A four-class solution was the best-fitting model for males: class 1 (1.42%) was characterized as the polysubstance user (all …

No. 02: Leveraging Food Remittances For Enhanced Food Security In Urban Africa, Jonathan Crush Sep 2024

No. 02: Leveraging Food Remittances For Enhanced Food Security In Urban Africa, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

This policy brief highlights the critical yet underexplored role of food remittances in enhancing food security across Africa. While global attention has predominantly focused on cash remittances and their economic impacts, food remittances – defined as the transfer of foodstuffs by migrants to their home regions – play a vital role in ensuring the availability, accessibility, and stability of food supplies for both rural and urban households. These remittances help bridge the food security gap between urban and rural areas, with food produced in rural regions supporting the nutritional needs of family members in cities. The reciprocal flow of resources, …

METHODS: Survey and clinical data were collected from patients with cancer (n = 1258) enrolled in the Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative. Logistic regression models examined whether receipt of genome-matched treatment differed by patient education, income, and rurality. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression were conducted to evaluate 12-month mortality. We completed additional exploratory analyses using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox models stratified by receipt of genome-matched treatment. Logistic …

Using U–Pb Carbonate Dating To Constrain The Timing Of Extension And Fault Reactivation Within The Bristol Channel Basin, Sw England, Joe Connolly, Mark Anderson, Catherine Mottram, Gregory D. Price, Randall Parrish, David Sanderson Sep 2024

Using U–Pb Carbonate Dating To Constrain The Timing Of Extension And Fault Reactivation Within The Bristol Channel Basin, Sw England, Joe Connolly, Mark Anderson, Catherine Mottram, Gregory D. Price, Randall Parrish, David Sanderson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The Bristol Channel Basin is a Mesozoic continental rift basin. The basin is an important analogue for offshore reservoirs. Relative cross-cutting relationships and correlation with adjacent sedimentary basins have previously been used to constrain the timing of basin development. In situ U–Pb carbonate geochronology has been used to date calcite slickenfibre development in the cores of normal, thrust and strike-slip faults in the East Quantoxhead and Kilve region of Somerset for the first time. Protracted north–south extension from c. 150 to 120 Ma formed normal faults. Subsequent north–south shortening from c. 50 to 20 Ma was accommodated by (1) mutually …

Structural And Geomorphological Constraints On The Activity Of The Sparta Fault (Greece), Çal Çağatay, Sarah Boulton, Zoe Mildon Sep 2024

Structural And Geomorphological Constraints On The Activity Of The Sparta Fault (Greece), Çal Çağatay, Sarah Boulton, Zoe Mildon

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The ancient city of Sparti (Greece) suffered extensive damage from an estimated Mw 7.2 earthquake in 464 BCE, resulting in c. 20 000 fatalities, but questions remain about the short-(c. 104 years) and long-term (105–106 years) activity of this important structure. This paper presents new structural data and fluvial geomorphological analysis from the Sparta Fault and, in particular, considers the less well-known northern fault segment. A new topographic profile on the well-developed post-glacial fault scarp from the northern strand indicates a 7.53 m offset over the last c. 15 ka, suggesting a throw-rate of c. …

On Measuring Muslim Segregation In Urban India, Arpit Shah, Anish Sugathan, Naveen Bharathi, Andaleeb Rahman, Amit Garg, Deepak Malghan Sep 2024

On Measuring Muslim Segregation In Urban India, Arpit Shah, Anish Sugathan, Naveen Bharathi, Andaleeb Rahman, Amit Garg, Deepak Malghan

Working Papers

The spatial segregation of Muslims in urban India is central to their social, economic, and political marginalization. However, the quantitative characterization of Muslim segregation has suffered from the lack of readily available demographic data at high spatial and temporal resolutions. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of accurately quantifying Muslim segregation in urban India using the latest electoral rolls data from Bengaluru (a megapolis of over 13 million residents) and an improved open-source algorithm to identify Muslim names. Our approach provides significant improvements over past efforts in this regard. We introduce two new metrics (diversity and local divergence) to account for …

