Looking Back To Old New York City In Herman Melville’S “Bartleby”, Shawn Thomson Dec 2024

Looking Back To Old New York City In Herman Melville’S “Bartleby”, Shawn Thomson

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

Though “Bartleby, the Scrivener” takes place in the three-block area in and around the lawyer’s Wall Street offices, the uptown attitudes toward city life of the suburbs inform the lawyer’s relationships to his urban or downtown space. Wall Street stands as a central feature of the island city’s history, taking its name from a physical wall built to protect the Dutch from the British and the Indians. As a result, Wall Street served to differentiate the suburban from the urban confines of the city. Through the position of the lawyer in the Master Chancery office on Wall Street and his …

Choosing Heritage: A Comparative Analysis Of Choice Of Law Approaches In Nazi-Looted Art Cases, Elizabeth Bueche Dec 2024

Choosing Heritage: A Comparative Analysis Of Choice Of Law Approaches In Nazi-Looted Art Cases, Elizabeth Bueche

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The Nazis looted hundreds of thousands of pieces of art across Europe before and during World War II. Many of the victims and heirs of parties wrongfully dispossessed are still searching for their stolen art or, in some cases, are fighting in order to get it back. As seen in Cassirer v. Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection Foundation, choice of law—or determining the applicable substantive law that governs the dispute—can have enormous impacts on stolen art cases. This essay examines the pitfalls of using several choice of law approaches, such as comparative impairment, or more territorial-based approaches in stolen art cases. This essay …

The Unworthy And The Ungrateful: On The Mirroring Legal Patterns Of France, Québec, And Romania, Mircea Dan Bob-Bocșan, Anthony Matthew Dima Murphy Dec 2024

The Unworthy And The Ungrateful: On The Mirroring Legal Patterns Of France, Québec, And Romania, Mircea Dan Bob-Bocșan, Anthony Matthew Dima Murphy

Journal of Civil Law Studies

After initially borrowing the unworthiness-ingratitude pairing of the Napoleonic Code, the legal systems of Québec and Romania opted to expand the former by using the application range of the latter as an example, specifically in the field of legacies. Nonetheless, the two systems diverged greatly in readjusting the scope of the ingratitude doctrine: while the Québécois lawmaker chose to abolish the doctrine of ingratitude entirely, its Romanian counterpart opted to maintain it, giving rise to the possibility of overlapping rules. Consequently, the aims of our paper are twofold: on one hand, it seeks to determine the full extent of this …

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Tool To Ensure Environmental Protection, Natalie Blanc Dec 2024

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Tool To Ensure Environmental Protection, Natalie Blanc

Journal of Civil Law Studies

How does French tort law deal with environmental issues? Can it effectively do so, and how? Corporate social responsibility is one of tools developed by law in order to ensure environmental protection. Since its inception in the 70s, corporate social responsibility has undergone a transformation. From being purely voluntary, it has become mandatory. Several recent texts, including two European directives of 2022 and 2024, have imposed numerous obligations on companies in order to force them to develop a responsible and virtuous strategy, in other words, to anticipate and prevent the negative effects of their activities, particularly on the environment. This …

A Conflict Of Classifications: The Curious Case Of The Transfer On Death Form In Louisiana Law, Brendan Cuti Dec 2024

A Conflict Of Classifications: The Curious Case Of The Transfer On Death Form In Louisiana Law, Brendan Cuti

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Louisiana courts have recently struggled with whether to recognize transfer-on-death forms for securities accounts as valid. Because these forms do not comply with Louisiana’s law of will formalities, they are incapable of transferring ownership of a decedent’s securities account under Louisiana law. However, some Louisiana courts have held that a decedent can circumvent Louisiana’s rule against nonprobate transfers by including a choice-of-law clause selecting another’s state law to govern the form. Still, other Louisiana courts have held that Louisiana’s rule against nonprobate transfers is a rule of public policy that cannot be avoided with a choice-of-law clause. This paper argues …

The Civil Law And The Inner Self: Roman Iniuria And The Transformation Of The Private Sphere, Talya Deibel Dec 2024

