Coding With Those Who Show Up: Two Methodologies On Technical Committee Work, Mark E. Eaton Dec 2024

Coding With Those Who Show Up: Two Methodologies On Technical Committee Work, Mark E. Eaton

Publications and Research

This paper considers our library’s attempt at applying a “laissez-faire leadership” model to technical committee work. Since its introduction in the 1990s, scholarship on laissez-faire leadership has historically viewed the concept very negatively. However, we argue here that many of these perspectives are straw man arguments that do not adequately consider the possibilities of a laissez-faire model. Following some dissenting voices in the literature, we would like to reclaim the laissez-faire model as a way to facilitate library technical work under certain very specific circumstances. This paper will describe the organizational context where these laissez-faire methods worked for us. Our …

Testing Routine Activity Theory: Behavioural Pathways Linking Temperature To Crime, Christopher Thomas, Jinuk Jeong, Kevin T. Wolff Dec 2024

Testing Routine Activity Theory: Behavioural Pathways Linking Temperature To Crime, Christopher Thomas, Jinuk Jeong, Kevin T. Wolff

Publications and Research

This study examines direct observations of outdoor routine activities to investigate the pathways through which temperatures shape crime. Daily administrative records of crime, weather, and outdoor activity were assembled from 2015 to 2019 in New York City. Mediation analysis (with bootstrapped standard errors) reveals that alterations in routine activities account for a statistically significant, yet modest, proportion of temperature’s relationship with homicides, shootings, assaults, larceny, and public consumption violations. The comparable mediation effects across violent and nonviolent crimes support routine activity theory as an explanatory framework for understanding temperature's impact on crime. The measures introduced here offer a novel approach …

Utility Of Immobilized Metal Salens As Electrocatalysts: Fuel Cells And Organic Electrosynthesis, Zachary A. Nguyen, Shelley D. Minteer Dec 2024

Utility Of Immobilized Metal Salens As Electrocatalysts: Fuel Cells And Organic Electrosynthesis, Zachary A. Nguyen, Shelley D. Minteer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

There have been significant advancements in the electrosynthesis of fuels and organic molecules, making it an increasingly sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional chemical redox reagents. Early versions of these systems faced challenges in chemo selectivity due to high applied overpotentials, which have been mitigated with the introduction of molecular electrocatalysts, like metal salens (MSalens). These MSalens reduce the required overpotentials, increase turnover numbers (TON), and have simple modularity within their ligand structure allowing for tunable selectivity. While these MSalen electrocatalysts are typically used homogeneously for engineering simplicity, downstream separations are often costly and time-consuming. Immobilization of MSalens addresses these …

Development Of A Ripk1 Degrader To Enhance Antitumor Immunity, Xin Yu, Dong Lu, Xiaoli Qi, Rishi Ram Paudel, Hanfeng Lin, Bryan L Holloman, Feng Jin, Longyong Xu, Lang Ding, Weiyi Peng, Meng C Wang, Xi Chen, Jin Wang

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The scaffolding function of receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) confers intrinsic and extrinsic resistance to immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs) and emerges as a promising target for improving cancer immunotherapies. To address the challenge posed by a poorly defined binding pocket within the intermediate domain of RIPK1, here we harness proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) technology to develop a RIPK1 degrader, LD4172. LD4172 exhibits potent and selective RIPK1 degradation both in vitro and in vivo. Degradation of RIPK1 by LD4172 triggers immunogenic cell death, enhances tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte responses, and sensitizes tumors to anti-PD1 therapy in female C57BL/6J mice. This work reports …

Cutaneous Nodules Secondary To Mycobacterium Avium Complex In A Patient With Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Jay Patel, Shannon Sayyadioskoie, Hanna Siatecka, Theodore Rosen

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

We present a patient with human immunodeficiency virus who developed multiple painful lesions that previously in the past had speciated as Cryptococcus neoformans cutaneously, and in the lung. Despite induction therapy for presumed re-infection, the patient did not improve so a biopsy was performed and this was speciated as Mycobacterium avium complex, with final diagnosis being disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex. This case highlights the importance of considering a broad differential diagnosis for any new lesions regardless of prior culture data.

