How (Not) To Decolonize Marx/Ism, Terrell Carver, Gokboru S. Tanyildiz Dec 2024

How (Not) To Decolonize Marx/Ism, Terrell Carver, Gokboru S. Tanyildiz

Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis

Since the late 1970s, postcolonial theorizing and decolonizing activisms have directed attention to a taken-for-granted Eurocentrism in Marx/ism. Since the early 2000s, the explosion in available texts, published in original languages and in English translation, has enabled these critiques to develop. Scholars of Marx and activists within Marxism have sometimes responded defensively with apologetics. In this article we analyze an exemplar of this dogmatic and moralizing genre, showing how it deploys three tropes that commonly structure intellectual biography and scholarly commentary. These three story-telling devices are: projection, passivity, and hermeticism. Shifting gear, and proceeding from an agent-oriented reading strategy, we …

Online Learning Transition: An Analysis Of Proactive Institutional Assistance In Reducing Difficulties During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mohammed Yahya Alghamdi

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

The COVID-19 pandemic caused major changes in the education system, with a shift to online learning, and experience has shown that transitioning from face-to-face instruction is difficult. This study involved 80 academic staff members from Al-Baha University in Saudi Arabia to learn about the benefits, limitations, and institutional support of online education in the setting of an epidemic. The study answers two primary questions: The first study question was, What difficulties did instructors face when they switched to online instruction? While the second research question was, How did institutional support influence the transition to online instruction? The study’s research methodology …

Spiral Historiography. A Balanced Alternative To Teaching Jazz History, Josiah Boornazian Dec 2024

Spiral Historiography. A Balanced Alternative To Teaching Jazz History, Josiah Boornazian

The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research

Jazz history is often presented in collegiate textbooks and classrooms as a linear, teleological, and chronological progression from one style to another. Some scholars have recently reacted against this pattern and have instead focused heavily on viewing jazz history through the lens of one or a few narrow perspectives such as race, economics, politics, gender, or similar topics. This paper argues that both of these approaches, taken separately, are flawed, and that therefore a more effective methodology might be to integrate the two by utilizing the abstract concept of a spiral. A spiral is a shape that, in three spatial …

Analisis Sa Lexical Choice Ng Chatgpt-Generated Na Pagsasalin, Ariel U. Bosque

An Analysis Of Charity Care Policy In Virginia And Recommendations For The Future, Victoria Richardson Dec 2024

An Analysis Of Charity Care Policy In Virginia And Recommendations For The Future, Victoria Richardson

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Virginia’s uninsured rate has dropped significantly since Medicaid expansion, but statewide gaps in coverage remain, especially among communities of color and for those transitioning from Medicaid to Medicare at age sixty-five. Accordingly, greater utilization of charity care is necessary to prevent the most vulnerable Virginians from experiencing crippling medical debt—debt they may by unable to pay due to limited resources.

Unfortunately, charity care requirements for providers suffer from a lack of clarity and accountability at both the state and federal level. This article surveys the current laws and regulations that govern charity care in Virginia and highlights problems that prevent …

Potential Of Right Ventricular Function Assessment With Echocardiography In Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, Yoshihisa Morita, Taro Kariya, Michael Dougherty, Andrew Peters, Nicholas Ruggiero

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) function assessment by echocardiography can be challenging due to its complex morphology. Also, increasing use of sedation rather than general anesthesia for transfemoral approach transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) reduces the need for intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Recent clinical studies have demonstrated the importance of 3-dimensional (3D) echocardiography and a longitudinal strain for RV function assessment. In this study, we compared RV function echocardiographic assessment methodologies in TAVR and investigated its clinical utility.

METHODS: This was a prospective, observational study of TAVR at a large academic hospital. Inclusion criteria were adult patients undergoing TAVR requiring intraoperative …

New Dominion, Old Tricks: A Review Of Virginia's 2024 General Assembly Session, Ryan Pokorny, Tucker Weiser Dec 2024

New Dominion, Old Tricks: A Review Of Virginia's 2024 General Assembly Session, Ryan Pokorny, Tucker Weiser

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The 2024 General Assembly session followed a transformative election cycle. Democrats regained full control of the General Assembly after two years of split legislative power, thwarting Governor Glenn Youngkin’s efforts to secure a Republican trifecta. Redistricting drove unprecedented turnover, with more than one-third of lawmakers joining their respective chambers as newcomers in 2024. The remade General Assembly was the youngest in recent memory and the most diverse in Virginia history. These changes brought uncertainty and promises of cooperation, but the session soon descended into familiar partisan polarization. Governor Youngkin vetoed a record number of bills, while Democrats voted down many …

