Reconstructing Canopy Disturbance History And Recruitment Patterns To Inform Management Decisions At The Lost 40 In The Chippewa National Forest, Northern Minnesota, Julia Rauchfuss, Susy Svatek Ziegler
The Geographical Bulletin
Old-growth eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) and red pine (Pinus resinosa) dominate the forest canopy but not the understory of the Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area in northern Minnesota . Our objectives were to (1) analyze stand structure and species composition, (2) examine the tree-ring record to determine the frequency and magnitude of canopy disturbances, (3) characterize recruitment patterns to provide information for a science-based management plan, and (4) compare the canopy-disturbance history of the Lost 40 to the average decadal rate of disturbance in similar forests . Average canopy disturbance from 1880–1999 was 2 .6–8 .2 percent per …

A Spectrum Of Violence: The Intersection Of Antemortem And Postmortem Embodiment In Migrant Death Investigation At The U.S.-Mexico Border, Molly A. Kaplan, Caroline Znachko
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The objective of the present literature review is to examine how the humanitarian crisis of migrant death at the U.S.-Mexico border epitomizes the antemortem and postmortem dimensions of structural violence and the lasting effects it can have on the human body. After describing the ongoing migrant death crisis, we review embodiment constructs in biological anthropology pertaining to structural violence and marginalization across the life course. We then survey studies examining skeletal and dental biomarkers of structural violence as embodied in migrant populations, including oral pathology, dental modifications, porotic hyperostosis, cribra orbitalia, enamel hypoplasia, cranial fluctuating asymmetry, vertebral neural canal size, …

Environmental Sensitivity Index (Esi) Feasibility Study Of All-Hazards Indices Expansion, Research Planning, Inc
Coastal Response Research Center
Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) products are developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support planning for and responding to coastal oil and chemical spills. ESI data describe a variety of coastal resources that are at risk from oil spills that include sensitive shorelines (e.g., marshes, tidal flats), biological resources (e.g., birds, shellfish beds), and human-use resources (e.g., public beaches, water intakes). ESI maps and datasets include shoreline types that are ranked according to their sensitivity to oil and chemical spills. This index was the original focus of ESI maps and has been a standard for industry and …

No. 04: Canadian Support For Women In The Informal Food Sector In The Global South, Heba Hamzeh, Laeba Khan, Adwoa Konadu-Yiadom
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the vulnerabilities faced by women in the informal food sector in the Global South, deepening existing gender inequalities and economic inequities. Women informal food vendors play a critical role in ensuring food security in urban areas, yet their contributions are often undervalued and unsupported by formal policy frameworks. This policy brief presents two case studies from Mexico City and Maputo, Mozambique, highlighting the challenges women face in this sector, including lack of legal security, financial instability, and limited access to social protection. In response to these challenges, there is a pressing need for targeted interventions …
The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash
The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash
Dissertations and Theses
Food injustice is a form of violence perpetrated by state and corporate actors against a constituency under their governing power, particularly impacting marginalized and impoverished communities. It denies individuals access to nutritious food, perpetuating cycles of poverty, inequality, physical health risks, and social exclusion. Grassroots movements have emerged to challenge dominant paradigms and advocate for food sovereignty, agroecology, and food anarchy. In Portland, the movement represents a nontraditional approach to food security that closely resembles the reactionary ideology of urban "punk" culture. Both groups prioritize community autonomy over food systems, sustainable agricultural practices, and resistance to oppressive structures that perpetuate …

Guidance Document On The Use Of Opinion Polls And Vignettes To Measure Public Opinion, Attitudes And Behavioural Intentions Related To Female Genital Mutilation, Dennis Matanda, Francis Obare, Chi-Chi Undie
Sexual and Reproductive Health, Rights, and Choices
This guidance document is part of the FGM Data Hub’s effort to address challenges encountered by programme implementers in measuring change (specifically, unstandardised measurement indicators and complex surveys) and the effect of social desirability in the context of female genital mutilation (FGM). The guidance focuses on how to use a tool developed by the FGM Data Hub to measure social attitudes toward FGM. The process leading to the development of this guidance involved piloting the tool—a simple opinion poll survey using a combination of direct (self-report) and indirect (vignettes about others) questioning methodologies to generate robust data to measure public …

