Using The Perspectives Of Kentucky Family And Consumer Sciences Extension Agents To Develop A Sustainable Eating Curriculum, Lindley Barker, Heather Norman-Burgdolf, Annie Koempel, Katie Pickford, Tammy Stephenson, Dawn Brewer

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Sustainable eating may benefit both the environment and human health. Currently, no Extension programs addressing healthy and sustainable eating are available that target adults in communities. Since sustainable eating is a sensitive topic, this project engaged Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Extension agents in Kentucky, to garner their community expertise and perspectives on sustainable eating to help develop an appropriate Extension curriculum. By following the Curriculum Development Process for Cooperative Extension Programming model, we involved FCS agents in developing and reviewing a sustainable eating curriculum. The proposed curriculum included content that reflected sustainable eating principles of reducing overconsumption of foods, …

Evaluating The Success Of A Relocated Mussel Community In The Lower Sulphur River, Texas, Rachel M. Leicher Dec 2024

Evaluating The Success Of A Relocated Mussel Community In The Lower Sulphur River, Texas, Rachel M. Leicher

Biology Theses

Conservation efforts to preserve freshwater mussel communities have become more common as these animals become increasingly threatened by their changing habitats. As humans continue to shape and change the world around them, aquatic species living in modified and disturbed water systems can be negatively impacted leading to decline of the ecosystem. During disturbance events involving a stream, river, or pond, the relocation of affected mussel beds is becoming more widespread. Although there are few of these studies, many of those that have been conducted are seen as successful in relocating and conserving their mussel communities. This study focuses on detection …

All Musselman Library Staff Works

This chapter concerns the development of a First World War Digital Humanities project at a small US liberal arts college. The project, based on a manuscript collection of documents, photographs, artefacts, and nearly 300 letters (primarily written between 1915 and 1919), was designed from the beginning to be truly collaborative, featuring the creative and scholarly work of undergraduate students, a faculty member, a librarian, and an archivist to tell a unique story from the Western Front. What initially began as a project to digitally preserve and promote primary source materials for a wider audience adapted and changed over the course …

Unboxing The Balikbayan: Filipino Third Culture Kids' Sense Of Identity And Belonging Upon Repatriation, Zayda De Guzman

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Third Culture Kids (TCKs), or children who grow up in a country different from their parent’s home country, have a unique identity formation is attributed to their mobile upbringing, and is described as “rootless” due to their sense of identity and belonging going past a geographical place. Due to their upbringing, TCKs often struggle with repatriation distress, finding it difficult to maintain a sense of belonging upon returning to their passport country. While TCKs have garnered significant attention from scholars, most of that has been directed towards TCKs from Western countries, such as the United States. This thesis explores how …

Burgeoning global trade and colonial policies promoted transformations in land use and agriculture throughout tropical regions in the 19th and 20th centuries, but the local and regional ecological consequences of landscape changes are still being identified and analysed. The Philippine Archipelago, which experienced successive colonial regimes across more than 7100 islands, exemplifies the multiplicity of ecological outcomes produced by these transformations. To better characterise diverse landscape change, we use colonial censuses and datasets to assess land use, production and agricultural yields in the Philippines during the late Spanish and early U.S. colonial periods (ca. 1870–1925). Our novel digital, quantitative analysis …

Indisposed To Write: Teaching A Visceral Poetics, Miriam L. Atkin Dec 2024

Indisposed To Write: Teaching A Visceral Poetics, Miriam L. Atkin

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

This essay begins from the premise that acts of thinking and writing are shaped immanently by corporeal need. Accordingly, my aim is to sketch a vision of composition pedagogy that acknowledges the moves and modulations of the thinking body. The route I take to get there explores four works of critical prose that mobilize form and content toward a radical re-orientation of body-in-space and body-in-writing. These texts—by Eleni Stecopoulos, Robert Kocik, William James, and Eli Clare—are to varying degrees experimental, demonstrating a manner of textual difficulty that signals the visceral difficulty implied in any act of writing. What follows is …

Mapping James Moffett: Formative Assessment And Common Core Standards For The Contemporary Language Arts Classroom, Jonathan M. Marine, Ruth Nathan Dec 2024

