The White Peacock – A Masculinity Study, Katherine Pollert Dec 2024

The White Peacock – A Masculinity Study, Katherine Pollert

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the feminist movement in England was making significant progress, effectively influencing the leading artists and scholars of the time to consider the nature of female oppression and to do their part to invoke change. Among these figures, D.H. Lawrence emerged as a provocative voice on gender and sexuality. To this day, his work remains a source of significant contention, often due to the controversial representation of gender and sexuality in his novels. For decades, feminist critics have debated Lawrence’s characterization of women, some accusing his work of misogyny, with others praising his careful …

The Lived Experience Of Older Adults Using Telemedicine Services, Cathy Anne Cahill Dec 2024

The Lived Experience Of Older Adults Using Telemedicine Services, Cathy Anne Cahill

Theses & Dissertations

The coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the subsequent pandemic transformed the healthcare delivery system in the U.S. Telemedicine became an essential mode of healthcare, and its usage increased significantly during the public health emergency. Telemedicine improved access to care, especially for vulnerable patient populations and those with chronic medical conditions. There were many other benefits, including convenience, cost savings, and reduced coronavirus transmission. It also reduced the strain on healthcare facilities and overburdened healthcare providers. A qualitative, Heideggerian phenomenological method of inquiry was conducted to understand the experience of the older adult population utilizing telemedicine services. These methods included a description …

The Compatibility Of The Substance Over Form Doctrine With Tax And Investment Treaties: A Case Study Of Lone Star V The Republic Of Korea, Blazej Kuzniacki Dec 2024

The Compatibility Of The Substance Over Form Doctrine With Tax And Investment Treaties: A Case Study Of Lone Star V The Republic Of Korea, Blazej Kuzniacki

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

In late August 2022, the Lone Star tribunal concluded one of the latest awards in tax-related investment treaty disputes (the tax-related claims account for almost USD 1.5 billion of the total of almost USD 4.7 billion claimed in compensation). It also is the first award in which the tribunal dealt with the application of the substance over form doctrine (SOFD) by tax authorities and courts of the host state to prevent the abuse of a double tax treaty (DTT), and the impact of the refusal to accord the claimants the benefits under the DTT via a domestic (Korean) SOFD on …

Alternative Agrifood Systems And The Economic Sustainability Of Farmers' Cooperatives: The Chinese Experience, Zhanping Hu, Qian Forrest Zhang Dec 2024

Alternative Agrifood Systems And The Economic Sustainability Of Farmers' Cooperatives: The Chinese Experience, Zhanping Hu, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Most registered farmers' cooperatives in China are de facto private enterprises; while many bring economic gains to farmers, they do not function as cooperatives. Among the small minority that started as authentic cooperatives, however, most struggled to provide economic benefits to members, unable to achieve economic sustainability. The failure of true farmers' cooperatives in China has been widely studied; the success of the few that did become economically sustainable, however, remains poorly understood. Using a sample of 70 farmers' cooperatives across the country and comparing three “extreme cases”—cooperatives that are both authentic and economically successful—with the rest, this study argues …

Using Simulations Of Future Extreme Weather Events To Escape The Resilience Trap: Experimental Evidence From Hong Kong, Terry Van Gevelt, J. Yang, K. N. Chan, L. Li, Fiona Williamson, B. G. Mcadoo, A. D. Switzer Dec 2024

Using Simulations Of Future Extreme Weather Events To Escape The Resilience Trap: Experimental Evidence From Hong Kong, Terry Van Gevelt, J. Yang, K. N. Chan, L. Li, Fiona Williamson, B. G. Mcadoo, A. D. Switzer

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Hong Kong is a hyper-dense coastal city that has long learned to live with a potentially disastrous extreme weather event: tropical cyclones. This was largely a reactionary process, with investments in soft and hard infrastructure made in the aftermath of devastating tropical cyclones. While the experiences of devastating tropical cyclones remain strong in the collective memory of the city, Hong Kong's present-day resilience has led to complacency, especially among the general public. We suggest that Hong Kong may be caught in a resilience trap, where previous success in building resilience may be hindering the city's ability to adapt to the …

Us Or Them: How Covid-19 Vaccine Priority Influences Perceptions Of Local-Migrant Worker Relations, Tengjiao Huang, Haochen Zhou, Liz Jones, Chin Wen Cong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare pre-existing societal fault lines, placing immense strain on intergroup relations and giving rise to xenophobic sentiments. Drawing on Realistic Conflict Theory (RCT) and Social Identity Approach (SIA), our study examined how the public allocation of COVID-19 variant vaccines could influence the dynamics between local citizens and migrant workers, and under what conditions. One key idea is that valued resource distribution that favour migrant workers may produce increased perceptions of realistic threats among local citizens which could lead to exacerbated negative attitudes and behaviours of high-status local citizens towards low-status migrants, whereas higher fairness perceptions of …

Longitudinal Bidirectional Relation Between Fear Of Missing Out And Risky Loot Box Consumption: Evidence For Fomo-Driven Loot Boxes Spiral Hypothesis, Andree Hartanto, K Tennakoon Appuhamillage Sandeeshwara Kasturiratna Dec 2024