Digital Heritage Preservation Collection
This collection explores the life of Gladys Mitchell and the home she shared with her family on Detroit's Eastside. Gladys and her husband, Ossian Sweet, lived with her parents Benjamin and Rosella in a residence on 9322-24 Cairney Street from 1922 to 1925 before moving to the now-historic bungalow at 2905 Garland Street, located about a mile southeast. In 1925, when the Sweets moved into an all-white neighborhood, their experience led to a landmark Supreme Court case that affirmed African Americans' rights to homeownership, including the right to defend their private property.
Benjamin Mitchell and his wife, Rosella, rented the …
Post-Wildfire Water Quality Dynamics: A Multiscale Examination And Predictive Modeling Of Stream Temperature And Turbidity In Western U.S. Watersheds, Junjie Chen
Dissertations and Theses
Wildfires, exacerbated by climate change and human activities, pose significant threats to water-related ecosystem services in forested watersheds. This dissertation investigates the multifaceted impacts of wildfires on stream temperature and turbidity, two critical water quality parameters essential for maintaining aquatic ecosystem health and human water uses. By integrating a comprehensive literature review, empirical data analysis, and advanced machine learning techniques, this research provides a nuanced understanding of how wildfires affect hydrological processes across various temporal and spatial scales.
The findings reveal significant regional variability and the complex interplay between climatic, geographic, and anthropogenic factors. For instance, the literature review highlights …

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
The purpose of this study was to explore student performance, self-ratings of learning and preference, and student comments on a variety of reading quiz formats in a first semester speech-language pathology graduate course. Students from two cohorts (n = 34) completed four types of quizzes: closed-book, open-book, open-note, and collaborative group in addition to a note review study option in self-selected order. Scores and reported preference were significantly lower on closed-book quizzes compared to other formats, but few other significant differences were observed across formats. Ranges of preferences, low variability in scores, and student comments supported the practice of …

The Journal of Social Encounters
As Sudan is grappling with a conflict that is taking its toll on the economy and is displacing millions of individuals, pathways to a sustainable reconstruction of the country are needed for the stability of a future peace. Tourism in Sudan has been confined to small initiatives during all its history, despite the invaluable heritage that its territory holds. This article aims at investigating the potential of tourism as an engine for the sustainable development of the country and the improvement of the livelihoods of local communities, as it has been for other nations in recent history. The main goal …

No. 03: Addressing Urban Food Security Challenges For South-South Migrants, Abel Chikanda, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
This policy brief examines the growing phenomenon of South-South migration, with a focus on the challenges of urban food security faced by migrants moving from one Global South country to urban areas in another. South-South migration has become increasingly significant, yet it remains under-researched, especially regarding the food insecurity that many migrants face in their host cities. The brief highlights the unique vulnerabilities of these migrants, who often find themselves in precarious employment, facing xenophobia, and excluded from formal social protection mechanisms, all of which exacerbate their food insecurity. The case study of Cape Town, South Africa, underscores the severity …

Prostate-Specific Antigen Testing Patterns And Prostate Cancer Stage At Diagnosis In Older Ohio Cancer Patients, Sajan N. Patel, Long Vu, Holly E. Hartman, Weichuan Dong, Siran M. Koroukian, Johnie Rose
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) screening recommendations do not support prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for older men. Such screening often occurs, however. It is, therefore, important to understand how frequently and among which subgroups screening occurs, and the extent of distant stage PCa diagnoses among screened older men. Methods: Using the 2014–2016 linked Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) and Medicare administrative database, we identified men 68 and older diagnosed with PCa and categorized their PSA testing in the three years preceding diagnosis as screening or diagnostic. We conducted multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify correlates of screening PSA and to …
