Reading Phillis Wheatley’S Catastrophist Poetics: Heroic Couplets And Environmental Justice, Katarina O'Briain

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay offers suggestions for reading Phillis Wheatley as an early poet of environmental justice by tracing the figure of catastrophe that runs throughout her works. The essay recounts teaching Phillis’s early poems in an upper-level undergraduate seminar on “Ecocriticism: Environmental Justice Literature” as well as in a graduate seminar called “Global Georgics: Land and Labour Across the Long Eighteenth Century.” Looking closely at moments where she describes “pestilential vapors,” or when “Heav’n quakes, earth trembles, and the shores resound,” I argue that Wheatley’s carefully ordered heroic couplet poems speak calamity more than regularity, catastrophe more than gradualism. This pedagogical …

Illinois Clean Energy Policy And Procurement, Katherine Ambrose Jun 2024

Illinois Clean Energy Policy And Procurement, Katherine Ambrose

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This presentation describes my applied research experience with the Illinois Power Agency (IPA) in our vision to enhance the state’s clean energy portfolio by equitable and cost-effective means. Over the Spring 2024 semester, I produced reports on program expansions and aided administrative operations of the Planning and Procurement Bureau, particularly providing research support on energy storage distribution grid impacts for the 2024 IPA Policy Study and researching alignment between federal and state definitions of environmental justice communities. Throughout this experience, I gained insight into state policy frameworks and stakeholder collaboration to advance a clean energy transition.

Exploring The Relationship Between Microplastics And Neurotoxicity, John Stathopoulos Jun 2024

Exploring The Relationship Between Microplastics And Neurotoxicity, John Stathopoulos

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This presentation will look at the relationship between microplastics and neurotoxicity, focusing on the limits of our current knowledge. Despite being an especially relevant topic of conversation in the realms of environmental and public health, little is known about the effects that microplastics have on the brain. As a neuroscience student with interests in medicine, neurodegeneration, and public health, I found the lack of research shocking. Throughout this semester, I looked at primary research and news articles to explore the extent of our knowledge and limits of current microplastic research, as well as their potential neurotoxic effects and future steps.

Development Of Environmental Education Materials For Columbus Park, Abbey Y. Haynes Jun 2024

Development Of Environmental Education Materials For Columbus Park, Abbey Y. Haynes

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The lack of environmental education and access to nature is a significant deficit that impacts everyone, particularly youth. This project aims to respond to the correlation between access to environmental education and environmental justice. Folks from marginalized communities tend to have less access to nature education. A survey given to youth after the Forest Preserve Experience in summer 2023, hosted by Friends of the Forest Preserves, was analyzed. The survey included questions about different aspects of program effectiveness. This qualitative data drew connections between socioeconomic disparities and access to nature and environmental education. To address this issue, I have compiled …

An Assessment Of Equity, Compounding Disasters, And Climate Change In Hazard Mitigation Planning For The Portland Metro Region, Chris Lower Jun 2024

An Assessment Of Equity, Compounding Disasters, And Climate Change In Hazard Mitigation Planning For The Portland Metro Region, Chris Lower

Geography Masters Research Papers

Hazard mitigation plans (HMPs) are strategic documents or policies developed by governments, communities, and organizations to identify risks and reduce the impacts of natural and human- made hazards. These plans aim to minimize loss of life, property damage, and disruption from floods, wildfires, snowstorms, heatwaves, and other disasters. While useful, these plans infrequently and unevenly address the lived experiences of marginalized populations who bear the disproportionate impacts of recurrent disasters. Technocratic planning goals exacerbate these impacts by failing to center inclusive and equity-focused approaches, thus eroding the resilience capacities of many vulnerable groups including the poor and communities of color. …

Nautilus: Deep Sea Dexterity, Quinn Bates, Saunder Salazar, Morgan Watts, Davis Robertson, Sarah Abruzzo, Ian Staff, Nick Aguilar

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Global warming and climate change are prevalent issues in today's society. As a result, research in the ocean, earth's biggest ecosystem, is imperative in efforts to protect the environment. Santa Clara University's Robotic Systems Lab contributes to this field through work and development on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Nautilus was built to support geologists and other researchers, primarily in the Lake Tahoe and Monterey Bay area. Thus far the ROV s sole scientific instrument has been its onboard camera, though partner geologists desire the ability to collect physical samples using a robotic arm attachment at depths up to 100 meters. …

Caste Inequality In Occupational Exposure To Heat Waves In India, Arpit Shah, Sneha Thapliyal, Anish Sugathan, Vimal Mishra, Deepak Malghan Jun 2024

Caste Inequality In Occupational Exposure To Heat Waves In India, Arpit Shah, Sneha Thapliyal, Anish Sugathan, Vimal Mishra, Deepak Malghan

