In the digital age, the rise of Islamophobia-marked by an irrational fear or discrimination against Islam and Muslims-has emerged as a pressing issue, especially on social media platforms. In this paper we employs a multi-class classification system, moving beyond traditional binary models. We categorize Islamophobic content into three main classes and various subclasses, covering a range from subtle biases to explicit incitement. Comparative analysis of data from Reddit and Twitter illuminates the distinct prevalence and types of Islamophobic content specific to each platform. This paper deepens our understanding of digital Islamophobia and provides insights for crafting targeted online counter strategies. …

In this paper, we implement a comprehensive three-class system to categorize social media discussions about Islam and Muslims, enhancing the typical binary approach. These classes are: I) General Discourse About Islam and Muslims, II) Criticism of Islamic Teachings and Figures, and III) Comments Against Muslims. These categories are designed to balance the nuances of free speech while protecting diverse groups like Muslims, ex-Muslims, LGBTQ+ communities, and atheists. By utilizing machine learning and employing transformer-based models, we analyze the distribution and characteristics of these classes in social media content. Our findings reveal distinct patterns of user engagement with topics related to …

‘Routines’ And ‘Formulaic Language’ In Conversation Analysis (Author's Extended Data), Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Though the field of conversation analysis (CA) was founded upon examinations of interactional “routines” such as conversation openings and closings, conceptualizing and categorizing communicative phenomena as “formulaic” is anathema to CA. This chapter details how, since its inception, CA work has empirically elucidated how participants to recorded episodes of naturally occurring social interaction actively and collaboratively accomplish conversational activities as ‘routine’ or not by selecting from available action alternatives, spontaneously coordinating their selections vis-à-vis one another. Taking a multimodal CA approach, this chapter reviews state-of-the art literature on how people open and close in-person and telephone conversations, showing the immense …

The Affordable Housing Crisis In New York City, Mexican Studies Institute Cuny, Hashim Abdul
Publications and Research
This paper examines the current housing crisis in The Bronx that worsened during and after the COVID pandemic. It examines social and economic factors that contribute to low home ownership and housing instability. Through a comparison with European models, the author concludes that solutions to alleviate the crisis may include rental price caps, increased Airbnb regulations and government “subsidization instead of profitability”.

Biodistribution Comparison Of Fentanyl And Morphine Following Acute And Repeated Expsoure, Rosamond M. Goodson
Theses and Dissertations
The ongoing opioid crisis constitutes a dire public health threat that has resulted in staggering loss of life. In 2021, opioids were implicated in over 75% of the approximately 107,000 deaths attributed to drug overdose (CDC), and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and its analogues are key drivers of the surge in opioid fatalities in recent years. Although fentanyl is a μ opioid receptor agonist, it has several distinct attributes compared to other drugs in this category, such as morphine. These include enhanced lipophilicity, heightened potency to induce respiratory depression, more rapid entry into the central nervous system, reduced sensitivity …

Research has shown that automation, carpooling, and electrification combined in a mobility on demand framework have the potential for theoretically large emissions reductions. However, less research has been done regarding consumer preferences and behavioral responses to this vision of transportation of the future. In this paper we use choice experiment data collected from an online ride-hailing survey to quantify consumer preferences for these technologies. Our results suggest there are major barriers to consumers’ willing to ride in such vehicles. We find that respondents require large discounts to ride in driverless vehicles or to carpool with other passengers, even holding ride …

Objective: Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently demonstrate deficits in working memory and in multiple domains of math skills, including underdeveloped problem-solving and computation skills. The Baddeley model of working memory posits a multicomponent system, including a domain-general central executive and two domain-specific subsystems—phonological short-term memory and visuospatial short-term memory. Extant literature indicates a strong link between neurocognitive deficits in working/short-term memory and math skills; however, the extent to which each component of working/short-term memory may account for this relation is unclear. Method: The present study was the first to use bifactor (S·I-1) modeling to examine relations between each working/short-term …