The Civil Law And The Inner Self: Roman Iniuria And The Transformation Of The Private Sphere, Talya Deibel

Journal of Civil Law Studies

This paper focuses on the transhistorical nature of the protection of personality interests in the civilian tradition. It takes Roman iniuria as a key concept to analyze the legal protection of the “inner selves” of human beings. The legal framework of iniuria stands out as an illustration of how social and moral phenomena which belonged to the interior realm such as honor, dignity, emotions, and reputation carried legal value in Roman law. Starting from its origins in Roman antiquity, this paper views the inner self through the legal prism of personality protection and comments on how formative periods in history …

Nipping Crime In The Bud: The Spatial Relationship Between Crime And Meeting People’S Needs, Alicia Cerquone Dec 2024

Nipping Crime In The Bud: The Spatial Relationship Between Crime And Meeting People’S Needs, Alicia Cerquone

LSU Master's Theses

The recent high-profile killings of people by the police brought attention to police violence, and prompted activists to call for an end to police violence. Drawing from an understanding of strain theory (Merton, 1938; Farnworth & Leiber, 1989; Agnew, 1992; Agnew, 2001; Agnew, 2008) and Tucker and Cadora’s (2003) ideas of justice reinvestment, this research was designed with the belief that police funding can be better used to help people meet their basic needs of housing, healthcare, and education. This research is concerned with the spatial relationship between crime and the quality of social infrastructure, or the programs in place …

Los Retos And Opportunities Del Transnational Translanguaging In English-Language Teaching Programs In Mexico, David Martinez-Prieto, Sue Kasun, Peter Sayer

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

En otras palabras, en este ensayo promovemos el uso de translanguaging as a reaction towards the reproduction of systemic oppression which occurs in many English Language Teaching programs in Mexican universities regarding nativism, raciolinguistics, and irreflective neoliberalism.

Symptoms Of Academic Burnout In Associate Degree Nursing Students, Laura J. Witherspoon Dec 2024

Symptoms Of Academic Burnout In Associate Degree Nursing Students, Laura J. Witherspoon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Academic burnout may contribute to high attrition in associate degree nursing (ADN) students because academic burnout affects academic success, causes physical and mental health problems, and decreases self-esteem. Academic burnout may be more prevalent in ADN students because ADN programs are shorter but more intense. The purpose of this study, guided by Maslach’s multidimensional theory of burnout, was to examine the relationship between time in the ADN program and symptoms of academic burnout in nursing student participants and the difference in academic burnout among the four semesters in the ADN students. Maslach’s Burnout Inventory-General survey for students was emailed to …

Contributions Of Glacier Meltwater To Water Resources And Water Quality Below The Ablating Coropuna Ice Cap In The Arid Peruvian Andes, Alexis Rowley Dec 2024

Contributions Of Glacier Meltwater To Water Resources And Water Quality Below The Ablating Coropuna Ice Cap In The Arid Peruvian Andes, Alexis Rowley

Theses and Dissertations

Rapidly retreating glaciers in the arid tropics are an invaluable resource for communities that depend on meltwater to support drinking water, agriculture, hydropower production, and mining. There is limited understanding of how glacier loss will impact regional water resources, groundwater flow paths, and water quality, especially during the dry season. The Nevado Coropuna volcano in Southern Peru has one of the largest remaining ice caps in the tropics, but has experienced rapid ice loss in the past few decades and is projected to disappear in the next century due to climate change. Located in the northern Atacama Desert, the arid …

Using Two-Dimensional Terahertz Spectroscopy To Explore Vibrations, Magnetism, And Their Coupling, Megan Faux Biggs Dec 2024

Using Two-Dimensional Terahertz Spectroscopy To Explore Vibrations, Magnetism, And Their Coupling, Megan Faux Biggs

