How The Nature Of Inequality Reduction Matters For Co2 Emissions, Tobias Angel, Alexandre Berthe, Valeria Costantini, Mariagrazia D’Angeli
How The Nature Of Inequality Reduction Matters For Co2 Emissions, Tobias Angel, Alexandre Berthe, Valeria Costantini, Mariagrazia D’Angeli
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This study investigates the relationship between distinct types of inequality and CO2 emissions using panel data on 156 countries from 1995 to 2020. Using fixed effects panel and quantile regression techniques, we report estimates that indicate that pre-distribution (inequality reduction by structural changes and social protection) is better aligned with the goal of carbon emission reduction than redistribution (inequality reduction by transfers). However, those countries who contribute the least to global warming face the highest environmental degrading effect of pre-distribution. In contrast, pre-distribution decreases or does not affect the carbon emissions of the biggest global polluters. Redistribution, on the other hand, …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Decarbonization plans depend on the rapid, large-scale deployment of batteries to sufficiently decarbonize the electricity system and on-road transport. This can take many forms, shaped by technology, materials, and supply chain selection, which will have local and global environmental and social impacts. Current knowledge gaps limit the ability of decision-makers to make choices in facilitating battery deployment that minimizes or avoids unintended environmental and social consequences. These gaps include a lack of harmonized, accessible, and up-to-date data on manufacturing and supply chains and shortcomings within sustainability and social impact assessment methods, resulting in uncertainty that limits incorporation of research into …
Environmental Justice Gap In Italy: The Role Of Industrial Agglomerations And Regional Pollution Dispersion Capacity, Alessandra Drigo
Environmental Justice Gap In Italy: The Role Of Industrial Agglomerations And Regional Pollution Dispersion Capacity, Alessandra Drigo
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This study is the first to examine the relationship between PM2.5 concentration and per capita income at the municipality level for Italy. The novelty of this work is also to explore the role of agglomerations and morphological factors in influencing the income-pollution correlation in the year 2013, and to assess its persistence to 2019. While there is not an unconditional environmental justice gap in Italy, controlling for land morphology and agglomerations variables weakens the positive correlation between PM2.5 and per capita income to the point of disappearance. Notably, being located in the Padana Valley ecoregion serves as a key indicator …

Impacts Of Stream Habitat Restoration On Macroinvertebrate Assemblages: A Systematic Literature Review, Morgan E. Seitzer
Impacts Of Stream Habitat Restoration On Macroinvertebrate Assemblages: A Systematic Literature Review, Morgan E. Seitzer
University Honors Theses
Globally, river restoration has become a popular tool for improving the health of a watershed and restoring ecosystem services, but still has significant knowledge gaps. In certain areas and scientific communities, special attention has been given to the response of macroinvertebrates as a measure of restoration success. This systematic literature review aims to highlight and discuss the patterns in studies that have comparable before-and-after restoration data on macroinvertebrates after reconnecting stream channels to their floodplains. Macroinvertebrate sampling is a simple if not time-consuming task that can reveal important data about habitat quality. Because they serve as an important food source …

Elizabeth Street Garden, Inc. V. City Of New York
All Decisions
In a SEQRA challenge regarding proposed senior housing development on city-owned land in Manhattan, the court affirmed HPD's negative declaration. The case hinged on whether HPD adequately considered environmental impacts under SEQRA. The court held HPD's assessment met legal standards by identifying relevant environmental concerns and taking a reasoned approach, including mitigating open space deficiencies. The decision reinforced that judicial review of agency actions under SEQRA is limited to procedural adherence and rationality, emphasizing agencies' discretion in environmental assessments. The ruling clarified that SEQRA does not require agencies to address every potential environmental impact comprehensively.

Embodied Urban Political Ecology Of Oil: Social Reproduction In Oil Geographies Case Study: Ahwaz, Khuzestan, Iran, Maryam Amiri
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the transformative impact of the oil industry on social reproduction within the urban and ecological landscapes of Khuzestan Province, Iran, and its center, the city of Ahwaz. Specifically, the study sought to understand the effects of the oil industry on social reproduction in three key areas: gender relations, race/ethnic relations, and daily life amidst environmental pollution caused by the oil industry.
This is explored through three sub-questions: 1) How are hierarchical socio-spatial relationships perpetuated through practices of everyday life? 2) How are gender relationships redefined and reproduced in the oil city? 3) How are ethnic relationships redefined …
Empowering Family Forestland Owners To Reduce Wildfire Risk, Tom Lininger
Empowering Family Forestland Owners To Reduce Wildfire Risk, Tom Lininger
Georgia Law Review
Wildfire risk is growing in the forested portion of the Wildland-Urban Interface, especially in the Western United States. Some commentators have suggested that the time has come for measures that would reduce the human presence in this area. In certain circumstances, however, family forestland owners have a salutary effect on forest resiliency. The attempt to exclude family forestland owners would create more problems than it would solve. A better strategy would be to assist family forestland owners in fireproofing their residences and improving the health of their forests.