Schools Apart: Curricular Stratification Across School Socioeconomic Compositions And Implications For Educational Inequality In The Us, Daniel Mackin Freeman Dec 2024

Schools Apart: Curricular Stratification Across School Socioeconomic Compositions And Implications For Educational Inequality In The Us, Daniel Mackin Freeman

Dissertations and Theses

Motivated by longstanding sociological theories and utilizing the most current, large, and nationally representative data, this dissertation aims to describe and add nuance to our understanding of how the curriculum US youth are exposed to is stratified by the socioeconomic composition of the schools they attend. All three empirical chapters suggest that school SES contributes to substantial differences in school structure, as evidenced by differences in course-taking patterns and how course-taking relates to academic achievement in high school and beyond. The first study suggests that the relationship between curricular intensity in secondary school and postsecondary achievement is variable depending on …

A Mechanistic Study Of Silicon Nanocrystal Formation Via Solid State Synthesis, Katherine Mccarthy Weinfurter Dec 2024

A Mechanistic Study Of Silicon Nanocrystal Formation Via Solid State Synthesis, Katherine Mccarthy Weinfurter

Dissertations and Theses

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) show promising physiochemical properties that could be used in industrial applications. The production of SiNCs through solid-state synthesis is ideal due to relatively low cost of equipment and chemical reagents, as well as the ability to scale-up production. A widely known and commonly used precursor previously used in solid-state synthesis for SiNCs, hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSiO1.5), was discontinued in chemical manufacturing, which has led to researching alternative precursors (or starting materials). We have identified that there is a gap of knowledge related to producing these precursors, as well as the mechanistic understanding of the chemical reactions …

A Contemporary Examination Of Racial Intraminority Relations: Attitudes, Motivations, And Barriers To Participation In Collective Action, Jaboa Shawntaé Lake Dec 2024

A Contemporary Examination Of Racial Intraminority Relations: Attitudes, Motivations, And Barriers To Participation In Collective Action, Jaboa Shawntaé Lake

Dissertations and Theses

Social movements globally and within the U.S. are gaining widespread acknowledgment as many individuals become more aware of systems of disadvantage and oppression, gain a better understanding of their root causes, and engage in collective ways to approach social change. Social science research on engagement with collective action has started to go beyond looking only at majority-minority relations (such as between White and Black people) to examine solidarity and coalition building between minoritized groups. This dissertation expands the literature both on collective action and intraminority intergroup relations through three manuscripts. Chapter II explores various social attitudes (e.g., awareness of privilege …

Background: The in vitro cultivation of human noroviruses allows a comparison of antibody levels measured in neutralization and histo-blood group antigen (HBGA)-blocking assays.

Methods: Serum samples collected during the evaluation of an investigational norovirus vaccine (HIL-214 [formerly TAK-214]) were assayed for neutralizing antibody levels against the vaccine's prototype Norwalk virus/genogroup I, genotype 1 (GI.1) (P1) virus strain. Results were compared with those previously determined using HBGA-blocking assays.

Results: Neutralizing antibody seroresponses were observed in 83% of 24 vaccinated adults, and antibody levels were highly correlated (r = 0.81; P < .001) with those measured by HBGA blocking.

Conclusions: Genogroup I, genotype 1 (GI.1)-specific HBGA-blocking antibodies are a surrogate …

Pharmacologic Blockade Of A Pioneer Transcription Factor, Katerina Cermakova, H Courtney Hodges Dec 2024

Pharmacologic Blockade Of A Pioneer Transcription Factor, Katerina Cermakova, H Courtney Hodges

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Cancers frequently co-opt lineage-specific transcription factors (TF) utilized in normal development to sustain proliferation. However, the effects of these TFs on tumor development depend considerably on where in the genome they bind. A new article by Taylor and colleagues expands on previously developed diamidine compounds that obstruct the DNA binding sites of the pioneer TF PU.1 (SPI1) in acute myeloid leukemia. Immobilization and sequencing of genomic DNA targeted by these compounds revealed that these inhibitors alter the genomic binding patterns of PU.1. The authors report that their strategy constrains the genomic binding preferences of PU.1, leading to redistribution of PU.1 …

Orosipon Kan Bikolnon: Interrupting The Nation, Raniela Barbaza Dec 2024

Orosipon Kan Bikolnon: Interrupting The Nation, Raniela Barbaza

Kritika Kultura

If narration points to notions of fixity in terms of the position of the narrator and the subsequent structuring of events, orosipon, a Bikolnon word for “story,” suggests a refusal to fixity both in terms of the location of the narrator and the structure itself of the story: the story never stops being formed as it passes through multiple speakers. Orosipon, coming from the root word osip which approximates the verb “tell,” points to more than one person involved in an act of telling, which makes the act of telling proper to no one in particular: indeed, it is improper …

Crossing Borders: Philippine Activist Theater And Martial Law, Bonifacio P. Ilagan Dec 2024

Crossing Borders: Philippine Activist Theater And Martial Law, Bonifacio P. Ilagan

Kritika Kultura

Positing theater as political, this paper intends to locate activist theater in the context of the Philippine cultural setting and political milieu on the eve of the Martial Law declaration in 1972. It shall illustrate why this kind of theater, frowned upon by some sectors in the artistic community, had taken unto itself the task of redefining the stage and employing it in a political mass movement that ultimately blazed a trail in Philippine theater and also challenged the socioeconomic structures of society. This paper integrates the theory and practice of the activist theater in the Philippines in the late …