Mapping James Moffett: Formative Assessment And Common Core Standards For The Contemporary Language Arts Classroom, Jonathan M. Marine, Ruth Nathan

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

In this article, we argue for an expanded conception of language assess-ment based on the principles of James Moffett and centered on outfitting teachers with useful information with which to guide their practice and optimize student learning. Importantly, we begin the article by demonstrating that Moffett’s interest in assessing language growth occurs much earlier than previously thought. Then, we sketch a composite view of Moffett’s evolving views on assessment as drawn from works across the span of his career while also investigating the many thinkers who influenced his ideas in order to situate them in the historical and educational con-text …

Analyzing Food Sources And Food Insecurity Of Kichwa Farming Families In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Reina Watanabe Dec 2024

Analyzing Food Sources And Food Insecurity Of Kichwa Farming Families In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Reina Watanabe

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses

While the right to food is internationally recognized and the United Nations established the sustainable development goal to end hunger and achieve food security by 2030, many households remain without consistent access to food in 2024. In Latin America, approximately 4 in 10 households were reported as food insecure in 2020 with higher rates in rural and indigenous communities. Rural areas, which have great overlap with indigenous communities in Ecuador, experience disproportionately high levels of poverty and food insecurity compared to urban areas. The most populous indigenous nationality in the Ecuadorian Amazon and the participants of this study are the …

How Detrimental Is Transunion V. Ramirez, Really? Understanding The Impact On Environmental Law, Lauren Young Dec 2024

How Detrimental Is Transunion V. Ramirez, Really? Understanding The Impact On Environmental Law, Lauren Young

Washington Law Review

In 2021, the United States Supreme Court issued a controversial opinion with the potential to constrict the standing doctrine. TransUnion v. Ramirez appeared to alter standing’s “concrete harm” requirement, which would significantly restrict plaintiffs’ ability to invoke the jurisdiction of federal district courts. Building off its 2016 case, Spokeo v. Robins, the Court declared that intangible harms are only concrete when “plaintiffs have identified a close historical or common-law analog[] for their asserted injury.” The “common-law analog[]” required a “close relationship to harms traditionally recognized as providing a basis for lawsuits in American courts.” The Court mandated this requirement …

Building Social Capital In Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, Glenn M. Birch Dec 2024

Building Social Capital In Nonprofit Human Service Organizations, Glenn M. Birch

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects

All forms of capital enhance the ability to accomplish tasks efficiently. Like physical, human, and financial capital, social capital enables individuals or organizations to accomplish more than is otherwise possible. When groups undertake actions to cooperate and achieve a shared purpose, it is a sign of social capital at work. This study looks specifically at human service nonprofit organizations to examine strategies and practices that can lead to the building of social capital. As a comparative case study of two nonprofit organizations, I explore how nonprofit organizations learn to build social capital across lines of difference; look at how bridging …

New Legal Realism At 20: Rethinking Law In An Era Of Populism And Social Movements, Jeffrey Omari, Pablo Rueda-Saiz, Richard Ashby Wilson Dec 2024

New Legal Realism At 20: Rethinking Law In An Era Of Populism And Social Movements, Jeffrey Omari, Pablo Rueda-Saiz, Richard Ashby Wilson

Articles

This Article critically examines the New Legal Realism (NLR) movement on its twentieth anniversary and illuminates its distinctive intellectual contributions. In evaluating NLR's unique methodological and substantive contributions, we explore the movement's relationship to other interdisciplinary theories and empirical approaches to law. NLR approaches show a commitment to a comparative, cross-national exploration of legal phenomena while allowing for grounded generalizations about the relationship between law and society. NLR approaches embrace a diverse range of methods and emphasize the importance of "looking up, down, and sideways." Notably, NLR embraces both "top-down" and "bottom-up" methods, providing comprehensive insights into the intricate interactions …

Ravel In The Post-Tonal World: An Analysis Of Select Songs From The Collection Histoires Naturelles, Ames E. Tonnesen Dec 2024

Ravel In The Post-Tonal World: An Analysis Of Select Songs From The Collection Histoires Naturelles, Ames E. Tonnesen