Hospital Surge Capacity In Co-Occurring Mass Casualty Incidents, Carolyn Solimine
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought sweeping disruption and changes across healthcare systems. Examining how these changes have impacted surge capacity and capabilities is necessary to plan for future co-occurring surge-creating events in hospital Emergency Departments (EDs) and Intensive Care Units (ICUs). While there is extensive research on patient surge management, no study has looked at how the presence of a prolonged surge would impact the healthcare system’s ability to handle a concurrent acute patient surge. This study seeks to demonstrate the need for comprehensive planning for co-occurring patient surges in New York State using hospital capacity data from Health and …

Accumulation of arsenic (As) in rice grain was reported in many regions of the world, including the United States, which has been a threat to human health. This field research investigated the grain as accumulation and its relationship with the uptake of selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), and cadmium (Cd) in soils with and without monosodium methane arsonate (MSMA) amended, as effects of selected rice cultivars and water management. Results indicated that MSMA increased the accumulation of as and Se but decreased Mo for all six cultivars under four irrigation management. MSMA also increased grain-Cd in some cultivars. in no MSMA-amended …

What’S Faith Got To Do With It? Young Earth Creationism And The Promise Of Certainty, William Vance Trollinger, Susan L. Trollinger
Intersections of Science and Faith
Contrary to what one might imagine, the proponents of Biblical creationism do not appeal to religious faith. Instead, they proclaim Genesis 1 as a historically and scientifically true description of creation by the only "eyewitness" (God), a description that they say is clearly substantiated by genuine, empirical science (as opposed to what they claim is the false, biased science of evolutionists). That is to say, young Earth creationists possess the certainty of truth.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires participating states to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to children with disabilities. The IDEA gives parents of children with disabilities significant rights and major responsibilities in developing and maintaining their child’s education. Getting the most out of the IDEA for their children requires parents to commit substantial time and financial resources that are difficult to provide in the best circumstances. When parents are having marital difficulties, separated, undergoing a divorce, or negotiating child custody, these difficulties can be exacerbated as parents navigate the intersection of the federal IDEA and state …

Integrating Christian Beliefs And Scientific Psychology: Honoring John Carter, Rodger K. Bufford
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
John Carter had a profound role in shaping the thinking of generations of students and scholars in our understanding of the relationship of Christian beliefs and modern psychol- ogy. That Carter and Narramore’s (1979) volume remains in print and in use after more than four decades is a testimony to that influence. Here, I briefly explore the ways of knowing in general and elaborate on scientific knowing as a unique and powerful approach to appre- hending what our senses and instruments reveal. Scientific knowing is premised on several essential assumptions, employs a time-tested array of strategies to systematically gath- er …

Use of figurative language, such as metaphors and idioms, is common in our daily-life communications, and it can also be found in Software Engineering (SE) channels, such as comments on GitHub. Automatically interpreting figurative language is a challenging task, even with modern Large Language Models (LLMs), as it often involves subtle nuances. This is particularly true in the SE domain, where figurative language is frequently used to convey technical concepts, often bearing developer affect (e.g., 'spaghetti code). Surprisingly, there is a lack of studies on how figurative language in SE communications impacts the performance of automatic tools that focus on …
Landmark-Based Localization Using Stereo Vision And Deep Learning In Gps-Denied Battlefield Environment, Ganesh Sapkota, Sanjay Madria
Landmark-Based Localization Using Stereo Vision And Deep Learning In Gps-Denied Battlefield Environment, Ganesh Sapkota, Sanjay Madria
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Localization in a battlefield environment is increasingly challenging as GPS connectivity is often denied or unreliable, and physical deployment of anchor nodes across wireless networks for localization can be difficult in hostile battlefield terrain. This paper proposes a novel framework for the localization of moving objects in non-GPS battlefield environments using stereo vision and a deep learning model by recognizing naturally existing or artificial landmarks as anchors. The proposed method utilizes a custom-calibrated stereo vision camera for distance estimation and the YOLOv8s model, which is trained and fine-tuned with our real-world dataset for landmark anchor recognition. The depth images are …