Philippine Theater In Confinement: Breaking Out Of Martial Law, Bienvenido Lumbera Dec 2024

Philippine Theater In Confinement: Breaking Out Of Martial Law, Bienvenido Lumbera

Kritika Kultura

The declaration of Martial Law during the Marcos administration brought about a period of censorship and a complete rejection of any form of protest against the established figures of authority. Activists then looked for other forms of communication through which they could channel their dissent and rally more people towards the cause. It was during this period that Philippine theater was taken out of the stage and into the streets, when the “art” of the “elite” was brought down to the masses. These efforts also shifted the language of Philippine theater from American English to Pilipino, marking the beginning of …

Socialist Shenanigans And Emerald Epiphanies: The Case Of Margaretta D'Arcy And John Arden, Tim Prentki Dec 2024

Socialist Shenanigans And Emerald Epiphanies: The Case Of Margaretta D'Arcy And John Arden, Tim Prentki

Kritika Kultura

This essay explores the two meanings of “radical” – the popular one of “sharp-edged’”or “extreme” and the original one of “rooted within the culture” – in relation to selected works of D’Arcy and Arden: The Non-Stop Connolly Show (1975), Vandaleur’s Folly (1978) and The Little Gray Home in the West (1978). Within the space of contradiction between these meanings, the paper considers such issues as the political function of the outsider, the rival claims of reform and revolution, relationships between text and means of production and between forms and audience ownership. The perennial question of the battle between republicanism and …

"He Calls His Dada Still": Nineteenth-Century English Radicalism And The Drama Of Pádraic Pearse, James Moran Dec 2024

"He Calls His Dada Still": Nineteenth-Century English Radicalism And The Drama Of Pádraic Pearse, James Moran

Kritika Kultura

This essay explores the extent to which some of the political upheavals of twentieth-century Ireland, and their related theatrical manifestations, might reveal a series of affinities with the organised political radicalism of nineteenth-century England. Specifically, the playhouse dramas written by the executed leader of the Easter Rising of 1916, Pádraic Pearse (also known as Pádraig or Patrick) point back to the earlier Liberal reform meetings that took place in the English midlands. The key connecting figure is the revolutionary leader’s father, James Pearse, who spent his life between Birmingham and Dublin, but who has tended to be overlooked by historians …

"Not Always, But Often": Introduction To A Special Issue On Radical Theatre And Ireland, Victor Merriman Dec 2024

"Not Always, But Often": Introduction To A Special Issue On Radical Theatre And Ireland, Victor Merriman

Kritika Kultura

This article sketches Irish history and how Irish nationalism deployed cultural production – including radical theatre – as a means of asserting itself as a political and moral force. “Radical Theatre” prompts questions around what both Baz Kershaw and Herbert Blau refer to as “efficacy,” insofar as it implies engagements with content, form, and audiences outside of those which characterise accepted, dominant or commercial manifestations of theatre practice. And yet, scholars and practitioners of radical theatre confront the slipperiness of the concept of radical theatre: it shifts emphasis between theatre as cultural intervention for social progress (a critical, subversive, ethical …

Disciplining The Times And Spaces Of Modernism, Pamela L. Caughie Dec 2024

Disciplining The Times And Spaces Of Modernism, Pamela L. Caughie

Kritika Kultura

This introduction provides an overview of selections from Disciplining Modernism (Palgrave 2009), an anthology of critical works that consider disciplinarity in conceptualizing the times and places of modernism. The selections provide extended examples of how a scholar writes about a particular modern artifact or phenomenon, not so much to illustrate how modernism and modernity can mean different things in different disciplines, but to provide various conceptual models for comparative studies of modernism and modernity.

History As Rumor: The Political Fantasy Of The Negrense Elite In Vicente Groyon'sthe Sky Over Dimas, Mayel P. Martin Dec 2024

History As Rumor: The Political Fantasy Of The Negrense Elite In Vicente Groyon'sthe Sky Over Dimas, Mayel P. Martin

Kritika Kultura

This ideological critique reads Vicente Groyon’s The Sky Over Dimas in its appropriation of historiographic metafiction. The paper argues that its two borrowed modes, historiography and metafiction, function as a symbolic act following Fredric Jameson’s Marxist interpretive ground of the political. In The Sky Over Dimas, historiographic metafiction is a symbolic act that articulates the political unconscious/fantasy of the landed elite while repressing their role in the perpetuation of the feudal system of sugar in Negros. This provisionalizing or bracketing of history in the novel, unlike other historiographic metafictional texts like Great Philippine Jungle Energy Café, State of War and …
