Joseph Moxon: Fueled By Science, Extinguished By Class. How A Forgotten Middle-Classed Early Modern English Puritan Printer Mathematician And Globe-Maker Helped Forge The Scientific Revolution And Democratize Knowledge Among The Trades, Kenneth L. Macro Jr.

Master's Theses

Joseph Moxon, raised within the trades, elevated into the middle-class, was an inducted Fellow of the Royal Society, Hydrographer to the King’s Most Excellent Majesty, Printer, Author, Translator, Maker of Globes and of Spheres, Maker of Maps and of Mathematical Instruments, Engraver, and Entrepreneur. Moxon was the quintessential Renaissance Man. A tradesman living in a time of great scientific intrigue and discovery, Moxon, acknowledged by few mid-seventeenth century historians, rightfully contributed his scientific discoveries—in the forms of tutorials and manuals written for the common man—as a testimony to all printers who have helped in the progression of the Scientific Revolution. …

Communication In War: How Harper's Weekly Reported On Andersonville From 1864 To 1865, Pamela Budinger

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The unifying theme of this thesis is human communication in war, specifically the American Civil War. History can be seen as studies of past communications and the actions that preceded and followed such communications. Scholars of the Civil War era are limited with regard to their source material compared to scholars that might be studying the twentieth century, or today. Today’s historians can tap a plethora of media that hold traces of human communication: videotape, television, tape recordings, letters, and other forms of written communication. Not all of these are available to scholars studying the Civil War. This thesis adopts …

Conceptualizing Centrality In Micro-Level Internationalization Through A Decolonial Approach, Omolabake Fakunle Dec 2024

Conceptualizing Centrality In Micro-Level Internationalization Through A Decolonial Approach, Omolabake Fakunle

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Micro-level internationalization offers possibilities to explore different human experiences in international higher education. This is especially crucial given well-reported issues of racism, micro-aggression, and underrepresentation of racially minoritized international academic staff, whose voices remain mostly invisible in internationalization discourses. Previous research connects these issues to the continuing legacy of colonial logic, that privileges hegemonic Westerncentric knowledge systems. In this paper, centrality is proposed as a conceptual framework that offers a direct response to the question of epistemicide which Santos (2014) explains as the exclusion of the knowledges of racially marginalized persons [in or with origins] from the Global South. It …

Designing And Building An Action Figure Of Alexander The Great To Better Engage Young Learners In History, Patrick Sandoval

All Theses

This paper discusses creating an action figure of Alexander the Great as a means of garnering a child’s interest in a specific setting of human history. Physical mediums have merit as supplemental tools for traditional learning methods for children, with action figures providing an outlet for role-playing and enhanced engagement. Topics include the significance of Alexander the Great, as well as the process of creating an action figure of him using production methods of digital character sculpting and 3D printing. Its design takes inspiration from the Street Fighter series, Classical and Hellenistic Greek sculpture, and professional wrestling action figures.

Field Prevalence Of Ring Nematodes In South Carolina And Its Potential To Predispose Peanut Pods To Aflatoxin Contamination, Sarala Giri

All Theses

Peanut ring nematode, Mesocriconema ornatum is a nematode pest of peanut which can cause necrotic lesions on pods, pegs, and roots. It has been reported to facilitate secondary infections in peanut and other crops resulting in more significant losses in yield and quality. Aspergillus flavus is a ubiquitous facultative saprophyte that produces aflatoxin, the most problematic mycotoxin for global health and economy. Experiments were conducted at the Edisto Research and Education Center of Clemson University to examine the relationship of ring nematode populations at pegging and harvest with aflatoxin concentration in peanut kernels due to infection by A. flavus …

Using Ai Tools To Unmask Sarcasm, Sidra Tehniyath Lnu Dec 2024

Using Ai Tools To Unmask Sarcasm, Sidra Tehniyath Lnu

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Sarcasm can be identified in newspaper headlines in digital communication, as it is contextual and has low inter- and intra-observer reliability. This research aims to improve sarcastic comment identification using a natural language processing approach, especially the BI-LSTM. The primary concern is to use fine-tuning methods to enhance the ways that strengthen the sarcasm identification rate, which regards the factors that complicate an automatic identification process. The study explores the impact of techniques such as early stopping, optimal loss function selection, and hyperparameter tuning to enhance the model's performance. The research questions are: Q1) How can fine-tuning techniques for BI-LSTM …

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff Dec 2024

The Inclusion Of Metacognition In Source Evaluation Instruction, Anthony Tardiff

Communications in Information Literacy

Though the ACRL Framework holds metacognition as crucial to exercising information literacy, its emphasis was reduced from prominence in early drafts to a single mention in the final document. At the same time, few of the frequently-taught sets of source evaluation criteria include a step for self-awareness. This raises the question: do librarians explicitly teach metacognitive concepts when they teach source evaluation? Online library guides about source evaluation from various colleges and universities in Washington state were analyzed, and librarians who taught source evaluation were surveyed to determine whether and to what extent metacognitive concepts were included as part of …

Mapping Out Information Literacy: A Textbook Review, Alyssa Russo Dec 2024

Mapping Out Information Literacy: A Textbook Review, Alyssa Russo

Communications in Information Literacy

This narrative review examines the thematic content and evolution of information literacy textbooks published between 2005 and 2022. Analyzing sixteen textbooks, it explores two themes: the research process and conceptual foundations of information literacy. The research process theme highlights the procedural aspects of conducting library research, delineating the steps from topic selection to presentation. The conceptual foundations of IL theme reveals a discrepancy in how textbooks address the broader conceptual underpinnings of information literacy, particularly the context of a rapidly changing information society. This review highlights the focus on practical skills and the relative lack of discussions on broader contexts …

Thinking And Doing Beyond Science And Risk Communication As Mere Transmission, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon Dec 2024

Thinking And Doing Beyond Science And Risk Communication As Mere Transmission, Inez Z. Ponce De Leon

Department of Communication Faculty Publications

I look back on my professional experience as both bench and social scientist, and examine my misun derstandings of science communication as a field, which were fueled by my ideologically-driven stance on the primacy of the bench sciences over all other fields of study. I begin with my work as a molecular biologist, continue with my socialization into the social sciences at the PhD level, and narrate my ex periences as a researcher attempting to break down the notion of science and risk communication as mere vessels for sharing scientific information. I do this by discussing my research findings, and …

Exploring Intensive Care Registered Nurses’ Perceptions Of The Family Support Person During Family-Witnessed Resuscitation, Carmen Petersen, Martha O. Morales, Natalie Bermudez Dec 2024

Exploring Intensive Care Registered Nurses’ Perceptions Of The Family Support Person During Family-Witnessed Resuscitation, Carmen Petersen, Martha O. Morales, Natalie Bermudez

Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal

Background: In-hospital cardiac arrests are common occurrences that family members may be present for. Family-witnessed resuscitation (FWR) is a well-studied, evidence-based practice with positive outcomes for family members. However, some nurses disagree with FWR because of the potential for family member disruptions. The presence of a hospital-employed family support person (FSP) dedicated to providing care to family members during FWR may be beneficial in improving nurses’ perspectives on FWR. While evidence shows the benefits of the FSP for family members during FWR, there is little evidence related to nurses’ perceptions of the FSP. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative descriptive …