Achieving Efficient And Privacy-Preserving Reverse Skyline Query Over Single Cloud, Yubo Peng, Xiong Li, Ke Gu, Jinjun Chen, Sajal K. Das, Xiaosong Zhang
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Reverse skyline query (RSQ) has been widely used in practice since it can pick out the data of interest to the query vector. To save storage resources and facilitate service provision, data owners usually outsource data to the cloud for RSQ services, which poses huge challenges to data security and privacy protection. Existing privacy-preserving RSQ schemes are either based on a two-cloud model or cannot fully protect privacy. To this end, we propose an efficient privacy-preserving reverse skyline query scheme over a single cloud (ePRSQ). Specifically, we first design a privacy-preserving inner product's sign determination scheme (PIPSD), which can determine …

Introduction: Sleep and stress processes shape executive function. Evidence suggests that poor sleep regulation can lead to significant impairments in executive functions. Psychological stress can also directly impact a variety of executive functions, often leading to declines, but may additionally reduce executive function via its negative impact on sleep. Rates of perceived stress and poor sleep have skyrocketed in recent years. As such, it has become increasingly important to understand how daily stress exposures and sleep processes modulate executive functions. Methods: In a remote 21-day app-based study, 227 participants completed sleep and stress assessments three times a day. They also …

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) presents a new way of using an old resource: the subterranean rock structures and their interstitial “pore” space that make up the subsurface of the earth. Injecting carbon into these structures also raises a number of new legal questions about their ownership and the relations between the owners of the structures and the owners of other subsurface resources contained within them, like oil and gas, coal, coalbed methane, and geologically native carbon dioxide. This Article explores these new legal questions and the conceptual difficulties they present with the aim of guiding participants in CCUS …

Ilanoli isht unowa. We tell our own stories. A single historical event has many stories. Although this nation's official chronicle expected and even hoped for Indigenous peoples to fade away, we are still here. Our histories are marked by resistance, survival, sovereignty, and renaissance. Only now, in the later stages of the American experiment, do our histories have the chance to matter in new forms and spaces. How much these stories matter within contemporary contexts depends upon where they are spoken and more importantly, who is listening. On the pages of a U.S. Supreme Court opinion, what stories are told …

This article presents the first psychometric validation of the Culturally Responsive Assessment of Indigenous Schooling (CRAIS) tool, alongside a call for methodological complexity when engaged in research with and in Indigenous contexts. We examined the 23 culturally responsive schooling (CRS) principles underlying the newly created CRAIS tool in independent samples of curriculum units produced by teachers. Of these, 22 principles loaded into two factors. We further investigated the rationale for all 23 items through a review of the literature and robust discussions about the lived experiences of the authors and the Indigenous teachers with whom we work. We suggest that …

The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Abstract
In the era of Climate Change, many are concerned that the end of the Anthropocene, or the end of the era of human life on Earth, is upon us. Western European colonialism and its subsequent systems (settler-colonialism, colonial-capitalism, and globalization - sometimes termed “neocolonialism”) have all been implicated in contributing to unsustainable behaviors linked to accelerating climate change. In searching for possible solutions, some have called for listening to Indigenous Peoples, citing ethics of sustainability found among many Indigenous cultures. However, the cultural products of settler-colonialism are still dominant in ways that do not allow for Indigenous worldviews to …

I Am Not A Hero: Heroic Action Divorces The Hero From The Political Community, Ari Kohen, Brian Riches, Andre Sólo

Most people who perform a heroic act will, afterward, deny that their actions were heroic and claim that anyone would have done the same, even though that is demonstrably false (and, often, others were present who failed to act heroically at all). The literature on the psychology of heroism has never investigated why this is. This theoretical paper proposes an answer and seeks to provoke exploration of a previously unexplored topic. We note that people who undertake heroic action face a unique conflict: they embody their community’s highest values, while simultaneously breaking norms to stand apart from that community. We …