The General Assembly Must Act To Protect Victims Of Sexual Abuse Following The Supreme Court Of Virginia's Recent And Significant Circumscription Of Vicarious Liability, Mark D. Dix, Robert C.T. Reed Dec 2024

The General Assembly Must Act To Protect Victims Of Sexual Abuse Following The Supreme Court Of Virginia's Recent And Significant Circumscription Of Vicarious Liability, Mark D. Dix, Robert C.T. Reed

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Few doctrines are as ingrained in the American civil justice system as that of vicarious liability: holding a principal liable for an agent’s tortious conduct. Public policy, further bolstered now by modern economic theory, provides the foundation for this doctrine. With respect to a principal’s liability for an agent’s intentional tort, the modern view has been to hold a principal just as liable for such an act as a negligent one. Virginia had largely been in step with this trend. However, beginning in 2018, the Supreme Court of Virginia reversed the Commonwealth’s course, particularly with respect to cases of sexual …

Surgical Delay-Associated Mortality Risk Varies By Subtype In Loco-Regional Breast Cancer Patients In Seer-Medicare, Macall Leslie Salewon, Rashmi Pathak, William Dooley, Ronald Squires, Hallgeir Rui, Inna Chervoneva, Takemi Tanaka

Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Substantial evidence supports that delay of surgery after breast cancer diagnosis is associated with increased mortality risk, leading to the introduction of a new Commission on Cancer quality measure for receipt of surgery within 60 days of diagnosis for non-neoadjuvant patients. Breast cancer subtype is a critical prognostic factor and determines treatment options; however, it remains unknown whether surgical delay-associated breast cancer-specific mortality (BCSM) risk differs by subtype. This retrospective cohort study aimed to assess whether the impact of delayed surgery on survival varies by subtype (hormone [HR] + /HER2 -, HR -/HER2 -, and HER2 +) in patients with …

Book Review: Pluricentric Languages And Language Education: Pedagogical Implications And Innovative Approaches To Language Teaching, Rachel Stauffer

Russian Language Journal

Pluricentric Languages and Language Education is an edited volume concerning language teaching in “major pluricentric languages that have a colonial and post-colonial history and are taught as second/foreign languages in second and higher education in Europe (and beyond)” (p. 2). The term pluricentric describes a language in variation outside of codified forms determined by a centralized language authority. Pluricentric Languages and Language Education invites Russian instructors to consider if the language in our textbooks and spoken in our classrooms is unflinchingly representative of Contemporary Standard Russian. If the answer is no, which forms of Russian do we teach and in …

Foreign And Heritage Language Learners’ Pragmalinguistic Choices In Russian Imperatives, Marina Tsylina, Anna Mikhaylova Dec 2024

Foreign And Heritage Language Learners’ Pragmalinguistic Choices In Russian Imperatives, Marina Tsylina, Anna Mikhaylova

Russian Language Journal

This experimental study examines the pragmalinguistic knowledge of both heritage and foreign language learners of Russian. Specifically, it focuses on how learners interpret the appropriateness of aspectual forms of Russian imperatives in given contexts. Due to limited exposure to authentic input, foreign language learners (FLLs) often face challenges in using pragmatically appropriate language. This study demonstrates that although heritage language learners (HLLs) are exposed to the language from birth, their knowledge of Russian imperatives may not fully align with that of monolinguals. The study participants included FLLs (n = 30), HLLs (n = 10), and monolingual speakers of Russian (n …

Mastering Russian Case: Learning Challenges, Current Textbook Approaches, And New Perspectives, Olesya Kisselev, Angelina Rubina

Russian Language Journal

Russian case morphology is recognized as a persistent challenge to second (L2) and heritage language (HL) speakers of Russian by researchers and practitioners alike. However, little classroom-based and pedagogy-oriented literature exists on the matter. In this paper, we address this research gap. First, we present a review of the literature that attempts to explain the challenging nature of mastering Russian grammatical cases from the cognitive linguistic, structural, and psycholinguistic perspectives. We then describe the general approaches to teaching and learning Russian cases found in the most commonly used Russian language textbooks in the United States. Finally, we discuss a pedagogical …