Longitudinal Bidirectional Relation Between Fear Of Missing Out And Risky Loot Box Consumption: Evidence For Fomo-Driven Loot Boxes Spiral Hypothesis, Andree Hartanto, K Tennakoon Appuhamillage Sandeeshwara Kasturiratna

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Background: The integration of loot boxes has emerged as a significant factor contributing to the increasing revenue in the video gaming industry. However, this integration has also led to widespread engagement in risky loot box consumption. To understand the mechanism that drives and sustains such maladaptive behavior, we propose the FoMO-Driven Loot Boxes Spiral Hypothesis – positing that fear of missing out (FoMO) not only triggers initial engagement in risky loot box consumption but also perpetuates a self-reinforcing cycle, where such engagement intensifies subsequent FoMO, leading to further risky loot box consumption. Method and results: We conducted a 13-week longitudinal …

(In)Visible China: Understanding Chinese Global Orders, Hassan Karrar, William A. Callahan, Carwyn Morris, Stephen Whiteman

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Where is China going? What does its alternative global order look like? We hear a lot about China’s grand projects like the Belt and Road Initiative, but how are they experienced on the ground in Africa, South America, and Asia? The Chinese Global Orders project brings together twenty-two scholars from five continents to explore these questions. As these four commentaries show, it seeks to pluralize the discussion by exploring “Chinese” beyond the PRC nation-state, “Global” as a space beyond the international, and “Orders” as a plural set of norms. The project seeks to do more than just describe Global China’s material impact, …

Reconstructing Modernism: How Literary Experimentation Created Outlets For Faulkner And Toomer To Reinterpret The American South’S History, Jack Cattie Dec 2024

Reconstructing Modernism: How Literary Experimentation Created Outlets For Faulkner And Toomer To Reinterpret The American South’S History, Jack Cattie

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

An era of literary and artistic experimentation known as Modernism began in the 1920s allowing authors to reinterpret history and society. American Modernist authors William Faulkner and Jean Toomer used a variety of innovative literary techniques to depict post-Civil War Reconstruction (1864-1877) and its aftermath. Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! and Toomer’s Cane examine themes of race, violence, and the Lost Cause by manipulating time and perspective, shifting genres, and introducing new sentence structures. This article situates these novels alongside contemporary historical monographs and articles including works by Eric Foner, Deborah Gray White, Joe William Trotter Jr., and David Blight to demonstrate …

Old Becoming New Again: A Form-Function And Narrative Analysis Of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ 'Fantasia On A Theme Of Thomas Tallis', Aileen E. Sager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ralph Vaughan Williams, a leading figure in the early twentieth-century movement to preserve traditional English music, composed Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis as a tribute to his love of Tudor music and English folksong. The piece is based on a psalm setting by Thomas Tallis, known as the Third Mode Melody, which features the Phrygian mode. Vaughan Williams discovered this theme while researching for the new English Hymnal. A brief history of the Tallis theme, along with an exploration of Vaughan Williams' education and early endeavors as a composer, are critical to understanding the Fantasia's historical …

Estimating The Possible Qpos Of M87* From The Parameters Of A Hairy Kerr Black Hole, Orhan Donmez, Fatih Dogan Dec 2024

Estimating The Possible Qpos Of M87* From The Parameters Of A Hairy Kerr Black Hole, Orhan Donmez, Fatih Dogan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we study the dynamics of the shock cone formed around a hairy Kerr black hole due to Bondi– Hoyle–Lyttleton (BHL) accretion and investigate the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) behaviors resulting from the black hole-cone interaction, aiming to predict the QPO frequencies that may occur around the M87∗ black hole. To achieve this, we use the hairy Kerr black hole parameters consistent with the observed shadow parameters of M87∗ as initial conditions in numerical simulations, revealing the structure of the resulting shock cone and QPOs in a strong gravitational field. Numerical calculations show that the deviation of …

Dual Nature Of Magnetism Driven By Momentum Dependent F-D Kondo Hybridization, Byungkyun Kang, Yongbin Lee, Liqin Ke, Hyunsoo Kim, Myoung Hwan Kim, Chul Hong Park

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The intricate nature of magnetism in uranium-based Kondo lattices is a consequence of correlations between U-5f and conduction electrons. Previously, the source of magnetism has been ascribed to either Mott physics or Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction, both of which are not fully applicable to uranium-based Kondo lattices. Using linearized quasiparticle self-consistent GW plus dynamical mean-field theory, we demonstrate a crossover from incoherent to coherent f-d Kondo cloud in the paramagnetic phase of UTe2, USbTe and USbSe. As the transition occurs, we observe an augmented f-d coherence and Pauli-like magnetic susceptibility, with a substantial frozen magnetic moment of U-5f persisting. We …

Nowadays, with the development of correspondence via the Internet and the crises that occurred after 2019, many institutions in various fields, whether public or private, and banks and financial transactions, began to carry out most of them via the Internet and needed to sign various documents electronically. There are many problems with the signature images, documents, transactions, or files that make the verification process difficult or require preprocessing for signature. One important part of biometric authentication is signature verification, which tries to separate genuine signatures from fraud. Both online and offline signature verification techniques are examined in this survey. In …