No. 01: Mitigating The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Migrants And Food Security In The Global South, Sujata Ramachandran, Jonathan Crush

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing vulnerabilities among migrants, particularly those involved in South-South migration, leading to heightened risks of poverty, food insecurity, and marginalization. The pandemic disrupted global migration patterns, hindered access to essential services, and severely impacted the livelihoods of millions of migrants. Governments in the Global South faced the dual challenge of mitigating these impacts while fostering inclusive recovery strategies. This policy brief provides recommendations for governments to address the immediate and long-term challenges posed by the pandemic on migration and food security, as well as planning for future pandemics. Key areas include enhancing social protection, ensuring healthcare …

Is Acts Really “The Most Overtly Missionary Book”?, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

The aim of this article is twofold: first, to challenge the white reading of the book of Acts, and second, to offer an alternative reading by placing the story of the marginalized people, the colonized people, at the center. The first part of this article interrogates how white pentecostal scholars read the book of Acts as a missionary book and identify themselves with the disciples in the book of Acts. After presenting the problems with this reading, I propose an alternative interpretation of the movement in Acts as a migration movement instead of a missionary movement. Reading it from a …

Uyghur Forced Labor: New U.S. And E.U. Laws Banning Uyghur Imports And The New Diplomacy Of "Going After The Money", Ronald C. Brown Sep 2024

Uyghur Forced Labor: New U.S. And E.U. Laws Banning Uyghur Imports And The New Diplomacy Of "Going After The Money", Ronald C. Brown

Journal of International Business and Law

China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (“XUAR”) is infamous for the Chinese Government’s exploitation of their ethnic minority Uyghur population. Over China’s denials, the United Nations and numerous Western studies reveal widespread attempts at eradication of the Uyghur’s ethnic origins and the imprisonment, forced labor and trafficking of their people to work for China’s profits in the world markets. International treaties, International Labour Organization (“ILO”) Conventions, and some foreign laws have attempted to push China into adherence with international labor and human rights standards against forced labor and trafficking. The U.S. State Department evaluates 188 countries and assigns each to categories …

Climate change is increasingly affecting the world's ocean ecosystems, necessitating urgent guidance on adaptation strategies to limit or prevent catastrophic impacts. The Fisheries and Marine Ecosystem Model Intercomparison Project (FishMIP) is a network and framework that provides standardised ensemble projections of the impacts of climate change and fisheries on ocean life and the benefits that it provides to people. Since its official launch in 2013 as a small, self-organized project within the larger Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project, the FishMIP community has grown substantially and contributed to key international policy processes, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment …

A Midwest Perspective On Biochar Integration In Extension, Blake C. Colclasure, Elizabeth Bose, Jack Dempsey, Taylor K. Ruth Sep 2024

A Midwest Perspective On Biochar Integration In Extension, Blake C. Colclasure, Elizabeth Bose, Jack Dempsey, Taylor K. Ruth

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Biochar can be considered a climate-smart, agricultural soil amendment due to its ability to provide long-term storage of carbon. Research examining the impacts of biochar-enriched soils reported improved soil characteristics often leading to agricultural benefits, especially in nutrient-poor soils. Despite the potential use of biochar in the Midwest, United States, few studies have examined biochar in Extension. This study, guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action, used survey methodology to collect information on Midwest Extension agents’ (n = 125) knowledge, attitudes, and subjective normative beliefs toward biochar. These factors, along with agents’ demographics and perceptions toward sustainable soil amendments, were …

Cognosis And The Evolution Of Civilization, Ken Baskin Sep 2024

Cognosis And The Evolution Of Civilization, Ken Baskin

Comparative Civilizations Review

From the time when the complex states such as Egypt or Sumer emerged roughly 5,000 years ago, the civilizations they represent have generally become more populous, more socially varied, wealthier, and more technologically advanced. As a result, the innovations they produced would begin to change the conditions in which they existed, and their cultures have had to evolve to adapt to this ongoing change. For instance, the cultures of Bronze Age Egypt and the Iron Age Han Dynasty had to be quite different, even though both were agricultural societies. And, of course, the Electronic Age cultures of the United States …
