The relocation of Indonesia's capital city is anticipated to promote inclusive economic growth while embracing cultural diversity. However, this transition may affect ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure patterns. The study investigated variations in UV exposure in the IKN region, focusing on urban development factors such as land use and population density that affect public health, sun protection, and skin cancer prevention. The research hypothesized that UV radiation is significantly correlated with these factors. UV Index data from 2010-2023, a hierarchical clustering method, identifies complex data patterns without determining the number of clusters. XGBoost, a machine learning model, was used for handling …

Road Safety Assessment For Accident And Non-Accident Cases Supporting Sustainable Development Goals 2030, Brian Nararya Nugraha, Sekar Warangi Nurcahyati, Hizkia Adhikaratma, Martha Leni Siregar
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Halving the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents is one target of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, which is still a challenging problem in Indonesia. However, the majority of research on this topic uses accident-based methods, which limits the safety analysis. Two road safety assessment methods are used to close the gap, with the addition of non-accident-based methods such as Road Safety Audits (RSA). The Margonda Raya Road, which is categorised as a traffic accident blackspot, was selected for the case study. For this, a field survey of the road segment is carried out. To minimise …

Predicting Tuberculosis Vulnerability Based On Environmental Factors Using Multi-Criteria Analysis In Bukittinggi, Eka Budi Satria, Indang Dewata, Iswandi Umar, Nurhasan Syah, Linda Handayuni, Evi Hasnita
Media Kesehatan Masyarakat Indonesia
Tuberculosis is still an infectious disease problem and the main cause of death in Indonesia, where there was an increase in cases from 301 per 100,000 population (2020) to 354,000 per 100,000 population (2021), with the death rate increasing by 55%. This research aims to determine the TB vulnerability cluster influenced by the main risk factors, namely TB prevalence, cure rate, immunization, population density, and population arrivals in Bukittinggi, using the Weight Product (WP) analysis method, and then describe them by mapping tuberculosis vulnerability. The findings indicate that four sub-districts exhibit the highest levels of tuberculosis vulnerability: Tarok Dipo (0.0379), …

Neoliberalism, Neofeudalism, And Precarity: A Response To Albena Azmanova And Jodi Dean, Panos Tsoukalis
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This is a response to the articles of Albena Azmanova and Jodi Dean included in this issue, exploring the intersections and divergences in their analyses of contemporary capitalism. I argue that the lens of neofeudalism that Jodi Dean invites us to entertain can offer a different explanation of Albena Azmanova’s diagnosis of contemporary capitalism. Notably, I propose that capitalism’s neofeudalising tendencies contribute to the rise of inequality, the decline of class politics, and the increase of monopoly power. Contrary to Jodi Dean though, I will claim that there were two crucial transformations of contemporary capitalism that spearheaded the emergence of …

How (Not) To Decolonize Marx/Ism, Terrell Carver, Gokboru S. Tanyildiz
How (Not) To Decolonize Marx/Ism, Terrell Carver, Gokboru S. Tanyildiz
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Since the late 1970s, postcolonial theorizing and decolonizing activisms have directed attention to a taken-for-granted Eurocentrism in Marx/ism. Since the early 2000s, the explosion in available texts, published in original languages and in English translation, has enabled these critiques to develop. Scholars of Marx and activists within Marxism have sometimes responded defensively with apologetics. In this article we analyze an exemplar of this dogmatic and moralizing genre, showing how it deploys three tropes that commonly structure intellectual biography and scholarly commentary. These three story-telling devices are: projection, passivity, and hermeticism. Shifting gear, and proceeding from an agent-oriented reading strategy, we …
Spiral Historiography. A Balanced Alternative To Teaching Jazz History, Josiah Boornazian
Spiral Historiography. A Balanced Alternative To Teaching Jazz History, Josiah Boornazian
The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research
Jazz history is often presented in collegiate textbooks and classrooms as a linear, teleological, and chronological progression from one style to another. Some scholars have recently reacted against this pattern and have instead focused heavily on viewing jazz history through the lens of one or a few narrow perspectives such as race, economics, politics, gender, or similar topics. This paper argues that both of these approaches, taken separately, are flawed, and that therefore a more effective methodology might be to integrate the two by utilizing the abstract concept of a spiral. A spiral is a shape that, in three spatial …

