A Multimodal Examination Of Altered Reward Processing In Anhedonia, Christopher J.H. Pirrung
A Multimodal Examination Of Altered Reward Processing In Anhedonia, Christopher J.H. Pirrung
Psychology ETDs
Anhedonia refers to a complex deficit in depression, characterized by deficits in reward processing. An EEG signal of reward, the Reward Positivity, has been proposed as a potential biomarker of depressive symptoms. In this investigation, we define generative neural sources of the Reward Positivity using MEG and examine the source level deficits of this signal associated with anhedonia. A composite measure of anhedonia was defined in this sample, combining several self-report measures of anhedonia. Ventral hypoactivation was present in depressed individuals alongside a counterintuitive positive correlation with anhedonia. An independent study using fMRI in the same subjects found similar, but …

Music Is My Language: Analyzing Autism Acceptance Within Communities, Cielo Bake
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis explores the intersection of music and romanticism, drawing upon the emotional expressionism of Romantic era composers, inspired by Romantic literature, such as Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt as a vehicle for communication. The ultimate goal was to determine a way to bridge the neurodivergent and neurotypical gaps in connection, enabling a stronger community that values every member of its locale and allows for a sense of belonging. The format for this research is through a performance, comprised of a piano recital of Romantic Era music by Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt and improvised original music with a speech. …

Publications
This design-based research study explored the feedback process, resulting actions, and changing instructional perspectives involving teachers, community members, and researchers leading to enhanced professional development offered to K-12 teachers of multilingual students. Specifically, the feedback from a community advisory council and teachers significantly shaped researchers’ approaches to designing and adapting a literacy course to address the needs of multilingual students’ caregivers. The findings underscore the importance of a holistic approach to professional development and highlight the multicultural perspectives that academics can discover by involving both community stakeholders and teachers in promoting impactful practices for multilingual learners.

Site Amplification In The Salt Lake Valley, Utah, During The 2020 Magna Earthquake, Blair A. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Site amplification in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, has been a focus for both geologists and engineers due to its complex geology and seismic vulnerability. This study utilizes data from the 2020 Magna Earthquake to analyze site amplification from previously unavailable strong ground motion data. Ground motion data from the University of Utah Regional Seismic Network and the National Strong Motion Project, combined with extensive soil profiles, was analyzed using the program DEEPSOIL. The study compares computed motions with measured motions, revealing differences in site amplification across the Salt Lake Valley. Notably, the highest amplification was observed at longer periods …

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back: Illinois’ New Rule On Punitive Damages In Wrongful Death Cases, Alberto Bernabe
Two Steps Forward, One Step Back: Illinois’ New Rule On Punitive Damages In Wrongful Death Cases, Alberto Bernabe
Southern Illinois University Law Journal
On August 2023, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a bill into law that, for the first time, allows the imposition of punitive damages in torts cases that originate in someone’s death. Unfortunately, the law is flawed because it still unjustifiably bans the imposition of punitive damages in medical and legal malpractice cases. In doing so, by looking to minimize the extent of possible liability in malpractice cases, the legislature focused too much on protecting tortfeasors who act egregiously and too little on creating incentives to reduce the incidence of conduct that constitutes malpractice. As it is, the state of the …

Background: A specific deletion on the short arm of chromosome 5 (5p) is the hallmark of the rare genetic syndrome called Cri du Chat Syndrome (CdCS). It causes severe difficulty with swallowing, speech, motor skills, and cognitive deficiencies. These arise from characteristic laryngeal abnormalities and oral–motor dysfunctions. Objective: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of speech and language intervention in addressing the multifaceted challenges of CdCS, including speech and language impairments, feeding difficulties, and social communication deficits. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to synthesize existing studies from the last 35 years on therapeutic interventions for individuals with CdCS. …

METHODS AND MATERIALS: Data from a prospective cohort study of men with localized prostate cancer treated with active surveillance, radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy were used to examine the effect of survey language (Spanish speaking vs. English speaking) and ethnicity (Hispanic vs. non-Hispanic) on functional outcomes and treatment-related regret over 10 years. Outcomes were measured using validated questionaries adjusting for baseline patient and disease characteristics. RESULTS: A total of 770 men were included, 12% were …

Cerebellar nuclei (CN) neurons serve as the primary output of the cerebellum and originate from the cerebellar primordium at early stages of cerebellar development. These neurons are diverse, integrating information from the cerebellar cortex and relaying it to various brain regions. Employing various methodologies, we have characterized a specific subset of CN neurons that do not originate from the rhombic lip or ventricular zone of the cerebellar primordium. Embryos were collected at early stages of development and processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC), western blotting, in situ hybridization (ISH), embryonic culture, DiI labeling, and flow cytometry analysis (FCM). Our findings indicate that …

Discharge-To-Water Level Conversion Using Monthly Duration Curves (Dwl-Mdc): Enhancing The Utility Of The Geoglows Ecmwf Hydrological Model, Darlly Judith Rojas Lesmes
Theses and Dissertations
Flood early warning systems are crucial for disaster risk reduction strategies, enabling communities to take timely action against threats. However, the effectiveness of these systems depends on accurate and timely hydrological data, particularly river discharge and water level measurements. Unfortunately, many regions, face significant challenges in obtaining hydrological data, especially discharge data due to outdated rating curves, high equipment costs, and logistical constraints. Water level measurements, by contrast, offer reduced uncertainty and are often more accessible, providing an alternative for hydrological modeling in data-scarce regions. To address these limitations, we developed and validated the Discharge-to-Water Level Conversion Using Monthly Duration …

Models Of Classroom Assessment For Course-Based Research Experiences, Howard Hughes Medical Institute
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Course-based research pedagogy involves positioning students as contributors to authentic research projects as part of an engaging educational experience that promotes their learning and persistence in science. To develop a model for assessing and grading students engaged in this type of learning experience, the assessment aims and practices of a community of experienced course-based research instructors were collected and analyzed. This approach defines four aims of course-based research assessment – 1) Assessing Laboratory Work and Scientific Thinking; 2) Evaluating Mastery of Concepts, Quantitative Thinking and Skills; 3) Appraising Forms of Scientific Communication; and 4) Metacognition of Learning – along with …