Undergraduate Honors Theses

When Ravel composed Histoires Naturelles, the musical world was in a climate of change. As composers began to transition away from tonality, chords and chord progressions lost importance as other ways to maintain a hierarchy of pitches were explored. While the functional grammar of standard tonality never disappeared per se, these traditional tonal components (chords, key areas, etc.) adopted different roles. It was in this environment that Ravel composed music. However, even though he had every ability to abandon the rules altogether, he used the past as a foundation rather than an edict that must be maintained out of …

An Exploration Of Np-Complete Problems In Finite And Infinite Constrains, Kayla Marie Schilz Dec 2024

An Exploration Of Np-Complete Problems In Finite And Infinite Constrains, Kayla Marie Schilz

Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is a long-standing problem in the mathematical world known as the P vs NP problem which relates to how we classify math problems. Problems in P are problems that are easy to solve and verify relatively quick whereas and NP are quick to verify, but it is unknown how easy or hard it is to solve quickly. We will discuss what it means to be solved quickly later on. Moving to the next classification, NP is either is equal to P, which would inherently make all P problems equal to NP-Complete, or P is simply not equal to NP. …

The Inclusion Of Behavioral Healthcare Providers In Primary Care Settings: A Phenomenological Study, Janette A. Hernandez Dec 2024

The Inclusion Of Behavioral Healthcare Providers In Primary Care Settings: A Phenomenological Study, Janette A. Hernandez

Dissertations

With the shift toward integrated care, Behavior Healthcare Providers (BHPs) play a crucial role in improving patient outcomes and accessibility to mental health services. However, challenges such as time constraints, role ambiguity, and limited understanding of BHP contributions persist. This qualitative phenomenological study explores the experiences of BHPs in integrated primary care settings. Using semi-structured interviews with eight BHPs, the study examines their roles, challenges, and contributions within healthcare teams. Findings indicate that BHPs enhance collaboration with medical staff and facilitate timely mental health interventions. Yet, barriers such as inconsistent role recognition and workflow inefficiencies hinder full integration. This study …

In The Name Of Tradition: A Comparative Study On Nonestablishment, Sungmin Cho Dec 2024

In The Name Of Tradition: A Comparative Study On Nonestablishment, Sungmin Cho

Washington Law Review

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the government from establishing a state religion. The U.S. Supreme Court has developed different tests to determine whether a government action complies with this principle. Over the past few decades, the Court gradually turned to whether the challenged practice is consistent with the history and tradition of the nation.

Meanwhile, the separation of church and state is not a notion unique to the United States. After centuries of Confucian monarchy, Korea drafted a modern constitution with a similar provision. Nevertheless, the Constitutional Court of Korea has upheld …

Abdication Of Power: Arizona V. Navajo Nation And Judicial Refusal To Enforce The Federal Trust Relationship, Jessica Yin Dec 2024

Abdication Of Power: Arizona V. Navajo Nation And Judicial Refusal To Enforce The Federal Trust Relationship, Jessica Yin

Washington Law Review

Over 150 years ago, the federal government signed a treaty promising the Navajo people a permanent home within the bounds of their ancestral homeland. To this day, that promise remains unfulfilled because the Navajo people face a severe water access crisis. When the Navajo Nation brought the United States to the Supreme Court to enforce its promise, the Court declined to hold the federal government accountable.

This Comment analyzes the Supreme Court’s decision in Arizona v. Navajo Nation through the lens of the judiciary’s historical approach to the federal trust relationship. The Court has traditionally defined the federal trust relationship …

Quantitative assessments measured changes in flexibility, balance, speed, and …

Exploring The Impact Of Using Mirrors Versus Not Using Mirrors In An Intermediate High School Dance Class, Melanie Monnich Dec 2024

Exploring The Impact Of Using Mirrors Versus Not Using Mirrors In An Intermediate High School Dance Class, Melanie Monnich

Master's Theses

The purpose of the study was to understand the use of mirrors vs. not using mirrors in the high school classroom. This thesis also expanded on research done in the last twenty years regarding students' relationship to the mirror and how educators could better use or not use the mirror in the classroom. The researcher asked five essential questions that guided this thesis:

Q1 How does using mirrors vs. not using mirrors affect a student's body image in a high school dance class?

Q2 Is it necessary to always use mirrors in the classroom as a learning tool for students? …