Coccolithophores comprise a major component of the oceanic carbon cycle. These unicellular algae produce ornate structures made of calcium carbonate, termed coccoliths, representing ~ 50% of calcite production in the open ocean. The exact molecular mechanisms which direct and control coccolith formation are unknown. In this study, we report on the presence and functional features of proteins within the coccoliths produced by a range of model coccolithophore species including: the globally abundant and well-studied Gephyrocapsa huxleyi (formerly Emiliania huxleyi) and related Gephyrocapsa oceanica, as well as the larger and more heavily calcified Coccolithus braarudii. Protein features were compared between species …

Refereed Research: A Sufficientarian Approach To Consumption Ethics In The Face Of Climate Change, Srinivas Venugopal, Ronika Chakrabarti
Subsistence Marketplaces
In this paper, we adopt a sufficientarian ethics approach to study the concern of consumption inadequacy engendered by climate change in subsistence communities. The sufficientarian approach to consumption ethics dictates that in the face of climate change, priority should be afforded to establishing and maintaining consumption adequacy in low-income settings. We elaborate on the basic principles underlying sufficientarian ethics and compare it to alternative approaches such as utilitarian ethics and prioritarian ethics. Subsequently, we turn our attention toward specifying how poverty and the deleterious impact of climate change combine to render subsistence communities more vulnerable to consumption inadequacies as compared …
Periodizing The Long Eighteenth Century — Across Generations, Katarina O'Briain
Periodizing The Long Eighteenth Century — Across Generations, Katarina O'Briain
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
This paper approaches the topic of intergenerational thinking by asking it what it might mean to stretch the conventional periodization of the long eighteenth century across generations. Reading Phillis Wheatley’s heroic couplet poems alongside Earl Wasserman’s mid-twentieth-century work on neoclassical poetics, it explores some of the surprising possibilities unleashed by revisiting the work of earlier critics. This mid-twentieth-century scholarship, the essay suggests, establishes a mode of eighteenth-century poetics that lends itself to more recent understandings of abolition and structural change. Earlier generations of critics trace an eighteenth-century poetic theory that resonates in the present moment; many generations before that, Phillis …

Photo-Feminists: The Inter-Textual Discussion Of Eighteenth-Century Periodical Frontispieces, Karenza Sutton-Bennett
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
The visual afterlife of the two frontispieces from the first volume of Eliza Haywood’s periodical, The Female Spectator (1744-46) promotes the argument that middling women should be allowed to learn the same proto-disciplinary topics that men studied by representing how women could include both amusements and informal learning in between their duties as wives and mothers. The Female Spectator’s frontispiece, the emblem to Frances Brooke’s The Old Maid (1755-56), the frontispiece to Charlotte Lennox’s The Lady’s Museum (1760-61) and the 1789 frontispiece to The Lady’s Magazine (1770-1847) have the common element of the image of Minerva to visually continue the …
The Sounds Of Madame Geoffrin’S Salon, Melanie Conroy
The Sounds Of Madame Geoffrin’S Salon, Melanie Conroy
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Salons were core institutions of the eighteenth-century European social calendar, especially in Paris. Literary performances and philosophical conversation were the core activities of many of these gatherings. What did conversation and literary readings actually sound like at these events? To what extent were voices audible to everyone in the room, or too muffled or far away to be heard? What was the impact of the ambiance or of ephemeral sound on the reading or reception of the hearing? Using textual descriptions, paintings, and architectural information, I reconstruct two legendary readings of eighteenth-century texts, Voltaire’s L’Orphélin de la Chine and Marmontel's …

How Ngos Operationalize The Ecological Capability Approach To Achieve Sustainability Goals, Patrick Elven P. Bañaco, Maria Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This study explores how NGOs achieve sustainability goals as they focus on poverty alleviation through ecological capability building. In-depth semi-structured interviews with nine representatives of NGOs working on poverty alleviation were conducted and subjected to thematic analysis within a critical realist perspective. Findings show that the NGOs engage their communities in all the different stages of their programs, creating a sense of empowerment that becomes the foundation for their ecological meta-capability, a holistic approach to the development of human capability that considers social, economic, and environmental aspects. This is better understood by analyzing the interplay of Structure, Agency, and Culture …