Theses and Dissertations

Terahertz (THz) light is at the resonant frequency of important fundamental excitations within crystalline materials such as carrier dynamics, phonons, and spin-wave excitations called magnons. THz light can be produced at high field strengths using optical rectification in nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals. N-benzyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (BNA) is one such crystal commonly used to produce THz when pumping with 800 nm light. Here, we improve upon the design of the molecular building blocks of BNA by replacing a hydrogen atom with a fluorine atom, leading to improved THz generation and a higher crystal damage threshold. Later, we focus on using THz light to …

Optimal Beamforming Design For Stability And Performance Of Uav Formations, Wanyue Lin, Andrew Clark Dec 2024

Optimal Beamforming Design For Stability And Performance Of Uav Formations, Wanyue Lin, Andrew Clark

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

This paper explores the application of multi-loop Wireless Networked Control Systems (WNCS) for managing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) formations. A multi-antenna base station (BS) employs beamforming (BF) technology to communicate with and control multiple UAVs simultaneously. Given the inherent uncertainty and stochastic nature of wireless channels and control system dynamics, we propose a joint communication-control strategy to ensure an accurate, stable, and efficient system. Our objective is to minimize the weighted sum of state error and communication costs while maintaining system stability and adhering to transmission power constraints by adapting BF weight vectors. The benefits of the BF design are …

Transfer Processes For 2d And 3d Nanomembrane Materials For Flexible Device Fabrication, Noah Zheng Dec 2024

Transfer Processes For 2d And 3d Nanomembrane Materials For Flexible Device Fabrication, Noah Zheng

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Electronic devices made from heterostructures of 2D layers, 3D nanomembranes, and metallic contacts can realize performance benefits over traditional Silicon-based devices while also exhibiting physical properties such as flexibility and transparency. These novel materials have the potential to unlock new electronic form factors, greatly increasing the applicability of electronic devices. Flexible, biocompatible devices are particularly sought after to facilitate in-vivo health sensing. The diversity of 2D and 3D nanomembrane materials, however, necessitates that many different processes be developed for their production. Often, novel materials must be grown on special wafers to avoid lattice mismatch and ensure crystallinity, then transferred to …

Stigma In Special Education Services With Student Focused Solutions, Deion Heinen Dec 2024

Stigma In Special Education Services With Student Focused Solutions, Deion Heinen

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

Stigma can impact groups in many different ways. Special education students have endured stigma and the effects of this stigma for decades as proven by years of research. However, student focused solutions have been lacking in the literature and this is critical to give our educators tools to use in order to promote a positive learning environment in their classroom. While in this study, stigma was not proven in students that I currently teach that have IEPs or receive intervention services it was indicated that students rate themselves lower than general education students about how they perceive school. While more …

Fans In Ancient Egypt: Iconographic And Contextual Study Of Fans In The Predynastic, Old, And Middle Kingdoms, Nadra Zaki

Theses and Dissertations

A variety of fans existed throughout ancient Egyptian history. They had several forms and were made of different materials. They appear in two- and three-dimensional representations, as well as in texts. They relate to royalty and high officials and also feature in domestic settings, both out- and indoors. Fans were used for creating breeze, and providing shade in real life, and also during the journey to the afterlife, where they combined physical and metaphysical protection. Several names were associated with fans, depending on their functions, both in the secular and sacred world.

Earlier studies have either generally examined fans …

Kinetic Modeling Of Bacteria Removal From Suspensions By Magnetic Nanoparticle Capture And Magnetic Separation, Bowen J. Houser Dec 2024

Kinetic Modeling Of Bacteria Removal From Suspensions By Magnetic Nanoparticle Capture And Magnetic Separation, Bowen J. Houser

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the kinetic modeling of bacteria removal from suspensions using magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) capture and magnetic separation. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, especially those coated with polydopamine (pDA), were employed to bind with various bacterial species in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), apple juice, whole blood, and its components. By analyzing the capture efficiency and kinetics of capture across different bacterial species and mediums, we developed mathematical models describing the capture kinetics of bacteria by the pDA-MNPs. Experimental results demonstrated that pDA-coated MNPs achieved high capture efficiency with certain Gram-positive species like Staphylococcus aureus, and one Gram-negative species, Neisseria perflava; however, capture …
