Research Review: "Reculturation: A New Perspective On Military-Civilian Transition Stress", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Research Review: "Reculturation: A New Perspective On Military-Civilian Transition Stress", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This IVMF research review identifies challenges in veterans' transition to civilian life, despite available support. It highlights mental health issues like suicidality and low life satisfaction, possibly linked to cultural identity conflicts. Veterans' attempts to address this may lead to feelings of isolation, impacting mental health. The authors recommend studying immigrant acculturation experiences to understand veterans' identity struggles, proposing "reculturation" as a term. They advocate for clinical psychology to prioritize understanding this process to improve program engagement and suicide prevention. This review also looks at implications for policy, practice, and future research.

Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This IVMF research brief delves into the challenges veterans confront when moving from military to civilian life, where stark cultural disparities exist. These veterans often grapple with fulfilling fundamental psychological needs such as structure and belonging, compounded by civilian reliance on stereotypes. The brief integrates diverse disciplines like social psychology and military psychology, using theories like compensatory control to dissect the psychological obstacles faced by veterans. Recent research within this framework sheds light on these issues, offering valuable insights for clinicians and managers to develop tailored interventions. Emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches, this research brief highlights the significance of understanding and supporting …
Thermodynamic Analysis Of Metal Segregation In Dual Phase High Entropy Ceramics, Steven M. Smith, William G. Fahrenholtz, Gregory E. Hilmas, Stefano Curtarolo
Thermodynamic Analysis Of Metal Segregation In Dual Phase High Entropy Ceramics, Steven M. Smith, William G. Fahrenholtz, Gregory E. Hilmas, Stefano Curtarolo
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Equilibrium Gibbs' free energy calculations were used to determine metal segregation trends between boride and carbide solid solutions containing two metals that are relevant to dual phase high entropy ceramics. The model predicted that Ti had the strongest tendency to segregate to the boride phase followed by Zr, Nb, Mo, V, Hf, and Ta, which matches experimental results of measured compositions. The ratio of a metal in the carbide phase to the content of the same metal in the corresponding metal boride had a linear trend with the change in standard Gibbs' free energy of reaction for a metal carbide …

Super-Hard (Hf,Mo,Ti,V,W)B2 Was Synthesized by Boro-Carbothermal Reduction and Densified by Spark Plasma Sintering. This Composition Was Produced for the First Time as a Single-Phase Ceramic in the Present Research. the Optimized Ceramic Had a Single Hexagonal AlB2-Type Crystalline Phase with a Grain Size of 3.8 µm and Homogeneous Distribution of the Constituent Metals. the Vickers Hardness Exhibited the Indentation Size Effect, Increasing from 27 GPa at a Load of 9.8 N to as High as 66 GPa at a Load of 0.49 N. This is the Highest Hardness Reported to Date for High Entropy Boride Ceramics.
Oxidation Of Additively Manufactured Zrb2–Sic In Air And In Co2 At 700–1000 °C, Marharyta Lakusta, Nicholas M. Timme, Abid H. Rafi, Jeremy Lee Watts, M. (Ming) C. (Chuan) Leu, Gregory E. Hilmas, William G. Fahrenholtz, David W. Lipke

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Oxidation behavior of additively manufactured zrb2–sic in air and in co2 is reported in the temperature range of 700–1000 °c. Observed scale morphologies in air and in co2 were similar, featuring an outer borosilicate layer and an inner porous zirconia layer containing partially oxidized silicon carbide particles and remnant borosilicate products. Oxide scale thicknesses and parabolic scaling constants in air were approximately twice those observed in co2 across all studied temperatures. Activation energies for oxidation of 140 ± 20 kj/mol in air and 110 ± 20 kj/mol in co2 were determined, indicating similar diffusion processes that appear to be rate-limiting. …

Conscientious Objection And Abortion: The Italian Pseudo-Exceptionalism, C. Crea
Conscientious Objection And Abortion: The Italian Pseudo-Exceptionalism, C. Crea
FIU Law Review
Threats to abortion and reproductive rights are well-rooted in global discursive and strategic practices promoted by conservative and ‘pro-life’ movements and narratives. Starting from these premises, this essay will focus on abortion access in Italy and the barrier caused by conscientious objection among medical personnel, which appears indefensible in light of both international human rights regimes and philosophical-theoretical perspectives. The main questions explored here are the following: Is conscientious objection to abortion really based on Catholic moral teaching, which constitutes the conventional religious wisdom of the national societal fabric? How and to what extent are Catholic and conservative moral narratives …
Italian Comparative: A Trait Of The Legal System, Bianca Gardella Tedeschi
Italian Comparative: A Trait Of The Legal System, Bianca Gardella Tedeschi
FIU Law Review
The cultural environment of Italian academia was open to suggestions that came from other legal systems and shaped an eclectic legal culture. Italy is an hybrid system that took the code from France, the legal science from Germany, and has always been receptive of foreign suggestions. This cultural background may explain why the Italian legal curriculum requires a mandatory course of comparative law and why comparative law has been an important field of Italian legal research. At the same time, comparative law was characterized by an an important mark of antiformalism, necessary to swim through the times of Fascism and …
Urban Commons In Italy, Michele Graziadei
Urban Commons In Italy, Michele Graziadei
FIU Law Review
The Italian experience with urban commons has been very rich indeed. In the last ten years or so the number of social and legal initiatives relating to urban commons in Italy has exploded. The present Italian situation shows that urban commons are here to stay. By now, they are part of the collective imagination, of political and socio-economic transformative projects, of administrative practices, and of the law. The demand for the commons in the city originates from the social movements that intend to resist the penetration of the market and of private property in every ambit of life but is …
The Spree Of Principles And The Abuses Of The Balancing Doctrine In Brazil, Ronaldo Porto Macedo
The Spree Of Principles And The Abuses Of The Balancing Doctrine In Brazil, Ronaldo Porto Macedo
FIU Law Review
This article delves into the nuanced distinction between principles and rules in legal discourse, emphasizing their differing grammatical functions. While acknowledging the necessity of principles in legal reasoning, it cautions against their unchecked proliferation, exemplified by the Ellwanger case. The analysis underscores the importance of contextual understanding in discerning between principles and policies, advocating for a philosophical-political reflective approach. It critiques the overreliance on balancing-proportionality as a universal method, warning against its potential for dogmatic reduction and infringement on fundamental rights like freedom of expression. Ultimately, it calls for a balanced, reflective interpretation of principles to mitigate the risks inherent …
Filling The Gap: The Case For Driver's Licenses As A Lifeline To Opportunity For Undocumented Immigrants Where The Federal Government Fails To Act On Comprehensive Immigration Reform, David Peraza
FIU Law Review
The federal government has repeatedly failed at passing comprehensive immigration reform, which would provide basic benefits to the undocumented population in the U.S, including driver’s licenses. Various states have made attempts to provide undocumented immigrants with driver’s licenses. This work address the benefits and drawbacks of these policies and ultimately posits that holdout states should enact policies to provide driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants in the face of the federal government’s inaction.