Hauntings Of Publication Deaths, Possibilities For Our Academic Present, Kathleen (Kaye) A. Hare, Amber Moore
Hauntings Of Publication Deaths, Possibilities For Our Academic Present, Kathleen (Kaye) A. Hare, Amber Moore
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
In this paper, we use a feminist dialogue to query publication deaths that haunt us. We ruminate on respective past publications that remain unread and uncited, despite encapsulating defining events in our development as scholars. For Author Kaye Hare this was an affective narrative that troubled a seemingly ideal moment of public scholarship; for Author Amber Moore, this was a hard-fought analysis of precarious intersectional feminist resistance in popular culture. Inspired by the horror-film genre “spectral incognizance,” we methodologically deploy a multivocal dialogical structure based on multiple revisitings that attenuate anxieties of metaphorical publication death, before revealing that this death …

Using Gis To Visualize Daily Routines At The Neighborhood And Household Scales: A Feminist Approach Using A Nineteenth-Century Diary, Sterling D. Quinn
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
Feminist scholars in the discipline of geography have noted the ways that routine activities at the household and neighborhood scales contribute to power relations and identity formation. Geographic information systems (GIS), with their ability to create multiple visual representations of people’s experiences in space at any scale, hold great potential for revealing these local processes and patterns that are often lost or invisible in broader historical narratives, especially when they pertain to women and children. This article contributes an example by using GIS to encode and map everyday events in a diary kept by Elisabeth Koren, a nineteenth-century Norwegian immigrant …

Swimming Against The Tide: Resistance Strategies And Agentic Skills Used By Childfree Women, Carolina Rojas-Madrigal
Journal of Feminist Scholarship
In pronatalist societies, the decision to remain childfree creates a conflict-laden scenario. This article explores how childfree women confront social hostility and defend their reproductive autonomy through resistance strategies and tactics. With this aim, the results of a feminist research, positioned from feminist Standpoint theory and digital ethnography, are presented. The researcher conducted biographical-narrative interviews with sixteen voluntary childless women from Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Spain, and the United Kingdom, all of whom were members of a childfree Facebook group. This research revealed that there is a persistent tension between societal pressure placed on these women in pronatalist …

AI/AN communities are disproportionately impacted by food insecurity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Decreasing the risk of GDM can interrupt the intergenerational cycle of diabetes in AI/AN families, and can decrease diabetes-related health disparities. The goal of this study was to explore ways of supporting holistic health and reducing the risk of GDM among young American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) females prior to pregnancy. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with adult AI/AN women (>18 years) who had GDM or who have young female relatives (e.g., daughters) (n = 41), AI/AN females between 12 and 24 years (n = 18), …

Pediatric lead poisoning remains a persistent public health problem. Children in the US spend the preponderance of their time at home; thus, housing is an important social determinant of health. Improving health outcomes derived from housing-based sources involves differentiating the risks posed by the existing housing stock. In this paper, we developed a parcel-level lead risk index (LRI) based on external housing conditions and the year of home construction. The purpose of this study was to introduce a housing-based lead risk index (LRI), developed using retrospective data, to estimate parcel-by-parcel variation in housing-based lead risk. We described how the LRI …
A Network Analysis Of Social Determinants Of Health And Youth Suicidal Ideation And Suicide Attempts At The Neighborhood-Level In Houston, Tx, Tyler Hendley
LSU Master's Theses
Youth suicide is a complex, multi-faceted human phenomenon that has no singular cause but instead is theorized to be a result of an interplay of psychological, biological, and social risk and protective factors. To best identify youth suicide risk and possible avenues for intervention, a social-ecological model approach may prove beneficial. As community-level risk factors (i.e., social determinants of health (SDOH)) have shown to impact health outcomes, it is important to understand the association between community-level risk and youth suicide-related behaviors. Utilizing a network analytic approach, this study developed an estimated partial correlation network to understand the relationship between youth …
