, Michael Jones, Greg Dyer
Alaska Aviation Weather Infrastructure: Outage Patterns And Strategic Prioritization, Michael Jones, Greg Dyer
ISER Reports
Alaska is the most aviation dependent state in the United States of America, with almost a quarter of the population and the majority of named communities lying off of the limited road system. The importance of reliable aviation transportation, and the infrastructure underlying these networks, is paramount for these communities. However, the vast distances, remoteness, and rugged environments that make aviation so critical also make maintaining aviation infrastructure particularly challenging. The goal of this report is to serve as a reference document for mapping outages in a subset of core aviation infrastructure – aviation weather stations. We have gathered what …