There is a dearth of comprehensive literature relevant to the relationship between settler colonialism and health outcomes of Indigenous peoples residing in the United States (U.S.). Critical analysis of settler colonial determinants of Indigenous health will help to further shape discourse, research priorities, and policy relevant to Indigenous population health and disease distribution. This thesis will bring awareness to settler colonialism, propose relationships between settler colonialism and health outcomes, and identify specific settler colonial determinants of Indigenous health to help guide development and use of nursing theory. This dissertation argues that the structure of settler colonialism threatens and implicates the …
Climate Risk, Insurance Retreat, And State Response, Mark Nevitt, Michael Pappas
Climate Risk, Insurance Retreat, And State Response, Mark Nevitt, Michael Pappas
Georgia Law Review
Climate change is fundamentally destabilizing the private insurance industry, with many high-profile insurance companies exiting states in the face of catastrophic, climateinduced risk. This rapid “insurance retreat” represents a major market signal in response to climate-exacerbated risks. Private businesses are making actuarial decisions, assessing that some locations are just too vulnerable to insure. At the same time, this insurance retreat also poses a policy challenge for states as they react to the mounting insurance gaps left by exiting private insurers. This Article analyzes insurance retreat, its attendant policy challenges, and the lessons that can be drawn from state responses. It …

Repurposing Fossil Infrastructure, Heather E. Payne
Repurposing Fossil Infrastructure, Heather E. Payne
San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law
Our built environment includes infrastructure dedicated to fossil fuels: wells, pipelines, compressor stations, refineries, fossil gas storage caverns, gas stations. One challenge as we decarbonize is how we will repurpose these locations and networks as we move toward a decarbonized world.
This Article imagines the outcomes for three distinct pieces of our fossil fuel infrastructure and how each could be a part of our decarbonized future. First, given the challenges seen building long distance transmission, local sources of renewable electricity will become even more critical. In many places, the most plentiful of these is rooftop solar, but it faces a …

Remote Sensing-Based Analysis Of Urban Heat Islands And Historical Housing Discrimination In Boston, Ma, Lily Gray
Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses
Since 2020, annual average temperatures for Boston, Massachusetts, have ranked within the top 10 hottest years, with 2021 becoming Boston’s hottest year on record (Northeast Regional Climate Center, 2023). Heat is more extreme in urban areas because of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, a temperature difference between urban and suburban areas. This effect is visible between neighborhoods within urban areas, as more densely built regions are often multiple °C hotter than greener areas (Marando et al., 2021). Neighborhoods affected by discriminatory housing policies are often correlated with higher temperatures, which can disproportionately expose certain groups to heat-related hazards. This …
The Dartmouth Land Ethic: Synthesizing Environmental Ethical Beliefs In Hanover And Beyond, Conor M. Roemer
The Dartmouth Land Ethic: Synthesizing Environmental Ethical Beliefs In Hanover And Beyond, Conor M. Roemer
Environmental Studies Senior Theses
In this thesis, I seek to explore the nature of an environmental ethical paradigm at Dartmouth. In order to do so, I have chosen to begin with an examination of Aldo Leopold’s Land Ethic. This watershed essay has inspired many environmental ethical inquiries in the last eighty years. Leopold’s Land Ethic urged human beings to view the environment beyond what might be extracted for anthropogenic use and to see the land as a summation of everything that lies within it: not just the plants and animals, but the mountains, rocks, rivers, and soil as well. In turn, scores of philosophers …
Carbon Pricing In Action: Evaluating The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, Evelyn M. Hatem
Carbon Pricing In Action: Evaluating The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, Evelyn M. Hatem
Environmental Studies Senior Theses
The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is one of the longest-standing emissions trading schemes for carbon dioxide in the United States. “Cap-and-trade” describes an emissions trading scheme where emissions are capped at a specific level, allowances are allocated beneath that cap, and emitters can trade allowances. In RGGI, the cap lowers over time, and the allowances are distributed via a quarterly auction. While RGGI includes 10 member states across the Northeast United States, there is risk of carbon leakage whereby the carbon price signal in RGGI states reduces carbon emissions in those states, but there is increased generation in neighboring …

College Athletes, Social Justice, And The Role Of Social Workers In Advocating For Change, Lauren Mccoy, Evie Oregon, Dana J. Sullivan
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Social justice activism from college athletes is considered a rare occurrence often due to the intensity of negative public response and the possibility of athletic repercussions. The likelihood of negative reactions did not stop the unique, highly publicized protests at Grambling State University and the University of Missouri. These protests set the tone for college athlete unionization and a new era of college athlete activism. College athletes recognize their power as corporate brands and standing as a group made it so their voices had to be heard or else face financial consequences. While these protests achieved their initial goals, their …

Untouchable Sovereign Debts: Towards A New Model Of Transitional Justice And Global Finance, Cosmas Emeziem
Untouchable Sovereign Debts: Towards A New Model Of Transitional Justice And Global Finance, Cosmas Emeziem
Georgia Journal of International & Comparative Law
Who bears the cost of peace in societies transitioning from oppressive regimes? Who is responsible for paying back the debts incurred by dictators? These questions are crucial in transitional justice situations, yet the discipline discusses debts and transitional justice separately. While sovereign debts are viewed within markets and global economic frameworks, transitional justice is considered within citizens and human rights frameworks. This approach is flawed as it marginalizes human dignity and social justice considerations.
To rectify this schism, this Article brings these two legal spheres together in an epistemic dialogue using sovereign debt as the point of intersection. In transitional …