Working Papers

India is a leading global hotspot for extreme heat waves induced by climate change. The social demography of India is centered on its caste hierarchy rooted in endogamous occu pational groups. We investigate the association between caste and climate inequality bystudying occupational exposure during the 2019 and 2022 heat waves. We combine high spatio-temporal resolution heat stress information from satellite imagery with a large na tionally and regionally representative labor force survey with rich socio-economic and demo graphic information (n > 100,000 individuals). The slope of the heat stress dose – workhours curve corresponding to the marginalized caste groups is between …

Small Island Risks: Research Reflections For Disaster Anthropologists And Climate Ethnographers, Crystal A. Felima

UK CARES Faculty Publications

Disasters and climate-related events, including tropical storms, droughts, coastal erosion, and ocean acidification, threaten small island nations. Given the urgency of reducing disaster risks and the effects of climate change on vulnerable populations, this reflection essay pursues three objectives. First, it highlights the role of anthropology, ethnography, and multi-sited research in exploring disaster impacts, climate crises, and public policy in island communities. It then highlights national planning and inter-regional activities to build awareness of various risk reduction efforts by island nations and multi-governmental organizations. This article concludes with discussion prompts to engage researchers, scholars, students, and practitioners studying and working …

Moving Beyond Human Capital: Constructivism, Critical Pedagogy, And Interdisciplinary Collaboration In A Building And Construction Pathway, Ryan James Lundell Jun 2024

Moving Beyond Human Capital: Constructivism, Critical Pedagogy, And Interdisciplinary Collaboration In A Building And Construction Pathway, Ryan James Lundell

Social Justice in Educational Leadership EdD Dissertations

The silo structure and neoliberal rationality of Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways limit student learning and propagate the purpose of education as the creation of human capital, not a socially aware citizenry (Brown, 2017; Jacobs, 2010). Despite its history of racial tracking, CTE pathways still neglect critical thinking/dialogue around social/environmental justice issues, drastically hurting workers’ ability to confront these inequities (Darder, 2017; Oakes & Saunders, 2011; Shor & Freire, 1987). Using a qualitative research design that employs ethnographic elements, this study found that constructivism, critical pedagogy, and interdisciplinary collaboration can positively impact the experience, participation, and critical consciousness of students …

At The Intersection Of Environmental Justice And Sustainability Lies A More Equitable, Healthy Future For U.S. Communities, Alexandra Dapolito Dunn

UMKC Law Review

This Article offers a brief and recent history of the environmental justice and sustainability movements, with a decidedly U.S. focused approach necessary due to the breadth of the subject matter. This Article then offers examples of how the movements are coming together, in U.S. federal and state law and policy, judicial decisions, and in community applications. This Article then shows how the alignment of environmental justice and sustainability is serving to advance equity and a healthier future for many U.S. communities. This Article concludes that the continued intersection of these movements will serve to benefit our nation and its residents …

Still Not At All: Environmental Sustainability In The Supreme Court, James R. May

UMKC Law Review

Some predicted that the Court and litigants would make sustainability principles juridically relevant. Yet this article takes a fresh look and finds express invocation of sustainability still lacking not only in the U.S. Supreme Court but virtually throughout the U.S. federal judicial system comprised of the Supreme Court, 13 federal appellate courts, and 94 federal district courts. Part II tells the story of sustainable development's continued march as a legal principle. Part III engages sustainability jurisprudence before the U.S. Supreme Court and otherwise in the federal court system. It concludes that not only the U.S. Supreme Court but the entire …

Protecting Water, Sustaining Communities: Transforming Groundwater Management Entities Into Sources Of Power During And After Environmental Crises, Sarah Matsumoto Jun 2024

Protecting Water, Sustaining Communities: Transforming Groundwater Management Entities Into Sources Of Power During And After Environmental Crises, Sarah Matsumoto

UMKC Law Review

Groundwater serves as a vital, limited resource for people all over the world. The United States Geological Survey reports that about 140 million people in the United States rely on groundwater for drinking water, of those, almost 43 million people rely on groundwater from domestic (or private, non-public supply) wells. In rural areas, groundwater is often the only available source of drinking water, making protection of groundwater quality in these regions a paramount concern.

Mirroring the various state regulatory approaches to groundwater management and protection, much of the recent media coverage of groundwater in the West focuses on water allocation …

Manywheres: In Pursuit Of Social Justice In Developmental Science, Gabriel M. Velez, Séamus A. Power Jun 2024

Manywheres: In Pursuit Of Social Justice In Developmental Science, Gabriel M. Velez, Séamus A. Power

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

In this article, we articulate an innovative framework, manywheres, and argue that it can advance the work of fostering youth-led change and progressive world-making. We first root psychological and development science in an applied framework of developing more just, harmonious, and tolerant social worlds. Then, we introduce manywheres, a guiding framework of propositions of attending to the complexity and nuance of meaning-making across individuals without becoming lost in nihilism, relativism, or ethnocentric views of social justice. This leads to the construction of a more holistic developmental lens considering the age-related, contextual, and internal factors that shape meaning-making individual …
